Victorian-based stallions Written Tycoon (Iglesia) (49), Toronado (High Chaparral) (44), Zoustar (Northern Meteor) (39), Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel) (25), Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) (21) and Street Boss (Street Cry) (21) lead the way in terms of yearling numbers.

Hunter Valley-based stallions Dissident (Sebring) (20) and Sebring (More Than Ready) (20) and dual-hemisphere-performer Starspangledbanner (Choisir) (19) are also strongly represented, while leading stallions Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) and I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) also have a number of yearlings on offer at the Melbourne sale.

The Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale catalogue also features siblings to 88 stakes winners, including Group One winners Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor), Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega), Alinghi (Encosta De Lago), Le Romain (Hard Spun) and Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt),

Siblings to VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Kirramosa (Alamosa) and fellow Group One winners Rock Kingdom (Rock Of Gibraltar), May’s Dream (New Approach), Politeness (Street Sense), Faint Perfume (Shamardal) and Ortensia (Testa Rossa) will also be offered at Oaklands Junction.

Inglis Victorian bloodstock manager Simon Vivian said the company had focused on quality of conformation when determining which yearlings would be selected for book one of the sale.

In 2017, the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale reached a new benchmark

with its first yearling sold for more than $1,000,000, as an I Am Invincible half-brother to Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner The Quarterback (Street Boss) was sold to Ciaron Maher Racing for $1,400,000 from the Gilgai Farm draft.

This year’s sale ultimately averaged $120,262 and achieved a median yearling price of $100,000.

“We are really pleased with the way the catalogue has come together. We very heavily emphasised conformation and I am very proud of the collection of horses that are going to go through from a conformation viewpoint because nowadays that is such a vital aspect for the sale of any yearling,” Vivian told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“In some cases, I would have to say that we have sacrificed pedigree for the sake of conformation because the principle frontline buyer is the racehorse trainer - they want to have confidence in an athletic animal and that is what we have focused on.

“On a pre-sale inspection, this is the highest average physical score we have ever had for a Premier sale and that will be on display in March next year.”

Supreme Thoroughbreds celebrating ten years

This year’s leading vendor was the Victorian-based Supreme Thoroughbreds, who will again present a strong draft in 2018 with 30 yearlings catalogued in book one.

Overall, the 2018 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale catalogue has 541 lots offered by Victorian-based vendors, who make up 70 per cent of the catalogue.

Supreme Thoroughbreds celebrated ten years of operation this year and co-owner Brent Grayling was delighted with the farm’s development in that time to become this year’s leading Inglis Premier Yearling Sale vendor.

This year, Supreme Thoroughbreds will present a draft that includes a Zoffany (Dansili) half-sister to the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Gold Standard (Sebring), a lightly raced three-year-old who won this year’s Stan Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill.

Offered by Supreme Thoroughbreds on behalf of breeder Robert Crabtree’s Dorrington Farm as Lot 311, the filly is by the former Coolmore Stud shuttler Zoffany out of Group Three-winning mare Coniston Gem (Greig).

“I always look at them and think they look like babies but I said the same thing this year and we ended up having two yearlings make $500,000, so we definitely have some quality stock,” Grayling told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Overall, I would say we a stronger draft than this year and we won’t have any Premier two horses next year.”

Grayling said Supreme Thoroughbreds’ growth was helped in its infancy by backing a then-young stallion named Fastnet Rock to make the grade, a decision that has paid off.

“We have had success by picking stallions on the way up like Pierro, for example, we have hit him hard and next year we won’t be able to get near him but we will have two years of foals coming through by him,” he said.

Thursday 7 December 2017 | 4 |Supreme Thoroughbreds celebrating ten years

Continued on page 5>>

<< Continued from page 2 “Fastnet Rock was a horse who really got us going. We picked him right from the start and he launched Supreme Thoroughbreds.”

In the past two years, Supreme Thoroughbreds and clients have supported first crop stallion Dissident (Sebring), who has 20 yearlings catalogued, and Coolmore Stud-based sire Pierro (Lonhro).

Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Pierro, whose oldest progeny are three-year-olds, has sired five individual stakes winners including three during Melbourne Cup week at Flemington, headed by VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Pinot.

Pierro has 11 yearlings catalogued at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale including two from the Supreme Thoroughbreds draft.

Lot 63 is a Pierro colt also being offered on behalf of Dorrington Park by Supreme Thoroughbreds. The yearling is out of Group One-placed Magic Night Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Scandiva (Fastnet Rock).

Scandiva is a half-sister to Group One-winning sprinter and Group One-producing stallion Magnus (Flying Spur), Group Two winner Wilander (Exceed And Excel) and the Listed winner Arctic Flight (Flying Spur) and the unraced Helsinge (Desert Sun), the dam of champion mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit).

“Neil Shaw, my business partner, is a guru on pedigrees and he said, ‘don’t worry about Pierro, they aren’t going to make two-year-olds’, he was bred to be a stayer and now his daughter Pinot has won the Oaks already, so he is away,” he said.

“Pierro’s service fee will probably be $66,000 next year.”The Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale catalogue has 505 Super

Vobis-nominated yearlings, with 330 also eligible for the New South Wales Breeder Owner Bonus Scheme (BOBS).

Grayling said the majority of Supreme Thoroughbreds’ draft was Super Vobis eligible, a scheme he believes is the best in Australia, which ensures the yearlings were eligible for the inaugural restricted $1,000,000 Showdown race for two-year-olds to be run at Caulfield in 2019.

“Personally, I think it is essential. I think it is the best scheme out there,” he said. “I get trainers who come down and look and only want to inspect the Vobis horses.”

The Inglis Premier Yearling Sale also features progeny by 26 freshman stallions including Adelaide (Galileo), Brazen Beau, Deep Field (Northern Meteor), Puissance De Lune (Shamardal), Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor), Toronado and Wandjina (Snitzel).

Supreme Thoroughbreds is offering two yearlings by Newgate Farm-based Dissident, a sire Grayling believes has the credentials to be top-class.

One of Grayling’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale colts by Dissident, catalogued as Lot 325, is out of winning mare Cyclone Stacey (Encosta De Lago), whose juvenile half-brother by Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) was bought by George Moore Bloodstock for NZ$350,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale of 2YOs last month.

“We are a big wrap for Dissident and we sent quite a few mares to him and have foals on the ground by him, so I think he is a big chance to make it,” Grayling said.

Also among the Supreme Thoroughbreds draft is Lot 398, a Magnus half-brother to the Lindsay Park-trained Group Three winner and Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Fuhryk (Star Witness).

At this year’s sale, Supreme Thoroughbreds sold her half-sister by All Too Hard (Casino Prince) for $500,000 to Little Kwok Hing Hung and Bahen Bloodstock, one of 28 horses they sold for an aggregate of $3,572,500 at an average of $127,589 including selling a second yearling for $500,000, a Written Tycoon colt purchased by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

“It is our tenth year of business and this year we were the leading vendor in Victoria,” he said.

“If you said when we established the business that we would be the leading vendor at the Melbourne sale I would have thought you were dreaming.

“We have put our money where our mouth is. If someone wants us to buy a mare we aren’t prepared to go in ourselves and that is how we started our business: syndicating mares.

