From the Director’s Desk
“We believe that you are a student of promise and that your promise continues here at the
Lake Charles-Boston Academy of Learning.” Greetings from the faculty and staff of the Lake Charles-Boston Academy of Learning. If you are interested in a career in criminal justice or law and order, a new curriculum that we will be offering in the fall of 2010 may be right for you. Preparations are currently underway to offer the students of Calcasieu Parish a law curriculum with a concentration in criminal justice or law and order. With a concentration in this curriculum, you could begin your studies in hopes of becoming an investigator, police officer, forensic scientist, paralegal, or an attorney. The courses to be offered include Law Studies I, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminal Courts, Forensic Science, and Computer Forensics. Each of these courses is a one hour, full year course. If you are interested in pursuing this curriculum, you can schedule either two one hour courses or three one hour courses for the school year. You may choose any combination of the courses as there are no pre-requisites. In addition, we are planning to incorporate a state-wide event named “Mock Trial” into the curriculum. Mock Trial is a competitive event where schools conduct a trial based on a set of circumstances given to each school in a prepared packet. Participants are given different roles within the legal proceedings and judged on how they fulfill those roles. Mock Trial promises to be an exciting event! We have also made an application with the Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education to be designated as a Law Signature School. If we are able to receive that designation, we hope to be eligible in the competition for a grant for the conversion of our classroom into a mock court room. In years to come, we hope to expand the Law Curriculum to include Law Studies II/III and Business Law. How exciting it is for our students to have the opportunity to participate in such an outstanding curriculum. If you or someone you know is interested in pursuing these courses, contact your counselor or log on to http://lakecharles.boston.cpsb.org for a 2010-2011 school year application. Hope to see you in class!
Mrs. Bridgette Culpepper
Full‐time faculty
I have been teaching for twelve years in Calcasieu Parish and am currently pursuing a master’s degree at McNeese State University in Educational Leadership. I am thoroughly enjoying my new teaching assignment at LCBA. I am the instructor for Early Childhood Education and the Teaching Professions Program. I have the opportunity to do all of those “teacher” things that I wish I had time for in the regular classroom, because that is the basis for these classes. I have been married for thirteen years and have three beautiful children. My oldest, Emily, is ten years old and in the fifth grade at Nelson Elementary. Grace, who is four-years-old, also attends Nelson and is in Pre-K. Last, but certainly not least, is Ryan who is 9 months old. I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my children. My professional accomplishments include: February 2004 – LAFCS Louisiana Teacher of the Year March 2004 – Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Distinguished Service Award April 2006 – Sulphur High School Teacher of the Year May 2006 – Calcasieu Parish High School Teacher of the Year July 2006 – LRA Southwest Chapter Associate Member of the Year May 2008 - City of Sulphur Teacher of the month August 2008 - LACTE Louisiana Outstanding Teacher of Community Service. I am also currently serving as state president of my division of LACTE and state treasurer of LACTE.

Career and Technical News
Digital Media and Web Design
The Digital Media/Web Design students have been working with the TV Production students to complete an informational DVD to give to the public about LCB Academy. Our students created the interface with information and links/interactivity and TV Production students created the videos. It was fun to combine “forces” with another class. The students are also learning Dreamweaver – not the 70s smash hit by Gary Wright – but the web design program by Adobe. Dreamweaver certification is coming up and then on to Flash!! Newsletter manager this six weeks was Lori C. (pictured last) – Good Job, Lori!

Early Childhood Education Students in the Early Childhood Education program recently completed requirements to receive CPR certification through the American Heart Association. This program prepares students for careers working with young children. Any person employed by a licensed child care facility must be CPR and first aid certified. Receiving this certification, which is valid for two years, may help these students be employable as a child care provider.

Sports Medicine This six-weeks period, students in Sports Medicine class have been working to improve their athletic taping and bandaging techniques. The class held a round robin taping tournament to help improve their tape application times. At the end of the unit students participated in the Second Annual Double-Elimination Heel-Lock Tournament. The competition was fierce and all students showed great improvement in their ability and time. Tanner H. from Sam Houston was the winner in the end. Congratulations Tanner!

E.M.T. and First Responder February was Career & Tech Month so we packed the month with guest speakers. We had a wide variety of speakers! We started on February 4 with The American Red Cross speaker S. Bennet who spoke to us about blood borne pathogens. As a class we gained a much needed certification. Mr. Dibbley’s class of athletic trainers joined us gaining certification as well! February 12 saw Officer Broussard speaking to us about illegal street drugs and abused prescription drugs. Mr. Dibbley’s and Ms. Davis classes joined us for this guest speaker, too. February 19 Officer Broussard of the Sheriff’s Office was back with information on gangs, including the hybrid gangs in our area. We learned to read the different gangs’ tagging, territories and signs. Mr. Dibbley’s and Ms. Davis classes joined us again. February 26 We concluded when the Southwest Louisiana AIDS Council came in for a very informative discussion on HIV, AIDS, and STDs. Both the athletic trainers and pharmacy tech students were in attendance. As you can see we had a fun filled career & tech month!
