CLEAN AND JERKThe clean and the jerk is a multi-movement lift. There are two parts in this exercise; the first part of the movement phase is the Clean. During the clean phase, you will lift the barbell from the floor to the shoulders and rack it on the clavicle in one continuous explosive movement; the second movement is the Jerk; in this movement, the barbell is driven from the shoulders to arms length overhead. The lift is complete when the feet are in line and the bar under control.

Part one: the clean> PREPARATION 1. Position a barbell with weights on the ground in front of you. Place your feet flat on the floor about hip wide under the bar. Squat down and grip the bar with an over hand grip slightly wider than shoulder width. Keep the shoulders over the bar with the back tight and slightly arched arms straight and firm, head facing forward and inhale.

> EXECUTION 2. Pull the bar off the floor by forcefully extending the hips and knees, keep the shoulders in front of the bar and keep the bar close to your body. As the bar reaches the knees, vigorously raise the shoulders while keeping the bar close to your thighs. Jump upward extending the body, shrug the shoulders and pull the bar upward with arms straight and flex the elbows out to the sides, pull your body under the bar as you raise it while rotating the elbows around the bar. Catch the bar on the shoulders while moving into a squat position, keep your head up and torso thigh, exhale as you’re standing up. (Just like front squat movement).

Note: Do not let your hips rise faster than your shoulders when pulling up the weight.

Part 2: the jerk> EXPLODE

3. After recovering from the clean, make breathing and grip adjustments if necessary. Hold the chest high, elbows to the front, inhale, keep your core tight, then quickly DIP straight down about 6 inches by bending the knees and ankles, forcefully drive upward with the legs, explosively driving the barbell off the shoulders and splitting the legs (like a lunge position, one foot forward and the other backward simultaneously with speed) while forcefully extending the arms overhead, maintain control, then bring both feet together, push off the front leg and take one step back, push off the back leg and take one step forward, the lift is completed.

Note: Do not jerk the weight from the floor, arise steadily then accelerate. For beginners, start out mimicking the lift exercise movement with only a barbell; add weight only when you feel confident that you have learned the technique.

EXPLOSIVE TRAINING

Explosive training is a high intensity training technique. Explosive training is a concept that appeals to a great number of strength and conditioning professionals, athletic trainers, athletes, and non-athletes alike. Performing exercises in an explosive manner has been shown to produce favorable results in terms of athletic performance. The main principle of explosive exercise is to improve the ability to generate power and strength to equal speed. Simply put, the goal of explosive training is to move heavy weights or objects (power & strength) quickly (speed). When you think of power lifters, I am sure that strength comes to mind, and when you think of sprinters you think of speed. Yet even though power lifters and sprinters are two entirely different athletes, they both benefit from explosive training. Olympic sprinters, for example, need to generate that “BURST” of power right at the starting line. Football players have been using this type of training for years, as well as many other professional sports. When I’m not competing for professional bodybuilding shows, I include this type of training into my regimen to enhance my strength, size, athleticism, power and speed. Explosive Training also helps reduce risks of injuries during activities that involve high power outputs with quick acceleration.

Explosive training is an excellent training program to enhance our health and assist us with our performance inside and outside of the gym. To understand Explosive Training, you need a brief understanding of how muscle fibers work. Many people believe that having faster and slow twitch muscle fibers determine what sports an athlete excels at and how they respond to training. It is generally accepted that muscle fiber types can be broken down into two main types: slow twitch (Type I) and fast twitch (Type II) muscle fibers. The slow twitch muscles are more efficient at using oxygen to generate more fuel for continuous, extended muscle contractions over a long period of time. Slow twitch fibers help athletes run marathons or play for longer periods of time. Fast twitch fibers generate short bursts of strength or speed, but can >>

Each part of this exercise should be preformed as its own exercise. Therefore, there will be three parts: First—three sets of the clean, then three sets of the jerk, and finally the combination of the two movements, three sets of a full clean and jerk.

< THE CLEAN3 SETS of 6-8 REPS

Follow the above # 1 and # 2 directions for the clean exercise. When lowering the bar, keep the knees slightly bent, exhaling while lowering the bar slowly to the ground in the reverse order of the lift, and repeat from the start.

< THE JERK3 SETS of 6-8 REPS

Use a squat rack stand at shoulder height. Evenly load the bar with the appropriate amount of weights. Lift the bar from the stand and rest it on your shoulders and follow directions #3 from the jerk lift movement exercise; after you have completed the lift, exhale, return to the start position by carefully lowering the bar to the shoulders, recover, make adjustments if needed, and repeat.

< THE CLEAN AND JERK3 SETS of 1 REP

Following steps 1 & 2 and right into step # 3 (this is the actual Olympic lift movement)

The other important exercise is the Plyometric movement. Plyometric exercises are considered to help bridge the gap between strength and speed by developing the stretch reflexes, which in turn will help in developing more powerful muscles, greater balance, coordination, agility, and speed. European athletes have capitalized on this exercise for many years. There are many variations of Plyometric exercises and levels of intentions. Again, for this article I will stick with the basics for power and speed.

PLYOMETRICS

BOX JUMP3 SETS OF 6 - 10 JUMPS REPS

1. Stand facing the box with feet slightly wider than hip-width apart.

2. Lower body into a semi-squat position and immediately jump up onto box. Do not hold a squat position before jumping up – keep the time between dipping down and jumping up to a minimum.

3. Feet should land softly on box. Step back down and repeat.

Note. Concentrate on the feet positions when jumping and landing, try to keep the heels off the ground when landing.

LATERAL BOX JUMP 4 SETS (2 SETS ON EACH SIDE) OF 6 – 10 JUMPS REPS

1. Stand on a side of the jump box with feet slightly wider than hip-width apart.

2. Lower body into a semi-squat position and jump up onto box. Do not hold a squat position before jumping up – keep the time between dipping down and jumping up to a minimum.

3. Feet should land softly on box, step back down, and repeat.

4. Pause, take a minute or two to recover

5. Stand on other side of box and repeat the same

Note: When performing the jumps, execution is very important; if they are not done with maximum effort and speed, the training effect will not be optimal. It is important to warm up first, then stretch your body (a great way to warm up for Plyometric is jump roping exercises). It’s imperative that you train at the level of your fitness ability. As you master the technique, to become stronger and faster, increase the size (height) of the box or the bench and the intensity level accordingly.

