This year may mark the silver anniversary of the iconic fighting franchise Mortal Kombat, but Netherrealm studios decided to grace us with

something a little different: Injustice 2, the follow-up to 2013’s acclaimed Injustice: Gods Among Us. Netherrealm assembled DC’s finest to duke it

out in one of the best modern fighting games in recent years.

Injustice 2 is the video game equivalent of gathering together all your favorite superhero action figures and making them fight. After the atrocity

that was the crossover fighting game Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe in 2007, Injustice 2 proves once and for all that both the Mortal Kombat

Universe and DC Universe fighting game franchises are much better kept as separate entities.

With a dynamic cast of characters, there’s something for every type of player. The roster includes the staple heroes of the DC Universe, such as

Batman, Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern, and, of course, everyone’s favorite nefarious villains like The Joker, Harley

Quinn, and Poison Ivy. There are also a number of new additions to the roster featuring lesser-known DC characters, including Firestorm, Doctor

Fate, Captain Cold, and Cheetah.

Choose your fighter!

Anyone who’s ever played Mortal Kombat X will fully recognize that Injustice 2 adopts the same gameplay formula. The super meter, special

attacks, and combat mechanics all return from Netherrealm’s previous entry. The game’s Tutorial mode provides an easy to follow introduction to

the game’s basic mechanics. It’s perfect for people who are just dipping their toes into the realm of fighting games for the very first time. Basic

combos are easy to execute but do take a lot of practice to pull of reliably. Timing is the name of the game when it comes to attacking opponents.

Just like its predecessor, Injustice 2 has an immersive single-player story. The plot is a continuation from the previous story in Injustice: Gods

Among Us, in which Superman is imprisoned as Batman and co. (Harley Quinn, Blue Beetle, Firestorm, and Green Lantern) try to protect the

Earth from the sieging Brainiac.

Whilst the story doesn’t offer anything deep in terms of narrative, it proves to be a great way to practice with various characters, learn special

combos, and generally hone skill and technique before you battle online. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of the Injustice: Gods

Among Us story to be able to follow along either. And the cutscenes are undeniably stunning, with brilliant dialogue and outstanding performances

from its voice actors (featuring legendary Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy and veteran voice actor Tara Strong as Harley Quinn) that really

showcase the characters’ personalities and relationships.

My, what a lovely face you have

One of the most interesting new features of story mode is the option to choose one of two characters to use for each level. There are also some

choices to be made within the story that alter the ending of the game. That’s right; Injustice 2 has two drastically different endings. The choices you

make and the characters you play will directly effect how the game plays out. It’s up to you to pick which side you fight on.

Aside from the Story Mode, there’s lots of extra content to be enjoyed. This includes a new gear system, which allows players to level up their

characters and customize them with stat-adjusting accessories to help in battle. If you’re brand new and starting out for the first time, the gear

system can be very confusing and difficult to grasp. There’s not much help from the game either.

Injustice 2 also introduces a brand new single player mode called the Multiverse, similar to the Living Towers in Mortal Kombat X, that allows

players to take part in daily tower challenges for rewards. Playing through the Multiverse mode allows you acquire loot boxes experience points,

and coins that can be used to upgrade your characters. You can also take these rewards online in your multiplayer battles. What’s great about

the whole Multiverse mode is that it offers extra appeal and longevity to the game, and gives players a reason to keep coming back.

Choose your…planet?

Injustice 2 really delivers in terms of aesthetics, particularly with its brilliantly designed levels. These include iconic settings from the DC Universe,

immediately recognizable to comic book fans, such as Gotham City, Atlantis, Metropolis, and Arkham Asylum – all of which really come to life with

the interactive objects and stage transitions. During battle, players are also able to initiate a clash in which players can gamble on their super

meter bar to either inflict greater damage or regenerate their health bar.

Also making its return to the game are the Super Moves, the cinematic special attacks for each character. These are essentially a less gruesome

combination of Mortal Kombat’s fatalities and X-ray moves. They do require a full super meter so you better make sure you don’t miss!

These Super Moves consist of heavily damaging special move where you take a brief break from the fighting to witness a cinematic sequence of

your character pummeling your opponent, often in hilarious and/or insane ways. It’s a nice addition to gameplay that proves that the game doesn’t

take itself too seriously. So, if you’ve ever wanted to see the Man of Steel himself fly into the blue sky, deal a series of blows to his opponent among

a bed of clouds, and quite literally bring them back down to earth, here’s your golden opportunity.

Take ’em down!

Injustice 2 showcases its characters brilliantly with their unique set of skills, abilities, and powers. They all offer something different in terms of ways

to play. The attention to detail is extremely meticulous both in game and in cutscenes. Character models are stunning to look at, from facial

animations to the stitching on their clothes. Netherrealm also brought back unique pre-match dialogue between characters, a feature introduced

in Mortal Kombat X, showing off Netherrealm’s signature brand of sardonic, tongue-in-cheek humor.

Overall, Netherrealm has done it again and blessed us with another brilliant fighting game. If you want a fighting game to keep you engaged, then

look no further than Injustice 2. It’s a visually appealing treat with highly addictive gameplay that’s a huge step up from its predecessor. It doesn’t

matter whether you’re a tournament player or a casual player; the game offers a lot of variety with its different modes and non-stop entertainment.

Injustice 2 is a game for comic book fans and fighting game connoisseurs alike. This is even a game perfect for newcomers to the fighting genre.

So prepare to get your geek on and immerse yourself into the world of Injustice 2!
