man·i·fes·ta·tionNoun:
1. An event, action, or object that clearly shows or embodies some-thing, esp. a theory or an abstract idea: “manifestations of global warming”. 2. The action or fact of showing something in such a way: “the manifestation of anxiety”.
This is the research I have done to understand the word manifesto better. I looked at definition, read books, magazines and looked for people interested in manifestos.

VISUALIZATIONS
The pieces of work I have done are all based on researching a manifesto with issues that are important to me. I cover consumerism, feminism, and the media. To try different ways of presenting manifestos I chose various mediums, like interven-tion, photography, illustration, collages and mixed media.

FUTURISTIC approach
I used the book “100 Artists’ Manifestos“ to recreate a new manifesto by covering some parts of sentences. The red-ish page also represents a burning book showing the Futurists belief in old books which accord-ing to them were only graves in librarys and should be burnt.

Messing With The Meaning
This typographical poster is a conclusion from looking at the meaning of the word “manifesto“. The words were collected from the book “100 Artists’ Manifestos“.
Part I - denial
Part II - blindness
FAKEnatural
Part 1. Denial
I used intervention to show lack of understanding or wrong perspectives people have which influences our lives.
Part II. Blindness
Everything alive is perfect as it is
Every living form is strongest when in peace and relationship with others
Everything alive is free
Everything alive is a beautiful indivudual component of the world
Everything alive doesn’t have to bedestroyed because of narrow-mindedness
CONSUMERISM
This collage is a presentation of the rich and poor countries’ relationship. It shows how rich countries influence poor ones and gives a strong observation of the issue. Countries like America are the biggest consumers, while many African countries are dying from starvation..
- What are you doing?- Spreading a feminism idea...
A mirror instalation I used to raise the feminism question. The mirror distorts the body infront and makes it look ex-tremely skinny. A girl standing infront of it was encouraged to think about how popular culture is influencing women‘s perception of themselves; why media turns women into skeletons in order to look more attractive and successful. I am comparing such women with women in poor countries who do not have a choice while others decide to starve.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ATTACK
Collage representing the masses of information attacking people. I believe that in contemporary culture people do not have a different choice but to be surrounded by mass media.
PSYCHOLOGICAL ATTACK
BLINKERED SOCIETY
I have created blinkers from a newspaper to represent how narrow peoples perspective is nowadays. Even though they want to see a different point of view, all they can see is information that the media wants them to absorb.
Here I decided to be more extreme and to use a newspaper spread to cover the whole face. It is another presentation of the understanding and perceptions people have which are mostly based on what the media tells them.
RODERICK MILLSWORKSHOP
The workshop was based on experimental drawing, during which I created various collages.
LAB WEEK
I found the LAB week very inspiring and useful. It was a great opportunity to meet all different creators and be familiarised with their work. I went to all five talks and was delighted to listen to their stories about how they came to the design world. Hellicar and Lewis and Roderick Mills motivated me not to be afraid to travel to different countries and to work with vari-ous projects. It was great to listen to their advice and experiences. After the week I was left with a great amount of useful tips from all the creators. I think that A LAB week like this is essential to everyone and has to be repeated!
Evaluation
I feel the Independent Practice unit was a big step forward. I concentrated on my own experiences and beliefs, which allowed me to look at my work from a different point of view. My Independent Practise project is Manifestos. I decided to challenge a manifesto and tried various mediums to create it. I was working with contemporary issues that are important to me. I looked at con-sumerism, feminism and mass media. To be inspired to work on these subjects I was influenced by few people and my personal past experience; knowledge which finally brought me to these issues. I also tried to use different techniques in visualising my work, like photography, interventions, illustrations, collages and mixed medias. I’ve started looking at contemporary consumerism culture and its influ-ence made to other countries. For example, America as the country which con-sumes the most, is highly influencing poor countries. This took me to another subject – how popular culture is influencing women and their understanding of what beauty is. I chose to compare women who aren’t happy with their bodies with women who are forced to starve because their countries are extremely poor. I have also built an installation during the Independent Practise exhibition day to represent this idea to both men and women. I used paper with mirror effect that was partly bent and stuck on the wall. All reflections were distorted and bodies in front of the mirror looked very skinny. Moreover, I’ve created a typeface for the word “feminine”. The word is built from images of starving women. One woman in the image is dragging the word (feminine), representing how impossibly difficult a woman’s life can be when surrounded by aggressive perfection messages in mass media. Two previous themes brought me to the mass media issue. All my life, except for the most recent couple of years, I used to watch television and read newspapers. Then I understood that it was not doing me any good and was just simply changing my thinking to a useless way. Led by that and encouraged by Charlie Veitch’s work, I decided to talk about this subject. I am presenting people wearing “horses’ glasses” – blinkers. Their main purpose is to prevent the “sub-ject” from seeing what is happening at the edges of their field of vision. In this case I decided to make a pair of blinkers with the inside covered in newspaper articles. It means that people’s perspectives are restricted by information from the media. Another experiment I tried was giving people newspaper “masks” covering all their faces. It becomes the only truth and reality people understand and accept in todays world. The work I have done so far is being explored in wider contexts. I also plan to send some of my collages to “Adbusters” magazine to share my ideas. At the moment I am looking for more places my style of work could be presented.