“We have got to the position where we can buy bigger percentages in those mares and the clients have stuck by us because they know it is also our money at stake.”

Woodside support sale with Written Tycoons

Another Victorian-based vendor, Woodside Park, who stand Written Tycoon as well as Zoustar in conjunction with Widden Stud, will present its biggest draft with 40 yearlings catalogued at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale next year.

Thirteen yearlings by Written Tycoon, the sire of 2016 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist, will be offered by Woodside Park, while they will also present yearlings by Zoustar, Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), I Am Invincible and freshman stallions Rubick (Encosta De Lago) and Brazen Beau.

Woodside Park bloodstock and sales manager Matt Tillett told ANZ Bloodstock News: “The Premier Sale is our major sale, with Woodside being a large Victorian-based farm and our draft is rapidly growing each year. We are up to 40 for the first time next year.

“Our draft is probably the strongest it has ever been. We have 13 Written Tycoons and eight yearlings by Zoustar, along with some horses by different sire lines who will add some diversity to our sale.”

Thursday 7 December 2017 | 5 |Woodside support sale with Written Tycoons

Among Woodside Park’s draft of Written Tycoon yearlings is Lot 199, a colt out of the stakes-placed sprinter Umgeton (Stratum), herself a daughter of the Listed winner Edgeton (Racer’s Edge).

“He is a client’s horse who is Super Vobis eligible and who is the first foal out of a multiple city-winning Stratum mare, which is a good cross with only two runners by that cross so far, one of them a stakes winner,” Tillett said.

“He is a package who looks like he is going to run as a two-year-old. The mum was fast and he looks like he will go early, too. He is one I think there will be lots of competition on.”

Two lots earlier, Woodside Park will offer another Written Tycoon colt, catalogued as Lot 197, who is out of the New Zealand-winning mare True Emotions (Giant’s Causeway).

“He is very typical of the Written Tycoons and looks a lot like Rich Enuff, of a Winning Rupert sort of a horse. He is a chestnut with some white on him,” he said.

“He may not have the strongest pedigree of all the Written Tycoons, but he just looks the running type.”

Written Tycoon’s service fee in 2015 was $19,800 (inc GST) but climbed to $49,500 (Inc GST) last year before again increasing to $88,000 (inc GST) this year.

“These yearlings are off a service fee of $19,800, so you will note that his pedigrees aren’t elite, but we have seen plenty of superstars already by Written Tycoon out of modest pedigrees and this service fee is the highest for his yearlings that have ever been offered so far.

“They are getting better all the time and hopefully these will be better again than the last yearlings.”

Range of pedigrees to suit all buyersThe Inglis Premier Yearling Sale has attracted vendors from all

Australian states as well as 43 horses to be offered by New Zealand operations, including Windsor Park Stud, Prima Park and Blandford Lodge.

“Typically, the Melbourne sale has always tried to offer a smorgasbord of stallions and we have 120 different stallions represented in a 770-lot catalogue, so that provides variety for a broad buying bench," said Simon Vivian.

“We are going to have a lot of yearlings by stallions who are going to suit our domestic buyers and our international buyers.”

On day one of the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, the last 43 lots offered will form the Blue Riband session, where 43 yearlings selected by the Inglis bloodstock team as potential Classic and staying-bred horses will be auctioned.

“The Blue Riband session is selected strictly to the criteria of horses we believe have the physical attributes and the pedigree page to be hopefully elite horses and over 1600 metres and further at three years and older,” Vivian said.

“We select that to a criteria and not to a number, so we have 43 yearlings who will be offered as the last 43 yearlings on day one on the Sunday at Premier.”

Vivian said vendors had supported the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale in numbers and quality for the 2018 edition on the back of a successful 2017 edition, which saw eight yearlings sell for $400,000 or more.

“I think we have been very well served by the Victorian sires who are eligible for the Super Vobis scheme to contribute to the sale,” he said.

“In the 770 lots, 541 are from Victoria, so over 70 per cent of the catalogue, so some of the bigger vendors from Victoria who are breeding a national product are selling selling those yearlings in Victoria.

“They have confidence in the market and in Inglis to be able to put together a very broad buying bench.”

Vivian recently returned from South Africa where he was meeting with potential buyers and he expects a large South African contingent to be at Oaklands Junction in March.

“I have just returned from a two-week canvassing campaign in South Africa and the response we’ve received from the owners and trainers was incredibly positive about coming to the Premier sale,” he said.

“We expect to have the usual people coming, like the principal South African agents and trainers like Mike De Kock and Brett Crawford. The catalogue is now at the printer and that is when we get serious about the promotion of the sale.”

Six straight for I’m WesleyIn-form five-year-old I’m Wesley (I Am Invincible) has continued his winning form, making it six victories in succession and two at stakes level when taking out the Conquering Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Launceston yesterday. Trained by Glenn Stevenson, I’m Wesley ($5) settled in third position for jockey Raquel Clark tracking the leader and $1.30 favourite Hellova Street (Helike) before cruising to the front in the straight to defeat the Scott Brunton-trained gelding. Gee Gees Top Notch (Wordsmith) finished third. I’m Wesley, who was purchased by Stevenson for $8,000 at the 2013 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale, has now won 11 of his 27 race starts, has now earned $248,400 in prize money from 11 wins in 27 starts.

It’s Somewhat on track for Kingston TownDoncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner It’s Somewhat (Dynaformer) is ready to peak in Saturday’s Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot, according to trainer James Cummings. To be ridden by Brenton Avdulla from barrier 11, It’s Somewhat has not raced since finishing third in the Emirates Stakes (registered as Mackinnon Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on 11 November. “He’s really been targeted at this race for the entire campaign and we feel that he’s building up to his peak for this preparation,” Cummings said. “He achieved a good result with his third in the Emirates Stakes at Flemington and the space between runs coming into this suits him, as he’s proved in the past.”

Rawiller pleased with barrier oneJockey Brad Rawiller says barrier one for Kingston Town Classic favourite Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) should allow the gelding to get a soft run and be strong over the distance.

The Darren Weir-trained gelding returned to Western Australia for the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) when narrowly beaten by Great Shot (Magnus) and goes from a handicap race to weight for age conditions in the Kingston Town Classic. "Barrier one sometimes means you might get caught a couple back on the fence, but I'll take it any day," Rawiller told Racing.com.

Celebrity Dream heads Jungle Dawn Classic fieldThe Adam Durrant-trained Celebrity Dream (Thorn Park) will bid to make it back-to-back Listed wins when she lines up in Saturday’s Jungle Dawn Classic (Listed, 1400m) at Ascot. The five-year-old mare won the Jungle Mist Classic (Listed, 1200m) at her last start and will race from barrier one for leading WA rider William Pike this weekend. Among her six rivals are Fontainebleau (Alfred Nobel), who won the Belmont Oaks (Listed, 2000m) in July, and Jungle Mist Classic third Top Of The Class (Star Witness).

Gaulois dropped in class at AscotGodolphin head trainer James Cummings is confident that Gaulois (Street Cry) can run a big race in the Lee-Steere Classic (Listed, 1400m) at Ascot on Saturday. The three-year-old colt ran fourth in the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at his last start and will face eight rivals in Saturday’s $100,000 Listed race. “He was very game in defeat at his past two starts after being wide both times,” Cummings said. “This is a race that Gaulois can be very competitive in given the great form he’s shown in his recent runs.” Click here to view Saturday’s Ascot acceptances.

