Doing your Part

By Karl Peschel

(I wrote this a few years ago, but it’s certainly pertinent this year too)

Focus Camera Club has been around for over30 years. And during that time hundreds of people have

stepped up and volunteered their time, expertise, and talents to run the club.

Now is the time of the year where the club is seeking the Executive Board and Committee chairs to run the club in 2019. But, there are many other positions available.

There are many roles necessary for an effcient and active club. From leadership and decision making,

coordination of the Programs and Competitions, organizing outside events (wish there were more of

those), organizing and increasing membership, to seemingly mundane tasks like making sure snacks are

available for meetings.

There are MANY jobs, both big and small, but all equally important to the club running smoothly.

Where can YOU lend a hand?

In the last few years we have had a decent infux of new members. So, this is for you new folks. Where

can YOU lend a hand in the monthly operations of the club? Let someone on the Exec board know of

your interest to present a Program, or be a committee member, or lead a photo excursion, or anything

else you have a talent for to help move the club forward.

(The Special Projects and Education positions have been vacant for 4 or more years. Is that something

you can see yourself doing? Step up and do your part.)

New people bring with them new ideas. Let your new ideas help guide the club for the future. Part of the

reason the club has survived for 30 years is change – progress – and not doing the same things since its

inception (though some would say the last few years we’ve become “stagnant”).

What’s that saying about “It Takes a Village…?”

Okay, admittedly we are not raising a child. But the club IS raising the photographic skills of its members.

The mission statement says it, and the last bit “...cooperative efforts and fellowship” should stick in ev-

eryone’s mind. Working together, helping each other, supporting the club, we can achieve the goal.

The 2018 Focus Execs and Committee members deserve a pat on the back

When you see any of these folks at the Annual Dinner, or at any club meeting, please take a moment to

Thank them for helping to run the club. And don’t neglect the others who run digital projections, or

coordinate snacks for meetings, or anything else. Without them the club would fall apart…

Program & Competition Meetings

Program Schedule Competition Schedule

11/09/18 Program – Process & Feedback by Mark Osler

11/28/18 Subject – Doors and Doorknobs

12/?/18 Annual Dinner (date TBA)

November 9 Program with Mark Osler

Great pictures are rarely the result of pointing your camera at a subject, making one picture, then mov-ing on. Portfolio and presentation-worthy photographs are most often the result of a process of explo-ration and discovery.

As such, the real value is not the review and critique of a photographer’s “winners,” but of the process they rely on to generate those winners. If you can improve your process you can increase the number of winners you produce in any given situation.

The core of this program will be looking at members’ COMPLETE TAKES (no editing or post-processing) from a situation they photographed. That could be a trip to the zoo or botanic gardens, a family event or vacation, an excursion for a given purpose, or any collection of pictures from one situation or event.

This Month's Competition is Doors and Doorknobs

A very specifc subject this month!! Accept the challenge and go wander around town.

“Photos of any kind of doors or doorknobs, from normal to quirky. The doors or doorknobs must be the primary subject of the photo. If humans or animals are included, they must not be prominent.”

Judge will be John Kiefer

If you need the Competition Entry forms or the template for the stick-on labels, you can get both from the Focus website on the Competition Rules page.

Pleased to Meet You: Portraits from Places Near & Far by Ron Cooper

Currently on view at Gallery MFC in Denver through November 17, 2018.

We're delighted to introduce Ron Cooper, CPAC's newest Featured Member. Ron began exploring photography ten years ago after retiring early from a corporate career. Today, he travels extensively in pursuit of images that reflect local cultures and people. Read his full story here at the CPAC website.

Frame #37

A collection of extra tidbits I've discovered during the past few weeks.

— Dis you know a Beer Helmet is an essential piece of lighting gear? This guy knows the value.

— Google’s attempt at a social network – Google+ - will be shut down. Many photographers loved the platform and will need to mi-grate to Instagram or Facebook.

— Go raid the kids’ toybox (or grab your Matchbox or Hot Wheels collection from the attic) and brush up your Photoshop skills. Have some fun photographing toy cars.

— Do you store photos on Flickr? If so, I’m sure you’re aware of the new 1000 image limit. Is this just a money grab to push people to the paid Pro level service? Opinions vary.

A lot of my work has doors in it, or the suggestion of doors. We all open the same door many times over and over and each time we open it new light comes in, different air, a fresh experience, an old experience slips out and gets loose in the room.

– Stephanie Torbert
