    INSTANT REMEMBRANCE DAY ACTIVITIES

    Instant Remembrance Day Activities K–6

    Encouraging Topic Interest

    Rubrics and Checklists

    Learning Logs

    Blackline Masters and Graphic Organizers

    Vocabulary List

Help students develop an understanding and appreciation of different Remembrance Day concepts. Engage students through stories, easy-to-read non-fiction books, videos, and other resources, as a springboard for learning.

Use the rubrics and checklists in this book to assess students’ learning.

Keeping a learning log is an effective way for students to organize thoughts and ideas about the Remembrance Day concepts presented. Student learning logs also provide insight on what follow-up activities are needed to review and to clarify concepts learned. Learning logs can include the following types of entries: • Teacher prompts • Students’ personal reflections • Questions that arise • Connections discovered • Labelled diagrams and pictures

Use the blackline masters and graphic organizers to present information, reinforce important concepts, and to extend opportunities for learning. The graphic organizers will help students focus on important ideas, or make direct comparisons.

Students can use the blackline master to record new vocabulary of theme-related words. In addition, keep track of new and theme-related vocabulary on chart paper for students’ reference during writing activities. Encourage students to add theme-related words. Classify the word list into the categories of nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

Inside this book, you will find the following Remembrance Day Activities:

    • Bulletin Board Ideas • Reading Activities • Writing Prompts • Word Searches • Crosswords • Clip Art • Connect the Dots • Research Topic Ideas • Certificates

    What You Need

    Activity

    Border

Cover the bulletin board with red or black construction paper.

Copy, colour, cut out, and paste the clip art found in this book to create a border.

Have students write Remembrance Day messages or poems on white maple leaves on red construction paper squares, and use them to create a bulletin board display.

Create and display an Honour Roll. Have students collect and list names of family members or friends who served during the First World War, Second World War, Korean War, or in peacekeeping missions.

As a class, design a Canadian War Memorial and write about the symbols that they choose to incorporate into their design. Students may wish to include some of the clipart patterns in this book, such as peace doves. To enlarge any clipart pattern, use an overhead projector and trace it onto paper. Cut out the clipart pattern. Use markers, paint, or crayons to colour it, then post it on the bulletin board.

    • Red construction paper, cut into squares • White construction paper • Glue and scissors • Pencils • Maple leaf clipart to trace

    1. Have students use the maple leaf clipart and cut out a white maple leaf. 2. Glue the white maple leaf on a red construction paper square. 3. Instruct students to write a message or poem about Remembrance Day

inside the maple leaf. 4. Collect the maple leaf squares and assemble into a class display.
