    Mayor emphasizeseconomic development

In a story carried in theLincoln News Messenger on

Dec. 8, Short pointed toeconomic development asbeing important for both

sales tax and job creation. Iasked him for morespecifics regarding his views

on how he plans to encour-age economic expansion.Short pointed to business-to-business growth as a new

focus, meaning he and oth-er city staff will ask Lincolnbusiness owners to activelypromote Lincoln as a busi-ness site for the suppliers

    with whom they do busi-ness.

The mayor pointed tosome of the new businessesthat have recently openedin Lincoln as evidence thatbusiness interest in Lincolnis growing.

business owners I inter-viewed in 2011 for theiroutlook for 2012.

Book Cellar owner Deb-by Swindlar finds business

opportunities in 2012exciting.From her perspective at

the gateway to downtownLincoln, she sees changestarting to take place inLincoln as several newarrivals are becomingclients.

Placer Pond and WaterGarden owners Debra andGary Sanford at 150 G St.are optimistic for 2012 as

they look for space toexpand their store. According to co-ownerGary Sanford, 2012 will bea time for his company torededicate our services toour community.

Providing maintenanceservicing to customers inthe Sun City Lincoln Hillssubdivision has been abusiness mainstay accord-ing to Sanford, but in 2012,they will look to expandtheir services to thenumerous farms andranches that dot the Lin-coln landscape.

Most have ponds usedfor agriculture and thusrequire maintenance. San-ford wants to fill that need.Theyll also be buildingsome new ponds as theynow have a California

State contractors licenseallowing them to do so. A beaming Marcus

DeSalles, manager of theSafeway store in the Lin-coln Hills Towne Center, told me the 2012 outlookis positive as he rushed tohandle the holiday flow ofcustomers.

Gonzalo Alejandre, co-owner of Panaderia LaMichoacana at 616 5th St.

in downtown Lincoln, echoed similar sentimentsin the midst of his holidaycustomer rush.

Notes of CautionBut not every business

    owner sees 2012 in a posi-tive light.

Polly Brown, co-ownerof PJs Mail & Parcel Serv-ice, saw her holiday cus-tomer traffic in 2011 at

about the same level as in2010.Im hoping for a better

year, she said, but thenwent on to describe howher customers increasingInternet usage is threat-ening business growth.

She pointed to some ofthe well publicized finan-cial problems the U.S.Postal Service is having tounderscore her point.

    Notes of promiseLincoln entrepreneur

Mina Reid began 2011 with two beauty salonsand a coffee shop. She hassince closed the coffeehouse and one salon.

    She remains upbeat,

however, about herremaining salon at 1500Del Webb Blvd. in LincolnHills which she says isdoing well.

Reid also said she isexcited about 2012 and is

anticipating a good year. When asked to summa-

rize her thoughts on herbusiness careers rollercoaster ride over the pastseveral months, Reid said,I am not afraid of tomor-

row for I have seen yester-day and I love today.

Reids optimistic sum-mary seems to apply gen-erally to most of the corre-spondents with whom wevisited.

Iam a perpetual planner.I think of January as thePlanners Month. I will

try and plan out a goodportion of my year in Jan-

uary.So why not take thismonth to reflect on yourgarden and yard?

Reflect on what workedand what did not. Try andremember those yardchores that never werecompleted and make ityour goal to do it this year.

Think about thosetimes when you went by ahouse that had a beautiful

yard and you thought to yourself, I want to trythat next year.

If you plant a veggiegarden, having a goodplan of what and where you are going to plantyour veggies will help you

keep from over-planting. When you get some

garden catalogues, startmarking the plants youwould like to try and visityour local nursery to ask ifit is a good plant for yourspecific needs.

    The busy months of

pruning, fertilizing, weed-ing and planting are justaround the corner.

