Introduction

This brochure will introduce you to the DUT Racing team and the opportunities that the DUT Racing team offers to your company.

Our team participates on behalf of the TU Delft (Delft University of Technology) in the Formula Student competition; the oldest and largest student engineering competition with more than 500 student teams participating.

The DUT Racing team has achieved great success in previous years. In 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 the team has won first overall place at the world championship in Germany. Combined with the win of several other competitions in the United Kingdom this has resulted in a leading position on the world ranking list.

Our goal is to maintain this high level of performance and education with your support.

Formula Student Competition

The Formula Student competition is an international design competition in which over 500 teams participate all over the world. Students design, build, test and race their Formula-style racecar.

The target of the competition is to improve the engineering skills of the students by experiencing teamwork, time and project management along with manufacturing, construction and economical aspects. This is achieved by judging the car on both static and dynamic aspects.

The teams participate on racetracks like Silverstone, Hockenheim, the Fuji Speedway and many more racetracks all over the world. The DUT Racing team takes part in at least two of the Formula Student competitions.

Static Events

The events have a static part at which the teams are judged on their design, business presentation and cost analysis. This challenges the students to think about more than just building the fastest car on track.

The students have to be able to justify every choice they made towards cost and design. As well as being able to sell the whole concept in a business presentation. The judges for these static events are mainly professionals from the automotive industry.

Dynamic Events

At the second part of the event the cars are judged on their dynamic performance in: acceleration, skid pad, autocross, endurance and energy efficiency. The dynamic parts of the events are to prove good driving qualities as acceleration, braking and handling.

Since 2010, there is an electric class in the competition, which is rapidly developing into a highly competitive class. Due to the novelty of this class students are forced to start with a blank sheet of paper, hence a wide range of innovative concepts can be found in this class.

Since 2012 the combustion and the electric class compete directly against each other at Silverstone. Last year the electric DUT12 had to allow one combustion racecar in front. Will the electric cars of this year be able to prove that electric driving really is the next step to success?

About DUT Racing

DUT Racing is the oldest and largest student project of the TU Delft, steadily growing since 2000. The team has always operated independently, passing on the obtained knowledge from year to year.

The more than 70 team members have very different backgrounds regarding nationality, age and field of study. Various studies are involved, for example: Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, Technology, Policy & Management and Applied Physics.

This large number of people requires a good team structure. Therefore DUT Racing has a management team to organize all its members and to make sure the car is finished and tested in time. Additionally, the team has a number of committees responsible for all sorts of important issues such as passing on knowledge, recruitment, organizing events and maintaining old cars.

DUT01 2001 was the first year DUT Racing took part in the Formula Student competition. The DUT01 was a heavy car with a four cylinder engine. Unlike many other teams the DUT01 was already reliable and safe enough to enter the dynamic events.

DUT03 In 2003, the team chose for a different approach. They rethought the concept with the various design choices and came with a new one, which became known as: “the Delft concept”. The Delft concept stands for a very lightweight car with a small one cylinder engine. The application of this concept led to winning the Design Judging event for the first time.

DUT10

In 2010, the team was able to reduce the weight significantly without losing reliability. It was the year in which the car was already able to drive the first meters on the 16th of May. The low weight combined with the high reliability ensured that the DUT10 won the Formula Student Germany overall first place by far!

DUT12

The DUT12 is the second electric race car of the DUT Racing team. It is a four wheel driven car with 144 horsepower at its disposal and weighing in at only 148kg as the lightest in its field. It is the first DUT car making use of a fully self developed torque vectoring and traction control system.

The DUT12 was both the best performing electric car at Formula Student Silverstone and won the Formula Student Electric Competition at Hockenheim. Furthermore, the team won the Engineering Design event at both competitions, proving their concept.

DUT11

2011 was the first year that DUT Racing took part in the Formula Student Electric competition. The DUT11 team translated the Delft concept of the combustion car to a lightweight electric Formula Student car. The DUT11 won both Formula Student United Kingdom and Formula Student Germany, this was never achieved before in the history of DUT Racing.

A New Challenge

In a world where society asks more and more from engineers and climate changes are a big issue, engineers have to come up with new innovations faster than ever before. Not only do they have to deal with the available materials in a responsible way, but they also need to search for alternative solutions.

Last two years, we took up the challenge taking our lightweight concept to the electric racing class and implementing full torque vectoring with four-wheel-drive. This year, we search to further innovate by researching the aerodynamics of the car.

This means reducing drag as well as researching the possibility of adding downforce. Downforce is beneficial for the average cornering speed, but most aerodynamic devices like wings negatively influence the total amount of drag.

This brings up many new challenges for this year. Problems which can only be tackled with your help!

DUT Racing: Nursery for Talented Engineers

The goal of the Formula Student events is to prepare the students for their professional career. Since the DUT Racing team exists for twelve years now there are many examples of team members who have used their Formula Student experiences as a springboard for their later careers.

Jeroen Klein Geltink for instance, who has been part of the DUT08 and DUT09 team and is now working for the Lotus Renault Formula 1 team. In the formula student Germany programme magazine, he said the following about how Formula Student helped him prepare for his current job: “The work in a Formula Student team makes everybody a better engineer. This way, participants learn about the engineering world outside of the university. In addition, it is a good way to train your soft skills.”

And not only in the Formula 1 you can find formal DUT Racing engineers. DUT Racing engineers are now employed in companies all over the world, like Shell, Tesla, Fokker, SKF, Volkswagen, McKinsey and many others. DUT Racing engineers are very entrepreneurial minded as well. Good examples are the Holland Containers Innovations (foldable container) and Ephicas (trailer SideWings saving 5% of fuel; acquired by WABCO in Sept 2012) both founded by formal DUT Racing engineers.

With your support students can prepare themselves for their professional career and perhaps, one day, will work for your company!

Supporting the dut racing team

The DUT Racing team is one of the top teams in the oldest and largest engineering competition, the Formula Student competition. Supporting our team gives your company a lot of opportunities!

Being associated with a renowned scientific organization, the Delft University of Technology, enthusiastic students and an exciting engineering project creates a professional and dynamic image for your company.

A sponsor agreement provides your company with an excellent chance to present itself as an appealing and interesting employer. This image results in a high return of investment for our partners.

Thomas Lieber (Volkswagen AG) said the following about this; ‘The Formula Student competition enables students to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience and to gain key qualifications that are crucial for a successful career in our company.’[1]

Supporting our project enables your company to reach the engineers directly involved in the project, as well as a whole network behind them. The DUT Racing team is active on social media like facebook and twitter and distributes its own monthly newsletter.

In summary, cooperation with the team offers your company numerous possibilities. You can find the different sponsor possibilities on the next page. Packages can be completely customized to meet your company’s desires.
