The academic year has come to an end for
most of us in academia.
Let me take this opportunity to wish our new
scholarship holders the very best in the com-
mencement of their academic year this coming
winter semester 2016/17.
I am also delighted to say that, with the contin-
uance of the DAAD-Government of Ghana
scholarship programme for PhD training in
Germany, there are 14 scholarship holders
who are undertaking language courses in Ger-
many at the moment and will commence with
their academic work this coming winter semes-
ter.
We are always happy to help you meet your
academic goals especially with respect to
exchange with the German higher education

many
Are you interested in pursuing your first de-
gree in Germany after completing secondary
school in Ghana?

This preparatory programme is important for

PhD proposal writing workshop
The PhD proposal writing workshop is a plat-
form especially made for prospective PhD
candidates to fine-tune their research pro-
posals for their research stays in Germany.
This year, it will be a two-day event. Partici-
pants at the workshop will be coached by
seasoned researchers and other DAAD and
Germany alumni who have successfully com-
pleted their research stays in Germany.
This workshop also introduces participants to
the vast research landscape of Germany,
available funding opportunities as well as
‘how to find a research supervisor’.
Interested participants who have attained a
masters degree are invited to attend. Prior
registration is mandatory.

The exhibition and conference will feature stakeholders
and professionals from fields of energy generation,
transmission and distribution, energy efficiency and
electrical engineering, environmental technology, waste
recycling as well as waste and sewage treatment.

Post Doc Researchers Networking Tour
We would like to draw your attention to an initiative of
the German Academic Exchange service (DAAD). This
year, DAAD offers a “Postdoctoral Researchers’ Net-
working Tour” for postdocs from molecular bioscience
who are interested in job opportunities in Germany
(academic and non-academic).
The funding includes:
a practice oriented and diverse programme to suit
the requirements of the participants
coverage of programme related costs in Germany
(accommodation, domestic travel, most meals)
a lump sum travel allowance if such costs are not
borne by a third party. This will also be provided if
the stay is extended by up to five working days in
order to allow for additional professional networ-
king.
The dates are: July 15 2016 (deadline for application)
and September 25 to October 1 (Tour).

Research Stay for Academics
The aim of this particular programme is to support short-
term research stays and thus promote the exchange of
experience and networking amongst colleagues.
University teachers and established academics and sci-
entists who have usually completed a doctoral degree
and work at a university or research institute in their ho-
me country can apply.
One applies for research stays at state or state-
recognised institutions of higher education or non-
university research institutes in Germany . A research
stay can also take place at several host institutions.
The stay is usually for a period of one to three months.
Visits to conferences and congresses are not funded.

DAAD Research Grants
Bi-nationally supervised doctoral degree
programmes
This grant is for PhD candidates pursuing their doc-
toral programmes in their home country to undertake
a research phase at a state or state-recognised insti-
tution of higher education or a non-university re-
search institute in Germany as part of a doctoral pro-
gramme. Their research proposal must be coordinat-
ed with the academic advisers at the home university
and in Germany.
Doctoral training programme in Germany
This grant is for PhD candidates pursuing their entire
doctoral programme at a state or state-recognised
institution of higher education or a non-university re-
search institute in Germany. This grant is offered for
individual projects under the supervision of a univer-
sity teacher or academic adviser
or for participation in a structured doctoral study pro-
gramme in Germany.
One-year grants
This grant is purposely for a research project or
course of continuing education at a state or state-
recognised institution of higher education in Germany
or a non-university research institute, which is being
carried out in coordination with an academic adviser
in Germany for a period of 7 months to usually 10
months; the length of the grant is decided by a selec-
tion committee and depends on the project in ques-
tion and the applicant's work schedule.
Short-term grant This grant is purposely for a research project or
course of continuing education at a state or state-
recognised institution of higher education or a non-
university research institute in Germany, which is be-
ing carried out in coordination with an academic ad-
viser in Germany for a period of one month to a maxi-
mum of six months; the length of the grant is decided
by a selection committee and depends on the project
in question and the applicant's work schedule.

DAAD-Government of Ghana scholarship programme for PhD training
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in
collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the
Scholarship Secretariat invite applications from Gha-
naians especially from science and engineering back-
ground to apply for the above mentioned scholarship
programme tenable in Germany.
Eligibility:
Must be a Ghanaian citizen resident in Ghana
Must be a teaching staff of public tertiary institution
Must hold a master’s degree equivalent to B+
grade or above
Be a first degree holder with 2nd class upper or
above
Should have a national service certificate
At the time of application, generally not more than
six (6) years should have passed since graduation
from last degree
Should not be more than 45 years
Should be willing to learn German
Interested applicants should submit a CV, a research
proposal and a confirmation of supervision by a Ger-
man supervisor (if available) to:

Study in Germany Webinars with 3 Ger-man higher education institutions
The maiden Study-in-Germany-Webinar sessions
with 3 German higher education institutions, namely
International School of Management, the Frankfurt
School of Finance and the Institute for International
Communication were held on the 7th of June, 2016.
This was a hybrid session with a group of prospective
students participating at the Best Western Hotel, Ac-
cra and other interested participating online through
the Web tool.
University representatives had the opportunity to in-
teract live with prospective students.

Handing over of laboratory Equipment to the School of Pharmacy, University of Ghana
The deputy head of mission in the person of Mr. Bernhard
Abels on the 9th of June, 2016, presented a High Perfor-
mance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) laboratory instru-
ment to the School of Pharmacy, University of Ghana.
Funds for the acquisition of the equipment was made pos-
sible through the Material Resources Programme of the
Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Develop-
ment (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenar-
beit und Entwicklung – BMZ). The Materials Resources
Programme is managed by the German Academic
Exchange Service (DAAD). This programme aims to sup-
port projects in developing countries in the field of
teaching, research, equipment and development and to
improve services at institutions of higher education and
comparable institutions in developing countries.
As a rule, DAAD alumni, working in institutions of higher
learning in developing countries are eligible to apply for
funds through the programme to support teaching and re-
search in their home university.
Dr. Emelia Oppong-Bekoe, a DAAD alumna and a lecturer
at the School of Pharmacy, applied to the programme for
the supply of the equipment to be used for teaching and
research at the School of Pharmacy.
