This Holy Week, most Filipinos observe the passion of Christ as He was crucified and rose from the dead. In predominantly Roman Catholic Philippines, the morning of Easter (known as "Pasko ng Muling Pagkabuhay" or the Pasch of the Resurrection) is marked with joyous celebra-tion, the first being the dawn "Salubong", wherein large statues of Jesus and Mary are brought together to meet, imagining the first reunion of Jesus and his mother Mary after Jesus' Resurrection. This is followed by the joyous

Easter Mass. The New Testament teaches that the resurrection of Jesus, which Easter celebrates, is a foundation of the Christian faith. The resurrection established Jesus as the powerful Son of God and is cited as proof that God will judge the world in righteousness. God has given Chris-tians "a new birth into a living hope through the resurrec-tion of Jesus Christ from the dead". Christians, through faith in the working of God are spiritually resurrected with Jesus so that they may walk in a new way of life. This year, Holy Week has taken a special meaning as we celebrate the election of the new pope, the new leader of the Catholic Church. He leads with humility and service to the poor. Habemus Papam! Pope Francis I is the first Jesuit and the first Latin American to be elected pontiff. But in these early days, Catholics are divided over how big a change Francis represents for the church. Four-in-ten Catholics say the se-lection of Pope Francis represents a “major change,” while a roughly equal number see his selection as “only a minor change” for the church. When asked about a list of possible priorities for the new pope, seven-in-ten Catholics say that addressing the

sex abuse scandal should be "a top priority" for Francis. U.S. Catholics as a whole attach less importance to other possible priorities on the list. But among Catholics who say they at-tend Mass at least once a week, roughly equal numbers cite “standing up for tradi-tional moral values” and “addressing the sex abuse scandal” as top priorities for the new pope. By contrast, among Catholics overall 49% say that standing up for traditional moral values should be "a top priority" for Pope Francis. Roughly four-in-ten Catholics or fewer think that spreading the Catholic faith, addressing the priest shortage and reforming the Vatican bureaucracy should be top priorities for the new pope. One thing is quite clear about the election of Jorge Bergoglio as the Pope: the Church has opted for a rele-vant change in the profile of its shepherd. Beyond the fact that the traditional labels of conservative and progressive seem currently a bit outdated to describe the church rep-resentatives, truth be said that the Argentine Pope arrives to St. Peter´s chair after two Popes who oscillated be-tween a conservative and a very conservative one. We can say that the attention to the poor has always been not only the mark of the current pope’s organization of the Church and pastoral action, but also of his own way of life. Now everyone is beginning to discover that he used public transportation and that he cooked for himself. But prior to this it wasn’t ‘news’; it was his everyday way of life. We might say that he chose a Franciscan way of life before he chose the name Francis. It is said that Providence always sends us the right pope

for the right time. Benedict XVI, with his meek yet firm style, by standing against relativism as a philosophical and ethical vision. Francis is the first Latin-American pope, and in this people perceive a message of

great newness, which is also tied to his experience of shar-ing life with the poor. The Church is mater et magistra – mother and teacher. Perhaps before she was more a ‘teacher’, and now she is more a ‘mother’. The message does not change; it’s the Gospel, but is articulated in a different ways, both in tone and style. Two Popes; a first in hundreds of years Our generation is blessed with a lot of firsts, in science, technology, now, in our spirituality. It is refreshing, and hopefully would lead us to renew our faith with stronger conviction. The Church has affirmed its new beginnings in this Easter season, its rebirth. Are we posed to do the same?

