Professionalism at the workplace

WHAT IS BUSINESS ETIQUETTE?

Rules that allow us to interact in a civilized fashion Code of behavior that is grounded in common sense and cultural norms.

WHY DO WE NEED BUSINESS ETIQUETTE?

Creating and maintaining a professional impression within the workplace can be the first step towards a successful career.

Etiquette is about presenting yourself with the kind of polish that shows you can be taken seriously.

Etiquette is also being comfortable around people. Most behavior that is perceived as disrespectful, discourteous, or abrasive is

unintentional and could have been avoided by practicing good manners or etiquette.

expressions you send. Eye contact builds rapport. Good eye contact involves looking at the speaker, moderating

eye movements and blinking, relaxed facial expressions and maintaining contact about 60-70% of the time.

SMILE A smile is a natural emotional response to something

pleasurable. The smile communicates positive qualities about you. Connect your smile to appropriate movements and gestures to

create the right impression. Intersperse a reassuring smile with your message.

The basics of business etiquette

SHARING BUSINESS CARDS Ensure plentiful supply of your business cards. Cards should be exchanged at the beginning or end of the

initial meeting Business cards should be clean and up-to-date

Wrinkled, stained, or torn cards should be avoided. Business cards with words scratched out gives the

impression of disorganization. Store your cards in a nice holder so that they don’t get

bent. Treat cards with respect when receiving them Do not put a card in your pocket without looking at it Hold the cards in both hands when offering it. Or at least use

your right hand for exchanging cards Hand out cards with the face-up. Wait until someone of higher rank asks for your card or a

third party has introduced you.