However, there are afew garden chores I wouldnot ignore this month. Ifwe continue to have a dry winter, then you should

make sure you water yourplants in the ground andin containers. (If we haverain at least once a week you will not need to do

any extra watering.)Also, this is the time tospray your dormantsprays to help reduce dis-ease issues in the springas well as some insectissues. Spray cooper sprayto eliminate peach leafcurl and you can also useit on any roses that usual-ly get black spot.

Spay All Season Oil tokill off any over-wintering

larvae that may be hidingin bark and branches oftrees and bushes.

    Happy planning!

Most pet owners areaware of the advan-tages of vaccinating

their dogs and cats to pre-

vent common diseases.Core vaccines for dogsinclude rabies, a distem-per-parvovirus combina-tion (DHPP or DAP) andkennel cough vaccines.

For cats, most veteri-narians recommendrabies, feline rhinotra-cheitis-panleukopenia-calicivirus combination(FVRCP) and felineleukemia vaccines.

Any additional vaccinerecommendations forpets are based on expo-sure and lifestyle choices.

For dogs, these mayinclude Leptospirosis,Lyme or rattlesnake vac-cines. This is a highly con-

    troversial vaccine in theveterinary circle.

Red Rocks Biologicsproduces the vaccine fordogs and horses. It hasconducted limited effica-cy studies to back up theirclaims, due to the cost ofconducting such studies

and the ethical dilemmainvolved with defining anumber of the variables todetermine efficacy. Mostinformation regarding thesuccess of the vaccine isanecdotal from owners ofpets that have been bitten

    and veterinarians in thefield.

The age of the snake(young snakes release

higher doses of venom intheir bites) and amount ofvenom that the petreceives are importantfactors in determining thevaccines effectiveness.

The location of the bite, the individual dogsimmune system and thetime since the last boosteralso affects the vaccineseffectiveness.

    Red Rocks research

indicates that the vaccinedelivers good protectionfor about six months afterboostering.

Initial vaccination isrecommended in Febru-ary, with a booster givenfour weeks later.

Yearly boosters (onedose) are then given everyMarch to cover the rat-tlesnake season in thisarea.

Southern California hasa prolonged snake seasonand veterinarians will

usually booster exposedpets again in the fall. The vaccine is licensed

to protect against WesternDiamondback (Prairie,Great Basin, Northernand Southern Pacific vari-eties), Sidewinder, TimberRattlesnake, Massasaugaand the Copperheads.

It is safe to use in preg-nant and lactating dogs, puppies as young as 4-

months-old and olderdogs. Side effects includemild swelling at the injec-tion site (in less than 1percent) and will resolvein three weeks. In rarecases, there can be vomit-ing, diarrhea or lethargythat can last up to one totwo days.

Traditional vaccinereactions are extremelyrare and are estimated to

occur at between one andthree cases per million.

Even with vaccination,a snake bite is an emer-gency. If your pet hasbeen bitten, she/heshould be taken to yourlocal veterinarian for eval-uation. At that point, additional treatments willbe discussed based onsize of pet, location of

bite, and symptoms. Rat-tlesnake bites are deadly. Vaccinations can lessen

the severity of the symp-toms and have beenknown to decrease therecovery period.

If your pet has alreadybeen bitten in the past, they can be effectivelyvaccinated after waiting

six weeks to allow for fullrecovery.Have a discussion in

January with your veteri-narian to determine ifvaccinating your pet isappropriate. Rattlesnakeseason will soon be uponus!

Personal financialplanning is a dynamicprocess, one that nev-

er ends. But experiencesuggests that most U.S.

taxpayers do not have aformal, written plan.Instead, they struggle

with a plethora of finan-cial statements issued bytheir employers, financialinstitutions, the InternalRevenue Service and theCalifornia Franchise TaxBoard.

The data and informa-tion is too often not cap-tured and recorded in any

way that makes sense inachieving the financial

goals so necessary foryour individual or familyssuccess.

