The Inspiration Tree

Our Founders

Late Sh. Seth Pokhar Mal was a great visionary who always thought ahead of time to help the society through

education. He firmly believed that knowledge is the product of an educational institution. He was a strategist

and an institution builder. We would always continue to take inspiration from his work in the field of education.

Late Smt. Rukmini Devi, wife of Seth Pokhar Mal Ji, was a great philanthropist. She had immense regard for

ethical values in life and was deeply imbibed with love for children. She always visualized a beautiful world of

children full of innocence, happiness and virtues. “Seth Pokhar Mal Educational Society” took upon itself the

task of converting her dream into reality. In 1986, the society started Rukmini Devi Public School,

perpetuating her name, immediately after the registration of the society. In course of time, SPMES established

Rukmini Devi Institute of Advanced Studies (RDIAS) as well, among several other institutions.

Sh. K.C Garg formed the society, after his father's name. He has a personality with a multidimensional vision

and action for the cause of education. He is the guiding force behind the success of educational ventures of

Seth Pokhar Mal Education Society, since its inception in 1986. His perseverance has inspired the 'Rukmini

Devi' family to grow from a small kinder garten level to a conglomerate of institutes, offering infrastructure of

international standard and education at an affordable cost.

Smt. Anita Garg's leadership and commitment towards educating the society has brought Rukmini Devi group

at an international platform. She derives her philosophy from her in-depth knowledge of literature. She has,

with her hard work and intellect, nurtured and manicured little saplings into trees of wisdom.

About Seth Pokhar Mal Educational SocietyAbout Seth Pokhar Mal Educational Society

Seth Pokhar Mal Educational Society, established in 1986, operates several institutes of repute under the brand “Rukmini Devi”.

Through its concerted efforts the society has created institutions of international standard that impart quality education right from the

kinder-garten stage to post graduation level programs, at very affordable prices.

Keeping in view the growing need of educational opportunities for children with the exposure to contemporary circumstances to

transform them into responsible citizens as a national resource, Mr. K. C. Garg and his wife Mrs. Anita Garg established (founded) the

society namely Seth Pokhar Mal Educational Society (SPMES) to serve the community/society as a whole. In 1986, under the aegis of

SPMES, they started Rukmini Devi Public School in Pitampura and perpetuated the name of his father Seth Pokhar Mal and his mother

Smt. Rukmini Devi.

Dear Readers,

It gives me great opportunity to present this edition of Citadel. I think this newsletter is an excellent platform to exhibit the literary skills, innovative ideas and many other facets of students and faculty life.

In this issue, we will recount the various activities by the students and faculty in academic, cocurricular, extra-curricular as well as research & development since July 2017. The campus is filled with smart and inspired students who are ready to take the advantage of RDIAS's breadth of offerings. Our students have displayed exemplary performance not just in academics but also cultural events, sports activities and ofcourse they have been actively involved in social responsibility projects carried on by the institute. At the same time, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) committee's second visit for accreditation was scheduled in September 2017; this gave us a chance to see the reflection of our progress and achievements.

The objective of our institute is to impart quality education and to put forward well informed; articulate and groomed students who are our pride and wealth. We would like to thank all the students who contributed in writing the articles.

Each semester, our team of editors, graphic designer, photographers and correspondents work extensively to report on events in and around college and also provide creative content. We would like to thank them for their everlasting support throughout the creation of this edition. We would like readers to take out some time and share your feedback with us at . A) Guest Lectures

Guest speakers from industry have become an important part of the educational experience of students. At RDIAS, it is a practice to expose students to recent updates & innovations through guest lectures from eminent academicians & high ranking corporate professionals. Having a subject matter expert is an excellent way to provide current, realistic expertise on a critical topic, which further accentuates the student's level of understanding of a subject. Today's education scenario is rapidly changing and demanding. The system demands higher levels of communication between educators, knowledge assimilators and administrators to have optimum use of resources.

Our college recognizes these needs and is proud to have maintained the student portal system fulfilling these demands and enacting as a bridge of communication amongst students, faculties and management for more than a year now.

