NEWSLETTER Winter 2016 Edition
CSB 2016 is fast approaching! The team at McMaster University
has assembled a wonderful conference, filled with exciting
keynotes, unique social and networking activities, and a downtown
Hamilton venue. I hope that you all will join me in Hamilton this
July for the conference.
Along with the usual podium and poster sessions, the program will be highlighted by
award sessions and several symposiums organized around key focal areas in
Canadian Biomechanics. CSB honors excellent work in partnership with Northern
Digital, Inc. (NDI) every two years in three categories: The David Winter Promising
Young Scientist, the doctoral research award, and the masters research award. I
encourage everyone eligible to submit their work for these awards, more information
on procedures can be found on the conference website.
Along with each CSB meeting comes a changing of the executive board. We will
soon have online elections for the many elected positions on the board. I encourage
you to renew your membership (gaining a discount on the conference), and add your
votes to the totals. This will be our second online executive election, and promises to
run as smoothly as the first!
Please read on in the newsletter for more details of the 2016 meeting. I look forward
to renewing old friendships and starting new debates in Hamilton, and seeing the
spectrum of biomechanics endeavors from across Canada on display!

MEMBERSHIP REPORT
CSB Newsletter | February 2016 Page 5 www.csb-scb.com
The start of the calendar year is an important time for the finances of the Canadian
Society for Biomechanics. Most of the CSB’s revenue is derived from the membership
fees that you, the members, contribute on an annual basis. These fees enable us to
support member activities and to promote the society. Over the past year (2015), we
have been able to support several conferences, for example the 16th Annual Alberta
BME Conference 2015. At this conference, the Canadian Society for Biomechanics
provided funding for a podium prize (awarded to Colin Firminger, University of
Calgary) and a poster prize (awarded to Jessica Kupper, University of Calgary). As
well, the CSB supported the 2015 Ontario Biomechanics Conference that was hosted
by the Department of Kinesiology & Physical Education at Wilfrid Laurier University
from March 13-15th, 2015.
We not only support conferences with your membership fees, we also contribute
directly to members to assist with their research and academic training. Also in 2015,
we awarded one student travel grant to Kenneth Brent Smale, a PhD student from the
University of Ottawa with 3000$ to pay for a three month research stay at the
University of Copenhagen. During this time, Kenneth performed data collection and
also presented some preliminary work at the 20th Congress of the European College of
Sport Science and the 25th Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics.
Overall, this was a positive educational opportunity for Kenneth and something that
will benefit him for years to come. I speak on his behalf, and echo his comments, in
thanking the members of the CSB for their support.
As you can see, the CSB aims to provide members with resources to assist in the
development of biomechanics and the Canadian biomechanics community. I am
pleased to serve a community that supports its members and I look forward to continue
working on behalf of the membership. For a detailed view of the CSB’s finances,
please view the attached 2015 financial statements of the CSB, including our
membership numbers and the financial report.
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Grant Handrigan

Hello CSB Student Members!
With the CSB 2016 conference fast approaching, we wanted to give you all of the
information needed to help get you as excited as we are for July 19-22!
If you haven’t already, check us out on the official CSB-Student Members LinkedIn
page! The page provides CSB student members with the means to stay connected
and build our professional networks as we move forward in our degrees. It will also
allow us to foster collaborative opportunities between institutions; and will serve as a
forum for communication between the CSB student members. Please note that all
official communication from the Society will still arrive via email, and that only
current student members will be accepted into the group.
There is also a CSB Twitter feed that is actively trying to promote Biomechanics
research to the masses. We regularly tweet and re-tweet research updates from labs
across the country. You can also expect to see tweets with important information and
dates for the CSB 2016 Conference.
Follow @CSBiomech for all of your important CSB news and updates!
We would like to remind all student members that the CSB provides travel awards to
student members annually. There are two awards intended to support graduate
student travel to other laboratories to expand their research experience (valued at up
to $3,000). There are also up to 20 Conference Travel Awards (values at $300) which
are intended to help offload some of the cost of attending the CSB 2016 conference.
Please see the guidelines on the CSB website for more
information (http://health.uottawa.ca/biomech/csb/

RESEARCH NEWS
The ‘Thesis Corner’ and the ‘Research News’ sections are two areas of the newsletter that we hope students
and supervisors will take advantage of. Please submit the titles of recently completed master’s and doctoral
thesis. We will upload these to our website, or provide a link to either the university or library.
The thesis corner will contain the title, name, year and institution along with a web link to the abstract on the
CSB/SCB website (if desired).
We encourage everyone to submit their own or their students’ recently completed thesis abstracts and any
Research News associated with any Canadian Biomechanics Lab to the communications officer. We will
update the website with research and study pictures, as well as tweet the material. Lets get your research more
