The Progressive IdentifierAt A Glance
The 2005 edition of the Progressive Identifier is the most up-to-date source of lens information available for ophthalmic professionals who want to identify progressive addition lenses (PALs)and any variable focus lenses, currently
available in the United States and Canada, including lenses that have been discontinued within the past five years.
An invaluable tool–What’s in it?What’s in the Progressive Identifier? What’s new in the ProgressiveIdentifier? Here are some tips, keys, terms, and directions to guideyou through the Identifier.
Two Hundred Seventy-Eight Lens Diagrams! – 40 morelenses than the previous version – including short corridor, office, computer lenses; and intermediate viewing range or near vari-able focus lenses!
• Lens suppliers have added symbols and codes to distinguish lensdesigns and materials.
• The Identifier shows both the number of lens diagrams and theindexes of symbols and codes.
• Larger Canadian Section than ever before.
Index Page Listings
• always show a number/letter combination = 4C,
• or number and range of letters = 5C-F,
• that locates the specific lens diagram(s) being referenced.
Index by Symbol
• Includes every symbol or code used by companies that submittedinformation
company identification symbols
180-line reference symbols (except the standard circle)
material identification symbols or codes.
• Lists every page where each symbol or code appears.
• Streamlined format lists symbol or code only once, without lensnames.
Index by Company
• Arranges the lenses by company rather than by symbol.
• Lists the company, the lens name, shows the symbols and codes, and gives the page listing location.
Index by Recommended Minimum Height
• Continuing this valuable tool, this index groups the lenses by themanufacturer’s recommended minimum height. You’ll find thatmany lenses have new recommended minimum heights.
Lens Diagrams
• Remember – all diagrams are shown as the Right Lens, with theConvex Side Up.
• Diagrams are not to scale, of course; symbols and codes havebeen enlarged for clarity.
• The footer on each page describes the information in the lens diagrams.
Location, location, locationIn order to identify the progressive lenses that a patient is wearing, doctors and dispensers must be able to locate two critical productidentifiers.
The Progressive Identifier illustrates the two key identifiers for each lens:
• The Identifying Symbol or company logo that on most lensesappears on the nasal side just beneath the 180° line. (In select-ed lenses the symbol may appear on the temporal side. This isindicated on the lens diagram.)
• Any unique Engraved Symbols that may be displayed on the 180line (the standard is two circles).
• Where there are no unique identifying symbols, the word “none”is shown on the lens diagram.
The Progressive Identifier also includes the following information foryour convenience:
• The distance of the Fitting Cross from the 180° line;
• Each lens manufacturer’s recommended minimum height.
Three steps to successWith the information contained in the Progressive Identifier, doctorsand retailers can quickly identify any lens currently being worn(including those recently discontinued), and confidently select the bestnew lens for their patients’ needs.
Step One: Most modern PALs are marked by laser engravings (someolder lenses may have fluorescent marks) that become easily visiblewhen viewed under an intense light against a dark background. Lookfor these engraved symbols and refer to the Indexes in the front of thebook.
Step Two: Determine the patient’s old Rx. If this is information is notin your records, read the prescription from the lens.
Step Three: Compare to the new Rx and assess any changes thatmight suggest a change in lens design or material. Remember toconsider your patient’s lifestyle, work habits, hobbies, and framechoice when choosing the appropriate lens.
For fitting tips and techniques, refer to the Indispensable DispensingGUIDE, published by OLA. Your OLA member laboratory will behappy to provide information on this and other products published byOLA. Or contact OLA directly at 800-477-5652.
The lens diagrams in the Identifier are not to scale. The lensdiagrams cannot be used to take measurements or preparefitting instructions. The symbols are shown in exaggerated sizefor clarity. The fitting cross is not shown at the actual distancefrom the 180 line. The purpose of this publication is identifi-cation of lenses, not fitting of lenses.

Center the frame over the pyra-mid lines, with The Fitting Crosslined up with the top horizontalline, marked “0.” This is the180° line as shown on the lensdiagrams in the ProgressiveIdentifier.
With the frame in this position, determine themonocular PD for each lens by reading the num-
ber on the horizontal line directly underneath the180° line.
With the Fitting Crosspositioned on the topline, the fitting height ofeach lens can be deter-mined by reading thenumber on the line wherethe bottom of the lensrests.
Frame Fitting1. Before taking any measurements, make sure thepatient is sitting straight, without any back support.2. Adjust the frame to correctly fit the patient.3. Ensure a pantascopic tilt of 9° -12°.4. Minimize the vertex distance by fitting the frameas close to the face as possible. This will ensure awide field of vision at all ranges.
Pupil Distance MeasurementBe aware that the PD can differ from eye to eye.1. Whenever possible, use a pupilometer for measur-ing pupil distance, as this provides the most accurateresults.2. If a pupilometer is not available:a. Position yourself at the patient’s eye level, makingsure he or she is looking directly into your eyes.b. Mark the pupil center on the demo lens in the frame.c. Place the demo lens on the centration chart andread the monocular PD.
Height Measurement FittingBe aware that the fitting height can differfrom eye toeye.1. Position yourself at the patient’s eye level.2. Mark the pupil center on the demo lens in theframe.
Cut-Out Confirmation1. Check both the right and left lenses.2. Align the pupil center marking over the cross onthe centration chart.3. Make sure the frame shape falls within theselected lens diameter.
Lens Verification1. If lenses are not marked, restore the markings witha marker.2. Fit the frame with the glazed lenses on the patientand verify that the fitting cross is aligned with thepupil center.