The APPOF (Assn. of Philippine Physicians of Ohio Foundation), along with some PNAOhio nurse volunteers, brought its annual medical-surgical mission to Olongapo City this year. The missionaries served the people of the so called “Sin City” in the 1960’s and 70’s to what has become the “Model City” in the ‘80’s and 90’s up to present time. Our mission team, comprised of 16 sur-geons,17 medical MDs, 9 anesthesiologists, 1 pathologist, 18 RNs, 5 med. techs and 27 volunteers, was hosted by the city Mayor, James Gordon, Jr. and his wife Anne. We travelled from Manila to Olongapo in two busses provided by the Mayor in the AM of Feb. 3. As election in PI is looming – I unfor-tunately belonged to the group riding a bus covered with political posters from top to bottom, front and back. So much about doing sight-seeing of the countryside! We arrived there at noon on Sunday and the surgical group visited the hospital. Dr. Mendoza, the Director of James L. Gordon Hospital, and his staff gave us a warm welcome. The medical group did sorting of all the drugs we brought there with us. This mission, it turned out, was the most organized collaboration with the locals I’ve seen. Our mission led by the PNAOF Pres., Dr. Jessica Jandi, Chair-man, Dr. Armando Damian, and Over-all Coordinator,Dr. Menchie Damian, did a great job once again! Dr. Men-doza mobilized teams within the hospital to assist us in every way they can. The outcome was wonderful as none of the previous “glitches” in previous missions were encoun-tered. Surgeries went smoothly with Pina, our PNAO Presi-dent, and Maryann (assisting her hubby who’s a plastic surgeon) working in the OR. I worked in the PACU with 3 other RNs… we developed a very friendly working rela-tionship with the PACU local staff and “nurse volunteers”. My heart went out to these “nurse volunteers” I tell you! I always made sure they got their meals and meriendas as they don’t get any compensation for working there… some have been doing it for a few years! What a sad travesty but this is another “controversial” topic to discuss at another time! There were 4 RNs who assisted the surgeons doing minor surgeries in the OPD. The other RNs worked in the supply room and pharmacy. The medical group (OPD, minor surgery and dental team) saw hundreds of patients in the OPD and alsospent a day seeing patients in San Antonio, Zambales upon the invitation of Mayor Estela Antipolo who happens to be an MD too.The mission ended on Feb. 8, Friday, with everyone fulfilling what they intended to do… to serve and make a difference in the lives of our poor kababayans. The mission

did 95 major surgeries, 194 minor surgeries, 362 dental cases and 593 ophthalmology cataract screenings. The medical group saw a total of 3,000 patients. Lots of unused supplies were donated to the hospital at the end of our mission. The unpretentious kindness and friendliness of the people of Olongapo City made very positive impressions on me. From the staff of the Court Meridian Hotel where

we stayed to everyone in the hospital start-ing with Dr. Mendoza… their hospitality was palpable throughout our stay! For this – we say “maramimg, maraming salamat”! I believe we made a positive impression on them too as Dr. Mendoza said that “we were the most hard working medical missionaries he had seen”. I also want to mention that the James Gordon Hospital, like the rest of the city, made a great impression with its cleanli-

ness… I haven’t seen a government/city hospital with such shiny floors before! In closing – I’d like to thank APPOF profusely for always welcoming the PNAO members joining the missions. Our spirit of bayanihan is sure alive and well…we look forward to working with you in the years to come. May God make this possible by keeping us all healthy, strong and of sound minds so that we may serve those in need much longer. Photos on next page

Last January 31, 2013, I was tasked by Presi-dent Vicky to collaborate and schedule a face-

to-face meeting with our Philippine co-convenors, PNA, ADPCN and ANSAP. My gratitude to Erlinda Ortin, International Education Chair, through her “connections” got us connected and scheduled the date for the meeting at the PNA home office. In attendance were PNA President Noel Cadete, ADPCN President Elizabeth Roxas, Dean Carmelita Divinagracia, Dean Glenda Vargas, Cecille Laurente, Erlinda Palaganas, PNA Executive Director Leonardo Nuestro, Jr., Maristela Abenojar, Rhoda Reyes, Lenie Nolasco, and Gerelyn Reboroso. From the U.S. delagates are Linda Ortin, Remy Solarte, Nancy Hoff and myself. With much pride but humbled to report, that the collaboration was well done and successful with the support and acceptance from all convenors. Their committed engage-ment concerning logistics, conference structure and venue facilitated the crafting of the MOU to be signed by President of PNAA, PNA, ADPCN and ANSAP. The convention theme, “Solidarity for Global Health and Sustainable Social Action,”

Last March 9, 2013 the new set of officers of PNA Illinois were inducted during their 56th Anniversary celebration with a formal luncheon and dance. This special event was held at The Mirage-Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Schiller Park, Illinois. It was attended by PNA Illinois members, their families, friends, civic leaders and nursing colleagues from other NCR chapters. Sofy Bole repre-sented PNA Michigan; Bong Dayon, NCR COP came from

of the event was the induction of the elected PNA Illinois officers for the term 2013-2015. Deputy Consul General Orontes Castro delivered a short speech before they were sworn in to office. He resonated the message of Consul General Leo M. Herrera-Lim who commended all PNA Illinois nurses for keeping alive the tradition of gathering together to celebrate friendship and solidarity and for organizing collective resources for the benefit of our “Kababayans” and our motherland. He also congratulated

