KMS Modern Solutions for Complex Challenges
Industrial Waterand WastewaterTreatment
Meeting the challenge
Water, once thought of as inexhaustible, is now seen
as a shrinking resource. Water dependent industries are facing
unprecedented demands from local, state and federal regulators.
Compliance with strict new codes is driving up the cost of water.
Koch Membrane Systems (KMS) membranes provide a
variety of cost-effective treatment solutions.
Industrial Waterand Wastewater Treatment
Membrane technology can be used
to treat raw water making it pure
enough to be used for a variety of purposes.
It can also treat industrial wastewaters to
meet stringent discharge regulations.
In many cases, membranes can
produce treated wastewater
that is clean enough for reuse
within the factory.

Experience in Membranes
For more than 30 years, KMS has been a world-class developer and
manufacturer of innovative membrane filtration systems serving a global
customer base in nearly 100 countries. KMS developed and manufactured
the first spiral element, pioneered the application of crossflow ultrafiltration
in wastewater treatment, and took the lead in the use of reverse osmosis for
brackish water treatment.
Today, KMS continues at the forefront of advances in membrane
filtration and separation technology, recently acquiring state-of-the-art
submerged membrane technology.

Membrane Configurations
There are three main configurations of
membranes used in industrial water and
wastewater applications: tubular, hollow fiber,
and spiral membranes.
Tubular membranes have an open channel
configuration capable of handling extremely high
suspended solids loads. They are well suited for
applications in heavy industrial wastes including
oily wastewaters.
Spiral membranes have the advantage of very high membrane packing
density. Available in a wide variety of diameters, lengths and materials,
they are used for applications including desalination, water softening, and
water reuse.
Hollow fiber membranes provide the advantage of high packing density
with the unique ability to be backflushed. Available in both pressure
cartridges and submerged vacuum modules, they can be applied in
applications as diverse as boiler feed water, high purity water and
membrane bioreactors (MBR).
Separation Technologies
KMS offers membrane products in a
variety of configurations, materials
and pore sizes; each designed to meet
specific application needs. There are
four key membrane separation
processes: microfiltration (MF),
ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration
(NF) and reverse osmosis (RO).

Piloting – Pilot data is needed to generate the
most cost effective system design and to
determine an economical cleaning regimen.
KMS maintains a fleet of pilot units that can be
leased along with the services of experienced
process engineers. All pilots employ full size
commercially available products to demonstrate
suitability of membranes for the application.
Membrane Systems – Standard modular designs from KMS provide practical, cost-effective solutions.
A packaged system consists of standard components pre-engineered into a self-contained unit, making it
economical to transport and easy to install. All of our systems are available with automated controls and
instrumentation to simplify operation and can be easily integrated into your plant’s overall control
scheme. In addition to our packaged plants, KMS can also design and deliver customized solutions
tailored to fit seamlessly into your existing facility. KMS has a dedicated team of experienced process
engineers and service professionals to provide technical assistance during installation and start-up.
After-Sale Support – For ongoing technical support long after
installation is complete, KMS provides various levels of assistance
with the KMS ASSIST® Service and Maintenance Program.
Depending on your requirements, you can select the level of support
that you need. KMS also provides KOCHKLEEN® chemicals which
are specifically formulated to provide efficient cleaning of membranes