<< only be sustained for very short periods. Having faster twitch fibers is beneficial for explosive speed since it quickly generates a great amount of force. It is generally held that muscle may switch fiber types from “fast” to “slow” due to training. This would account for the difference in muscle type distribution among athletes in different sports. This means that proper training may increase the desired amount of muscle fiber by slightly altering slow-twitch fiber to fast-twitch or vice versa.

Explosive Training Accomplished with Olympic Lifts and Plyometric Movement. By combining Olympic lifts and a Plyometric training program you will be well on your way to developing fast explosive power, and who wouldn’t want that! The sport of Olympic lifting is comprised of two lifts: the Snatch and Clean & Jerk. Both are tests of power and strength and require a great amount of technical expertise with speed. In the snatch, the athlete must move the bar from the floor to an overhead position. In the clean & jerk, the athlete must first move the bar from the floor to the shoulders, and then from the shoulders to an overhead position. For the purpose of this article I prefer to discuss only the Clean and Jerk movement of the Olympic lift, which by itself is just as effective with out the extra risk. The snatch is a difficult and riskier movement and should only be performed after complete technique is mastered.

Proper technique: The integrity of the exercise movement should never be compromised for lifting more weight. As with any form of training, start out slow and increase only when you have mastered the technique. What made you join the I Am Juggernaut Challenge?

I was overseas at the time in Afghanistan and since I had done The Arnold portion prior, I figured why not do it again. I was lucky enough to be named a Junior Juggernaut for The Arnold portion and was extremely grateful for that. I honestly didn’t think I was going to win, but regardless, my overall goal was to beat some personal best records and push my body further than I ever have. I was so glad just to have fun with it, and the support system was crucial while I was overseas as well.

What was the hardest part of the Challenge for you?

Honestly, the hardest part for me was making sure my blog appealed to everyone. I wanted to ensure I kept it as detailed as possible, as well show that the diet could still be done even when things were scarce on a Marine Corps Base. I made sure to log my workouts in detail as well just so that if others wanted to take away from my own workouts to add to their regimens, then it would be easy for them to do so.

What did you think of your experience in Las Vegas?

First and foremost, I have been to Vegas many

times, but this time was better than anytime I have ever gone. It was amazing. I made great friends and had a ball with the whole Infinite Labs® crew. It was like a home away from home with family and more rather than just a win. It was a phenomenal experience with a fantastic group of individuals. I could not ask for more that is for sure. A huge thank you to Infinite Labs® for choosing me as a Juggernaut and having me out there representing a great brand. I truly appreciate it, and it was my pleasure and such an honor being there with them.

If you could do it all over again, would you?

Is that even a question? From this guy, you get an EMPHATIC HELL YES.

What were some things you learned along your journey?

I learned that this challenge brings out the best in not only yourself but in everyone around you. The community as a whole is fantastic and so supportive it is just insane. You don’t find that easily in what we like to do with our mindset of training and nutrition. You usually get those deer in the headlights look from people because they are like, “Why are you eating so healthy or so many meals?” and so forth. People don’t understand that this is a lifestyle and the negativity isn’t necessary. So, I just take all that talking and so forth that people say and use it to better myself. The best way I look at it is I will look better than that guy that drinks beer on the weekends and eats terribly. I’m the guy that he secretly admires. So I say bring on all the hatred. It’s good for the process and journey of my goal to be on that stage for the NPC in Physique and hopefully going far in this industry competing. The only thing that can stop me is myself, and I don’t see that happening.

What Infinite Labs® products would you say helped you the most to reach your goal as an I Am Juggernaut Champion?

I would have to say Juggernaut® and Juggernaut®

HP first. If it wasn’t for this pre- workout formula, I do not see myself making the gains I made throughout my training. The pumps were fantastic, and the fact that there is no crash afterwards is amazing. Next, I would have to say Infinite Pro® Whey Protein and Infinite Mass® because without them, I would not have had the protein synthesis I truly needed to grow. So thank you for those. Last, but not least is Massport™. The recovery was huge, and I was able to get back to work the next day and train hard without the soreness impeding my workout. I have to say these products were my base, and I have recently added on some other great Infinite Labs® products.

What are your plans now that the challenge and Olympia is over and you have returned home?

First off, I am looking to help coach my wife, Sylvia Velez, through the rest of her Arnold portion. I am looking forward to that, as well as looking to continue my own training, bulking up a bit to add some more size for next year when I look to compete. I can’t wait to see how my wife’s experience in this challenge goes for her.

Do you have any last words to The Arnold Juggernauts currently working towards The Arnold portion of the challenge?

Have fun first and foremost. If you’re not having fun, then you aren’t truly getting what this challenge is about. Sure winning is amazing and fantastic, but the goal should not be just to win. It should be about bettering yourself as a person and athlete as well as to be a great support system for your fellow Juggernauts. We’re a family, and if we don’t look out for one another then there is no reason for you to be in this challenge in my honest opinion. So train hard, train smart and be sure to keep those blogs going strong, and continue to show that support.

What new Infinite Labs® Products do you plan to add into your current Infinite Labs® Stack?

I want to try as many as possible. Dagger™ was great when I tried it at the expo, so that will be one of the first products I add for sure. There are so many great products coming from Infinite Labs® that there is no way I would not be one to try them all if possible. Where do I even begin? I guess it makes sense to start at the beginning of the “I am Juggernaut” contest, when I entered in April. I NEVER expected to be a finalist. One of the reps, whom I became acquainted with on bodyspace, Hope Smallwonder, suggested that I enter it- so I did! I just figured sure, why not.

At that time, I had rarely ever used supplements. Occasionally, I used a pre-workout; usually samples that were just given to me. I probably tried just about every pre-workout sample out there! I used protein shakes too, but other than that, the only supplements I used were vitamins and fish oil capsules. I really did not know much about how to use any other supplement, or what its effects would be, or what difference the ingredients made. At the time I entered the contest, I lacked guidance in my fitness and nutrition goals. I loved to work out, but I was stuck on the skinny train. When it comes to food science, I am very knowledgeable, as is reflected in the results my weight loss clients achieve, but I am very bad at taking my own advice and knowing what is best for my OWN body without a skewed perception. I definitely lacked guidance and support, not being in an environment with many other people like myself to relate to. All of that changed during the challenge. I can’t really describe to you how much my mindset has changed within the past 6 months; today, I feel strong and motivated and goal- oriented!