them for all their accomplishments as a professional organization in Illinois. This occasion not only high-lighted the inauguration of the new set of officers but also marked the 56th

year celebration and unification of PNA Illinois. PNA Illinois is one of the original 5 chapters of PNAA. The other 4 were PNA Jersey, PNA New York, PNA Michigan and PNA South California. Three of our past national presidents or AC came from PNA Illinois namely, Clarita Miraflor, Emma Nemivant and Marie Couper. Perseverance, fortitude and determination of past officers and advisors of this chapter to pass on a half century old legacy made this day more meaningful and memorable. I am proud to announce that the newly installed set of officers for the term 2012-2014 have been working diligently to meet the goals of their assigned committees so that we may attain our mission and goals set forth by our constitution and bylaws.

We have seen a flurry of activities during the last six months of the year 2012. After the last project with the Asian Center of Southeast Michigan namely the Asian Food and Health Expo in August, it was time to generate revenues for our chapter as well as for the Philippine Nurses Association of America Foundation (PNAAF). The volunteers for the Asian Food Expo received some grant money for actively working on this project.

On behalf of the Philippine Nurses Association of Michigan I would like to extend my warmest and heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support of our donors, sponsors, friends , colleagues and golfers so that the Golf Fundraising on September 22, 2012 may generate enough income to make PNAM a Platinum donor for the Founding Members Initiative ( FMI ) of the PNAAF. Half of the proceeds went to the PNAAF as a project of Annie Vista, PNAAF Executive Director and the other half went to PNAM’s contribution to FMI. Most of the PNAM’s share will remain with the PNAM for future projects and initia-tives. My appreciation and thanks go to the following sponsors of the golf holes: Dr. Rosemary Aquiler- Angeles and Ferdinand Angeles, Drs. Clarina Pascual and Candy Catapang, Philippine Medical Association of MI (PMAM ), Kiel’s Tai Kwon Do of Jack and Hilda Kittinger, Dr. Sonia Fernando and Terry Brown, Benjamin and Anne Marie Garvin of Global Home Care Inc., Community Af-fairs Associatr. Bernie and Emma Pacris, Sergio and Ellen Dioso, Denis and Annie Vista, Maria Salud, Dr. Diane Deck and Michael Deck of Global Reliance Associ-ates , Drs. Ascencion and Jimmy Calaguas, Drs. Edgar and Evelyn Altares, Drs. David and Ethel Villanueva, Danilo and Maria V. Nery-Sureta, Dr. Herminio and Er-linda Calderon, Jeff and Gloria Agnes Waltz of Retire-ment Investment Services, Pat Torrico, Randal Klee and AXA Equitable, the PNAM Executive Board members who shared the holes, Remedios Solarte, Carmen Perez, Re-mylin Bruder, Connie Sumalde, Teresita Covacha, Corazon Gabarda, Reglita Laput, Regina Mupas, Remy Doctor, Sally Pablo, Ninfa Lantz- Tan and Tita Salvani.

PNAM President’s Message

The PNAM supported the Bicol Association, NAFFAA, PMAM, The Filipino Star News, FILAMCCO, APIA Vote and Kahirup by giving these organizations ads, plus several PNAM members attended their activities. PNAM also gave donation of $125.00 to the Philippine Medical Association of Michigan for their Golf Fundraising the proceeds of which were earmarked for their Medical Mission. The PNAM sent donation to the victims of Typhoon Sendong in the Philippines through the Kababayan Emergency Prepar-edness Fund ( KEPF ) of the Philippine Nurses Association of America ( PNAA ).

The summer picnic on August 22 was an event to remember for not having the lechon but instead slabs of ribs and roasted chicken saved the day, thanks to the persistence of Rem Mandap in making the vendor responsible for not ful-filling the order. Although the picnic was meant to be a fun filled occasion, we took the opportunity to raise funds by holding a raffle event and food sales. The General Assem-bly Meeting was also held at this venue. We had the picnic at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Warren with Fe San Agustin’s help. Thanks to you Fe.

