Web interfaces for data entry and exploration Information and Data Centre Program Why access your data in a browser? Web-based systems provide an familiar and effective interface for the manipulation of data. Web-based data entry forms are built on the security and integrity of an underlying database management system, with users requiring only a web browser to access and interact with the data. Data entry and reporting can be performed simultaneously from multiple networked computers or smart phones. Using current web standards and technologies allows for applications to be developed that rival the usability of desktop applications. Modern tools allow rapid and responsive development, enabling the application to be easily adapted as project requirements change. What are the advantages? Built on a relational database (see CMAR IDC Fact Sheet: Databases) A familiar environment for the project team means minimal training The application does not need to be deployed on individual machines, and a single “point-of- truth” exists for the latest version Multiple/simultaneous user access is supported, both for data entry and querying Rapid feedback and analysis of results resulting from using a single, stable data source Supports data sharing among project participants and collaborators How can the CMAR IDC Program help you? Why access your data in a browser?

Web-based systems provide an familiar and effective interface for the manipulation of data. Web-based data entry forms are built on the security and integrity of an underlying database management system, with users requiring only a web browser to access and interact with the data. Data entry and reporting can be performed simultaneously from multiple networked computers or smart phones.

Using current web standards and technologies allows for applications to be developed that rival the usability of desktop applications. Modern tools allow rapid and responsive development, enabling the application to be easily adapted as project requirements change.

What are the advantages?

◆ Built on a relational database (see CMAR IDC Fact Sheet: Databases)

◆ A familiar environment for the project team means minimal training

◆ The application does not need to be deployed on individual machines, and a single “point-of-truth” exists for the latest version

◆ Multiple/simultaneous user access is supported, both for data entry and querying

◆ Rapid feedback and analysis of results resulting from using a single, stable data source

◆ Supports data sharing among project participants and collaborators

How can the CMAR IDC Program help you?

The IDC can assist projects with the development of web based interfaces, which allow for viewing and interacting with databases in a variety of ways.

We have expertise in the full data life cycle from initial database design through to web application development and provision of data for analysis. Examples of web screenshots from recently developed APEX applications for CMAR project use are shown overleaf.

Oracle Application Express

◆ Full integration with the CMAR Oracle Database systems

◆ A fully supported, no-cost development environment

◆ Can be integrated with other networked services, including:

- Nexus authentication

- Email notification

- Google mapping

- External data repositories (OpenDAP, etc.).

Oracle Application Express (APEX) – example software used in the CMAR Data Centre for rapid web-enabled application development