Darabad on target for Pakenham CupThe Robbie Laing-trained Darabad (Dansili) is on course for a tilt at the Pakenham Cup (Listed, 2500m) on Saturday. The French-bred four-year-old was fourth in the Sandown Cup

(Listed, 3200m) at his last start when hanging in the straight, but Laing believes the gelding charted an errant course after he picked up a mouth injury when spooking at a group of deer. "He took off through the bushes and collided with a tree and to pull him up Wayne Cuddihy had to forcibly drag him to a halt," Laing said. "That ripped his mouth open on the left hand side and I'm sure that's why he hung. If he didn't hang and raced truly I think he wins the race. To his credit he gave a decent kick at the 200 metres and they didn't get past him without a fight."

Our Bottino off to PakenhamThe in-form Our Bottino (Bianconi) will return to Pakenham for a tilt a the David Bourke Memorial Handicap (1600m) on Saturday. The Matthew Williams-trained six-year-old has won on his last three visits to the track, albeit all three wins have come on the all-weather. "He certainly doesn't mind going to the place, so I hope he likes the grass as much as the synthetic," Williams said. "I think the grass certainly doesn't pose any issues for him but obviously he's up in grade a bit now." Our Bottino is set to face ten rivals in the $100,000 race this weekend.

Summer campaign for Like A CarouselLike A Carousel (Helike) is set to take the next step in his summer preparation in Saturday’s $250,000 Pakenham Cup. The Ken Keys-trained Listed-winning eight-year-old has only won three times during his career but has performed with distinction in Cup races, including a third place finish in the 2015 Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). "He's been an amazing horse and it's amazing that he hasn't won one of them (a Cup race)," Keys told Racing.com. "He's been placed many times in Cup races but he always manages to find one better on the day. He has great natural stamina and that he'll finish forward in the race.”

Willi Willi starts campaign at metro meetingThe lightly-raced four-year-old Willi Willi (Mint Lane) will kick off his campaign in the VOBIS Gold Bullion (1400m) at Pakenham on Saturday. The Craig Widdison-trained gelding won his last two starts last season, including victory in the Silver Bowl Series Final (1600m) at Flemington in July. "It was always the plan to give him a bit of a break and deliberately miss the spring," Widdison said. "He was still pretty immature and had a lot to learn so instead of throwing him in the deep end we thought we'd wait and target the summer. He's a pretty exciting sort of horse. Everything he has done so far he has done on raw ability.” Click here to view Saturday’s Pakenham acceptances.

Highly Geared to run at RosehillFellow Canberra trainer Doug Gorrell will be responsible for talented sprinting mare Highly Geared (Ad Valorem), who runs over 1100 metres at Rosehill on Saturday. Highly Geared is trained by Garry Kirkup, who was seriously injured in a car accident in southern New South Wales on Sunday, a crash that killed his partner and amateur jockey Samara Johnson. Racing NSW chief steward Marc Van Gestel said Gorrell would look after the eight-year-old mare while Kirkup remained in a Canberra hospital.

Maryore to make delayed returnA strangles outbreak at the Canberra stables of trainer Joe Ible saw Provincial Championship Final winner Maryore (Onemorenomore) sidelined but the six-year-old is finally set to run at Rosehill on Saturday. Maryore will be ridden by Tim Clark in the Benchmark 90 Handicap (1400m) having won a Canberra barrier trial on 1 December. “It’s been a matter of trying to get her fit again to get a run into her so she can come back and be at her best in the autumn,” Ible said. Click here to view Saturday’s Rosehill acceptances.

McGillivray keeps Crack Me Up ride Jockey Matt McGillivray has kept the ride aboard Crack Me Up (Mossman) in Saturday’s Brisbane Handicap (Listed, 1600m) at

Doomben. The Liam Birchley-trained four-year-old took out the Recognition Stakes (Listed, 1350m) second up on 25 November and was one of 15 horses declared for the $100,000 race. Birchley added that the Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on 16 December is also on Crack Me Up’s radar. "I would have used Damian but he wasn't keen to go to Sydney," Birchley said. "Matt deserves a good ride so I thought he might as well keep the ride for this week. The Brisbane Handicap will be a good guide for us (ahead of Villiers). It is a strong field and it will give us a very good idea where we stand."

Angland confident of victoryJockey Tye Angland is hopeful that New South Wales can successfully defend their Origin Jockeys Challenge title at Doomben on Saturday. Angland and Michael Rodd were part of NSW’s successful Origin Challenge last year. “I really enjoy the Origin concept, it’s different” Angland said. “There’s a lot more banter in the jockeys’ room and behind the barriers. I’m quietly confident NSW can win the series again but it all comes down to the quality of horse you draw.” Click here to view Saturday’s Doomben acceptances.

Tizso Wicked possible for Marion StakesLast start Moonee Valley winner Tizso Wicked (Duporth) is likely to tackle the City Of Marion Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday. Trainer David Feek also accepted for a race at Moonee Valley tomorrow with the mare but said she is more likely to run in the Listed race, for which 14 horses have been declared. "There is a strong likelihood we travel her because she was bought as a broodmare prospect and it would make sense from a breeding point of view to have a throw at the stumps of achieving black type,” Feek told Racing.com. "We're very happy with the horse, she won well at Moonee Valley on Friday night and she's really come on from the run." Click here to view Saturday’s Morphettville acceptances.

Irish recruits join Howley stableFive new Irish recruits previously trained by Aidan O’Brien have joined the Mt Macedon

stable of Liam Howley, who is the private trainer for leading owner Lloyd Williams. The horses who were recently shipped to Australia are Group Three winners Douglas Macarthur (Galileo), Spanish Steps (Galileo) and Venice Beach (Galileo), Listed winner Orderofthegarter (Galileo) and Group Three placegetter Exemplar (Galileo).

Scream Park could target New Zealand featureThe Chris Waller-trained Scream Park (Ocean Park) could be aimed towards the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m) in New Zealand next month after breaking his maiden in decisive fashion at Warwick Farm yesterday. The colt, who was purchased for NZ$185,000 at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, opened his account by a length and three quarters over 1400 metres. "He's got a bit of a way to go yet but he had to win today to keep that option available," part-owner Jack Lake said. "It's only his second start but he's a striking-looking animal, and I think once he learns his craft hopefully he'll keep going and finish up in New Zealand."

Lisdoonvarna relishes the wet conditionsLisdoonvarna (Super Easy) made light work of the Heavy 9 track at Warwick Farm yesterday when landing a Benchmark 73 (1300m) in ready fashion under jockey Peter Wells. The Amanda Turner and Mauro Poletti-trained three-year-old filly ran home strongly on her first attempt at the trip to beat the Godolphin-raced Savatiano (Street Cry) by two and three quarter lengths in the $40,000 race. "She's done a lot in one prep so I hope she can keep doing what she's doing," co-trainer Turner said.