The hardest part about the IAJ challenge was keeping up with the logs and doing my best to read and comment on others. I was one of the

first of maybe ten people to start their forum threads, so there were only a few of us to start with. I had no idea how big the Juggernaut nation would grow to be! As the list of competitors expanded, I had to set my attention on 15 or so logs that I would follow and regularly check in on. With other logs, I would do my best to welcome newbies or throw out a bit of motivation. I am a pre-med student,and I was going through finals, prepping for my first figure competition, DOING my first figure competition, and struggling with some intense family issues. It was really hard to find the time to log, but I WANTED to! The support and feedback I received from my new Juggernaut friends made every last second so worth it.

Vegas was incredible! Imagine half of all the fitness fanatics in America, and some from other countries, combined into one bustling convention center.

Everyone there is hungry to gain knowledge, share experiences and get tons of free stuff! Every square inch of the convention center was occupied with a different supplement, and beautiful, ripped people at every booth. The Infinite Labs® booth was giving out t-shirts, recruiting new Infinite Labs® fans, and the pro’s were spreading knowledge about the products and educating people about their fitness goals. The Juggernauts were able to help showcase the new Whey Delite™, with real chunks of fruit/ chocolate (SO GLAD THEY HAD THIS! I was really hoping it would be there!), along with Juggernaut® HP pink lemonade and Dagger™. Every person who stopped by to try the Juggernaut® HP was shocked at how great it tasted; almost every person remarked the same thing—a pre-workout that “ACTUALLY tastes good!” Others noted that it was “smooth” and “refreshing” rather than “grainy” and “super sugary.” I think Infinite Labs® gained a lot of attention, just based on that alone.There was never a dull moment in Vegas. Infinite Labs® hooked us up with VIP passes to every event you could imagine, including the opportunity to meet the pros, amazing seats at pre-judging and finals (plus, we got to hang out with Joe all night!), early entrance to the expo, and the victory gala after finals. We felt like kind of a big deal, to say the least. What an AMAZING experience! There was so much to do and see in Vegas that there’s no way we could really have had time to cover even half of it, so the 5 of us decided we must make it an annual event. I welcome all of the Juggernauts, aspiring and current, to join us!

If I could do it all again, I would in a heartbeat! Talk about a learning experience. I knew almost nothing about supplements prior to this competition. Now, I understand goal-specific supplementation, thanks to the athletes at

Infinite Labs®. They don’t believe you should just buy any supplement just to buy it; they actually will answer any questions you have and help you to coordinate your nutrition and supplementation according to your goals. I can’t tell you how helpful they have been. To be honest, I used to attribute supplements with a slightly negative connotation. I thought that using supplements was like cheating. The truth is that it isn’t. Supplements do exactly what the name implies; if the nutrition and the training are in line, they accelerate you towards your goals, but they cannot do the work. Besides, I found out that all of Infinite Labs®’ products are made to Olympic standard, so they are not polluting my body with all types of unnecessary foreign substances and fillers. Now, I can’t imagine NOT using them!

Now, I use the Infinite Pro® Vanilla Whey post- workout, and in my protein powder recipes, such as protein muffins and cookies. I use Juggernaut® HP crimson punch OR original Juggernaut® crimson punch, pre-workout (I switch it up!) and Infinite Force® during my workout. During my competition prep, I wish I would have taken Infinite Force®, but I didn’t know how much it would have helped me with energy and recovery; now, it’s arguably my favorite product. During that time, I used Juggernaut®

During this time is when I began to notice the most changes in my body. Now that the Olympia is over, I can confidently say that 2012 Juggernaut nation is definitely NOT over. We have all made new lifelong friends, who will continue to support each other in our goals, and many of us already have plans to meet in the future and continue our friendships! Since this has been such an amazing opportunity, and when I believe in something, I believe in it passionately, I really want to spread the word about the company and their products. All I can say to the Arnold competitors is that I KNOW it is tough and time- consuming, but the intrinsic reward and moral support within the community is every last bit as valuable as the actual prize. Check your motivation, and continue to support each other. For many, like myself, they are not in a fitness- friendly environment, and that is the only form of support towards their goals that they will receive. Keep LOGGING because that is the biggest part of your score! And DON’T FORGET YOUR “AFTER” picture!

I first joined with wanting to set clear goals

for myself. I wanted a virtual accountability

partner. There were times when I just didn’t

feel like hitting the weights or getting out

there and running. I thought if I don’t do this,

what am I going to write in my log? Just that

by itself was enough motivation to get out

there and do the best I could do.

When I lost the first challenge I contemplated

long and hard about joining the Olympia

challenge. Do I want to dedicate countless

hours again? Then I had an epiphany. I lost

the first contest because I lost sight of what

I wanted in the first place. My once clear

fitness goals had changed into, “I want the

prize.” I Joined the Olympia Challenge with

the same clear obtainable fitness goals, and

this time, I stuck to them.

The hardest part of the challenge was the

competitor’s logs. I went through most of

them actually reading them and wanted to

put in worthwhile comments that the reader

could take away and possibly apply. Words

of encouragement should be more thought

out than, “You can do it Juggernaut!” or the,

“Only easy day was yesterday, Juggernaut!”

I didn’t know what to expect from Vegas. To tell

you the truth, I thought Infinite Labs® would just

give us the VIP tickets, tell us where the local

restaurants were and tell us to have fun. I was

not expecting Joe to escort us to the Olympia

and give us his take on what the judges are

looking for, eating dinner and lunch with us, and

hanging out with the president of Infinite Labs®

after the Olympia and the CEO of the company

to personally chat with each of the winners.

The VIP floor seats that were provided just for

Joe and the Juggernaut winners impressed

me. When the rest of the staff goes up to the

general admission seating area to watch the

show, that says something.

If I could do all of this again I would definitely do

it in a heartbeat. The clear goals, support and

accountability that this Juggernaut community

provides is priceless. I also love being around

like-minded people that understand why I am

eating a chicken breast for the 10th time in a

row for lunch.