Several members of PNAM attended the free Educational Conference on Stroke Symposium at Crittenton Hospital on September 15, 2012. PNAM members are encouraged to attend these seminars offered by different organizations

On December 15, 2012, PNAM was bestowed an Excel-lence Award by the Filipino American Community Council of Michigan ( FILAMCCO ) during the Rizal Day Cele-bration for its outstanding contributions to the commu-nity. The event at Petruzzelo’s Banquet and Conference Center was a tribute to the Philippine Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. The PNAM President Emma de Leon- Pacris and members took center stage to accept the plaque.

The citrus fruits fundraising culminated on November 12, 2012 and the bowling event on November 17, 2012 which generated a sizable sum for our financial viability. I am commending the chairs of these committees namely

Teresita Covacha, Sonia Mawilai, Concepcion Sumalde and Carmen Perez for a job well done. Executive Board members volunteered and donated prizes. Thank you to Ryan Rosario, FILAMCCO President and Willie Dechavez, NAFFAA Michigan Chair who came to support our fundraising.

The Christmas party held on December 7, at The Fuji Restaurant was a success. Thanks to Trinie Alair and Leonor Mandap for coordinating the exchange gift/pollyana and registration and Nina McCauley for arranging the venue. There was sumptuous food and the exchange gift was exciting. After the General Assembly Meeting, a community singing of Christmas carols and a sur-prise number gave the event a meaningful gath-ering of members for camaraderie, solidarity and posterity among friends and relatives enjoy-ing the spirit of Christmas. My appreciation goes to Becky Tungol and Tony Kho for leading the community singing.

PNAM participated at the Rizal Day cele-bration on December 15, 2012 held at Petruzzelo’s in Troy, Michigan. It received an Excellence Award for its outstanding community outreach projects and its commit-ment in fostering the welfare of its constituent members and services to the healthcare community. I take this opportunity to congratulate the Executive Board mem-bers for their commitment to serve this organization. Thank you to the members and friends who came to sup-port the PNAM table, Leonor and Rem Mandap, Evange-los and Mary Roselie Koutsavdis, Trinie and Romy Alair, Offie and Ed Neate, Dr. Olan and Linda Jareunpoon, Vicky and Joe Atillo.

PNAM continues to maintain its visibility, viability, and vitality by actively advocating for its membership engagement, member recruitment, community partner-ship, education, practice and research. Recognition of its member accomplishment and awards provide a sense of inclusiveness and support for professional development. Thank you to all the committees for striving hard pro-moting our goals and mission as an official professional organization. Congratulations to the new members of

the Newsletter Committee, Maria Wolfinbarger, incoming Editor-in-Chief, Valerie Grobbel, Leonor Mandap, and Amy Risvold, Advisor, who is presently the Acting Editor-in-Chief. Thank you for your commitment and loyalty to PNAM. I would like to recognize the members of the Execu-tive Board for all your efforts, time and resources in per-forming your assigned responsibilities above and beyond what your role calls for. Thanks to Martha Cabarios for accepting the Treasurer role. Thank you to Remedios So-larte for the mentoring of Ninfa Lantz- Tan in her role as Education Committee Chair. Thank you to Grace Ramirez, Agnes Rayos- Rabino and Carmencita Ford-Fleifel for joining the Education committee.

On behalf of the Executive Board I would like to extend my best wishes for a joyous holiday season. This has been a tumultuous year and I am hopeful as we enter 2013 that great things be ahead. We wish the best for our membership, sponsors, family and friends. Young Hearts By: Manny Ramos, MSN, RN Chairman, Education Committee PNACF, Board of Directors

Have you tried teaching elementary kids lately? If you haven’t, try it sometime and you may be in for pleasant surprises. That was how the PNA of Central Florida (PNACF) members felt when they taught “Healthy Kids” to the students at Killarney Elementary School in Winter Park, Florida last February 22nd. PNACF was invited by Gigi de Jesus Kidary, the newest member of PNACF, to participate in her Killarney Health Heroes Program, a grant funded project to enhance learning about health and wellness with focus on prevention of childhood obesity. The program was funded by the United Health Heroes Grant. PNACF was glad to reach out to the younger population of the community, an infrequent opportunity that the organization eagerly embraced. This community outreach was very fitting to the observance of American Heart Month in February.

