Health & Safety
You should take all necessarypreparations to ensure your site issafe to work on. Here are somedos and don’ts to help you createa safe working environment.
Don Use safety nets as fall arrest
equipment.
n Clearly define and properlysupervise working positions andaccess to the roof.
n Provide a scraper at the bottom ofall ladders to clean boots.
n Wear suitable clothing and boots, avoiding loose, flapping clothingand trousers.
n Treat all roofs as fragile and alwaysuse crawling boards, roof laddersand walkways.
n Lay correct staging over the purlinsahead of covering.
n Use two or more workers for safehandling of sheets if necessary.
n Always fully fix sheeting beforemoving on.
n Remove all loose material from theroof as work proceeds.
n Take extra care on roofs duringwindy, wet or frost conditions.
n Consider load-bearing capacitywhen transporting heavy loadsover the roof.
n Provide properly constructedwalkways where regular access isrequired to reach roof lights, ventilation and service ducts.
n Check carefully for any roof lightsin non-fragile roofs as they can bedifficult to spot. They may havebeen painted over. In brightsunshine they can blend in with thesurrounding sheets.
n Take precautions to prevent fallswherever the job involves passingby or working within 2m of fragileroof lights. For example: fitsuitable, secure covers over theroof lights; provide suitable guardrails and toe boards around theroof lights; provide a safety net, airbag or similar immediatelybelow the roof light.
n Always observe the relevantprovisions of the Health & SafetyAct, and any other legislationcurrently in force.
Don’tn Carry out work directly below the
area being covered.
n Stack materials on roofs, unlessspecified by manufacture load outinstructions.
n Leave tools on the roof space.
n Cut in confined spaces unless dustextraction equipment is available.
CE MarkingCE marking is mandatory for allconstruction products covered by aharmonised technical specification, either a harmonised European Standardor a European Technical Assessment, from July 1, 2013.
CE marking for structural products, such as purlins and rails, was introducedfrom July 1, 2014.
n This regulation is EU law and isbeing adopted by all memberstates, including the UK.
n The entire supply and distributionchain is responsible for ensuringcorrect CE marking on products.
n Manufacturers, importers, anddistributors must be aware ofessential characteristics andspecification requirements of theproduct for the member state theyare selling in.
We supply certification of CE marking onrequest, where required. Should yourequire more information on CE markingplease contact us.
CE marking is the only way todemonstrate that a product, or system, complies with the Construction ProductsRegulation. It is a manufacturer’sdeclaration that their product meets theminimum requirements of a harmonisedtechnical specification, enabling themand their agents to place their product onthe construction market.