One of the things I learned from this journey was

all of the nutrition knowledge that I gained from

fellow juggernauts. I thought I understood carb

cycling, carb reloading, glucose, insulin spikes,

etc, but now I have a greater understanding of

the crazy world of nutrition.

Juggernaut HP® through and through has

helped me through this competition. The

incredible amount of jitter-free energy given in

one little scoop has pushed me to run faster,

and push more weights. It’s also saved me a

ton of money not having to buy 2 to 3 energy

drinks a day.

My goal after the IAJ contest now is to obtain a

physique worthy enough of competing. To look

helped me would be the ultimate goal and

accomplishment.

Watching the inspirational icons of the sport on

stage made me think about my own routines.

I went a little overboard with my cardio and

undercut my calories to the point where I

believe I lost a bit of mass. With revamped

workout routines and a better nutrition plan, I

believe I have a solid plan now.

Arnold Juggernauts, it is rough going on to

the blogs day and night. Logging about your

workout and your day in general and then,

going on your fellow competitors logs to

give them some encouraging words, thinking

is anybody at Infinite Labs® even reading my

logs? Well, ALL of them are. Keep doing

what you are doing: working out to create

a better you. That is the number one prize.

Your hard work will eventually get recognized

by others; it took me two times!

I just purchased the Infinite Labs® Men’s

Ms. Jan Dy showed exceptional dedication and determination during the I am Juggernaut Challenge this year, earning her position as one of our five winners who attended the Olympia as a part of Team Infinite. We asked Jan a few questions about her exciting adventures in Vegas, her experience using our products, as well as her overall experience with Infinite Labs®.

What made you join the IAJ challenge?

Infinite Representative Hope Smallwonder asked me to join the IAJ challenge, and I was curious about what it was. When Hope said that she wouldn’t have told me about the challenge if she didn’t think I had enough motivation and determination to complete the challenge, I signed up. Can’t disappoint Hope!

What was the hardest part of the Challenge for you?

Keeping the daily logs into my already-busy life was probably the most challenging part. As a full-time student who’s working full-time as a web developer and training for a figure competition, I didn’t have much room for my

logs. However, I managed to turn my logs into my motivation to train hard and stay right on course for my diet. I ended up having a lot of fun stopping by other Juggernaut’s logs and figuring out how to get others to stop by my log too.

What did you think of your experience in Vegas?

It was definitely a memorable experience. There was so much to do, so much to see, and many people to meet in only 4 days! I had fun at the booth, working alongside with the pros, Infinite Labs® crew, and my fellow Juggernauts. It was great to meet the Olympians, sitting in the VIP seating, going to the gala, meeting my idols, making new friends, and being in a world that feels like “home”. I mean, c’mon! Where would you find people dressed in their gym clothes hanging out by the pool? Or having the fitness center at the hotel filled with individuals really pushing weights with the little equipment that’s in there? Or even have a special bodybuilding menu that is prepared with NO oil, butter, OR salt?!

If you could do it all over again, would you?

Of course!

What were some things you learned along your journey?

- Opportunities are always around the corner, and you never know when something pops up!

- When you’re having fun, time flies by so quickly that it never feels like work.

- Infinite Labs® is just like family.

- Sleep is very, very important!

- People do notice when you do something well. Just be who you are so people will love you for who you are.

The two most dangerous but effective exercises -Behind the neck pull downs and behind the neck press

BEHIND THE NECK PULL DOWNS

Behind the neck pull downs is a good exercise when performed with proper form, a good squeeze and with light

weights. This exercise is done to work the muscles of the back. However, any behind-the-neck moves—pull

down or press—can overstress the shoulder capsule. It’s not a natural position, but the behind-the-neck position

can provide a unique angle of pull on the target muscle fibers for new development. The problem with the behind

the neck pull downs lies in the external rotation: rotating your arms backwards so that your palms are facing up.

It’s basically the opposite movement to internal rotation.

To do the behind the neck pull down as normally instructed, you must externally rotate your shoulders as much

as possible. This is a very delicate position for your shoulders. This is the main reason heavy weights are not

advisable. The supporting muscles of the shoulders (known as the rotator cuff) are not in a good position to stabilize the joint and injury

to those supporting muscles can result, which can lead to further injury in the connective tissue of the joint.

Since most people do not have enough shoulder flexibility to get a straight line of pull behind the neck, they must bend their neck forward

to do this movement; this can result in neck strain on top of shoulder strain. When performing the exercise, keep your back straight, stare

fixed forward and keep your abs pulled in tight as you steadily pull the bar down behind your neck. When you pull down, do not bend your

head forward, as this can cause tension in your neck. Stop when the bar is close to the base of your neck and SQUEEZE your shoulder

blades together. Hold for a second, slowly raise the bar back up, and repeat.

BEHIND-THE-NECK PRESS

This exercise targets the deltoids, trapezius, serratus anterior and triceps. It

has been used and liked by many people over the decades, especially among

power lifting champions

Again, you must use proper form because the exercise has the same shoulder

issues associated with the behind the neck pull downs. When performing, the

arms are bent. Lift the barbell over the head to rest on the shoulders behind the

neck. The grip for this exercise is wider, with hands placed approximately 5 to 6

inches to the side of the shoulder for better stability and support. When lifting,

you need to tilt your body slightly forward so you don’t bang the bar against the

back of your head. Because of the additional strain on the rotator cuff muscles

of the shoulder joint, start with low weights to determine your strength before

moving on to heavier weights.

