    iINTRODUCTIOlf

A History of s t . Mogue's, Ballycanews t . Mogue1s Church of Ireland in the par ish of Ballycanew, county Wexford, i s the oldest extant church edif ice inthe Diocese of Ferns, and indeed, is among the oldest Protest an t churches s t i l l in use in Ireland. Although the date ofi t s erect ion remains unknown, it probably dates to the f i r s tquar ter of the la th century. Buil t S.n a t r ad i t iona l cruciformshape, i t s arched neoclassical w.'.ndows re f l ec t an I r i sh

vernacular adaptation of the style made popular a t the timeby Sir Christopher Wren. Constructed of wood with a facadeof stone, it has recent ly undergone an extensive res tora t iont ha t included covering i t s walls with a s tone-l ike exte r ior .I t contains no monuments of qreat antiquity, and the ea r l ie s tmemorial insc r ip t ions in the churchyard date to the mid 18thcentury.Centrally located on a small h i l l in the vi l lage , s t .Mogue's was probably bu i l t on a more ancient s i te of re l ig i -ous worship. P. H. Hore remarked t r .at the present church "issaid to occupy the s i t e of the a n c i ~ n t one, but every remaiof ant iqui ty has long since disappeared from th i s local i ty . 11The Norman family of Neville, who occupied the par ish fromthe 14th through 16th centuries, may have used the s i t e fora chapel, a l t h O u g ~ there are no surviving documents to supportt h i s contention. James Leslie notes tha t the Ballycanewrectory was par t of the corps of the Ferns t reasurer as ear lyas 1409, which would seem to indicate tha t a church had beenerected. By 1613, s t . Mogue1s had bocome a Protes tant chapel ,and a v i s i t a t ion book from t h ~ t year indicated tha t it had "aCommon Prayer Book provided.1!The ear l iest: known clergyman 1':0 serve the parish wasDaniel Murphy, an Irishman, who wa,:,; curate in 1613 and wasl i s ted as "a reading minister. 11 By 1675, the par ish was underthe care of the Reverend Theophilus Wil1iams, the l icencedcurate ;:..f Killu1kelog, Killemehok, Kilrus.n, i-lullymoki:r..(Monomolin), Kilcavan and Ballycannoo. Nothing i s known ofWilliams, and his tenure may have heen br ie f . within threeyears the par ish was under the carE:! of the Reverend WilliamBurre l l , curate of Chris t Church, G ~ r e y , who also served theparishes of Kilnehue, Kilcavan, Ballycanew, Mullomo1ing{Monomolin}, an d Kil t r i sk . He had metriculated a t Queen'sCollege, Cambridge and received his orders in London in 1672.His service in Ireland was also br ie f , and by 1680 he hadbecome rec tor of Great Parndon in E s s e x ~ He died in 1704 a tthe age of 57 anJ was buried a t Harden. The history of s t . Mogue IS a:: the close of the 17thcentury remains obscure. The rectorship of Ballycanew becamepar t of the duties of the diocesan t reasurer , while a curate