1. Advantages of portal system for Students: 1.1 Academic Advantages:

- The portal offers a concrete and full proof system of online tests wherein the student's knowledge of the subject first taught is measured. Students have to take these tests twice a semester on completion of half and complete syllabus respectively.

- To explore causation in order to justify underlying principles, students are given case studies to read through the portal, which are then discussed in the class.

Corporate Training ProgramCorporate Training Program

Corporate Training Program: Making Students Industry Ready

Background : India's growth story has a long way to go and if we wish to realize the dream of making India an economic super power, training and development of young India is the need of the hour. We have enormous advantage of age and have abundant man power available, however, when it comes to quality of man power; we hear of shortage stories all around due to non availability of industry ready students. Initiating a corporate training program in this direction as the long term solution is significant.

Introduction : The Corporate Training Program (CTP) is a collection of customized modules, designed and planned specifically for the students of BBA, MBA and MCA. At RDIAS we believe that the most important function of education at any level is to develop the personality of the individual and to instill within the student the significance of his life to himself and to others. At the end of this rigorous and detailed module, rise in self esteem and self worth is witnessed and the student with pride says: “Because I am worth it!”

Aim and Objective : The training module is aimed at the promotion of the strategies for the personality development of the students at graduate and post graduate level. The rationale behind this endeavor is the recognition of the multifaceted influence of the personality of the students for future effectiveness. Also, to remove or screen out barriers or obstructions which stand in the way of the expression of individual personality, through a process of training.

Outcome : The outcome of the CTP program is effective grooming of students, offering a perfect blend of knowledge, temperament, emotions, principles and behavior.

The following table carries the details of the CTP Program in the Department of MBA and MCA and is inclusive of modules by the name of Managerial Skills Development (MSD) and General Proficiency (GP).

A few activities have been described as under:

1. Self-Introduction: Being able to succinctly describe your interests, goals, and skills is crucial in any networking situation. How can someone provide you with relevant advice or a useful contact if you don't clearly articulate what you are looking for? To create a dynamic self-introduction

• Consider what your goals are. What do you want to learn more about through networking? This might be a specific job, industry (e.g., career options in finance), or how to apply a skill set (e.g., foreign language skills).

• Determine and describe the most relevant pieces of information about yourself. Examples include a recent internship or job in the field; why a course or newspaper article sparked your interest; transferrable skills developed through a student club.

• Combine these into a 2-3 sentence introduction about yourself.• This is often called an “elevator speech”, because you should imagine that you are stuck in an elevator with someone and you need

to tell them about you before they get off. Think about how you can use this short period of time to not only introduce yourself but also convey something about who you are and what you do.

2. Presentations: Presenting information clearly and effectively is a key skill to get your message or opinion across and, today, presentation skills are required in almost every field. This can be a very daunting prospect; a few quick tips on effective presentation can help you through:

• Talk naturally to your audience – although it may be appropriate to read short passages avoid reading from a script for the majority of your presentation.

• Stand, rather than sit, and move around a little – but avoid pacing backwards and forwards like a trapped animal.• Vary the tone, pitch and volume of your voice to add emphasis and maintain the audience's interest. Aim to speak loudly and clearly

while facing your audience. Avoid talking in a monotone voice or turning your back to the audience. See Effective Speaking for more information.

• Make eye contact with your audience. Do not stare at your feet, or the podium and avoid looking directly at any one person for more than a few seconds, gain eye contact with the individual members of the audience.

• Use visual aids where appropriate, graphs and charts, diagrams, pictures and video - but don't overdo it. Visual aids should help to illustrate and strengthen your points not be a distraction from what you are saying.

• Rehearse your talk and check your timings. Always aim to finish you talk in time remembering to allow time for questions if appropriate.

• Prepare and structure your presentation carefully. Introduce the subject – tell the audience what your talk is about. Explain the points you wish to convey. End with a summary of your points.

