International Economics Curriculum 4 Courses Microeconomics & Macroeconomics (intermediate—not principles) International Trade Theory & International Monetary Theory Students who have previously taken one more of the above courses and have received a B- or

better, may sit for the waiver exam(s); if they pass, they enroll in alternate courses during the academic year—opening more room to specialize

Passing the HNC courses of International Trade Theory and Policy and/or International Monetary and Policy will allow students to sit for the waiver exam(s)

Students may also take Pre-Term (Microeconomics); if they pass, they enroll in an alternate econ course during the academic year—opening more room to specialize

At a minimum, students must complete at least 4 economics courses at SAIS during the fall, spring or summer terms

Exception: If students pass one of the 4 required econ courses in either Pre-Term or through a waiver exam, they can use ONE Level 2 Econ course taken at the HNC to reduce the econ requirements to only 3 courses – NO credit is given for the Level 2 Econ course(s); even though the HNC Level 2 Econ courses of International Trade Theory and Policy and International Monetary and Policy allow students to sit for the waiver exam(s), they are NOT eligible for the exception to reduce the econ requirements to 3

Concentrations: Regions of the World

African Studies (AFR); Canadian Studies (CAN), China Studies (CH), Japan Studies (JA), Korea Studies (KO), South Asia Studies (SA)

Southeast Asia Studies (SEA), European and Eurasian Studies (EES), Latin American Studies (LASP), Middle East Studies (MES)

Most regional programs require 6 courses in that region and must pass proficiency in the language of that region; native speakers from those regions must pass proficiency in a second language which can include English Asia regional programs (China, Japan, Korea, South Asia, Southeast Asia) generally require 4 courses in the specific Asia region and then two additional courses across any of the other Asia programs—including courses under general Asia

Students concentrating in European and Eurasian Studies design their own program of study to achieve fixed learning outcomes as set out in the three comprehensive exams. The program does not have any required courses, although some courses are specifically tailored to assist in the preparation of these exams. Students are strongly encouraged to take at least one individual country course.

Some concentrations require specific cores Students must satisfy the core requirements prior to their final semester;

some concentrations require completion of a specific core(s) prior their third semester (exceptions may be made for those who are only at SAIS for two semesters)

(European and Eurasian Studies concentrators must pass 3 comprehensive exams in lieu of these core exams)