What made you join the IAJ challenge? I was invited to join the challenge through an invite message from Infinite Representative Jordan Foster. I went to the I Am Juggernaut website, looked over the rules, and the rest of the info. I saw that it was free to do, so I figured I would give it a shot. What was the hardest part of the Challenge for you? I think the hardest part of the challenge was worrying if I was good enough to be a winner. I was in a challenge with people who were bodybuilders, people who had competed on stage, people who could lift more, people who were faster, people who had done the challenge in the past already, etc. I had just quit smoking after 22 years so my breathing wasn’t that great. I am going on 40 with allergies to poultry, seafood, some vegetables and fruits, so with nutrition and health issues, I thought it would hold me back. So worrying if I could compete with the rest of the competitors was always on my mind! What did you think of your experience in Vegas? It was amazing. I was treated like a professional bodybuilder/athlete. I was flown out to Vegas, given a room at the Host hotel, VIP passes and tickets to everything, all expenses paid by Infinite Labs®. While I was at the expo, I got to be on the inside looking out at the booth, got to meet the other Juggernauts, meet the pros (and ask them questions and hang out with them, like I was one of them); it was like I was one of the pros. I received the utmost respect, I was welcomed with open arms by everyone. I was trained by Joe “Swat” Palumbo....the list goes on and on. It was like a DREAM, but I was awake for it. I cannot even describe how amazing the experience was. If you could do it all over again, would you? I would definitely do the challenge all over again. The inspiration and motivation you receive from fellow Juggernauts in the challenge and from

the past challenges is amazing. It makes you want to work harder and harder to reach your goals and be your best! What were some things you learned along your journey? I learned about different exercises I had never heard of (or done). I had people provide help as far as proper form. There was information and support from the representatives such as: Hope Smallwonder, Matt Tiger, Joe Palumbo, etc. There was also info on products and nutrition from everyone. I went in thinking I had some knowledge and realized that I did not know that much. I took in a lot of information that has helped me get to where I am, and to where I want to be. I learned a lot, and I still am from my fellow Juggernauts. What Infinite Labs® products would you say helped you the most to reach your goal as an IAJ champion? I think the pre-workout, Juggernaut® HP helped me the most in the challenge. I feel it helped me add more reps and more weights along the way of the challenge. Next year they are adding a Master Men’s Physique class (35+). So my future plan is to spend the rest of the following year, preparing for the October

2013 show, in which I plan on bringing a trophy home. I will continue to use Infinite Labs®

I also will be at the Arnold Expo in March 2013 hanging around the Infinite Labs® booth (drinking up all the samples like I did at the Olympia!). I plan on seeing a lot of my fellow Juggernauts there. Do you have any last words to the Juggernauts currently working towards the Arnold portion of the challenge? The best advice I can give is do your best. I didn’t know what to do on the forum at first, but I learned as time went on. I physically pushed myself harder and harder to prove that I was a Juggernaut. So all I can recommend is DO YOUR BEST, AND DON’T GET DISCOURAGED. Other Juggernauts in Vegas with me had done the challenge in the past, and came back to do it again, and this time they won. So never give up. And most importantly learn from everyone else, and enjoy your 12 weeks. What new Infinite Labs® product(s) do you plan to add into your current Infinite Labs® stack? I want to say thank you Lee for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview for us. We have a lot of different topics to talk about. With so many people following your career, let’s give the fans what they want—an all-access interview.Let me start off with some background information about you. You were interested in bodybuilding as a child and competed for the first time at the age of 13 and won. You are also known for becoming the youngest male bodybuilder ever to turn IFBB Pro at the age of 20. Lee Priest has competed over 48 times.

Yes, I started bodybuilding at age 13, winning my first 3 shows. I never got into the sport to compete, I just loved superman and He-Man and wanted to be strong and muscular. I won many other titles from age 13, 14, 15, and at age 17, I won my first Mr. Australia and placed 2nd in the AAU Mr. Universe. Additionally at age 17, my mother and I won the Couples in Australia being the first mother and son in the world to do so. With winning a national title, it made sense to turn pro, but I was told I was too young, so I won it again at age 18 and 19, but unfortunately was still too young to be considered a pro. I then planned on going to the USA to do the Niagara Falls Amateur Show. While at Gold’s gym in Venice, Jim Manion saw me and asked who I was, what I had done, etc. He then contacted Wayne Demilia who then contacted Paul Graham in Australia, and I was finally granted my pro card. I stayed in the USA for 17 years.

You’ve spent most of your life turning your body into a model of excellence. Why? What does having the world’s greatest body mean to you?

Nothing. I never did it to have the world’s best body. I did it because I love training and still do. I am no different from anyone else who goes in the gym to better themselves. So like I said, it means nothing what type of body I have. I just enjoy training.

You have “Trade Mark” Biceps. You are more famous than Arnold when it comes to those big guns. What’s the secret?

No secret. I have just always done 20 sets for biceps from day one. Back in the old days, the guys with big arms all did high volume, so why change it now? This crap you hear about your biceps getting a workout doing back and other muscle groups is a bunch of crap. Sure, they do a little, but if you want your biceps to grow you must punish them like any other body part.

You have a well-known nickname: The Blond Myth. How did this come about?

You know, I think it came about from me doing the Sergio pose.

He was The Myth, and since I did his pose and had blonde hair, I became the Blonde Myth.

Tell us a bit about your history with the IFBB organization? The good, the bad, and the ugly.

(As Lee chuckles to himself) Where to even start. I started competing with IFBB in 1989 when I turned pro in ‘93. Come ‘94, I was suspended and couldn’t do the Mr. O due to me competing in three shows prior. Qualifying for the Mr. O and still having one more show to do, I asked Joe Wieder if I could pull out and concentrate on the O. He said sure being that I would be just turning 22 doing the Mr. O, so I didn’t do the fourth show. And wouldn’t you know it Wayne Demilia told me, “I run these shows, not Joe,” so I got suspended. I liked competing in the IFBB, don’t get me wrong, I just hated all the politics that still goes on today. This includes if the judges know someone, if someone trains at certain gyms, sponsored by a certain company, etc. I always say best man on the day should win regardless if he is known or not; it isn’t hard to look up and see who is in shape and who isn’t. If a big name is out of shape, that’s too bad. Place him low, and maybe next time he will bust his ass training and look good instead of relying on his name to place. If a new guy comes from overseas and looks great then he should win; none of this, “We don’t know him,” or “He has to pay his due” crap. So I would speak out against this. Sure, I could have been quiet. I was doing well, placing well, had good contracts making over $16,000 a month, but it wasn’t about me, it was about our sport and all the athletes who busted their ass just like me paying for everything to get to a show then to be given nothing when a lot of them should have been placing well. Due to politics, however, they didn’t, and this was bullshit. I wanted all the guys to stand together because without the athletes, there is no IFBB. The athletes have all the power if they stood together; same with the sponsors of the athletes—they could take away their money from IFBB, and there would be no shows or fans. So really, the IFBB relies on scare tactics to keep athletes in line because without them, they have nothing. We just need all the guys to look out for each other, and yes, the ones at the top need to help the ones down lower because one day, you might not be on top and you will wish you would have helped out.