• Stay focused throughout your presentation – avoid irrelevance and unnecessary detail.• Learn to channel any nervous energy, relax but stay alert.• Answer any questions as honestly and concisely as you can. If you don't know the answer then say so and offer to provide further

information at a later date.

3. Group Discussion : In this activity, a group of participants are made to discuss on a topic or subject for a limited time and then assessed accordingly. It is a chance for you to be more vocal. There are a lot of advantages of a group discussion:

• It helps to shed away the shyness of a candidate and brings his viewpoint amidst all. • It stimulates to think in a different, new way.• It helps the candidate in understanding his/ her own strengths and weaknesses.• It acts as an aid in expansion of the knowledge of the participant. • It helps to analyse the social or economic issues more logically.

Not just these, there are various other advantages to add on to. But, let us first have a glimpse of how to perform well in a group discussion.

Here is a list of what should be done and what should be avoided at a Group Discussion (GD)

• Be as natural as possible. Do not try to be someone you are not. Be yourself. In an attempt to be someone else, your opinions will not be portrayed.

• Sit with a straight and confident posture.• Be assertive yet humble. You need to stick to your values and beliefs, but learn to respect the values and opinions of others too.• Grab the opportunity to speak first, i.e. to start the group discussion with your opinion. It generally leaves a good impression on the

evaluator, but take the move only if you have complete knowledge of the subject.• Do not repeat a point, or be lengthy or irrelevant. Also intervene, if someone else is going on an irrelevant track. • Facilitate contribution from others. Do not just go on and on and on with only your opinionated view. Remember, it is a group

discussion. Allow others to speak too.• Make an eye contact with all the participants. It creates more room for conversation. Also keep nodding, when others speak, it

shows receptivity.• Be an active and dynamic participant. The examiner wants to hear you speak. So do put forth your views. • Be positive and prepare your thoughts well but do not be over-confident. • Think well before you speak. You are being heard and judged upon. • When raising an objection to a point kept by another speaker, back it up with a solid reason to get the point across. • Use quotes, facts and figures, statements, everyday life examples to express a clear chain of thoughts. Also it might leave a good

impression on the examiner and help you score well.

4. Mock Interviews: Mock Interviews provides practice employment interviews in a simulated environment and gives a perspective to the students on the best way to present during an actual interview. The mock interview is designed to increase your understanding and confidence in preparing for the real interview. The interview environment is simulated by a facilitator asking you a set of questions, followed by a period of feedback and it includes Training session having discussion about the commonly made errors, suitable answers, dress code, resume and other preparations for the interview. In this activity Panel Interviews are conducted by faculty members from Finance, HR and Marketing domain, they also judge knowledge and behavioral skills of students.

Preparing for your Mock Interview

• Think about answering questions using this process: Identify your skills, talents, knowledge • Describe an experience to illustrate or reinforce the above • Connect each experience to the position/organization • Another way to answer questions is to use the SAR approach i.e. to provide sufficient information, describe the Situation, Action,

and Result• Research on the company/position can provide insight to possible questions.

Page 45: IN THIS EDITION - Top MBA College in GGSIP University ...rdias.ac.in/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Citadel-July-Dec-2017-Vol-1… · RDIAS offers MBA and BBA courses affiliated to Guru

33

• Dress professionally. This is a good opportunity for the interviewee to practice interviewing in formal attire. • Bring both a job description and a current resume (optional; but helpful for the interviewer). These items can be supplied when the

appointment is initially made to help the interviewer better simulate the specific interview experience.

5 . Dynamics of working in teams: Functioning as a successful team requires the integration of many different activities. Team building exercises are very important in the development of task-oriented teams that will work together. This activity helps the students to know how to work as a team and also provides an overview of why group work is important. The following are some recommendations for effectively solving a problem as a group.

• Each member should understand the total problem or task. Someone, usually the chairperson or task leader, should summarize the task that is to be done. He or she should seek clarification from the members to assure that everyone understands what the group will be doing.

