P r e s i d e n t ’ s L e t t e rWho Are We – What Are We

I’m getting close to the end of my term as President and I thought I might reflect for a moment on what and who we are. We are 340 members strong, but why? Why have we lasted for well over 40 years? What makes it work? What attracts new members to our club?

As with all clubs, it starts with shared interests. We tend to just take these for granted but our particular club has made the most of shared interests for quite a long time. They are the glue that holds any successful club together and BMWMCC should never lose sight of what ours are and the value of protecting those interests.

To begin with, we choose to be brand specific. It allows us to be familiar with each other’s bikes and to swap information about them. We have an implied preference for well-designed machines that almost begs us to become better riders. We take the riding part seriously. We create a culture where wearing all the safety gear is the norm and not the exception. We prefer riding with friends over solo riding. We practice avoiding straight interstate rides and instead, seek out skill-demanding twisty mountain roads. For us, riding is not just an excuse to drop in on bar after bar. Instead, we prefer miles in the hundreds on challenging lonely roads with all the beautiful scenery and history they provide. All of these preferences comprise our shared interests and it all becomes fodder for conversations.

But what if we didn’t have the opportunity to sit and have those conversations? Here’s where this club shines. We have a long-standing practice of meeting for breakfast every Saturday morning, 52 weeks a year, always at the same place and time. These informal breakfasts are not only open to members, but also to prospective members wanting a taste of our club. We have monthly dinner meetings, which are slightly more formal, where we make club announcements and then feature guest speakers. We have club social events, which are completely informal dinner gatherings. These are all opportunities to get to know each other better, to laugh, to talk about our experiences and to tell lies about what great riders we are. We publish very high quality monthly newsletters and annual Ride Books which list our planned club rides and keep members informed.

Finally, we take pride in our events. We put on the longest running BMW rally in the country. Our guests tell us it is the “must do” rally of the west. It draws hundreds of riders from nearly every state and province on North America. We promote our state further by putting on rides unique to our area such as the mountain-road-based Iron Butt Classic 1000, the 100,000 Foot Ride, and the Pass Bagger, which we hope to take national in the near future.

I really just wanted to remind everyone about what holds our Club together. We have set a really high bar and it takes a fair amount of effort to keep it all working. Truthfully, we have way more services and much higher quality services than would normally come from a club of our size. Our volunteers get the credit for that. The job for the rest of us is to be sure to support them while we enjoy the benefits of their work. It’s the least we can do. Better yet, have you asked yourself lately, “Isn’t it my time to step up and do my share?” Believe me when I say that your efforts will be appreciated!

Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to do my part. I have enjoyed it. As for now, I’m going to do a little more riding and a little less planning.

Ride safe my friends,Jeff

Yamaha Designs a Robot That Can Ride Motorcycles

Motobot is an autonomous robot built to ride motorcycles similar to how a human rider would, right down to turning the throttle. The initial model that debuted at this Tokyo Motor Show still has some catching up to do before it reaches human capabilities, though. For now, it moves along at slow speeds and needs “training wheel” wings to protect it from toppling over. Check out the video online.