As for the 2008 Mr. Olympia, it was an injury that kept you from competing that year. Tell us about it and how you came back from it.

No, it wasn’t an injury. I was suspended from the IFBB for doing the PDI show. It was a 2 year suspension which went from the Mr. O 2006 to 2008. In 2009, I was going to do it but ripped my bicep tendon off the bone moving a TV. Then in 2010, I just didn’t renew my pro card and did about 5 guest posings for IFBB in Australia and New Zealand. Now, I hear I have been suspended for life, for what reason, I don’t know so Joe and I can never meet on that Masters stage.

What do you think of the current champions, in the open and in the under 212 division?

In the open, most look like crap. They’re too blocky and their fat bodies look old and sick. Back in the 90s and early 2000s, guys looked so much better and the line up and quality was so much better. The 212 class is good, however. These guys come in shape, but don’t call them giant killers as they are not competing against giants like I did. Hell, I didn’t even make top 25 giant killers of all time in history since people were told not to add me to the list. See, politics changing the sport and the history of it again, considering Flex magazine did so many stories on me, calling me “The Top Giant Killer”.

There is a lot of talk about how you would do with the current champions, open and under the 212 division.

I would hold my own as I always did, but I guess we will never know. It’s been 6 years, almost 7, since I have been onstage competing, yet I am still one of the most talked about pros around till this day and have a huge fan base from the ones who love me and hate me. It would be a promoters dream to have me in a 212 show as the hype would be fantastic and the show itself would be great, but sadly due to this life suspension I only heard about 3 weeks ago the fans will never know.

You have fans from the beginning of your profession, yet today there is a whole new generation of young fans who want Lee Priest out there and competing again, what do you have to say to them?

Hey, I would love to compete again, but sadly it’s not up to me. I have been suspended for life from IFBB, so unless the IFBB lifts that ban it will never happen. This is sad, sure, people say I am a rebel, bad boy, etc, but I see myself as Lee—someone who spoke his mind, good and bad, and you need personalities like this in this sport because sadly, it’s dying. Everyone is the same and so boring. Look back at all the characters back in the day—that’s what this sport needs, life back in it! I don’t hate IFBB. I love this sport, but I want to see it grow, see excitement, see young kids get excited again and want to be a pro bodybuilder. So what I am saying is, yes, bring me back.

Now for part two of Lee Priest, you are also a champion race car driver?

Yes, I did some circle track racing and road racing, winning a few, and then I got into drag racing through a good friend and top NHRA racer Rod Fuller, who raced Top Fuel. I went and got my NHRA license at Frank Hawley’s Racing School where I met Thomas Bayer (Tom was the instructor at school along with Jack Beckman, another top racer) and won many races racing with my team mate Thomas Bayer. He and his father, wife and brother are fantastic people. In 2005, I won Rookie of the Year, finished 3rd in the championship, and then in 2006 I won the championship. I miss racing so much to this day.

When did you start?

I started around 2001 in circle going into road racing and the end of 2004 with the dragsters.

What made you start?

I just loved racing and one day met a guy, Greg Smith; we would go watch the races at Irwindale every Saturday night. Greg and I got into the road racing where I navigated for him, and we won a few times. We then met Dan Holtz who had a racing school in Mesa Merrin. I would train with him and drive his cars. So I had a lot of good people helping me along the way.

Give us your history in race car driving; I know you have some wins you like to share.

Oh, there are too many! I listed some above, but all the others I can’t remember. There were a lot; the Silver State and Nevada Open road races where great wins.

You have come so far in this field and it really has opened many doors for you. I understand you have done some TV and movie work. You did all the bodywork for The Hulk Movie and also for the video game. Tells us what that was like?

That was great going to George Lucas’s studio and doing all the movements for the movie and then, again, a few years later for

the video game. I’ve done a few TV shows and ads since. Back in Australia, I just take things if they come along. I don’t go looking for it, but it is fun to do when it happens.

What is your interest in tattoos?

I’ve always liked them, and when I started winning races, I would get one but won too many so I stopped that idea. My first tattoo, Chris Cormier took me to a shop in Venice with Shaun Dinosaur Davies, and I got my superman ‘S’. The facial one I got in 2006 because, to me, the face is just another body part; yes, people think it is for attention; you think people didn’t stare at me the way I looked before that? Now I’ve got new ones on my chest, ribs, etc. I do it because I like it, not to impress anyone. I do it for me and my body. I do as I please. Besides, it’s not hurting anyone but me when I get them!

I have always been Lee Priest, and what you see is what you get. Now I am not saying I want to die, but if I did I would have no regrets (well, maybe one or two but that’s got to do with family and all the things I missed being away overseas for all those years doing this sport).

On a personal note, you are one of my favorite bodybuilders, and I have known you for years now and every time I meet up with you, I am amazed with your sense of humor. For the fans that have not met you in person, you are one of the funniest bodybuilders out there in this industry. Thank you for your time and I look forward to seeing you again.

You’re welcome, Joe and yes, as I said, I am me. I have silly sense of humor, sometimes dry, sometimes rude, but just know I am always just having fun; life is too short to be angry or hold grudges. Just enjoy life, be true to yourself, have people like you for you who you are. I have found if you be yourself, be truthful and help people when you can people will like you; sure, you will have some haters, but they are the jealous ones. So to all my fans, I say thank you for sticking by me all these years and know one day if the IFBB sees fit, they may let me come back on stage for you as I said I would do a comeback show for the fans. I have nothing to prove so it would be for the fans. If I won any prize money, the IFBB could give it to a charity of their choice. So really what do they have to lose?

Spring into Action

It’s a beautiful day outside, there is a nice breeze, the sun is shining and you find the fresh air so refreshing and relaxing. Why go to the stuffy, artificially lit gym to work out when you have all the tools you need for a great work out right in your backyard—Outside!

Change up your training regimen this summer, and take your training outdoors.

Be creative, enjoy the change of scene, and get results while enjoying yourself.

