As always, they include a combination of student and faculty accomplishments, in addition to some alumni highlights. Mohan Rao, Chair Mechanical Engineering Steve Anton Receives Kinslow Research Engineering Award Steven Anton, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, received the Kinslow Research Engineering Award at the Engineers Week Banquet. The Kinslow Research Engineering Award is given annually for the best paper written by a TTU engineering faculty member and published in a refereed professional journal. The award honors Professor Emeritus Ray Kinslow, who taught for 32 years at Tennessee Tech and served as head of the engineering science and mechanics department for 25 years. #ME Proud Each semester students in Steve Canfield’s Dynamics of Machinery (DOM) class select a group project. What makes this class project different is each one benefits a family in need. This semester, Tennessee Tech engineering students created a walker for a boy with Angelman Syndrome. Read More > Senior Capstone Design Students Partner with Sustainability Office Students in Senior Capstone Design class partnered with the Office of Sustainability to identify a way to recycle and reuse plastic bottles on campus by turning recycled plastic into 3D printing filament. Read More > Students attend E-Fest EAST at Penn State On April 13-15, a group of students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering attended the 2018 E-Fest EAST conference hosted by ASME at Penn State University and competed in the Human Powered Vehicle Competition (HPVC). Three groups of students selected the human powered vehicle as their senior capstone project and collaborated to combine their individual designs for the vehicle frame, drive train and aerodynamic needs. The HPV competition consisted of several different tracks which were combined to score each team in safety design and performance, innovation, speed, and ended with an endurance race on Sunday. Tech’s team, The Eagle, placed 25th overall out of the 47 teams in attendance. Student representatives from Tennessee Tech’s ASME Student Chapter also attended the conference and participated in the Student Design Competition (SDC), Oral Guard Poster Competition and professional sessions. Micah Hardyman won first place in the iAM3D CAD Battle and third place in the Oral Guard Poster Competition. This is the second year Tech has competed in this competition, with the first being last year at the inaugural E-Fest East Conference hosted by Tennessee Tech. Read More > Chesson and Farzin Win CMR Student Lightning Rounds David Chesson Gholamreza Mirchekari and Farzin Mashali with Interim Dean Darrell Hoy Congratulations to David Chesson, mechanical engineering, Ph.D., and Farzin Mashali, mechanical engineering, masters, for receiving the highest scores on the Center for Manufacturing Research (CMR) Student Lightning Round presentations! The presenters were scored by their peers and the highest scoring Masters student and Ph.D. student received a $500 travel stipend from the CMR. Additional congratulations to Farzin Mashali and Gholamreza Mirchekari winners at the 13th Annual Research and Creative Inquiry Day held at Tennessee Tech on April 9 and 10. They were selected as the Graduate Level winners in mechanical engineering for their paper titled, “Thermal Management Using Diamond Nanofluid.” Their research advisor is Ethan M. Languri, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Alumni Spotlight Jon Callies, a director for DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc., an affiliate of DENSO Corporation, and co-chair of the Mechanical Engineering External Advisory Board, was selected as this year’s Alumnus of the Year for the College of Engineering. The lounge underwent a complete renovation with interior finishes and furniture. Students now have a pleasant environment to collaborate on group projects or study quietly in preparation for exams. Students attend E-Fest EAST at Penn State

On April 13-15, a group of students from theDepartment of Mechanical Engineeringattended the 2018 E-Fest EAST conferencehosted by ASME at Penn State University andcompeted in the Human Powered VehicleCompetition (HPVC). Congratulations to David Chesson, mechanical engineering, Ph.D., and FarzinMashali, mechanical engineering, masters, for receiving the highest scores on theCenter for Manufacturing Research (CMR) Student Lightning Round presentations!The presenters were scored by their peers and the highest scoring Mastersstudent and Ph.D. student received a $500 travel stipend from the CMR.