Northey injuredJockey Daniel Northey has been taken to hospital with suspected pelvic injuries after a trackwork fall at Scone. Northey was hurt when a horse he was jumping out of the barrier reared up and came down on top of him. Racing NSW chief steward Marc Van Gestel said Northey had been airlifted to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Northey rides mostly in the NSW Hunter and north-western regions.

Plumptre joins Cambridge StudFormer Godolphin Australia managing director Henry Plumptre has been appointed as the new chief executive of Cambridge Stud. Plumptre will begin his role when new owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay assume control of the stud from Sir Patrick Hogan in April and will oversee both the running of the stud and the Lindsay Racing team. "Henry Plumptre has overseen some exceptional achievements during his career," Brendan Lindsay said. "He has built world-class brands and brings vast international experience to this new role.” Plumptre added: "To oversee the future success of Cambridge Stud is a once in a lifetime opportunity and is one that I simply could not turn down.”

Nirvana aimed at Karaka MillionThe promising two-year-old colt Nirvana In Fire (Showcasing) could be aimed towards the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie in January after he made an impressive winning debut over 1100 metres at Pukekohe yesterday. “We’ve got a few dollars and we’ll have to look for some more pretty quickly,” said Andrew Scott, who trains in partnership with Lance O’Sullivan. “He needs to get familiar with Ellerslie so we’ll pick out one of the races at the carnival there for him. He’s built to run early and everything is indicating that he’s a fast-running type.”

Bright future for MerliniCambridge trainer Tony Pike is confident that the lightly raced Merlini (I Am Invincible) has a bright future after the three-year-old gelding broke his maiden over 1100 metres at Pukekohe yesterday, beating Monaco (Per Incanto) by a head under jockey Jordan Nason. “He’s always had a lot of natural ability, but he’s still very much a work in progress,” Pike said. “When the penny drops and he puts it all together, he’ll be going through the grades pretty quickly.”

Athletica back in workThe promising three-year-old Athletica (Tavistock) is back in work and will be aimed towards the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m) next month. Trainer Andrew Campbell opted to skip the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) with the colt and has no regrets over his decision. “I’m glad, it was the right call,” Campbell said. “It’s a tough, three-day trip that can knock them around too much. He’s come back well from a break and strengthened up. He’s nominated for the Derby and first we’ll try to get him to the Karaka Million race.”

Allpress remains on sidelinesJockey Lisa Allpress faces and extended spell on the sidelines after her recovery from a shoulder injury took longer than anticipated. “I went to the surgeon today and I’m going to be another six weeks in a sling on my right side and I’ll know more about the left side in three months and whether it heals or I’ll need an operation,” Allpress said. “I definitely won’t be back before March, but I’m positive and there are an awful lot more people worse off than me. It could have been so much worse.”

Purton wins International Jockeys' ChampionshipFormer Hong Kong champion jockey Zac Purton won the International Jockeys'

Championship at Happy Valley yesterday evening. Purton guided the Danny Shum-trained Our Hero (Fastnet Rock) to success in the first of four legs for the competition, while he also rode the Peter Ho-trained Let’s Take It Easy (Street Boss) to success in the third leg to amass 24 points. Silvestre De Sousa finished second with 18 points and one winner, while French rider Pierre-Charles Boudot also rode one winner and came third with 16 points. Defending champion Hugh Bowman finished in fourth place with 12 points. Click here to view yesterday’s Happy Valley replays.

Stormy Liberal faces HK Sprint challengeGrade One winner Stormy Liberal (Stormy Atlantic), the sole American runner at this year’s Hong Kong International Races, will race right-handed for the first time in Sunday’s Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m). The five-year-old won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) at Del Mar last month, and his trainer Peter Miller does not expect the change in direction to be a hindrance. “Going right-handed is always a question and there are a lot of things to overcome as an American horse in a very different racing environment, but we breezed him three times going what we would call the wrong way and he was fine,” Miller said. “The going and the distance will suit him in Hong Kong and he’s the right horse to try with.”

Max Dynamite on course for Vase

The Willie Mullins-trained Max Dynamite (Great Journey) is reportedly in good shape ahead of his bid to land the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The gelding has twice finished placed in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), running third last month and second in 2015, and Mullins’ assistant trainer David Casey is hopeful the horse can finish in the frame in the HK$18,000,000 Group One this weekend. “The horse is fit and well. It’s no easy task on Sunday but he’s done well and if he could pick up some prize money, that would be grand,” Casey said.

Quebee sold for 200,000gns at TattsAt the time of going to press, the Listed winner Quebee (Sir Percy) was topping the third session of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale having been purchased by Suzanne Roberts / Deerpark Stud for 200,000 guineas from the draft of Beechdown Farm Stables. Catalogued as Lot 2112, the four-year-old filly is from the same family as Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), a Group One-winning two-year-old and the sire of last year’s European champion three-year-old colt Almanzor. “She has a great outcross pedigree and could visit any stallion. We have not got anything in mind yet, we'll sit and deliberate,” Roberts said.

Toast Of New York wins on comebackGroup Two winner Toast Of New York (Thewayyouare), who was beaten a nose into second in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) at Santa Anita, made a winning return to action after 1,130 days off the track at Lingfield Park in

Britain yesterday. The Jamie Osborne-trained and Al Shaqab-raced six-year-old, who also won the UAE Derby (Gr 2, 1900m) at Meydan in 2014, was retired with a tendon injury and had been standing at stud in Qatar but returned to Osborne’s stable earlier this year. The entire could now be prepared for a tilt at the Pegasus World Cup (Gr 1, 9f) at Gulfstream in January or the Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Meydan in March.

1,582 catalogued for January Sale The catalogue for the Keeneland January Horses Of All Ages Sale is now available to view online. A total of 1,582 horse have been catalogued for the four-day sale, which will be held from 8-11 January, including 677 broodmares and broodmare prospects, 628 yearlings, 264 horses of racing age and 13 stallions and racing or stallion prospects. South Australian mare Viddora (I Am Invincible) [115] broke through for a deserved Group One success in Saturday's Winterbottom Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) at Ascot in a performance one pound under her peak Timeform rating, write Simon Dinopoulos and Alex Steedman.

Viddora returned a figure of 115, one pound less than her 116-rated effort when second to She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) [119] in the A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley when resuming on 29 September.

A luckless second in that race, Viddora followed the Moir Stakes with a good fourth in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at the same course on 27 October.

Trainer Lloyd Kennewell then kept Viddora fresh, lining up on Saturday off a 36-day break and by all reports, she had thrived during her time in Perth.

Ridden by regular rider Joe Bowditch, Viddora was slow to move but then relished a solid tempo after settling just worse than midfield. Angled nicely by Bowditch into the clear on straightening, Viddora displayed a good turn of foot, took the lead at the 100 metres and then went on to win by a length and a half from Fuhryk (Star Witness) [110] with Durendal (Medaglia d’Oro) [114] a long head away in third.

The Lindsay Park-trained mare Fuhryk found the line well along the inside for second, staging a really good effort after missing the start badly and coming from the tail of the field.

Viddora’s victory was notably her first at 1200 metres, with five of her seven career wins being achieved short of 1100 metres.

