We feed people — body, mind, and spirit.
Come as you are.
Dear friends,
Your warm and enthusiastic welcome has made me feel at home here. Thank you
for your hospitality, and a blessed Easter to you.
I am glad to be able to help during this early phase of your search for a new
priest. My time of service here will be decided by the wardens and the Rev’d Victor
Conrado who is working with the vestry and search committee. My task is to be
the “continuing presence”. My general approach is to carry on in the spirit of
continuity with your present pattern of work and worship.
My regular office day is Wednesday and I can be reached here then. I look for-
ward to getting to know you all better. Your fine parish administrator, wardens,
and parish musician are all dedicated to St. Giles, and I am grateful for their help
and guidance.
Please feel free to call me Tom, by the way. If you’d rather, (or if you’re instructing
children), call me Fr. Scott or Dr. Scott.
God’s peace and joy,
Tom Scott

Meet John James Michael Hanzel
I’ve been attending St. Giles since 1987, when Elizabeth and I were married.
What brought me to St. Giles was that I just followed Elizabeth’s lead. She grew
up in Deerfield and she and her family had been attending St. Giles for years.
This is my third ―tour of duty,‖ on the Vestry, and my 10th year on the Vestry
(not consecutive terms).
There are several aspects about St. Giles that I love. The music and the friendly
atmosphere here are wonderful. I also like the size of the congregation.
Three items that are always in my refrigerator:
1. Bacon (surprise!)
2. Beer
3. Diet Coke
Some ―fun facts‖ about J. J. M. Hanzel:
1. My father’s auction house (―Hanzel’s Auction House‖) was considered
as a location for the Hitchcock film, ―North by Northwest‖.
2. I’m a decent handyman, and I know how to use a hammer and saw.
3. Hanzel’s Auction House sold a letter written by George Washington in
which he declined a reward of 75,000 acres of land for leading the
Americans to victory over England. It was a three-page letter and the
handwriting was very elegant. I think it sold for $70,000. Today it would
probably sell for $500,000.
Come talk to me if you have any questions about Vestry or church issues.
You’re invited to any of our Vestry meetings (7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday
of each month).
* Michael is my confirmation name.

Senior Warden Report:
Dear Saint Gileans at home and abroad:
My first report of the 2019 year shall be written in the future perfect because the events outlined below have not yet transpired as I write.
As many of you already know or may have accurately assumed, the past couple of months have been turbulent for me and my ―partner in wardening,‖ Kay Okoli. We are both new in the roles of senior and junior warden, and we agreed to take these responsibilities before we knew that Cynthia Hallas would be moving to Waukegan in her new role.
My first expression of gratitude has to go out to Kay because she has jumped right in, fearlessly and energetically, taking the lead in our search for a new rector. She has helped me ―connect the dots‖ and guided me to contact this or that person and take care of this or that task in a timely manner. In a word, she has been a wonderful support and co-leader.
Next on my list of ―thank-yous‖ is our extended supply priest, Tom Scott. Tom will be with us until we find an in-terim rector, and I am grateful that he has been brought to our parish. He lives in Evanston, so he can get to church even when April showers become six inches of snow! Tom has years of experience, and it is already showing in his meaningful sermons and his wisdom. I hope he may soon feel comfortable leading some adult forums before he leaves us. Thank you, Tom, for leading us in our Holy Week services and vigils and Easter celebration.
Speaking of Holy Week, there is a cast of personnel who well deserve recognition and many, many thanks.
I’ll begin my Easter thanks with Cathy, our parish administrator, who quietly, calmly continues to hold our commu-nications center together. She tirelessly prepares all of our programs for this busy, busy, holy week. Thank you, Cathy, for keeping us connected with the Holy Spirit and with each other.
I would also like to recognize our Hospitality Team for hosting our traditional Agape meal and Easter reception. These two events are at opposite ends of a spectrum, and they each play a valuable role in our Holy Week devo-tions and celebration.
Altar Guild also has many duties during Holy Week, and we should be grateful for the experience and diligence which this team brings to its tasks. Thank you, A.G., for all you do during this holiest of weeks.
My finale for Holy Week recognition and gratitude is aimed at our disciplined and dedicated music director, James R. Brown. I’m confident in writing that he feels good about the music program that he and our wonderful choir rehearsed and exposed us to during Holy Week. In some ways Jim and his musical team have spoiled us because we now expect nothing but amazing music and lyrics throughout the year. Easter Sunday is usually the musical climax for the year, and I have no doubt that Jim and our choir will deliver heavenly music this year. Thanks to all of our musical members!
Before I conclude my list of thanks, I have to acknowledge a group that has little to do with Easter, yet it plays a vital role in our parish community: Rector Search Committee. This group consists of: co-chairs Monique Howard and Mike Piskel; Colette Dim, Bonnie Frankel, Curt Jones, George Miller, and Martha McGuire. I’m offering my thanks to this group not only for the arduous journey they have embarked upon, but also for the work they have already accomplished. Specifically, our Search Committee has organized our parish-wide Congregational Assess-ment Tool (CAT) survey, and they will be distributing and administering this vital step in our rector search very soon. Thanks for your diligence and discerning judgment and continued communication with our community.
Apologies for my verbosity this month. We all know that Easter is an active, important season, and I don’t want to overlook anybody, or any group, that contributed to our services and celebrations.
Blessings and Peace,
James Brooks, Senior Warden