Page 12

Manny Ramos, Ofelia Manaoat, and Ghie Alagano of PNACF were welcomed at the school by Coach Z, the Physical Education teacher at Killarney. The PNACF team was led to the outdoor covered arena where they taught “Healthy Kids” during each class period to students from K to 5. “I was surprised at how attentive and engaged the students were, especially the Kindergarten and first grade kids!” remarked Ghie, Executive director of PNACF. Indeed, the students were very active participants in the discussions and learning activities that day. There were lively discus-sions amongst the students about different kinds of fruits and vegetables that they need to include in their diet. The students came up with numerous examples of different fruits and vegetables categorized by color except when it came to blue, for which the only response was blueberries! Is there any other? Young Hearts (Continued)

The students learned to compare their resting heart rate from their active heart rate, which the latter the students counted after running three laps around the court. The students were engaged in the discussion about staying healthy by engaging in sports, playing games, or exercise for at least one hour per day. Ofelia, an ICU nurse and the Corresponding Secretary of PNACF, referred to as Miss O by the students, was very patient in assisting the kids learn how to locate their radial pulses, count their pulses for 15 seconds, and multiply it by 4 to get a pulse rate. Miss O, Ghie, and Manny had their hands full when it was time to help the kids listen to their apical pulse using stethoscopes lent by Valencia College. Manny, who teaches Nursing at Valencia College, had to quickly adjust his teaching strategies to suit the much younger learners. Nonetheless, he had fun facilitating the learning activities such as “Bloodflow thru the Tubes”, a relay comparing blood circulation through healthy and narrowed blood vessels; “d’ Cup over – flows”, a discus-sion of better food choices and what happens to excess calories; “Pump Your Fist”, a simulation of how the heart is at constant work and the importance of exercise to maintaining health. It was a fulfilling day for the PNACF members and they realized that it is as much fun and challenging to teach kids as it is to teach adults. PNACF appreciated the opportunity to participate in preventive health teachings, especially to the young hearts! Now, if only they would eat more veggies…

She invited the mem-bers to renew their membership and for non- members to join. She announced the SCR Conference hosted by PNA Tampa Bay on May 3-4, 2013 and the PNAA National Conven-tion in Cleveland, Ohio on July 24-28, 2013. We recruited 2 new members and a few guest picked

up application forms. Guests were happy to bring home nice gift baskets they won in the raffles. Beautiful long stemmed roses were also available for sale for the gentle-men to give their dates. The guest enjoyed winning door prizes and the chocolate covered pretzels for give-aways. The guests danced while the President’s niece Marydin sang “Through the Years.” They were also entertained by the PNAGF’s Scholarship Committee Chair Don Bronto who sang ‘Sa Piling Mo.” There were nothing but positive comments heard among the guests that night. Everyone had a great time and ex-pressed to have a repeat dance event soon. It was indeed a successful PNAGF fund raising initiative for this year 2013.

The Philippine Nurses Association of Gulf Coast Flor-ida, Inc. pre- Valentine’s Day Party was held last Febru-ary 9, 2013 at the Cabaret Dance Club in Palm Harbor, Florida. It was exactly 4 weeks in preparation for this fund raising initiative spearheaded by PNAGF Ways and Means Committee Chair, Merly Santos- Llanto. There were about 95 guests in attendance who danced the night away. The guests were welcomed by PNAGF President, Cecile M. Santos- Medenilla. She thanked them for coming and supporting the

An Open letter re: Typhoon Pablo

December 4, 2012 was the most unforgetta-ble day for my family, relatives and friends from Davao Oriental. It was the most devastating ty-phoon that ever landed in Davao Oriental. We never had experienced any natural calamity like a typhoon in my place. Typhoon Pablo hit my beautiful place, an area surrounded with beauti-ful white beaches and coconut trees, with terrible force. It was indeed a beautiful paradise to us before this storm. Watching the news from the television, the devastation caused by typhoon Pablo was overwhelming. All the houses had no roofs. The coconut trees were all destroyed by the high winds. Our place became chaotic. So many people died from the terrible storm. I am so lucky that all my family and relatives survived. It was not easy for me to watch the news and to see how my countrymen suffered. I was very helpless at first. I didn’t know what to do in order to help them. I had so many ideas in my mind about how to help my people. As a nurse, I wanted to go home and serve my countrymen. I wanted to volunteer as a nurse to help the wounded and the sick. But it was not realistic at all. So I decided to talk to my Phillippine Nurses Association Gulfcoast, Florida (PNAGF) President Cecille M. Santos- Medenilla about my idea of raising money. Without hesitation, Cecille sent the message to all the Executive Board of Directors of PNAGF. I received overwhelming

support from my organization which surprised me a lot. I never thought that this organization would be so supportive. I was so thankful to my PNAGF family for being there. I raised more than $2,000. I sent the money to my sister and she bought mosquito nets, slippers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, can goods, rice, sugar, coffee, milk, clothes and tarps. These were just small things, but they meant so much to the people who were victims of this naturally calamity. The people in my town were so happy to receive the goods from the PNAGF. I was very happy that despite the distance I was able to help them in my own little way. Thanks to the generosity of my colleagues from PNAFG, our neighbors, my co workers, and friends. They are a God send to me. I would not have been able to materialize my plan without their help. God Bless PNAGF!