• Each person should realize how he or she can contribute to the solution.• Each person should recognize the potential contributions of others• Members should be willing to recognize when other members may need more information or assistance, and to offer their help so

that each member can make his or her full contribution to the effort.• Negotiation is important to success. The very differences that bring many talents into a group also bring in different opinions and

perceptions. The best solution is one that everyone finds acceptable. The group should make decisions based on what is in the organization's best interest.

• Sometimes members lose sight of what the original purpose was and may get sidetracked. These “detours” can waste a lot of the group's time. It is important to keep the purpose, goal, or task in mind, and to bring the discussion back to the stated focus. This is the shared responsibility of all group members.

• Everyone has leadership qualities, and leadership may change depending on the situation or task. Leadership means influence; the person with the most influence is not always the person with the most authority. If a member sees an opportunity that is in the group's best interest, he or she is obligated to call that opportunity to the group's attention.

• Not every task is appropriate for a group. Writing, for example, is best accomplished by an individual. Drafting a budget is better accomplished by an individual. The result or product may be approved by the group, but the actual task of writing or calculating should be performed by an individual.

At the end of this rigorous and detailed module, rise in self esteem and self worth is witnessed and the student with pride says: “Because I am worth it!”

This requires an innovator facilitator training to develop an experience for our management students or amateur entrepreneurs where their existing notions about a successful business can find a new dimension and thought process gets clarity.

Mr. Ranjan, the speaker for the day, made students realized that the entire notion of innovation sometimes blocks the mind of individuals. He shared with the students his Storm the Norm technique, the basic five techniques :-• Stale norms , stale stagnant market• Spot the suboptimal• Conceive the breakthrough and Iterate to Elegance• Pace to critical mass• Fresh vibrant market

Sir had explained these concepts through real life examples and by sharing some of his rich experiences, he very swiftly moved us from “mindlessness to mindfulness”. He emphasized on how essential it is to know the gap that exists in the already existing business world. It is that gap that has to be identified and bridged through our innovative thoughts. Students eagerly asked him their doubts and with a lot of optimism and practicality he answered them all. As students who aspire to be future leaders for tomorrow, this session proved out to be an informative session.

MNCs: Saviour or SaboteursJaison J Abraham, MBA I M Semester

Globalization is not a new concept for anyone. It has allowed the various countries to opt for the international business, trade and investment. It is more of the cross border trade relations. In era of globalization, the trend of Multinational Corporations was started. These are the companies who form the base for the increased global transactions and foreign trade. MNCs carry out their operations in more than one country. They produce or provide goods or services of highest quality and according to the latest global norms. They also employ the best human resources in a country and thus build a brand images that are unique, stable and above all, saleable.

In India, MNCs arrived in the mid-sixties of the last century. Colgate, Palmolive and Coca-Cola were the most trusted names of those times. The sixties also saw the presence of the drug giants. Glaxo, Nicolas and other drug majors gradually made deep forays into the Indian market as the population demanded more medicines. But our economy remained a mixed one and our government always looked at the MNCs with suspicion. The Japanese had just started their marathon run in consumer electronics. They were disliked by most of the Indian consumers because of nil credibility. Also, Indians could not give full support to Coca-Cola due to political reasons. Considering media, Radio, TV, telephone etc. have been in vogue in Indian market. Music got a new meaning with the Japanese majors like Sony Mitsushita and Sharp introduced high fidelity stereo system. The revolution had begun!

During the dying years of the seventies, the stage was set in India and during mid-eighties, this stage was re-set by Integrated Circuits, CNG machines and Drugs for fighting heart attacks. Thus, the Indians had to rely on MNCs, which had become symptoms with technical, comfortable products and cheap rates. Then, there came a time when most of the MNCs entered the Indian market in the early 90's. The Government greeted them with a better policy and with new economic reforms. Several MNCs established their factories and offices in urban India. Sales sored up and FMCGs became the hot property on the TV shows and advertisement. The rest of the work was done by cable TV networks and internet.