I want to help you not only take your training and results to the next level, but

I want to help you feel great, love the way you look and enjoy the process this

summer!

Here are my top 5 “Spring into Action” training suggestions for the summer

1/Take your cardio outdoors. Instead of your morning cardio on the boring

stationary bike or treadmill, take your cardio around the neighborhood, to the

park or run the beach. Give yourself distance goals. This will help you push

yourself to reach a certain distance rather than reaching the count down on a

cardio machine.

2/Get the kids involved. Incorporate both family time and your workout.

Organize track and field drills with the little ones and their friends. Relay races,

sprints, kickball games, etc. By doing this you are able to still work on YOUR

cardio and endurance training, as well as passing down a good habit to a

generation that is driven by video games and computers.

3/Hit the bike trail. Biking is great cardio. It also comes with many benefits in

shaping and toning your lower body and core.

4/Go for some laps. Swimming is a great full body workout that is easy on

the joints and tendons.

5/Plyos! Use the back patio, open up some space in the garage, and get

your plyometrics training kicked into high gear. Jump squats, lunges and high

jumps can all be done outside or in a limited space. Incorporate everyday furniture

like a patio chair for pushups and dips or a cinder block for step ups.

Now that you have the tools to take your training outdoors, here are a few of the benefits:

I. VOLUME

Almost no one trains with enough sets. Every body part must be

beaten into senseless submission by set after relentless set, until

the last synapse sputters and dies. You’ll never reach that point if

you’ve been sold that bill of goods called overtraining. There’s no

such thing. Overtraining was invented by wimps to camouflage their

inability to train hard. They say, “Because it’s a small muscle group,

never do more than nine sets.” To me, that’s not training your biceps.

Even with 20 sets, you’re not shocking them, only training them. A

legitimate advanced shock workout not only constitutes at least 20

sets, but all of them must be working sets, each one to failure. Don’t

count any warm-up sets, regardless of the pump you get.

II. SUPERSETS

No exercise technique activates more muscle fibers or pumps

more blood into the muscle group than supersets; since no body

part is more responsive to this type of concentrated attack than our

biceps, I incorporate supersets into every biceps workout. Doing

so, however, carries with it a great responsibility: Supersets are a

powerful weapon and must not be used indiscriminately. They have

their time and place, so heed the following caveats.

Do not use supersets for every biceps exercise. Use them for the last

full working sets in your workout. Barbell curls should not be used for

supersets. As a compound movement, they exact too much energy

and do not activate enough fibers to produce the proper superset

burn, which is more of a searing than an exploding sensation. Do

not superset biceps exercises with each other. The purpose of

supersets is to beat a body part into submission by destroying the

most remote muscle fibers, so begin each set with as much energy

reserve as you can muster. You need maximum strength to reach

maximum fatigue. The ideal body part superset companion I’ve found

for preserving biceps energy is triceps. The two are almost equal

in strength, yet directly antagonistic, allowing each other plenty of

time for recovery while waiting their turn. Using supersets for only

the last heavy exercise in my biceps workout provides a transition

into my triceps workout. To superset a biceps exercise with a triceps

exercise, I try to combine movements of equivalent effort, such as

dumbbell preacher curls with one-arm dumbbell extensions or seated

alternate dumbbell curls with standing French curls. The only biceps

exercises that should be superset are dumbbell curls, preacher

curls, seated barbell curls and cable curls. Freestanding barbell curls

are too heavy, concentration curls are too light and machines are too

isolated to produce a comprehensive burn.

III. FAILURE

Pyramid your sets, but take each one to failure, regardless of the

amount of weight you’re using or the reps you’re getting. Only by

failure can you ensure that the fundamental principle of universal

destruction is being satisfied.

IV. LOW REPS

Count only those sets for which you reach failure in the six- to eight-

rep range. If you do more than eight reps, you are depleting the

rest of your body aerobically before your biceps are fully fatigued

anaerobically; if you cannot reach six reps, it’s a good indication that

your biceps muscles are not being fatigued before ancillary muscles

take over the movement.

V. DISORDER

If we assume that maximum strength should be allocated to the

heaviest exercise, it then follows that every workout should begin

with barbell curls. Your body, however, has the ability to adapt to any

movement with such subtlety that you will be unaware that ancillary

muscles have wrested some of the work from your biceps. By starting

with a different exercise each time, those ancillary muscles do not

have a chance to adapt and your biceps muscles are forced to do all

of the work. If you start, for example, with preacher curls or alternate

dumbbell curls instead of barbell curls, you won’t be using as much

weight, but the exercise will be more effective, because your biceps

will have completed the task before the rest of your body figures out

how to help.

Everybody talks about shocking biceps into new growth, but I’ll

place odds that 99 out of 100 guys have no idea what it really

takes. They parrot popular theories about what constitutes a biceps

shock but, no matt r how many criteria they list, it won’t be enough.

Biceps are the most stubborn bodypart of your physique. Overlook

just one of the requirements for a potent shock, and your biceps

will lie there as if you never touched them.

I’ve built my career on my own biceps research: experimenting with

every conceivable training technique and charting and comparing

results in an effort to determine, conclusively, what best makes

biceps grow. Now I know, but I’m sorry to inform you that it’s not

as simple as I’d hoped. I can’t boil it down to anything less than 10

commandments of biceps training. To integrate all of them takes

concentration, but if you have the fortitude to bear with me on this,

you will ascend to the ranks of those blessed with the best biceps

they are capable of attaining.

VI. BICEPS WITH TRICEPS

Do not train biceps with any other body part except triceps. This advice

is similar to the caveat in the second commandment against supersetting

biceps exercises with each other, except that here it’s in the context

of the entire body. If you train chest with biceps, as many bodybuilders

do, your chest workout depletes energy from your biceps workout, so

even though you think you’re giving your biceps 100%, they’re getting

only 80%. You’ll realize a better shock if you train only one body part a

day; in this case, arms. The first exercise can then be hit with full power,

and you’ll still have enough energy to control your movements on the

remainder without cheating.