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." - Winston Churchill Philippine Nurses Association of Southern California, Inc (PNASC) began the spring season with a fundraising effort, “Dance for a Cause”, on March 16, 2013 at the Philippine Village in Eagle Rock, CA. Remember the revolving silver ball on the ceiling? The lighted dance floor? The music of the Bee Gees and Village People (courtesy of Randy DJ)? Try hard to forget. It was Disco/Ballroom Night for PNASC! Looking around it was easy to see that the affair combines all the tradi-tional ingredients of good food, good drinks, a cheerful ambience and guests arrayed in their dancing attire. With such a combination, it simply was “What a night!” All proceeds go to the organization’s work providing nursing scholarships, community and medical outreach locally and globally, and leadership development. Thanks to the dedication shown by our Executive Board and Advisory Council, members and friends of PNASC, we surpassed our fundraising goal. Everyone’s involvement has been tremendous and is a testament of our commitment to our mission and vision. For making all this possible, special thanks go to Linda Absher, PNASC Chair, Ways and Means Committee, Victoria Nidoy, Vice-Chair and members, Tonette So, Peachy Meteoro and Elsa Zeta-Cabatan for their organ-izational skills and leadership, for staging such a terrific event. PNASC would like to thank Megaworld Interna-tional led by John Q. Salas for sponsoring our event. In charity, there really is no excess.

An excerpt from the PNAA theme song states, “Stand proud, tall and strong, shine PNAA shine. We will show our dedication, our commitment to the community, our excellence to our profes-sion. We dedicate this to the next generation”. Indeed, true its guiding principles, the Philippine Nurses Association Maryland Chapter (PNAMC) celebrated its 10th Anniversary proud and strong in March 2, 2013 at the Sheraton Hotel in Towson with over 300 in atten-dance. Among the guests, were nursing leaders from John Hopkins, Mercy and University of Maryland and various other health care institutions? The inspirational speaker was His Excellency Jose L. Cuisia, Jr., the Philip-pine Ambassador to the United States. Established in 2003 at height of Filipino nurses recruitment by major health care institutions in the United States, PNAMC became the 30th chapter of the Philip-

members real-ized the impor-tance of estab-lishing an organization to connect the nurses’ contribu-tion to the com-munity and to pass on the legacy to the

next generation. It provided linkages to various commu-nities and other professional organizations. Since its in-ception, its dedicated leaders and members solidified its legacy exponentially, locally and globally. PNAMC hosted two conventions: 9th Eastern Regional in Baltimore and the 30th PNAA National Convention in 2009, a mile-stone unsurpassed by any PNAA chapter in the US. In 2007, Governor O’Malley recognized PNAMC as the recipient of the “First Annual Foreign Educated Nurses

Best Practices in Recruit-ment and Management”. In 2010, PNAMC marked its first interna-tional Nursing Outreach Program in three under-served villages in Davao, Philippines, followed by the dona-tion of the mobile clinic in 2011. In 2012, again, PNAMC hosted its 2nd Nursing Outreach in Bakun, Banquet and conducted a nursing seminar at the St. Louis University School of Nursing. Guided by its dedicated leaders, PNAMC will continue to carry on the legacy to the next level. The PNAA theme song will reverberate for many generations, “Stand proud, tall and strong, Shine PNAA shine”.

Some of us came from the night shift and did not have an opportunity to take some zzzzzzz (nap), some of us took personal day and others were off and changed their personal sched-ules to attend and represent PNANJ. Listed below are the people who went: 1. Teresa Damito ( she brought her son with her because there was no one to baby sit for him) 2. Jay Layug ( off from work & recovering from a car accident) 3. Jessa Manalastas ( came from the night shift, no sleep) 4. Teresa deVries ( rearranged her schedule and appointments) 5. Liz Stefanowicz ( one of our members, was off that day) 6. Myrna Young ( took a personal day from work) Our goals were to network with our members and non-members, share with them the PNANJ activities, accomplishments, benefits of becoming a member, get them to know us, recruit and encourage them to get actively get involve with PNANJ. It was a successful event. We enjoyed networking with our kababayans. We were able to recruit one new member on the spot and several of them claimed they will mail their membership applications to Marsha.