Naturally a nation with a population of more than a billion was lured by these new products and services and MNCs filled up the void that was left by Indian manufacturers. But few economists and politicians formed other school of thought. MNCs in some cases are seen like saboteur like they didn't give jobs to the poor masses. They brought human resources either from abroad or from A grade India Institutions. Talented professional of India are just 2-3 percent of the total population. They work for MNCs and after short assignment they leave Indian shores forever. Further the products and services are no longer cheaper rather day by day prices are rising. Further, MNCs are also being allowed to enter those sectors which were once reserved for Indian firm. Ironically MNCs will do much better in those areas too because of their better policies and infrastructure and thus putting our own coin under shade. Banking, car production and telecommunication services are some of the fields in which they have out- performed Indian firms.

Finally every MNC comes to India to earn money. In a free market system any amount can be transferred by MNC to its parent country. This would lead to drain foreign exchange reserves. Had our own enterprises were up to the task we would not have threats of this kind. We import jeans, shirts and electronic gadgets whereas we can manufacture these products much cheaper. Our quality control norms are poor and so customers are swayed by the quality of products and services of MNC.

We can conclude by stating that we need MNCs as we are a part of global trading culture. We should also import technologies through them but we should manufacture products in India. MNCs should not be viewed as saboteurs. But they must not be allowed to control the destiny of a nation.

PULSE CANDY: A Candy of Rs. 300 CroreNikhil Airan, BBA V Semester

Innovation is doing something off beat which results in the formation of a new style. This phrase is being seriously taken by the makers of PULSE CANDY- candy with tangy twist. In this digital era, there is still the existence of one category of advertising that truly stands out – Word of Mouth! And Pulse candy has proved that no form of marketing in products can beat the word of mouth strategy as this candy has surpassed all competition and beaten all the records by crossing the 100 crore mark in just 8 months! This figure equals the record for heavily advertised Cole Zero, Coca Cola's diet drink and other big brands!

Founded in 1929, the Dharampal Satyapal group has been involved in a variety of sectors likes food beverage, hospitality, agro forestry, tobacco, and packaging and mouth fresheners. Under its umbrella, it manufactures Catch spices, Pass Pass mouth freshner, Rajnigandha Pan Masala as well as Ksheer dairy products, including milk, ghee and dahi. In its confectionary sector, it manufacturers Pass Pass Chingles and Pass Pass Pulse.

In low price high volume, there is always a need of developing a sale story for the salesman, to enable them to place the product at the outlet, and for the retailer to push the product trial to the customers. For Pulse candy, once the trials made started gaining attraction, the product strength took it forward. Word of mouth started catching up as most people started referring the candies to their friends and colleagues. At some places it became a mouth freshener of sort after lunch at others it was a regular get together candy among friends in a college class. The word had set in.

The awesome part of its success story is that Pulse has hardly spent a single penny on any marketing. The whole lift in demand is due to word of mouth publicity. Demand is much more than the supply and currently the company is able to meet only 60-70% of the demand, said Shashank Surana, vice-president, DS Group. Indian customers usually buys candy in single pieces, but in the case of pulse candy, consumers are buying in bulk—five to 10 in one go. At present, DS Group produces 300-400 tonnes of Pulse candy each month. Once Pulse reaches most top towns, DS Group would plan to start promotions and a brand-building exercise.

With the rising demand of Pulse it started selling at a premium, it had to be supported well through the distribution. More than 80% market coverage, frequent refillment, and overall tight distribution norms helped Pulse be available at every nook and corner of the city. Launch in Rajasthan and Gujarat was followed up by launch in UP & Delhi. At 2015 end, a new Guava flavor of Pulse candy was launched in the market. The company crossed 100 crore mark in January this year which was set to be achieved by the end of March. Further, the Pulse candy group has registered sales worth Rs 300 crore since its launch in mid-2015, leaving more established multi-nationals scurrying for new market strategies. The candy market in India, worth Rs 6,600 crore, is growing at an annual rate of 12-14%. Italy's Perfetti, which makes Alpenliebe, Chlor-mint, Mentos candies and Happydent chewing gum, led the market with more than Rs 2,000 crore in annual sales.