VII. DUMBBELL CURLS

What qualifies dumbbell curls as ideal for a biceps shock is that they are

usually alternated, allowing each arm more recuperation time, not only

between reps but between supersets as well. Consequently, dumbbells

enable you to handle poundage’s as heavy or nearly as heavy as with

straight sets. Concentration curls are an exception — they’re too isolated

and light to be effective as a mass builder or as a superset component

for a shock. I employ them solely as a warm-up, but add something extra:

a slow supination and peak contraction with every rep, which generates

such an intense pump that I often keep it going with five pyramided sets

of six to eight, the same as for my other biceps exercises. Effectively, it’s

a full-blown working exercise, but I still don’t count it.

VIII. PREACHER CURLS

Always include preacher curls of some sort in every biceps workout.

A preacher bench provides a combination of power and isolation that

cannot be equaled by any other position. With the elbow braced, it’s a

power exercise but, since the shoulders are also braced, it’s an isolation

exercise. I also use it at two different angles. With the pad at an incline,

I can pull back with my body to apply more leverage power. With the pad

vertical (in the “spider” position), so that my arms are straight downward,

my body ballast is neutralized and I’m forced to use more isolation.

Preacher curls should be performed with one arm with a dumbbell, as well

as with two arms with a barbell or cambered bar. A dumbbell allows you

to supinate or hammer the movement, so you can target specific areas

of your biceps. A bar fixes your hands in a position that keeps all of the

stress in the belly of the biceps, so you cannot rotate away from the burn

as it develops.

IX. BARBELL CURLS

Just because I advised you earlier to never use barbell curls for supersets

doesn’t mean you should never use them at all. Quite the contrary, no

biceps mass-building program should be without them, or cambered-bar

curls, if you prefer. Every muscle-group workout needs at least one free-

weight compound exercise to force all of the muscles in the group to

exert maximum strength in a combined effort.

In no other way can maximum mass be distributed throughout the body

part and its ancillaries. Hardly a biceps workout passes that I don’t include

five straight sets of barbell curls, the first set for eight reps to failure

and the last set for six reps to failure, every one as heavy as possible

but not wasted. This is the prototypical size builder, but I never cheat

with it. My biceps do all the work. In contrast, I often finish a biceps

workout with partial-rep barbell curls at about 70% of my maximum

barbell curl poundage. This is a highly unorthodox movement, but it

enables me to leave the gym with my biceps feeling as though Cujo

got hold of them. To restrict my partial reps to a small arc, I sit on a

bench and I make sure never to lower the bar so far that it touches my

thighs. I close my eyes, start pumping and don’t stop until I hear my

own death rattles.

X. CONTROL

To get the most out of any biceps curl, keep the movement tight during

the extension, slowing the pace the lower you go. Do not extend all

the way: If you straighten your arm under stress, you increase the risk

of snapping your biceps or developing tendinitis in your elbow. Put

your mind into your biceps during the contraction, then get a good

peaking squeeze at the top. By all means, forget about the poundage

you’re using.

If it feels good, try more, but if it doesn’t feel good, try progressively

lighter weights, until you find one that gives you the best pump. Don’t

wait for an injury to teach you to grow up and do it right. Too many

bodybuilders worry about others watching the weight they’re using.

I’m sure many people have said, “Look, there’s Lee. He acts as if he’s

in pain, but the weights he’s using are light.” I couldn’t care less. I’m

not there to impress anyone; I’m there to train for myself.

Training biceps is important for bodybuilding, but equally important for combat athletes. Let’s discuss the importance of biceps in fighting and why training them is necessary.

Here is a routine you can try to help build bicep power:

1. Pull Ups –With your palms facing you, begin with your arms fully straight, and then pull yourself up until your chin is at the height of the bar.

> Perform 3 sets until muscle failure.

Throwing a punch involves utilizing every muscle in

your body, whether you believe it or not! But in this

article, we are discussing the role your biceps play.

Here are some key questions to think about. Make a

fist; does your bicep contract? Raise your arms up to

fight; do you keep them straight or are your elbows

slightly bent? Fighting relaxed is key, but maintaining

a slight contraction will prepare your neuro-muscular

system to be able to respond when the brain sends

the message to smash your opponent. How about

throwing an uppercut; is your arm straight or elbow

bent? Your body weight and speed is key behind

the punch, but making sure your arm stays flexed

requires strong biceps and forearms, or the punch

will lose its transfer of power as you land your strike.

Biceps are so important in protecting yourself during

a fight when blocking punches or kicks. Having

strong arms is essential when it comes to fighting,

whether it’s a 10 round fight, or 3 five-minute rounds.

Legendary undefeated Pro Boxer Rocky Marciano

knew the importance of arms. He made it a point to

hit his opponents in the arms to break them down,

before delivering that final head strike. In MMA,

strong biceps are important when executing a rear

naked choke or guillotine choke. Many fighters lose

stamina or strength in their arms when trying to finish

a submission. Don’t be one of them!

This workout will hit the different muscle fiber types, attack from various angles and prevent injury. Try this workout once or twice a week in addition to your other training and experience the difference in your performance!

3. Standing Rope Cable Curls- Take a split rope, and attach it to a low cable. Grab the ropes with a “false grip”, meaning the thumb is on the same side as your fingers. Keep your elbows tucked into your side, and explosively curl your arms up. Slowly lower your arms back down.

> Perform 3 sets of 20-25 reps.

2. Standing Dumbbell Curls- Begin with your arms down at your side holding the dumbbells. Begin to curl your arm up, and in the top position turn your pinky out to get the full action of bicep, which is elbow flexion and supination.

> Perform 3 sets of 8-10 tough reps.

Tip- Slowly lower the weight to take full advantage of the negative movement and powerfully raise the weight up.

A rear naked choke is an easy but effective technique to apply.

STEP 1

Slip to the outside of their punch.

STEP 2

After you slip the punch, go over the top of their shoulder and

wrap your arm round their neck.

STEP 3

With your body pressed close to your opponent thrust your

hips forward forcing their hips forward.

STEP 4

Drag your opponent back and down with their neck takes them

off their feet.

STEP 5

Move backwards, keeping your back straight and putting them

down, until they’re on their backside and apply the choke. Stay

close to your opponent to stop them from turning into you and

while your forearm is pulling up towards their neck.

STEP 6

Push their head forwards and down with your other arm and

chest. Your opponent will soon pass out or tap out.