Nothing i s known of t he i r successors un t i l wellinto the 18th century. The ear l ies t known clergyman to serve as rector was JamesHarvey, who was also appointed d i o c e ~ a n t reasurer before 1720.Born a t Kil l iane cast le , ) County \'lexford in 1676, he hadentered Trini ty College in 1699 and had received h is Masterof Arts degree by 1707. He was ordained to the priesthood in1709, and in 1720 was named curate of Killenagh, next ofBa1lycanew. s t . Mogue I s became one of several parishes Harveyserved, but his act iv i t ies specif ical ly there remain unknown. He i s l i s ted as a pew holder in the parish in 1760, indicat ingtha t h is role as a clergyman there may not have been an act iveone. Several curates served the c h ~ r c h under his care, amongthem Edward L a n g ~ o r d , who also s e r v ~ d Mullomoling, Kil t r i sk ,and Kil l inick. He seems to have remained only through 1730,for the following year he was named curate of Gowran in theDiocese of Ossory.By 1760, another curate, the Reverend Humphrey Hartley, had assUlDed the reins of the par ish, but the date of hisarr ival i s not known. Hart1ey had been born a t Balloghan, county Carlow in 1711, a son of the Reverend Wi1liam Hartley.Educated f i r s t by the Reverend Harft inch Piggott of New Ross,he l a t e r entered Trini ty College in 1730 and received hisMaster 's Degree by 1739. He was curate of Edermine in CountyWexford in 1735 ~ n d may have been c ~ r a t e of several parishesconcurrently. In 1739, an act of Council united the parishesof Ballycanew , Leskinfere, Mullamoling and Kil t r i sk , andHartley may have taken over the care of a l l four parishes soonaf t e r th is date. He was certa inly in Ballycanew before 1760,when he presided a t the reassignment of pews on New Yearts Dayof t ha t year. An active land holder, he appears frequentlyin the surviving leases for the vil lage and m.aintained anes ta te a t Tomgarr in the par ish. He resigned his post du e tof r a i l health in 1780 and p r e s u ~ a b l y died soon af te r , leavinga wife, Honor, and three sons.James Harvey died in 1760 leaving vacant both ther ~ c t v ~ ~ h i p and the diocesan t reasurer ' s p ~ s ~ . The p o s i ~ i c n fe l l next to the Reverend George AlIen, another Wexfordnat ive . Born in the city of Wexford in 1711, he ha d enteredTrini ty College in 1729 and was there a t the same tim.e asHartley. On being named t reasurer of Ferns, he also spentt ime in his role as rector of Ballycanew and Kil t r i sk . Hepresided a t the vestry of 1761, o:e which only an abs t rac tsurvives. He remained in office unt i l his death in 1776, andhis tombstone in Leskinfere churchyard described him as"Rector of the Union of Ballycanew."AlIen s successor, the Reverend Wensly Bond had thelongest term in off ice of any of his predecessors. The sonof a P r e s b y t e r i a ~ minister of Corboy, county Longford, he had

Afterward, he was appointed Deanof Ross in 1773, and three years l a t e r was elevated to Fernst reasurer and rector of Ballycanew, Mullomolinq, and Leskinfere . Bond presided only i rregularly a t Ballycanews vest ry.He took l i t t l e in teres t in ,col lect inq the par ish cess , leavingth i s duty to h is curates . He appeared usually to adjudicatein specia l par ish matters, such as pew assignments anddetermining the need for church repairs . Hence, in 1802, heresponded to a oomplaint tha t "many of the Inhabitants ofBallycanow and Kil t r i sk , paying the parish cess, are notaccomodated with pews in th i s Church, while other persons andfamilies not l iving in ei ther parish nor paying an y par ishcess occupy pews which they alledge to have a r ight to . If Heappears to have been fair-minded and usually sided with thosepar ishioners who paid the i r cess and demanded pews.Several curates served s t . M o q ~ e ' s under Bond's rec tor-ship. When Humphrey Hartley r e t i red a t the end of 1780, he wassucceeded by the Reverend Andrew Li t t l e , whose background i snot known. He may have been related to Simon Li t t l e , whoserved as par ish c lerk. Almost n o t ~ i n g i s known of Li t t l e ' stenure in the par ish; he seems to have been advanced in agea t the time of his a r r iva l in 1781. He continued the famil iaradmonishment of nonparishioners to pay the parish cess , orotherwise r i sk losing the i r pews, and he seems to have enjoyedconsiderable popular i ty. When he re t i red on July 23 , 1792,the par ish passed the following resolut ion:Influenced by the humane, pious and unwearied Attentionwhich has ever been zealously employed in discharging theimportant Duties of your Sacred Office, and l ikewise bythe very honourable and t rustworthy Disposal of suchMonies as have a t any Times been raised for the ParishPurposes, We the undernamed Protestant Parishioners ofthe above Union beg Leave to t e s t i fy to you our sincereand un feigned Approbation of your Conduct hoping tha tyou may long l ive happy to enjoy among us the Reverenceand love which is equally due to your amiable privatechar.?cter as to your Public Vi rt:'.1