Raritan Bay Medical Center Nurses Professional Organization Day update

Anyone who stopped by our table did not leave without a membership application, a copy of our PNANJ calendar of events, the PNAA position statement on Cynthia Villar, flyer for the PNAA annual convention in Ohio, our subchapter’s list of accomplishments and PNANJ Middlesex subchapter’s EB contact information. We proudly displayed our banner, our posters on benefits of becoming a member, PNANJ & PNANJ Middlesex county subchapter’s Executive Board and our goals and objectives. Several nurses showed interest in becoming active. We have about 3 or 4 key people there to serve as our contactmpeople and I promised them we will hold future meetings with them to strengthen our rela-tionship and get them involve actively with PNA. We were once again requested to participate in their Nursing Professional Day on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at their Pert Amboy branch. This is from 9am to 5pm. Jay Layug is off that day and has already signed up to represent us. We need more people to volunteer to join her. Please let us know if you are interested. I would like to thank Jessa, Teresa (x2), Liz & Jay for joining me in this wonderful experience. It is such a pleasure to have members of our organization you can count on and willing to go that extra mile.

The Hudson Fundraiser Party on March 8, 2013 at Newark Crowne Plaza Hotel was a huge success in spite of yet another snowy weather. CEO of Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC), Mr. Joe Scott, Councilmen Rolando Lavarro & Steven Fulop and other Jersey City officials were present to support this first fund-raising event. They served irresistible sumptuous Filipino dishes pre dinner that one could easily succumb to on a Lenten Friday night: dinuguan & puto, Chicken arroz caldo, embutido, shangai, spaghetti, fish, palitaw, brazo de mercedes and many more. Fe Saquibal, JCMC Supervisor, Subchapter adviser and Event Chair, jokingly commented "we feed you with all Filipino foods just like you came to Jersey City so you'll come again next time". The dancing was great with Line dance tutorials and lots of new dance moves on screen so you can dance on your own pace. Armand, another JSMC supervisor and the nights’ favorite, entertained the audience with old time favorite hits. As PNANJ President, I was tasked to give a welcome message. After giving a very brief history of Hudson County & their accomplishments, I touched on the most heated topic: Congresswoman Villar's statement on Filipino Nurses and the nursing profession. I shared the comments of Ambassador Cuisia, who we met in MD last week and the PNAA Position Statement. After my address, several nurses approached and thanked me for giving light into the issue. They are pleased that they belong to this organization and that PNAA made a prompt and appro-priate response. Having said this, I urge everyone to please disseminate the Special Edition of “Inside PNAA” to our constitu-ents, colleagues both here and abroad. They are hungry for information and we need to feed them the correct information. Kudos to Madelyn & Ferdie for such a "special" edition and to Vicky Navarro & her team for the "Rapid Response".

The new standards for the provision of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) went into effect on January 1st, 2013. The changes are noteworthy for measuring quality outcomes related to professional development. Learner satisfaction, increase in knowledge, change in behavior/attitude over time and learning of new skills are some of the indicators for learning. Approved Providers have the responsibility of demonstrating that such changes occurred as a result of the CNE. Included in every CNE application are methods to measure learning. Acceptable also are quality outcomes i.e. infection rates, fall rates or some quantitative measure of an indicator in a facility. Because PNANJ only plans and coordinates single events to a varied audience of nurses, most of these methods are not applicable. This

poses a challenge because the choices are much fewer. There were also changes in the biographical data form for planners and speakers. The Conflict of Interest form is much more extensive with narratives on how potential /actual conflict(s) was/were resolved. The Approved Provider Unit renewal was extensive and in-tensive as each standard required an example of how the standard was met. Meeting the standard is one thing but showing how the Provider Unit meets the standard is an-other. This renewal required so many man hours that the Lead Nurse Planner for PNANJ, Amelia “Mae” Guzman MSN,RN,CCM commented “it took the Merry out of her Christmas”. This comment was not far from the truth. The renewal passed with flying colors and will be in effect until 3/2016. PNANJ as a Provider Unit plans and coordinates an average of 40 contact hours a year.
