➢ Hydrogen is a chemical element that is rarely available in a naturally free state. Hydrogen gas is colorless, odorless,
tasteless and non-toxic. In India, hydrogen is mainly produced using Steam Methane Reforming and Membrane Cell
Technology.
➢ A large share of hydrogen produced in India is by Steam Methane Reforming. In this process, a high temperature steam
under the range, 700°C–1,000°C, is used to produce hydrogen from methane source, such as natural gas. Methane reacts
with steam under 3-25 bar pressure in the presence of a catalyst to produce hydrogen and other by-products.
➢ Hydrogen Specification:
• Carbon-free• Lighter than air• Clean
• Odorless• Non-toxic• Safe to produce, store and
transport

India Hydrogen Market Set To Cross $365 Million by 2022
According to TechSci Research report “India Hydrogen Market By Technology, By Mode, ByApplication, Competition Forecast& Opportunities, 2012 – 2022’’, hydrogen market inIndia is forecast to reach $ 365 million by 2022. In 2016, Gujarat Alkalies and ChemicalsLimited held the largest market share; however, with the announced merger of Linde andPraxair expected to be completed in the coming few years, the new combined entity isanticipated to capture the largest market share in India hydrogen market by 2022. Evolvingtechnologies and rising demand for on-site hydrogen from refineries and chemical andpetrochemical plants is likely to aid Linde-Praxair’s dominating market position.
In India, major sources of hydrogen include steam reforming of naphtha and natural gas, chlor-alkali production and electrolysis of hydrogen. Petroleum refineries also install on-purposehydrogen production facilities to address the growing need for hydro-desulfurization of fuelssuch as diesel and petrol. India hydrogen market is dominated by the captive mode ofconsumption as it is used to produce ammonia and methanol. West India accounts for thelargest share in hydrogen market in the country, due to the presence of refineries and chemicaland petrochemical companies such as Reliance Industries, Essar Oil, Indian Oil Corporation,Grasim Industries, Tata Chemicals and others in the region.
“Growing economy is expected to give a boost to chemical consumption in the country, whichwould create huge opportunities for investments in the chemical sector, thereby aiding Indiahydrogen market during the forecast period. Growing government regulations towardsdesulfurization of petroleum products and intensifying demand for cleaner fuels are some of theother factors that would positively influence the hydrogen market in India over the course ofnext five years.”, said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a researchbased global management consulting firm.