Think of yourself as asmall business becausebusiness financial princi-ples apply equally to indi-viduals and families.

So, you are a small busi-

ness. Do you have aspending plan for 2012?

Reports you will needCalculating your net

worth is simply determin-ing the differencebetween what you own

and what you owe at agiven point in time. Youget to that number by

writing a personal bal-ance sheet that captures

your assets and liabilities.Assets should include

the following: Cash on hand, in the

    bank and in money mar-kets

    Investments Real estate

Personal items such asjewelry and cars.

    Liabilities include thefollowing categories:

Credit card balances Other bills payable Mortgage balance Car loan(s)Subtract your liabilities

    from your assets to arrive

at your net worth. Thisshould be a positive num-ber. Increasing your net

worth over time is a rea-sonable goal.

Next perform a cash-flow analysis to measure

your cash inflow and out-flows to show your netcash position for a specif-ic point in time.

Start with a monthlyreport. Use December2011s bank statementsand bills as source docu-

ments. In your income section, include the following:

    Wages and commis-sions

    Pensions Dividends and inter-

    est Other money sources

    Under expenditures, youshould list:

Personal savings Rent or mortgage pay-

    ments

Car payments Utility bills Telephones, Internet

and cable TV Gas for vehicles Insurance Tax set-asides

    Combine the tools,create a budget

With these two reports, youll have a reasonablefoundation to begindeveloping your annualspending plan, alsoknown as a budget.

Most of your spendingplan is going to be basedon your cash flows so thatreport is critical.

Where they differ is thatone is a report of incomeand spending activity that

has already taken placeand the other the budg-et is a plan for thefuture.

While their form maybe similar, your budgetmay include more detailregarding goals and

objectives while provid-ing rationale and justifi-cations for any incomeand spending issues youplan to encounter.

As you gather data toprepare your taxes for

2011, this is a perfect timeto transfer some of thatdata onto your personalbalance sheets and cashflow reports while prepar-ing your basic personalfinancial plan for 2012.

    If you have a more

complicated financial life, your complete plan mayinclude separate folios forrisk management andinsurance, tax and estateplanning plus investmentplanning and execution.

Day tripping haslong been a pas-sion of mine.

Even when my childrenwere young and we livedin Montana, we wouldpack them up and head tothe mountains for a day ofhiking or exploring.

I have only lived in theregion a few months and Ilove being in an area thathas four seasons. Its beena while since that has

happened and it gives meso many opportunities toexplore, hike and take pic-tures all year round.

This is the perfect areato explore and the possi-bilities are endless. For meits a lot more fun to take

multiple trips, either for aday or weekend, than takeone or two longer vaca-tions over a year.

I go somewhere every weekend and the direc-tion or location usuallydepends on the weather.

We are also uniquelylocated between theocean and the mountains

with literally hundreds ofthings to do and places tosee.

This time of the year asthe snow starts falling in

the mountains and the fogcovers the ocean, there arestill many shorter tripspeople can enjoy. Onesuch place is the Califor-nia State Railroad Muse-um complex located with-in the Old Sacramento

State Historic Park. Thefascinating history of theregion and the CaliforniaGold Rush is laid out andthe walk through charm-ing Old Town is a perfectafternoon outing.

If you like history youwill get plenty of it at theRailroad Museum. Newsof the 1848 discovery ofgold in nearby Colomatraveled quickly aroundthe world drawing thou-sands of people to theSierra Nevada foothills.

Sacramento sits at theconfluence of the Sacra-mento and AmericanRivers. It soon became thecommercial center of theGold Rush as it was thecrossroads of transporta-tion, connected by steam-

boats to San Francisco, bysupply roads to miningregions and to Folsom bythe first railroad in the

    west. Despite floods, fires

and epidemics, Sacra-mento became Califor-nias capital in 1854.

and most popular rail-road museum, the Cali-fornia State RailroadMuseum houses morethan 20 restored locomo-
