Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in Chester County, Montgomery County
and Delaware County?
Celebrate with an Oneg
Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances who live in Chester County, Montgomery County and Delaware County who are not already members of a synagogue? If you do, why not invite them to one of the upcoming events at Or Shalom, for example our next Friday night dinner? They may have a good time and decide to come back. They may have such a good time that they decide to become members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county. We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who they are. You can help. Todah rabah!

The President’s Column September 2017
Make Or Shalom Great Again (Too Soon?)
To answer a majority of the questions I hear … Yes, Or Shalom has a president and his name is Andrew Levin. I have been a member of the congregation for over ten years. I have been a board member for a number of years and for the last year I have been one of the two vice presidents of the congregation. I have two children in the Hebrew school. Rebecca had her Bat Mitzvah last October and will be starting Hebrew High about the time this newsletter is distributed. Albert will be a Bar Mitzvah May 12, 2018 (mark your calendars). First, I would like to say thank you for the all the previous board members, presidents, and volunteers that have come before me. Many of these people are still very active in the congregation and we would not be where we are today without them. This is especially true for Alan Daroff and LP who keep all the daily operations on track. Secondly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Or Shalom Community that were there for myself and my family during a sad time earlier this year. As many of you who are reading this will know my wife Rita Levin passed away in April. I was a difficult time for myself and my children, but the Or Shalom community response was tremendous. We never had to ask for any help. Everybody stepped up and supported our family in the time of need. To me that is a testament to the strength of our congregation. I want to be part of a congregation that is there for you in the bad time and not just the good times. A couple weeks ago myself and my kids were invited by my cousin to a Saturday Shabbat service at The Little Shul (Congregation Shivtei Yeshuron Ezras Israel - http://www.thelittleshul.org/) in South Philadelphia. Going to the service really made me appreciate everything that we have at our Shul. Over the years I have heard a lot of complaints about the number of members, size of the school, etc. If the Little Shul can make it work in a row house in South Philadelphia I am confident we can make it work and excel in our large facility in Berwyn. Like I always tell my son “It is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog” As I am writing this article we are getting ready for a new school year. We recently signed a 2 year extension for the combined school with CBENT. The combined school was a success last year because it increased the class sizes and reduced our costs. We are expecting this year to be just as successful as or more successful than last year. Unfortunately, Na’ama (Education Director) has moved on to another opportunity. I am sure we all wish her the best of luck in her new job. Na’ama will be
greatly missed by the Or Shalom community. As part of the transition Ellen Glassman
will be the education director for the combined school. (continued next page)
HORIZONS 4 September 2017 Elul, 5777— Tishrei, 5778
Ellen was previously the education director for CBENT and has had the opportunity to get to know our kids over the last year. Now is the part you have all been waiting for … how you can help. The way I see it there are three main ways that you can help. Financially: This is the easiest way to help. Pay your dues, make a donation, and/
or attend an event. We run a very tight ship and we have been cutting into the amount we owe each year. This year we have had some unbudgeted expenses and you can help. The roof of the sanctuary is leaking and needs to be replaced. This is not an option and we have already contracted with a roofer for the replace-ment. We have been lucky that the only damage are some ceiling tiles in the foy-er. LP is working with the roofer to find a date that will not interfere with any of the planned services or activities. If you would like to help fund the roof you can make a donation to LP and/or attend the Salsa Dancing Event. We are also replacing the ceiling lights in the social hall. The new lights are LEDs which use less energy and the bulbs last longer. Or Shalom is going green. If you would like to sponsor a set of 3 lights for $500 please contact LP.
Physically: If you see something that needs to be done or a place that you can
help please coordinate with LP and do it. We are a small shul with limited full time staff. If you are waiting for somebody else to do something then it most likely will not get done. Please step up and take the initiative to do something.
Mentally: If you have an idea for a fun activity, a way to increase membership, or
just a general way to improve the shul please speak up. Talk to myself, LP, or a board member about your suggestion. I would like this to be a congregation that
listens to the members and takes action.
If there is anything about Or Shalom you would like to discuss please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]. I would rather hear with you directly then hear through the grapevine that there is a concern.
In closing, “Ask not what your shul can do for you, but ask what you can do for your shul.”
Andy

Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner
In our prayers recited during this holy season, we read of a book of life. “on Rosh Hashana it is written and on Yom Kippur it is sealed who will live and who will die” Does that mean my life is pre-ordained? Do I have no choice? A closer look will tell us that when God opens our “book of memories”, “ the signature of each of us is found” We are the ones who write our “book of life.” it is up to us to find meaning in these sacred hours we spend in shul. It is up to each of us to peruse our book of life and Sefer Hazikronot (book of memory) we wrote during the past year, and determine what we can change. Perhaps if we want to extend the metaphor, we should see ourselves as editors. As we look at the chapters we write/wrote we make appropriate changes. Some of those chapters are entitle “family” or “community” or “Judaism” or “charity”. On Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur we ask ourselves what did we write in those chapters? Did we do the best we could have? were we loving and giving to our children? were we compassionate? . and if we find ourselves lacking, as we all sometimes are, Rosh Hashana is the season for writing the outline for the chapters we will write in the year to come. I bless you and me and all of us, that we write chapters of life love and blessing and find ourselves written into the book of life
