When the Smithsonian Institution was founded in 1846, both the Act of Congress and the newly formed Board of Regents called for “the gradual formation of a library” that was to be at the heart of enterprise. They knew that without a library to document and provide context for scientifi c specimens and museum objects, the collections would be of little value. That vision has resulted in a network of libraries, an extensive collection of 2 million volumes, a treasure house of rare volumes and manuscripts, a multitude of digital databases and over 100 expert staff that supply the Institution’s knowledge foundation and serve a global audience. We are the largest museum and research library system in the world. With its wealth of knowledge, the Smithsonian Libraries feeds the mission of the Smithsonian to spark discovery and inspire lifelong learning, tell America’s story and reach people everywhere. Library experts focus on science, history, culture and the arts to assist the Smithsonian’s curatorial and research staff, as well as their peers around the world. Our imprint is on everything that comes out of the Smithsonian. The Libraries also serves a broader audience – students, researchers, and other members of the public who are on a quest for knowledge. All benefi t from the Smithsonian Libraries’ combination of exceptional, priceless resources and expertise.
We must preserve our treasures--whether a letter in Galileo’s own hand, the fi rst hand-colored illustrations of the fl ora and fauna of North America, or an artist’s book made out of lead – to provide future generations with the knowledge and icons of the past. At the same time, we must meet the demands of today’s students for digital information at their fi ngertips on iPads and mobile devices.
The demands on the Libraries to collect, preserve, share and educate are continually increasing, but the public resources available to support the system are not keeping pace. They are inadequate to preserve America’s heritage and create a 21st century library that operates comfortably in the digital world.
This reality requires commitment and generosity from those who wish to ensure that this American treasure remains a strong and indispensable resource for future generations. We need the help of those who value the work of the Libraries in forwarding the pursuit of knowledge and the preservation of our heritage.
We thank you for your continued support, which will bear lasting and positive dividends for generations to come.

2012 ADVISORY BOARD
Insight for partnership from one of our Board members, Linda Gooden, created a corporate friendship that benefi ts the Libraries’ technology education and outreach efforts.
Together with a Creative & Strategic Services team from Lockheed Martin, the Libraries produced a two-minute long video about our work featuring staff, spaces and collections. We were thrilled to hear that the video collaboration resulted in a 2011 Emmy Award for Graphic Arts from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Additionally, a $50,000 grant from Lockheed Martin provided the funding to create The Smithsonian Libraries Air & Space Digital Outreach & Education Program. This program will provide a cohesive body of high school-level material related to aviation, aeronautics and related engineering topics to a global audience. Currently, these resources, located across the Smithsonian Libraries collections, reside in the public domain and are out of copyright, or are materials that the Smithsonian Libraries has received permission to republish for educational purposes. The program will make these resources available in digital format in a variety of platforms, primarily iTunesU, but may also include ePals, and the Smithsonian’s own websites.
Longstanding friends and supporters of the Smithsonian Institution, Augustus “Gus” Miller, and his wife, Deanne Miller, have made a gift valued at $1 million to the Smithsonian Libraries.
The gift provides $350,000 for new acquisitions in the American Experience for the Libraries, named The Augustus and Deanne Miller Acquisitions Fund in recognition of their generosity. The donors also made a planned gift which establishes an endowment for the Libraries for the same purpose, so that their gift, in total, is $1 million.
The Smithsonian interprets the American Experience through its museums and research centers, encouraging creative approaches to documenting and collecting for the historic and contemporary accomplishments and creativity of the American people, and inspiring a broader public awareness of American life and national identity, cultural expression, the environment and changing landscape, and achievements in science and technology.
The Miller’s generosity has built momentum for the Libraries’ fundraising priorities which include strengthening and expanding access to collections, building support for exhibitions, and establishing fellowships.
Gus Miller is Chairman and CEO of Miller Oil Company, a privately-held and family-operated business that he founded in 1977 following the purchase of Exxon’s home heating oil business. He is a collector of Western art and rare books, and an alumnus of the Smithsonian Institution National Board, on which he served from 2001-2006. He currently is Vice Chair of the Smithsonian Libraries Advisory Board. Mr. and Mrs. Miller are former Smithsonian American Art Museum Director’s Circle members, and they have previously made philanthropic gifts to the Libraries and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