Her 115-rated win was sound but not outstanding, with Takeover Target (Celtic Swing) [126] the highest-rated winner of the Winterbottom Stakes and Ortensia (Testa Rossa) [117] the highest-rated winning mare.

Favourite for the race, Rock Magic (Redoute’s Choice) [109] ran on well from the tail of the field for fifth but was found to have

returned lame in the off fore and with an elevated heart rate - he has been sent for a spell.

The recent Colonel Reeves Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner State Solicitor (Nicconi) [104] finished a disappointing eighth. Ridden by leading jockey William Pike, the gelding settled in midfield and failed to make any ground over the final stages and on face value it was hard to find any excuses.

A winner of nine of his 13 starts, State Solicitor’s record is very good, however of those nine wins, eight have them had been in Benchmark class or below, his victory in the Colonel Reeves Stakes being his first in stakes class.

There is no doubting State Solicitor’s consistent record, which has a high winning percentage but the bare form still lacks substance at the elite level.

At this stage State Solicitor has a Timeform master rating of 108p – he rated four pound less on Saturday and is currently well short of what is required to be winning a Group One event.

State Solicitor will now press on to the A J Scahill Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ascot on 16 December, which will be his first attempt beyond 1300 metres.

The feature race at Rosehill on Saturday saw the Gary Portelli-trained Testashadow (Testa Rossa) [109] making a return to form in taking out the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m).

Settled in midfield, Testashadow came off the bridle a long way from home but still managed to produce a sustained run and claim a slender success in a three-way finish.

Testashadow scored by a nose from Mister Sea Wolf (Amadeus Wolf) [109] with the top

weight Red Excitement (Excites) [114] finishing a neck away in third.

Returning a Timeform rating of 109, Testashadow took a new master figure, coming in a pound clear of his prior best of 108 achieved on two occasions, the latest of which came when third in the 2017 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) in April.

Testashadow’s 109 rating was a shade below the prior five year winning average of the Festival Stakes and the six-year-old gelding will now head to the Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick on 16 December.

A key talking point out of Saturday’s race was the Australian debut of the Chris Waller-trained Mister Sea Wolf who was only narrowly beaten, returning a Timeform rating of 104.

Mister Sea Wolf will no doubt derive improvement from that outing, his first start since August and profiles as a lightweight Villiers Stakes prospect with a Timeform master figure of 109 when stakes-placed in Ireland.

In the Starlight Stakes (Listed, 1100m) the Bjorn Baker-trained mare Egyptian Symbol (Stratum) [112] resumed after racing at the Queensland Winter Carnival, staging a bold first up effort in winning.

8 track to score by just over a length, taking a new 112 Timeform peak rating in the process, a figure which is above the prior five year winning average of the race.

She is now expected to head to next month’s Magic Millions meeting, a path Egyptian Symbol has taken for the past two years.

When just about every superpower from the bloodstock world gathers around one sales ring almost

anything is possible, and Marsha (Acclamation) duly smashed the European auction record when Coolmore's MV Magnier outgunned John Gosden at 6,000,000 guineas at Tuesday's session of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in Newmarket.

Back at Book One of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, it was Gosden that emerged victorious when landing the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) filly out of Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (Gr 1, 10f) winner Dank (Dansili) at 4,000,000 guineas on behalf of Godolphin. On this occasion Magnier was in no mood to be denied.

Each bid from Coolmore's man, often delivered after a lengthy consultation with Paul Shanahan, was met with a sharp nod of the head from Gosden, who was tucked away behind the partition just as he had been back in October.

"She walks like a rockstar," said auctioneer

Simon Kerins with the five million mark in sight, but when Magnier raised six digits from in the gangway to signal a bid of 6,000,000 guineas there was no encore forthcoming as Gosden quickly turned away and exited stage left.

"She's very quick and Sir Mark [Prescott] did a great job with her," said Magnier as he signed the docket carrying the European auction record price. "Hopefully we can do half the job he's done with her."

The four-year-old filly, who was catalogued as Lot 1848, won seven races for Newmarket trainer Prescott and owners the Elite Racing Club, including this year's Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) and last year's Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m). Those exploits have now earned her a date with the most dominant stallion of the current era.

"She's going to Galileo," confirmed Magnier. "She's one of the best sprinters around and she has a lovely presence about her."

Marsha's trainer, who has handled the filly's racing career with typical aplomb, was among those on hand to witness the recording-breaking transaction.

Superpowers collide as Marsha brings 6,000,000 from Magnier

"I was surprised," said Prescott when asked if he had expected Marsha to scale such heights in the ring. "But it's great for Elite Racing, we got 47 of them here on a bus and not many horses have that when they go to the ring.

"She's gone to a great home and her stock will be wonderfully trained. It's just been a very good story. She looked a million dollars and she's made it easy. She's just the most consistent sprinter, I won't say she's the best but she's the most consistent. She's never turned a hair here despite everybody poking about."

Despite the racing powerhouses that went toe to toe for the filly, who shares her family with the great Soviet Song (Marju), Marsha was offered on behalf of the Elite Racing Club, whose members gained access to the club for as little as £199 a year.

"I feel exhausted but elated," said Elite Racing Club manager Dan Downie. "We knew we were coming here with a lovely filly but you never dare to dream of that. We knew she was worth a fair bit of money and we were pretty confident. You don't often come to a sale and feel confident unless you have something perfect to offer.

"If she hadn't reached a level we thought was fair we would definitely have kept her but I think we always thought that was unlikely given that you can't really fault her as a specimen - she's pretty much perfect."

No keeping Quiet

Remarkably, Marsha was not the only dual Group One-winning sprinter to be offered by a syndicate during Tuesday's session, as Quiet Reflection (Showcasing) also went the way of Magnier, whose name appeared on the docket alongside that of Blandford Bloodstock, for 2,100,000 guineas.

It looked for a moment as if the daughter of Showcasing (Oasis Dream) had been landed by Oliver St Lawrence, before Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff appeared on the back stairs and swiftly delivered the winning bid for the filly, who was catalogued as Lot 1861.

"She's a very special filly, a brilliant sprinter," said Goff. "She was very well trained and well selected by Karl Burke, and a filly that a lot of people have been chasing privately."

When quizzed if Quiet Reflection would be retired, Goff said: "It hasn't been discussed yet but I suspect that the time has come for her to be a mother."

This was the third time that Quiet Reflection had been through the sales ring, having first been picked up as a yearling by Geoffrey Howson for £32,000 before she realised £44,000 from Burke at the Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale.

She went on to win eight races for Burke and the Ontoawinner syndicate, a race record headed by her stunning victories in the Haydock Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f) and the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot.

"She's been a fantastic filly and has gone to a top-class farm," said Burke, whose apprentice jockey Jordan Vaughan led Quiet Reflection around the ring.

"Hopefully they'll send me one of her offspring to train! You can not replace her though. I trained her second dam, Clare Hills, and that's what it was that caught my eye in the first place."

Different gear

Not content with acquiring two of the most talented fillies around, Magnier made another seven-figure purchase during the session, having earlier parted with 1,500,000 guineas in partnership with elusive owner Peter Brant for the Albany Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) winner Different League (Dabirsim).

"Different League will go to Ballydoyle and will stay in training," said Magnier.