Vestry; April Re-cap
By Bill Perley
Our Jr. Warden, Kay Okoli, led the April 16 vestry meeting.
Glenn opened our meeting with a few inspirational words.
The CAT (Congregation Assessment Tool) Survey is coming out soon. The importance of the fullest possible participation was discussed. To do us good, the survey will have to fully reflect the broad spectrum of hopes of every individual in the parish. John even suggested that parishioners be encouraged to give ―vigorous‖ thought to their responses.
We have now engaged an Extended Supply Priest who will be conducting church services and extending pasto-ral care to us. He is the Reverend Tom Scott, a retired priest. He will be with us until a true Interim Rector can be found and engaged. He will be at St. Giles on Sundays and other Holy Days. In addition, he expects to be in the office one half day each week.
As to the taking on of an Interim Rector, at this time we have received one letter, together with a resume, from a priest in the area who would be available to provide interim services. This letter came to us through the diocese.
The Search Committee will have to be authorized to spend money in the carrying out of its business. This in-cludes expenses associated with the processing of the CAT Survey. It was voted to use money already budgeted for Rector Expenses for these purposes.
Bob Schultz (not on the vestry) had gone through the rectory with a few other parishioners checking its condi-tion. He had planned to be with us this night to review the conditions and discuss the work needed for rehabili-tation. A pressing (pushing?) family matter prevented his being here. We hope that all came out well. We were told that the kitchen and all bathrooms were in want of complete remodeling. That, along with other needs could run into a considerable amount of money.
There was discussion of what should be done and when, how this should be jockeyed with the arrival of possi-ble new residents, including an interim rector and/or new rector. Lew suggested that the condition of the rec-tory would be an important aspect of the attractiveness of the parish. Ted related that there have been some habitability improvements on hold since even before the Risks moved in.
St. Giles will be renewing its agreement with The Campanella Choir, if they are to continue meeting in our buildings in the 2019 – 2020 school year. Bonnie Frankel (not on the vestry) has been talking with them about financial dealings. She submitted to the vestry a letter reviewing their situation as it now stands and possible changes for the coming year. The vestry voted to ask Bonnie to pursue this matter as she best sees fit.
Campanella has been expressing interest in holding some kind of a fundraising event on the church grounds. People involved in running our Rocktoberfest have met with them, explaining the preparation and work needed to make something like this happen. St. Giles has not heard back from them since that meeting.
The parish’s 2018 Parochial Report to the diocese is due. Cynthia has prepared the pastoral portions of the re-port, and Gloriann Harris is finishing up the fiscal portions. As soon as they are ready, she will give them to the wardens for review and submission. The rest of the vestry will approve the report either through e-mail ex-change or at the May meeting.
Glenn closed the meeting by leading us in a service of Compline.