With nearly no advertising and minimal merchandising, Pulse is a story of product being the ultimate winner. The best strategy for DS group is still to develop a product that speaks for itself, maybe it Pass Pass or Catch mineral water. Parle, ITC Ltd and Wrigley are the other major players in the segment. But it's Pulse that is racing up to competition. The hard boiled candy brands that Pulse competes with include Parle's Mango Bite and Perfetti's Alpenliebe, besides some local brands. Last year, Parle launched the 'Spicy Kaccha Mango Bite' to grab a slice of the lucrative hard-boiled candies (HBC) market. The journey of Pulse has just begun and it rightly aims to be among the top 3 candies in India.

Game Changing Reform in Indian EconomyGarima Dang, MBA I (Eve), Semester, Section - A

Amidst economic crisis across the globe, India has posed a beacon of hope with ambitious growth targets, supported by a bunch of strategic undertakings such as the Make in India and Digital India campaigns. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is another such undertaking that is providing the much needed stimulant for economic growth in India by transforming the existing base of indirect taxation towards the free flow of goods and services. GST is eliminating the cascading effect of taxes. India is projected to play an important role in the world economy in the years to come.

The introduction of the Goods and Services Tax has been a very noteworthy step in the field of indirect tax reforms in India. By merging a large number of Central and State taxes into a single tax, GST has significantly eased double taxation and made taxation overall easy for the industries. For the end customer, the most beneficial is in terms of reduction in the overall tax burden on goods and services. Introduction of GST has also made Indian products competitive in the domestic and international markets. As per industry experts, SMEs and Start-ups have been affected the most with the rollout of the GST and the impact seems to be favourable in ways more than one. Some of the ways GST is benefiting SMEs and Start-ups are:

• Ease of starting business: A business having operations across different state needs VAT registration. Different tax rules in different states only add to the complications and incur a high procedural fees. GST enables a centralized registration that makes starting a business easier and the consequent expansion an added advantage for SMEs.

• Reduction of tax burden on new business: As per the current tax structure, businesses with a turnover of more than rupees 5 lakh need to pay a VAT registration fee. The government mulls the exemption limit under GST to twenty five lakh giving relief to over 60% of small dealers and traders.

• Improved logistics and faster delivery of services: Under the GST bill, no entry tax will be charged for goods manufactured or sold in any part of India. As a result, delivery of goods at interstate points and toll check posts will be expedited. According to an estimate by CRISIL, the logistics cost for manufacturers of bulk goods will get reduced significantly—by about 20%. This is expected to boost ecommerce across the nation.

• Elimination of distinction between goods and services: GST ensures that there is no ambiguity between goods and services. This will simplify various legal proceedings related to the packaged products. As a result, there will no longer be a distinction between the material and the service component, which will greatly reduce tax evasion.

There are expectations that the tax reform will boost the Indian economy and huge shift will be seen from unorganised to organised sector. From the viewpoint of the consumer, they would now have pay more tax for most of the goods and services they consume. The majority of everyday consumables now draw the same or a slightly higher rate of tax. Furthermore, the GST implementation has a cost of compliance attached to it. It seems that this cost of compliance will be prohibitive and high for the small scale manufacturers and traders, who have also protested against the same. They may end up pricing their goods at higher rates.

Talking about the long-term benefits, it is expected that GST would not just mean a lower rate of taxes, but also minimum tax slabs. Countries where the Goods and Service Tax has helped in reforming the economy, apply only 2 or 3 rates – one being the mean rate, a lower rate for essential commodities, and a higher tax rate for the luxurious commodities. Currently, in India, we have 5 slabs, with as many as 3 rates – an integrated rate, a central rate, and a state rate. In addition to these, cess is also levied. The fear of losing out on revenue has kept the government from gambling on fewer or lower rates. This is very unlikely to see a shift anytime soon; though the government has said that rates may be revisited once the RNR (revenue neutral rate) is reached.

The impact of GST on macroeconomic indicators is likely to be very positive in the medium-term. Inflation would be reduced as the cascading (tax on tax) effect of taxes would be eliminated. GST is expected to bring greater transparency, improve compliance levels and create a common playing field for businesses by amalgamating a host of central and local taxes. It would change the current tax regime of production-based taxation to a consumption-based system.