Catalogued a Lot 1836, , Different League has taken the Marnane family on the journey of a lifetime, having been bought by Con Marnane for just €8,000 as a foal. She won her first three starts for French trainer Matthieu Palussiere, a run that included her memorable Royal Ascot victory.

"She did over 500 shows here, just unbelievable," said a visibly stunned Marnane, whose daughter Amy consigned the Dabirsim (Hat Trick) filly. "She never turned a hair. Her last show was as good as her first."

League back at Arqana in December 2015, Marnane said: "She had this great walk and is such a strong, good topped filly. She has great hindquarters.

"We tried to sell her as a yearling but couldn't - we had no one on her. Perhaps they thought she was too tall, would take too much time - they were all wrong!"

Stroud snap upHaving missed out on the session-topper,

Godolphin enjoyed better fortune in their pursuit of Zhukova (Fastnet Rock), catalogued as Lot 1868, who they snared for 3,700,000 guineas.

Anthony Stroud, bidding from the back stairs, outlasted Justin Casse, James Wigan and then Ballylinch Stud's John O'Connor for the mare by Coolmore shutler Fastnet Rock (Danehill), who landed the Man O'War Stakes (Gr 1, 11f) earlier this year for Dermot Weld.

"She's a very nice filly, a Grade One winner who is out of a Group One winner [Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Nightime]," said Stroud. "Logically, the thing to do is go to Dubawi."

Zhukova was sold by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of John Murrell and his wife Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez. The pair also had a good result with Group Three-winning sprinter Only Mine (Pour Moi) (Lot 1864), who made 925,000 guineas to the Niarchos family.

Elite additionThe seven-figure lots came thick and fast

during Tuesday's session, and David Redvers got in on the act to secure Wekeela (Hurricane Run) at 1,800,000 guineas. The five-year-old daughter of Hurricane Run (Montjeu), who won a Group Three while in training in France and a Grade Three at Monmouth Park having transferred to the US in 2016, was offered by European Sales Management.

"She'll join Sheikh Fahad's elite band of broodmares," said Redvers. "She's as beautiful a mare as it's possible to imagine, she's incredibly sexy and hopefully she's going to breed something magnificent. I'm delighted to get her, I wasn't sure we would as I thought she might go beyond our budget."

Redvers added that "several" stallions were under consideration for Wekeela's first cover. She was catalogued as Lot 1828.

Newsells keep it in the family

The first of ten seven-figure lots on the day came when Oliver St Lawrence secured Enable's (Nathaniel) half-sister Birdwood (Oasis Dream) (Lot 1797) for 1,100,000 guineas. The mare was offered by, and bought on behalf of, Newsells Park, who bought out their partners for the daughter of Oasis Dream (Green Desert), who was secured for just 150,000 guineas 12 months earlier.

"Last year David and Peter Winkworth

asked if they could come in with us on her and we like working in partnership," said Newsells general manager Julian Dollar.

"I'd seen Enable win three days before we bought [Birdwood] and I thought'd she'd make a lovely mare for Nathaniel. Ironically the partners asked if we could wait and see if Enable was any good before we sent her to Nathaniel!

"They had to cash out and I can completely understand that. When I looked at the catalogue I tried to calculate how I could buy a queen and, for me, she was the most affordable queen

I could get as we already owned half of her. Nathaniel sounds like a good bet for her next cover."

FiguresThe session, which will live long in the

memory, generated turnover of 45,665,000 guineas - up a phenomenal 79 per cent year-on-year. The average jumped by 90 per cent to 260,943 guineas and the median was up by 25,000 guineas to 85,000 guineas. The clearance rate stood at 76 per cent, with 175 of 229 offered lots changing hands.

Hong Kong Cup(Gr 1, 2000m)

Blond Me (Tamayuz) (GB) - Work rider Leanne Masterton partnered the filly as usual, and she looked comfortable cantering around the all-weather track. “Still all good,” Masterton said, also confirming that trainer Andrew Balding would be arriving in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Deauville (Galileo) (IRE) - Followed stable companion Highland Reel (Galileo) in routine work through a lap of the all-weather track under usual partner Gary O’Connor. Clocked 45.0s (15.8, 14.8, 14.4) for 600 metres.

Garlingari (Linngari) (FR) - Trainer Corine Barande-Barbe made it from Hong Kong International Airport in time to catch Garlingari canter a single lap of the Sha Tin all-weather under Zoe Gargoulaud and was pleased with what she saw. In terms of stepping down in trip from 2400 metres in the Hong Kong Vase 12 months ago to the Hong Kong Cup over 2000 metres on Sunday, Barande-Barbe believes the shorter race will see Garlingari in a better light.

The trainer said: “In France I think 2000 metres is his best trip but here you need more

speed so we trained him at home for that. It’s a nice challenge for him. He is a year older and now he is six is more mature. He has also had an easier year than in 2016, when he ran all through the spring and then maybe tailed off slightly. Now he is on his way to the top and the top will be on Sunday.”

Neorealism (Neo Universe) (JPN) - Neorealism walked and jogged in the quarantine stable trotting ring before he cantered two laps on the all-weather track. Trainer Noriyuki Hori said: “The main point is to keep him relaxed in these different surroundings. I asked the rider to reacquaint himself to the environment while working him. Regarding the fast work, I will decide whether he gallops on Thursday or Friday. It depends on the horse’s condition, the track condition and the weather tomorrow morning. But Joao Moreira will be on board when he gallops.”

Poet’s Word (Poet’s Voice) (GB) - On his toes as he tracked the flighty USA sprinter Stormy Liberal (Stormy Atlantic) onto the turf this morning, then stretched his legs over 600 metres in 46.6s (16.8, 14.6, 15.2).

Latest updates from Sha Tin in the lead-up to Sunday’s HKIR

Robin Of Navan (American Post) (GB) - The Group One-winning colt continued his preparation with a canter around the all-weather track, supervised by trainer Harry Dunlop. Clocked 31.4s (15.8, 15.6) for 400 metres of the all-weather track. Dunlop said: “Firstly I would like to thank the Hong Kong Jockey Club for everything they are doing for us, just fantastic.” He added: “I’ve tried to learn from my brother (trainer Ed Dunlop who has sent out three HKIR winners) and really the plan is just to keep him fresh in the run-up to Sunday. We’ve heard lots of good things about his big-race rider Sam (Clipperton) and he’ll be having a sit on him on Friday.”

Secret Weapon (Choisir) (HK) - Exercised on the small inner all-weather track.

Smart Layer (Deep Impact) (JPN) - Cantered one and a half laps around the Sha Tin all-weather track and schooled in the paddock. Assistant trainer Kota Kato said: “Today I rode her for a lap and a half on the all-weather. She feels great and has a nice action right now. Tomorrow we will breeze her on the turf with Yutaka Take riding her.”

Staphanos (Deep Impact) (JPN) - Cantered one and a half laps around the Sha Tin all-weather track and clocked 44.8s (16.2, 13.2, 15.4) for the final 600 metres. Assistant trainer Kazuo Fujiwara said: “He is right where we want him right now. He’ll have his fast work tomorrow with Hugh Bowman aboard.”

