Kenya, the dominant economy of East Africa, is the financial and communication hub, not only of the East African region but is also among the top economies in the continent. Kenya is a member-state of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC). The capital Nairobi is regional commercial hub and the economy of Kenya is the largest by GDP in South-east and Southern Africa.

Within the EAC, the Kenyan economy is the anchor and much more dynamic than those of other member countries. The country’s economy is much better linked to the other economies in terms of investment flows and trade. Thanks to its more advanced human capital base, its more diversified economy, and its role as a leader in the information communication revolution in the region, Kenya’s economy is expected to remain strong, creating salutary benefits to the other member countries.

KENYA is located in the eastern part of the African continent,

in a geographical area rich in natural and mineral resources, which pro-vides significant economic poten-tial. The country borders Somalia, Uganda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

EconomyKenya is the biggest and most ad-vanced economy in east and central Africa, Kenya’s economy grew by 4.5% last year. The economy has seen much expansion in Pharmaceuticals, Food processing, Tourism, Higher education, Telecommunications, and Agriculture. Kenyan economy has posted tremendous growth in the service sector, boosted by rapid expansion in telecommunica-tion and financial activity over the last decade, and now contrib-utes 62% of GDP.

Industrial activity – concentrated around the three largest urban centres, Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu – is dominated by food-processing industries such as grain milling, beer production, and sugarcane crushing, and the fabrication of consumer goods. Recent discoveries of minerals in Kenya are expected to further expand fiscal space as well as public spending in Kenya. There is a vibrant and fast growing cement production industry. Kenya has an oil refinery that processes imported crude petroleum into petroleum products, mainly for the domestic market.

The Kenyan pharmaceuticals and healthcare market presents significant revenue earning opportunities for drug companies. Growth in the sector will be boosted by strong demograph-ics, increased healthcare needs, longer life expectancy, rising healthcare spending in the public and private sectors and improved access to health facilities. The countries pharmaceuti-cal and consumer health market is estimated to be worth an estimated US$160 million each year. Kenya ex-ports its medical and pharmaceutical products to Tanzania, Uganda, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and Ma-lawi among other destinations.

The agricultural sector is the largest employer in Kenya, contributing 23.4% of GDP. The country’s major exports are tea, coffee, cut flowers, and vegetables. Kenya is the world’s lead-ing exporter of black tea and tea is one of Kenya’s top foreign exchange earners.

Kenya, the gateway to the East African market, is one of the fastest growing markets in the world and INDEE Kenya is expected to attract thousands of buyers and decision-makers from across the region and aims to promote a direct business link between buyers and sellers. With its largest sea port in Mombasa, Kenya is the largest incoming source of products by sea to the East African region from the Arab countries, the Indian subconti-nent, Europe and the Far East.
