There was once a King who had a great

palace with wonderful gardens. In

those gardens there lived thousands of

creatures from hundreds of different

species. They were of great variety

and colour, and they turned that place

into a kind of paradise that everyone

could enjoy.

There was only one thing in those

gardens that the King disliked: near

the centre stood the remains of what

paraíso para que todos puedan

y la multitud de criaturas que los

pueblan. Pero durante el tiempo que

pájaros pequeños... ¡Qué engaño

nada! "

El rey, que nunca trató de engañar a

nadie, se encontró , para su horror,

que

-“Majesty, you are the wisest of

men. Everywhere one hears talk of the

beauty of these gardens and the

multitude of creatures that populate

them. But during the time I’ve spent

here, I’ve hardly seen anything other

than this fountain and just a few small

birds… What a deception!”

The King, who never tried to deceive

anyone, found, to his horror, that

what the noble had told him was true.

They had spent so many months

admiring the fountains that they

hadn’t realised that hardly any animals

remained in the gardens. Without

wasting time he sent for the court’s

experts and advisers. The King had to

listen to many lies, inventions and

assumptions, but nothing could explain

what had happened. Not even the

great reward offered by the

King managed to recuperate the royal

gardens’ former splendour.

Many years later, a young man

presented himself to the King, assuring

him that he could explain what had

happened, and how the animals could

be returned.

-“What happened with your garden is

that there just wasn’t enough poo,

your majesty. Particularly moth poo.”

All those present laughed at the young

man’s joke. The guards got ready to

throw him out, but the King stopped

them.

-“I want to hear what you have to

say. From the thousand lies I’ve heard,

none have begun like that.”

The young man continued, very

serious, and started explaining how

the gardens’ big animals fed mainly on

the little brightly-coloured birds, who

broma de la joven. Los guardias se

prepararon para echarlo, pero el rey

los detuvo.

- "Quiero escuchar lo que tienen que

de comida para muchas otras aves ,

cuyo poo fomentado la aparición de

nuevas especies de plantas que

alimentan de otros insectos

garden are at my house. Before I

-“Your Majesty, I’m afraid that cannot

be,”

said the young man,

-“If you like I can try to recreate the

gardens, but you will not live to see it.

It will take many years for the natural

balance to reestablish itself. With great

good fortune perhaps I, when I'm old,

will see it completed. Things like these

on them.”

Entonces dijo el Rey al hijo mayor:

-Mañana, al amanecer, saldré

cabalgando por mi reino. Quiero que

me acompañes.

Al día siguiente se presentó el mayor

en la cámara real, pero no tan

temprano como le había mandado.

-Quiero vestirme -dijo el Rey.

El hijo mayor buscó al criado, pero el

criado no sabía qué vestido quería

ponerse el Rey. El mayor volvió a la

cámara real y lo preguntó.

-El verde -dijo el Rey-.

Then the eldest son said the King:

Tomorrow, at dawn, go out riding my

kingdom. I want you to accompany

me.

The next day he had the highest in

El hijo mayor dijo al criado que el Rey

quería el vestido verde, pero el criado

no sabía qué manto quería ponerse el

Rey, así que el mayor volvió a la

cámara real y lo preguntó.

-El blanco -dijo el rey.

Lo mismo pasó con los pantalones y

las babuchas, hasta que el criado

trajo toda la ropa y ayudó a vestirse

al Rey. Y cuando estaba ya vestido y

calzado:

-Quiero un caballo -dijo el rey-.

El hijo mayor fue a las cuadras y dijo

al caballerizo que preparara un

caballo para el Rey, pero el

caballerizo no sabía qué caballo debía

preparar, así que el mayor volvió a la

cámara real y lo preguntó.

-El negro -dijo el Rey-.

El hijo mayor dijo al caballerizo que el

Rey quería el caballo negro, pero el

caballerizo no sabía qué montura

debía colocarle, así que el mayor

volvió a la cámara real y lo preguntó.

-La de oro -dijo el Rey-.

The eldest son went to the stables

and told the groom to prepare a

horse for the King, but the groom did

not know which horse should prepare,

so the greater returned to the royal

chamber and asked.

The black said the King.

The eldest son told the groom that

the King wanted the black horse, but

the groom did not know what place

-The Golden said the King.

The same thing happened with the

Lo mismo pasó con las espuelas y las

riendas, con la espada y el escudo.

Cuando ya estuvo todo dispuesto:

-Cabalga tú -dijo el Rey-, recorre la

ciudad y dime a la vuelta lo que

hayas visto.

El hijo mayor salió de

palacio, montado en el caballo negro,

y acompañado por muchos caballeros

y guerreros que tocaban tambores y

trompetas.

-¿Qué te ha parecido? -le preguntó el

rey a su regreso.

Y el hijo mayor le respondió que las

trompetas y tambores que le

acompañaban, metían mucho ruido.

Al día siguiente mandó llamar al hijo

segundo y le hizo todas las pruebas

que le había hecho al mayor, y el

mediano a todo respondió lo mismo.

Al día siguiente mandó al hijo menor

que fuese a su cuarto muy temprano.

Y el menor madrugó y entró en la

cámara real cuando el Rey dormía

aún y estuvo muy callado esperando

hasta que despertase.

-Quiero vestirme -dijo el Rey-.

And the eldest son replied that the

trumpets and drums accompanying

him, they put a lot of noise.

The next day he sent for the second

managed to see the palace finished in

much less time than would have been

necessary to reestablish the balance of

nature of that garden in any other

place.

La cara del viejo rey estaba triste y

pensativo, entendiendo lo delicado era el

equilibrio de la naturaleza, y cómo había

sido descuidada romperla tan felizmente.

Pero él tanto amó esos jardines y esas

criaturas que decidió construir un gran

palacio junto a la tierra del joven. Y con

miles de hombres que trabajan en la

construcción, se las arregló para ver el

palacio terminado en mucho menos tiempo

de lo que hubiera sido necesario para

restablecer el equilibrio de la naturaleza de

ese jardín en cualquier otro lugar.
