“He Descended into Hell” by Rev. Timothy W.
Olson
1 Peter 3:18-19
What does it mean to say that Christ descended into hell as we
confess in the Apostles’ Creed? Luther’s Small Catechism says this:
“The Scriptures teach that Christ, after He was made alive in His
grave, descended into hell, not to suffer punishment, but to proclaim
His victory over His enemies in hell. As St. Peter says, “Christ was
put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom
also He went and preached to the spirits in prison” (1 Peter 3:18-
19). Also, St. Paul writes in Colossians, “Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public
spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (2:15).
When you hear this statement, “He descended into hell”, you may be tempted to believe that Jesus
went to hell to suffer for us. This, however, is not the case. He went to hell to declare his victory. Some think
that he went to hell to give others a second chance. It is clear from Scripture that this cannot be the case, be-
cause right after we die we face the judgment according to Hebrews 9:27.
Therefore, it is clear from Scripture that Jesus descended into hell to proclaim His victory over sin,
death and the power of the devil. “Christ descended into hell to declare His victory over death and all evil
forces…It is enough if we know that Christ descended into hell, destroyed hell for all believers, and deliv-
ered them from the power of death and of the devil, from eternal condemnation and the jaws of hell” (The
Lutheran Study Bible, page 2155).
This statement also declares that hell is real. We live in a world where many believe that hell is a
made-up place that does not exist. Scripture paints a very different picture. Hell is real and all who do not
believe in Jesus Christ as their only Savior from sin will spend eternity in hell. This should shock all of us
about what the future holds for those who do not believe in Jesus as their Savior from sin.
Bill Wiese wrote a book entitled, “23 Minutes in Hell.” I listened to his story on a video recently. On
this video, Bill tells about how he spent 23 minutes in hell one day through a vision that God gave him. I am
not sure whether he had this vision or not, but I am convinced that his message regarding hell’s existence is
true. The Bible declares this. Whether his description about what hell is like is true or not doesn’t matter.
Bill’s message is powerful because it is founded on the truth of the Bible. Hell is a real place of torment for
those who do not believe. In the account of the rich man and Lazarus, we have these words from the rich
man who is in hell: “…I am in agony in this fire” (Luke 16:24).
When we confess and proclaim these words “He descended into Hell”, we are proclaiming that Jesus
won the victory over the Devil and hell through His death on the cross for our sins and His glorious resurrec-
tion on the third day. This Easter as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection and his glorious victory for us over
sin, death and the power of the devil may we also realize how real hell is and that we do not want anyone to
go there. I pray that we will be moved as God’s people to pray: “Lord, give me conviction and compassion to
proclaim your Word to the world that everyone may know and believe as I do that Jesus is the “Way, the
Truth and the Life and that nobody comes to the Father except through Him” (John 14:6).

Stewardship
In April the season of Lent ends and the season of Easter begins. Lent is a time for repen-tance and reflection. During Lent we have a lengthy opportunity to take a careful look at ourselves and realize that way too often we fall short of our Lord’s expectations. We do what we should not be doing and we fail to do what we should be doing. This is true also for us as stewards. Rather than being generous in our use of time, talents and money we often selfishly use our lives and resources for ourselves rather than for God’s purposes. God blesses us with all of life and life’s resources so that we might be a blessing to others. Our old sin natures urge us to use all these things first for ourselves and then, if there is something left over, for others and God’s purposes.
We recognize with St. Paul that “it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faith-
ful.” (1 Corinthians 4:2) We have been entrusted with all of life and life’s resources (all owned by God) with the expectation that we will use them wisely and well. Way too often we fail to do what God expects. The good news is that when on Good Friday Jesus said “It is finished” He meant that with His holy life and sacrificial death He paid the full price our sins and guilt. So, when our past failures as God’s stewards bother us, we can take those sins and shortcomings to our Lord in prayer, repent of them and receive the assurance that we are made right with God through the sacrifice of Jesus. Forgiveness is the best way to handle our past failures! Easter brings us a breath of fresh air filled with joy and hope! As St. Paul wrote: “He [Jesus] was delivered
over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.” (Romans 4:25) That truth makes us into Easter people—people filled with joy and hope! Our memory of past shortcomings makes us feel guilty and ashamed. Easter replaces our failures and makes us into people of hope and hope is stronger than mem-ory because “Hope in Christ does not disappoint us because God has poured out His love into our hearts
by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.” (Romans 5:5)
On Easter we greet each other by saying that Jesus Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Because of Christ’s Easter victory we have the sure hope that we are redeemed stewards who, in cooperation with and encourage-ment from our fellow redeemed stewards, freely and joyfully manage all of life and life’s resources for God’s purposes. Dear fellow stewards, a happy Easter to you all!
Fellowship by Andrea LaGuire I am very excited to announce that FLC will be hosting a Talent Show, Friday, April 8, 7:00 p.m. This is a family event and NOT a fund-raising event. Do you play an instru-ment, sing, jump-rope, yo-yo, etc.? Do you have rhythm, good balance, etc.? If so, please
come and “WOW” the crowd with your talent. For example, I can touch my tongue to my nose! Gross, maybe, but can you do that? A sign up sheet will be located on the bulletin board by the mailboxes. On June 24 & 25 there will be a relay for life event at the Charlotte Highschool football field. Teams are made up of 8-15 individuals. I am very interested in participating and would love to put together a team for First Lutheran Church. Please contact me if you are interested (517) 667-1215 or [email protected] .

A preschooler went home during letter ‘T’ week and told his mother that he had learned about tomatoes. He went on to say that tomatoes come out of the sky and that they can wreck houses and lift cars off the ground. The mother said, “Oh, you mean tornadoes.” “Yes,” the preschooler said, “tormatoes.” We have two new preschool daycare children starting in April. It is exciting to meet new friends especially as we think about May coming, when preschool will end and our friends will be gone for the summer. It looks like play meets an academic goal. Studies show how the following activities teach skills:
Block building - mathematical goals, spatial concepts, problem solving, balance weight. Stringing beads - mathematical goals, corre-sponding counting, patterns, sequencing, liter-acy goals, visual motors coordination, vocabu-lary development.
Finger plays and rhyme - literacy goals, auditory discrimination, phonic skills, auditory memory,
concept development. Drawing and Painting - Literacy goals, symbolic representation, visual memory, visual motor coordination, creative expression.
Ms. Stephanie and I were engaged in a 15 hour infant toddler class in March. For me, it was a refresher and provided continuing education credits that are needed every year by staff. We will be taking more classes this June. The class created excitement in us as we look for-ward to the new building and the infant and toddlers that the Lord will send our way.
Needed: Left over craft supplies, envelopes. (Please drop supplies off to the church office or to the hallway that leads from the offices to the preschool - by the preschool storage room.)