Artificial Intelligence: End of Miseries or ProspectsAastha Palit, MBA I Semester, Section - A

You are living in 21st century, in a technocrat world. Get set for a technology which has the potential to transform the entire world. Yes, you are correct; it is about the most advanced discovery of science by far- Artificial Intelligence (AI). In simple language, Artificial Intelligence is the branch of computer science concerned with making computers behave like humans. Under this technology, machines are made to have sufficient creative reasoning power to perform mental tasks. Although, Artificial Intelligence has plethora of applications ranging from heavy industries and space, finance, aviation, weather forecast, banking sector, security system etc., and concern is with its overall impact on Indian economy and job prospects of human beings in coming future.

Everyone knows AI in machines can prove to be more efficient than human for they are capable of working 24*7 without any stress. As human, they don't get bored by respective nature of jobs and they can be used in exploration and research which has been abandoned due to human limitations till now. AI helps in reducing the error and reach accuracy with a greater degree of precision. Therefore, any country, developed or developing will get inclined towards AI as it can increase the graph of their growth rate exponentially. The transition has already started. In many industries, entire manufacturing process has been made fully automated through AI. E-corner have replaced banks where each and every thing i.e. opening of account, updating passbook, dispensing cash etc. are being done through machines. Even doctors, scientists, military personnel are using AI extensively now days.

No doubt, the time for doing a particular work has reduced drastically. There are no long queues or any counters. Everything has gone online and I can easily say that our mobile phone is itself a kind of small robot which gives us access to the entire world at our finger tips. However, it is important to look at the other side.

Fourth Industrial Revolution built around AI, eliminates jobs (both blue and white collar) at a rapid pace. It is estimated that AI could drive global unemployment to 50%, wiping out middle class jobs and exacerbating inequality. Unlike the Industrial Revolution, the 'AI Revolution' will not be a matter of physically powerful machines that outperform human labourers, but rather a contest between human wit and mechanical intelligence and strength. Automation's effect on unemployment has huge political consequences. This situation is currently prevalent in India too. Despite all the efforts of the government, India's job growth has hit it's lowest since 2009. Talking about the physical characteristics of the machines, they do not have any emotions and moral values. They perform what is programmed and cannot take decisions if they encounter a situation unfamiliar to them. Unlike humans, AI cannot be improved with experience. With time, it can lead to wear and tear. Machines are unable to alter their responses to changing environments. The originality of a creative mind and inherent intensive abilities of the human brain cannot be replicated. Machines won't think before acting. Thus, they may be programmed to do wrong things or for mass destruction. Then there is always a scope of hacking the machines.

Some of the steps that India can take to maximally benefit from the AI Revolution are that it must adopt deliberate policy to drive AI innovation, adaptation and proliferation in sectors beyond consumer goods and information technology services. Policymakers should make AI a critical component of the PM's flagship, Make In India, Skill India and Digital India Programs. Government should offer incentives for manufacturers, create regional innovation clusters for manufacturing automation robotics in partnership with universities and start-ups. These all steps will automatically cater to the problem of job creation.

Thus, AI system is capable of human level intelligence and could ease the human suffering but they could also threaten human autonomy, freedom and even survival. Therefore, we must always be vigilant that research and implementation of artificial intelligence is not diverse from its ethical consequences.

The Super Powerful-Legged Man(Real life inspirational story)Shruti Saini, BBA I Semester

“Inspiration” What is it? Where can it be found? How does it affect our lives? The power of this mere eleven letter word cannot be realized unless we feel it deep down in our heart, unless we get awakened by it and unless our mind directs. It's usually said that to achieve success we have to add two ingredients in the dish of our life- inspiration and perspiration. Every person aspires to be successful but not all recognize these two valuable things and that is what makes the difference. Inspiration is more than a feeling, it is basically a life changing moment that life offers to everyone but only the fortunate and witty ones are able to see it, recognize it and grab it. In our lifetime, we come across many successful personalities and then what we do is adore them and get inspired from them but this inspiration process is fruitful only when we get aware of how to maintain it and mix it with perspiration. This is what was understood by Hugh Herr- a Rock climber, an Engineer and a Biophysicist.