Time Warp (Archipenko) (HK) - Had a jump out from the gate on the all-weather track in company with Peniaphobia (Dandy Man). Clocked 21.7s for 400 metres. Trainer Tony Cruz said: “I’m happy with him. He’s fit and well for Sunday.”

War Decree (War Front) (IRE) - Repeated the exercise routine of the past two days in the middle of the Ballydoyle quintet with his lad Derek Stamp in the irons.

Werther (Tavistock) (HK) - Exercised two laps on the small inner all-weather track under Tommy Berry. Trainer John Moore said: “He’s well, he’s as fit as I can have him. He’ll be peaking at the right time. He’ll gallop tomorrow (Thursday) at 6am along with the rest of my team.”

Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m)

Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) (HK) - Exercised on the all-weather track under Derek Leung. Trainer John Moore said: “Everything has gone to plan. He’ll be out on the turf with the others tomorrow (Thursday).”

Beauty Only (Holy Roman Emperor) (HK) - Had a jump out from the gate on the all-weather track and breezed 400 metres in company with Gold Mount (Excellent Art). Clocked 21.6s.

Trainer Tony Cruz said: “I’m happy with all four of mine, they’re all fit and well. Beauty Only seems to have improved since his last run, there’s not much to look at once you get past his distinctive head but he seems well.”

Contentment (Hussonet) (HK) - Contentment worked 800 metres on the all-weather track in 58.8s (33.9, 24.9).

Helene Paragon (Polan) (HK) - Exercised a lap of the all-weather track under Sam Clipperton.

Trainer John Moore said: “He’s over the little eye issue he had and he’s heading the right way. It took a bit of work but we got there. He will gallop tomorrow (Thursday) morning.”

Horse Of Fortune (Stronghold) (HK) - Exercised two laps of the small inner all-weather track.

Joyful Trinity (Zanzibari) (HK) - Cantered a lap of the all-weather track under Tommy Berry.

Karar (Invincible Spirit) (FR) - Karar reprised his role of shadowing Vase contender and compatriot Talismanic (Medaglia d'Oro) around the all-weather track before taking in some paddock schooling. Freshly-arrived from Paris overnight, trainer Francis Graffard has been happier with the son of Invincible Spirit’s (Green

Desert) preparation and overall condition than ahead of his seventh-placed run in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f).

Trainer Francis Graffard said: “He had a very long journey to get here and that was bound to take a little bit out of him but he seems to me to be very well, better in fact than I expected. I think he looks better than he did in the United States, where his coat was a bit dull. He is nice and supple and his work before leaving France was better than it was ahead of the Breeders’ Cup. The only thing is that he had a really long trip to get here because at the last moment he had to switch and travel over with the British horses.”

Lancaster Bomber (War Front) (IRE) - With Seamie Heffernan on board as he has been all week, he cantered of a lap of the all-weather track with his Ballydoyle stable companions. Lancaster Bomber, who has been runner up in five Group One races in his 14-race career to date, most recently in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, was his usual relaxed self as he went through his routine.

Seamie Heffernan said as he headed off the track: “Everything’s good with him, he seems very well, and I’m happy with the way he is.”

Lightning Spear (Pivotal) (GB) - The six-time winner made his first appearance at Sha Tin today, doing some easy work around the all-weather track, partnered by the trainer’s wife Jenny Simcock.

Jenny Simcock said: “He was a little bit fresh and on his toes though that was probably because it was his first day on the track. Hopefully he’ll settle in over the next couple of days.”

Roly Poly (War Front) (USA) - With regular rider Richella Carroll on board, the filly brought up the rear in the Ballydoyle quintet as she put in another routine canter, mirroring her exercise of the past two days. The three-year-old filly, like Lancaster Bomber the produce of War Front (Danzig), is small of stature but big of heart, and already a three-time Group One winner this year. It has been easy for track work observers to overlook her as she has gone quietly about her business all week.

Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) (JPN) - Trainer Yasutoshi Ikee supervised Satono Aladdin’s work on the all-weather track as he came home through the final 600 metres in 44.6s (14.8, 15.0, 14.8).

Ikee said: “He seems well and looks good in condition. It is his third time in Hong Kong. Everything has gone well, as planned. In the Tenno Sho Autumn, it was a really rain-soaked track and in the following Mile Championship, the track was not as bad as the Tenno Sho, but it was still a bit soft. The three factors that the horse needs are fast track, high pace and outer draw. He is a hold-up runner and comes from behind with a burst of speed. This is his last start before he goes to stud, so hopefully he can run his race.”

Seasons Bloom (Captain Sonador) (HK) - Exercised on the small inner all-weather track.

Sichuan Dar (Not A Single Doubt) (HK) - Exercised two laps on the inner small all-weather track.

Western Express (Encosta De Lago) (HK) - Worked 800 metres on the all-weather track in 59.2s (33.8, 25.4).

Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m)

Amazing Kids (Falkirk) (HK) - Galloped over 400 metres on the all-weather track in 25.7s.

Blizzard (Starcraft) (HK) - Exercised on the small inner all-weather track.

Trainer Ricky Yiu said: “He’s going nicely. He’ll gallop on the turf tomorrow (Thursday), unfortunately Gerald (Mosse) will not be here but we’ve got the next best thing – his daughter’s partner! Umberto (Rispoli) knows the horse well so we’re keeping it in the family. Blizzard’s not in the same company as my other

Sprint winners (Fairy King Prawn and Sacred Kingdom) but he is honest.”

D B Pin (Darci Brahma) (HK) - Given a sharp gallop over 400 metres on the all-weather track, clocking 25.1s.

Let’s Go Donki (King Kamehameha) (JPN) - Cantered one and a half laps around the Sha Tin all-weather track, completing her final 200 metres in 12.0s, and schooled in the paddock.

Groom Yoshiaki Terada said: “She was a little off her feed this morning but she was full of energy today on the track and schooled in the paddock with her friend Smart Layer. She’ll have her final work on the turf course tomorrow.”

Lucky Bubbles (Sebring) (HK) - Exercised on the small inner all-weather track.

Trainer Francis Lui said: “He’s fine. We galloped him on Monday and we’re happy with his condition. He’ll gallop on the dirt tomorrow.”

Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) (HK) - Took to the all-weather track for an 800-metre gallop, stopping the clock in 58.9s (32.9, 26.0).

Not Listenin’tome (Dylan Thomas) (HK) - Exercised on the all-weather track.

Once In A Moon (Admire Moon) (JPN) - Completed a strong canter over the Sha Tin turf track under Zac Purton, before schooling in the parade ring.

Purton said: “She seems healthy and bright. She is only small which you already know, but she was just having a bit of a look at the track today. She had a bit of a look around as well. Something frightened her a little bit, but once

she got going, she felt nice – her action was good, attitude was good. She pulled up nice. We will do a bit more with her tomorrow and hopefully she will be alright on Sunday.”

Peniaphobia (Dandy Man) (HK) - Given a 400-metre breeze out of the gates on the all-weather track under race rider Matthew Chadwick, alongside Time Warp, clocking 21.7s.

Trainer Tony Cruz said: “I was just worried that he got too heavy – as they get older they get heavier, it’s harder to get them fit – and he’s lost a bit of speed, too. But in terms of health, like all of mine, he’s a very healthy horse.”

