We know that Unite Representatives are ourgreatest asset, working for the best interest ofour members in the workplace and wider society.As a Unite Rep, Official or activist, you carry outan important and enjoyable role, but one thatcomes with responsibilities.

In order to be an effective Unite activist it is vitalthat we support you with education coursesdesigned to equip you with the knowledge andskills to organise, represent and campaign onbehalf of our members.

This brochure provides you with information onthe courses available in the South West during2016. The majority of the courses take place atyour local Unite district office so they areconvenient for you to attend.

We are pleased to introduce Redundancy andTUPE courses for Workplace Reps, together witha Building Active Retired Members’ Branches forour retired members’ plus activists.

Please ensure that youapply for paid release fromyour employer to attend acourse and if you have anyproblems securing releasecontact your RegionalOfficer.

Remember that we canprovide courses in additionto those in the programmewhich can be run atworkplaces, or Unite District Offices, so pleasecontact me if there are groups of Reps who havespecific education needs.

UNION LEARNING REPS COURSES

UNION LEARNING REPS Stage 1 5 days This course is designed to be the core initial training for all Unite Union Learning Reps (ULRs). It helps themdevelop the basic knowledge and skills needed as a new Rep, enabling them to work with colleagues in theworkplace to analyse training needs. The course forms a solid foundation for the new ULR to develop theirskills and their own personal development.

UNION LEARNING REPS Stage 2 5 daysThis course continues the core essential training for all Unite Union Learning Reps (ULRs). It helps them tofurther develop the knowledge and skills needed as a ULR in the workplace – working with management,learning providers and other organisations. The course completes the foundation for the ULR and prepares theULR to develop more specialised skills and knowledge.

ADDITIONAL COURSES

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS 3 daysThis course looks at debating and negotiating skills and how to influence through argument. The soft skillselement will be delivered in the form of practical interviewing skills session which will provide an opportunity topractice these important skills.

The course also includes an introduction to using social media and the issues this may cause representativesand members in the workplace in terms of disciplinary and other legal issues. These new skills will then leadto helping reps develop social media profiles for their workplace campaigns, in order to augment and amplifythose campaigns. The emphasis is on building alliances through social media and widening their reach. Thefinal element of the course focuses on written communication in the form of creating newsletters, pressreleases and other resources for your workplace and your campaigns.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS 3 days This course will help Reps develop a better understanding on mental health issues and how they affectmembers in the workplace. You will develop a better understanding of Disability Discrimination Law and how itapplies to people with mental health illnesses. The training will enable you to develop a strategy to deal withworkplace mental health issues and ensure employees are not discriminated against.

PUBLIC SPEAKING 2 day s The Public Speaking course is run over two days, which are not concurrent to allow for union activists toprepare and deliver a speech on the second day of the course. The course will cover how to structure and deliver a speech. The aim is to increase activists' ability andconfidence in this area in a supportive environment.

BRANCH EQUALITY OFFICERS AND WORKPLACE REPSSEMINAR 1 day This one day seminar will bring Branch Equality Officers and Equality Reps together to discuss their roles andresponsibilities, together with debating how Unite can organise and campaign on equality issues in the SouthWest.It will also provide an opportunity to meet other equality activists in the union with a view to working jointly onthe South West’s equality strategy.

DEALING WITH REDUNDANCY 2 daysThe 2-day Redundancy course will help Workplace Reps to:• understand what constitutes a redundancy;• find out more about members’ legal rights in the event of proposed redundancy;• consider the extent to which the law protects members from unfair treatment in relation to proposed

redundancies;• review the rights that trade unions have to be consulted in the event of proposed redundancies

BAEM SEMINAR 1 day Black History Month takes place in October every year and celebrates the achievement of BAEM people, bothat work, and in wider society. In the South West Unite is holding a one-day seminar to bring together BAEM activists to discuss issuesspecific to our BAEM communities. All BAEM members are welcome to apply to attend the seminar.

It is being held in Torquay and will run from 2pm on Friday until 12 noon on the Sunday.Early application is recommended and if the course is over-subscribed, priority will be given to members whohaven’t attended a Unite women’s course previously.

BUILDING ACTIVE RETIRED MEMBERS BRANCHES 1 day A course for Branch Officers in Retired Members branches, this course will give you the tools to build and runcampaigns on issues that affect our members in retirement, as well as give you the skills to run an effectiveretired members branch.

PENSIONS Stage 1 5 daysThis course is designed to provide an understanding of pensions to enable Workplace representatives todevelop their representational skills in basic pension provision.

PENSIONS Stage 2 5 daysStage 2 of the pensions course looks at trustee decision making, the role of the actuary, fund investmentstrategies, negotiating pension issues and pension disputes resolution.

NATIONAL COURSES

Unite’s commitment to delivering courses recognises the different circumstances in which our reps findthemselves. This is why there are various modes of delivery for the same course. Residential Courses are forthose who simply cannot dovetail into our regional provision whether that is for geographical or domestic orother reasons. Our normal practice for national residential courses, exclusively held in The View Hotel,Eastbourne or Esher Place, kick off at 15.00 hrs on Monday and finish with a session on Action Plans at Noonon the Friday. You will appreciate that being residential students are expected to participate in a couple ofevening sessions which are less formal.

The fifth annual international summer school will again provide an invaluable opportunity for Uniteyoung activists to have five intensive days alongside trade unionists from many different countries,learning, sharing and discussing the big pictures of global capitalism, the politics of internationalorganising and global union federations and the prospects for our international political agenda.

GFTU COURSES

Unite is affiliated to the General Federation of Trade Unions. The GFTU provides many training andsupport opportunities for members. It organises special events for young trade unionists, day schools,weekend courses and other educational opportunities. One of the main locations for their training isQuorn Grange Hotel. All surpluses made here go directly back into funding trade union education.

Their full training programme can be viewed on their website http://www.gftu.org.uk. To apply,download the application forms from the website and forward the completed form to the GFTU whowill seek authorisation from Unite’s Director of Education.

Before applying for a course would you please ensure that your Regional Officer has been notified of your election/union position asthis helps to alleviate problems, at a later dated which may delay your application. Once we have received your application form we willconfirm in writing whether or not you have been allocated a course place. It is up to you to secure your paid release. Employmentlegislation entitles you to payment of wages etc. for training you undertake that is connected with your trade union ‘duties’ (negotiating,representing people etc.) However, if you have been told by your employer that you will not receive paid release, you must raise theissue with your regional officer before you attend the course. Unite Education is not responsible for obtaining your paid release.