Hugh Herr, who heads the Biomechatronics group at the MIT Media Lab, is creating bionic limbs that emulate the function of natural limbs. In 2011, TIME magazine coined him the “Leader of the Bionic Age” because of his revolutionary work in the emerging field of biomechatronics – technology that marries human physiology with electro mechanics. Born on October 25, 1964 in a Mennonite family from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Hugh Herr was a prodigy rock climber. At the age of eight, he scaled the face of the 11627 feet mount temple in the Canadian Rockies and by 17 he was included in the list of best climbers in the United States. This wasn't all; he earned an undergraduate degree in physics at his local college, Millersville University, and a master's degree in mechanical engineering at MIT, followed by a PhD in biophysics from Harvard University. There was no doubt that Herr was a hardworking and determined person since childhood. But life has its own plans to test us.

In January 1982, Herr and a fellow climber Jeff Batzer were ascending a difficult technical ice route in Huntington Ravine on Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Then they got caught in a blizzard and became disoriented, ultimately descending into the Great Gulf where they passed three nights in −29 °C degree temperatures. By the time they were rescued, the climbers had suffered severe frostbite. Both of Herr's legs had to be amputated below the knees; his companion lost his lower left leg, the toes on his right foot, and the fingers on his right hand. At that time Herr's dreams of a great rock climber shattered. He was now counted among the disabled people. During that time he had two options in front of him, either to give up and live his whole life in despair on other's support or to put up the broken pieces of his shattered dreams, get up and do something extraordinary. He bravely chose the second and the right path. When one learns to fight from the fears within he becomes unstoppable, so was with Herr. Following months of surgeries and rehabilitation, Herr was doing what doctors told him was unthinkable, it was climbing again. Using specialized prostheses that he designed, he created prosthetic feet with high toe stiffness that made it possible for him to stand on small rock edges with the width of a coin, and titanium-spiked feet that assisted him in ascending steep ice walls. He with his team basically focused on three major factors which were how to attach the prosthetic feet with biological body, how to make it like flesh and bones and how to connect its actions with the nervous system. He used these prostheses to alter his height to avoid awkward body positions and to grab hand and foot holds previously out of reach. His height could range from five to eight feet. As a result of using the prostheses, Herr climbed at a more advanced level than he had before the accident, making him the first person with a major amputation to perform in a sport on par with elite-level, able-bodied persons. He envisions a future where, after someone loses a limb, they can go to the hospital and get a menu of replacement options, some of which can provide superpowers. So he started experimenting and making advance level prosthetic limbs that helped a disable person to live a life better than an able person do live.

On the TED2014 stage, he said that he never saw his body as disabled or broken, from his point of view technology was broken. He also said “I quickly realized that the artificial part of my body is malleable. It was a blank slate for which to create, perhaps, structures that could

extend beyond biological capability. Every person should have the right to live life without disability if they so choose, without severe depression, the right to see a loved one in case of vision impairment or the right to walk or to dance in case of limb paralysis or limb amputation. We the people need not accept our limitations but can transcend disability through technological innovation and end disability”.

Herr has received many accolades for his groundbreaking innovations, including the 13th Annual Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment; the Prince Salman Award for Disability Research; the Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award in Technology; the 14th Innovator of the Year Award; the 41st Inventor of the Year Award; and the 2016 Princess of Asturias Award for Technical & Scientific Research. Herr's story has been told in a National Geographic film, “Ascent: The Story of Hugh Herr.” He has also been featured on CNN and other broadcasters and in many press articles, including The Economist, Discover, and Nature.

Herr's courage and actions proved that to live life to its fullest we need to look towards the bright side even in the darkest days of our lives and work to improve our conditions rather than to regret. Now it's your time to find your life changing moment if you haven't found it yet.