I1 By the end of 1792 hehad apparently departed from the parish. The 1790s were a time of tumult in County Wexford fo rboth the Catholic and Protestant populations, and the membership of s t . Mogue's was not unaffected. The events of revolut ionary France prompted an increase in united I r i sh ac t iv i tyin I re land, leading many Protes tants to feel increasedanxiety. In November, 1792, a group of protestants , meetinga t the Crown and Anchor Tavern in London, passed a ser ies ofresolut ions in response to what they perceived was the growingdanger to the public peace "by the circula t ing of mischieviousopinions n including the so-calle:! Ins tead ofbeing e lec ted by the par i sh ioner s , it was comprised loose lyof the par i sh ioner s t h e m s ~ l v e s , who came t oge the r in an openset t ing- to discuss th e matters of the church. Meetings, a l soknown as v es t r i e s , were held inf requent ly - always on E a s t e rTuesday and only i r r eg u la r ly on o the r occas ions . The p r i n -c i pa l focus of th e vestry-was to e l ec t churchwardens fo r theensuing year and to determine the a ~ o u n t of cess or ta x to bera ised upon the acreage of every par i sh ioner .Th e of f i ce of churchwarden was not a coveted one inBallycanew, and se rv ice in the pos t became a mat te r of dutyra the r than choice . The pr inCipal respons ib i l i ty of theof f i ce was to co l l ec t the pa r i sh cess and presen t it to thecurate with in a year . The r e c t o r did not permi t anyone toserve i n the o f f i ce twice ; once one had completed a y ea r ' sduty , he was not a ~ d to serve again. Thus, in IS13, SamuelHoll insworth was ap oin ted churchwarden "provided t h a t he d idno t serve as church arden before . I! paying th e cess was no tpopular with l oca l r s i d e n t s , and ".he increas ing resentmenttoward the co l lec to rs 'made the chur=hwarden dis l iked .The ves t ry also appointed a p p l ~ t e r s fo r the pa r i sh , whowould determine the amount of cess to be paid by each r e s i -dent . This pos t carr ied more pres t ige , and t he r e were nol imi t s imposed on l eng th of se rv ice . The cura te r ese rved thetwo posts for t rus ted par i sh ioner s , usual ly those having somemeans and l i t e r acy s k i l l s . Thesewere l e f t so le ly to the domain of the rec to r and bishop, taking di rec t ion from Canterbury. Preaching was s t r i c t l yr equ la ted , and the o f f i c i a t i n g clergyman could give sermonsonly by reading from one of severa l author ized t ex t s .Communion was admin is te red only on holy days and seldom a tother t imes . Some churches had choi r s and so lo i s t s beginningin the mid-18th century , but s t . Mogue's, Ballycanew was a smal l , provincia l church, with few of the amenit ies of i t s l a rg e r s i s t e r par i shes a tGorey and Ferns. Even with the prayerbook, i t s se rv ices wereaus te re and pla in to more modern t a s t e s . Sabbath-keeping wass t rongly encouraged, y e t the church could not provide enoughpews fo r those who wished to a t t end on Sundays. It was alsoa place , moreover, which offered a smal l measure of democracyto a group of mid- level farmers and merchants who wereotherwise la rge ly excluded from the p o l i t i c a l system.

About the RecordsI have at tempted in the fol lowing work to prov ide anexact t r an sc r ip t of the S t . Mogue's ves try minute book whichi s housed in the church va u l t a t Ballycanew. I have maint a ined or ig ina l punctuat ion and spe l l ings in near ly a l lins tances , the only change being th e subs t i tu t ion of the word"and" fo r "&11 whenever it occurred in order to achieve g rea t e rl e g i b i l i t y and ease in reading. I hi:..ve also had to change theorder of the book. When rebels t u re the pages out of theor ig ina l book dur ing the Rebellior: ' , a few leaves were r e covered and sew::) in to a new volume. Most of these 'I.Tsrcr es to red out of s e ~ u e n c e , which forced me to ,impose a chronol og ica l order upon them t h a t d i f f e r s from the order o f theor ig ina l volume. II have taken considerably more l iber ty , with the par i sh