Signs Of Blessing (Invincible Spirit) (FR) - Signs Of Blessing made his first venture out of quarantine when cantering around the all-weather under Wilfred Conart, showing no outward ill-effects from either the journey or the change of scenery. He picked up the pace slightly entering the home straight, covering the last 400 metres in 30.6s (15.2, 14.8).

Stormy Liberal (Stormy Atlantic) (USA) - Keen to get moving this morning as he came onto the track with his lead pony. Worked on the turf over 600 metres in 39.8s (14.4, 13.0, 12.4)

Trainer Peter Miller, who watched the work via video from his California home, said: “He looked well to my eye and travelled well within himself. It was a good leg stretcher and he handled the ground. The team has been telling me the horse is doing really well and his energy levels are high. We’re hoping for a good draw and if he gets that, I think he’ll perform well.”

The Right Man (Lope De Vega) (FR) - Another to complete a brisk canter around the Sha Tin all-weather, he completed his final 200 metres in 13s. He also schooled in the parade ring.

Cyrille Estampes, travelling head lad to trainer Didier Guillemin, said: “He cantered normally this morning and no more. His trainer will be here tomorrow. He has acclimatised well and to my eyes he is at least as well as he was before his last run at Maisons-Laffitte.”

Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice) (HK) - Breezed over 800 metres on the all-weather track, clocking 59.1s (32.5, 26.6).

Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m)

Chemical Charge (Sea The Stars) (GB) - Breezed around the all-weather track, looking on good terms with himself.

Danehill Kodiac (Kodiac) (GB) Cantered behind fellow British challenger Robin Of Navan (American Post) under big race rider Sean Levey, who partnered him to a gate to wire victory in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Ascot in October.

Travelling head lad Tony Gorman said: “All’s good on the training front and we’re looking for a good gate.” And he added jokingly as he looked towards co-owner Andy Smith: “That’s your responsibility tomorrow!”

Smith said: “This horse owes us nothing especially as we bought him with hurdling in mind, yet he’s only gone and won a Group Three at Ascot – beating a horse who was placed in the French Derby! Our horse is really tough and loves to eyeball other horses. We also think that the surface will suit him better than the slow ground that he’s been racing on most of this year.”

Eagle Way (More Than Ready) (HK) - Exercised two laps on the small inner all-weather track under Tommy Berry.

Trainer John Moore said: “He appears to be over the lung issue. Obviously the lack of match fitness isn’t ideal, especially against a field as strong as this – I think this is one of the better Vase fields we’ve seen. He will gallop tomorrow (Thursday).”

Gold Mount (Excellent Art) (HK) - Jumped out of the stalls from the 400 metres on the all-weather track alongside Beauty Only (Vase), clocking 22.2s.

Trainer Tony Cruz said: “He’s fit and well and I hope he can run a place.”

Helene Charisma (Air Chief Marshal) (HK) - Cantered on the main all-weather track under race day rider Sam Clipperton.

Trainer John Moore said: “I wish we could work out what was going on in his mind, but at least he is well. He will also gallop tomorrow (Thursday).”

Highland Reel (Galileo) (IRE) - Led the Ballydoyle quintet in a regular canter on the all-weather track as he has done the past two days with regular rider Davy Bergin aboard. He completed his last 600 metres in 46.2s (16.6, 15.4, 14.2).

Aidan O’Brien’s travelling head lad Pat Keating said: “He’s in good form, as they all are. It’s possible that they’ll go on the turf on Thursday, I’ll wait to hear what the boss (O’Brien) decides.”

Kiseki (Rulership) (JPN) - Worked in the trotting ring before cantering for one and half laps around the Sha Tin all-weather.

The assistant trainer Norihiko Kishimoto said: “He is so relaxed and feels good. Mirco Demuro will gallop him on the turf tomorrow.”

Max Dynamite (Great Journey) (IRE) - Had an easy canter on the all-weather track after his sharp work-out on the turf yesterday.

David Casey, rider and assistant to trainer Willie Mullins, said: “He’s in good order. He’s so relaxed, he’s almost on the horizontal.”

Smart Call (Ideal World) (GB) - Worked at three-quarter pace on the turf this morning, running 600 metres in 40.4s (14.0, 13.2, 13.2).

Talismanic (Medaglia d’Oro) (FR) - While still being kept in low gear, he was asked for a

fraction more urgency by work-rider Vincent Champion, clocking a final 200 metres of 14.4s at the end of a 46.8s stretch over 600 metres. He then schooled in the parade ring. He will be ridden by 2014 Hong Kong Vase-winning jockey Maxime Guyon on Sunday.

Godolphin’s representative in France, Lisa-Jane Graffard, said: “He seems in good form and is really just his normal self. He is a good traveller with a good temperament and both Richard (Lambert, travelling head lad) and Vincent are really happy with him. He is following the same sort of programme as he did in America.”

Tiberian (Tiberius Caesar) (FR) - Returned to the all-weather on Wednesday following his Tuesday turf breeze.

Trainer Alain Couetil said: “He remains in good form and I have no reason to change his programme. Tactically he is very flexible, because he has won when making the running and also being held up.”

Tiberian arrives in Hong Kong off the back of a seventh-placed effort in the Melbourne Cup, a challenge which was compromised by being handed a very wide draw at Flemington. “With 11 or 12 runners there won’t be any issue with the draw here and at least he can’t get stall 23 this time!” said Couetil.

Tosen Basil (Harbinger) (JPN) - Cantered one and a half laps around the Sha Tin all-weather track.

Assistant trainer Kazuo Fujiwara said: “He is in great condition. He’ll breeze tomorrow with Joao Moreira aboard.”

Analysis: I’m Wesley took his winning sequence of six with a good performance in scoring here. He began well, settled nicely in third place on the rails, enjoying a nice trip behind a good tempo before moving up on turning for home. He got to the front at the 100m and went on to win well, his 11th in 27 starts and his second at stakes level. Hellova Street returned to Tasmania after his recent successful trip to Melbourne and went to the front as expected, but he was then pressured by his Scott Brunton-trained stablemate (Box Of Frogs). He lifted gamely when then challenged by the eventual winner on straightening and then fought well for second after working in the early stages. Gee Gees Top Notch raced back in fifth place, one of the rails. She improved (under riding) nearing the home turn and then battled on well to take the minor placing.

MORE THAN READYTop 10 Sire by SW’ers of all time

Analysis: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Chain Of Fools looks a promising staying three-year-old filly following her easy win in a maiden (1600m) at Goulburn on 26 November with another decisive win here. She settled nicely outside the leader (Radiant Choice) in the small field, got the better of that runner at the 200m and then went on to win easily, handling the Heavy 9 track well.

Analysis: Chris Waller-trained colt Scream Park followed his first up third in a 3yo maiden (1250m) on 22 November when having his second race start, to score a good win here. He was smartly away, went straight to the front before going deeper (looking for better going) rounding the home turn. He then fought back when challenged and went on to win comfortably.

Analysis: Danny O’Brien-trained three-year-old filly Crimson And Clover staged a good performance in winning here, advancing to 1600m at her first race start. Advancing to 1600m, she began well and was handily placed but caught wide without cover. She moved up (deep) at the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then finished a bit too well to score in a solid effort.
