New Line CinemaBuilding on more than four decades of innovation and creativity, New Line Cinema continues its long and successful history of producing critically acclaimed hit films that resonate with both mainstream and niche audiences around the world.

New Line became a unit of Warner Bros. Entertainment in March 2008. The company maintains separate development, production, marketing, distribution and business affairs operations, but coordinates those functions with Warner Bros. to maximize film performance and operating efficiencies.

New Line produced the Oscar Award-winning The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, which generated a combined worldwide box office of almost $3 billion (and an additional $3 billion in consumer products and home entertainment revenue). This was followed by a trilogy of films based on The Hobbit, which is currently closing in on the $3 billion mark in global receipts.

The studio is also credited with revitalizing the genre of the R-rated comedy, based on the success of Wedding Crashers in 2005 and, more recently, Horrible Bosses in 2011 and its sequel in 2014. New Line is also one of the few film companies still active in the horror genre, being widely known for the iconic A Nightmare on Elm Street, Final Destination and The Conjuring franchises, the first two films of which (The Conjuring and Annabelle) have earned more than $570 million in global box office.

Aside from its franchise hits, New Line’s long list of popular films includes The Mask, the Austin Powers titles, the Final Destination titles, Hairspray, Rush Hour, Elf, Sex and the City and Wedding Crashers.

As my advanced portfolio will follow the motion picture side of things hence I will be taking Warner Bros Pictures into greater consideration. The Warner Bros. Pictures Group brings together the Studio’s motion picture production, marketing and distribution operations into a single entity. The Group, which includes Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures International, was formed to streamline the Studio’s film production process and bring those businesses’ organizational structures in line with Warner Bros.’ television and home entertainment operations.

Warner Bros. Pictures produces and distributes a wide-ranging slate of some 18-22 films each year, employing a business paradigm that mitigates risk while maximizing productivity and capital. Warner Bros. Pictures either fully finances or co-finances the films it produces and maintains worldwide distribution rights. It also monetizes its distribution and marketing operations by distributing films that are totally financed and produced by third parties. Among the films on Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2014 slate are The LEGO Movie, 300: Rise of an Empire, Edge of Tomorrow, Jupiter Ascending, The Judge, Horrible Bosses 2 (New Line Cinema) and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies (NLC). Warner Bros. Pictures International on the other hand is a global leader in the marketing and distribution of feature films, operating offices in more than 30 countries and releasing films in over 120 international territories, either directly to theaters or in conjunction with partner companies and co-ventures.

HistoryOne of the most respected, diversified and successful motion picture and television studios in the world, Warner Bros. Studios began when the brothers Warner (Albert, Sam, Harry and Jack L.) incorporated their fledgling movie company on April 4, 1923. In 1927, the release of the world’s first “talkie,” (synchronized-sound feature film), The Jazz Singer, set a character and tone of innovation and influence that would become synonymous with the name Warner Bros. And—as Al Jolson foretold in this milestone movie—“you ain’t heard nothin’ yet!”Since those early days, Warner Bros. Studios has amassed an impressive legacy based on world-class quality entertainment and technological foresight and created a diversified entertainment company with an unparalleled depth and breadth. Its unmatched consistency and success is built on a foundation of stable management throughout its history (especially by entertainment industry standards), long-term creative relationships with many of the world’s leading talent, and an unwavering dedication to excellence.

Why choose Warner Bros?

Even though I chose Warner Bros as my institution of research for my foundation portfolio, I believe that Warner bros is the best institution to represent my Advanced portfolio as well simply because I am focusing on the thriller genre this time around and Warner Bros is arguably the home of thriller. Warner Bros has put out master pieces like Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy, Argo and the Friday the 13th Series.
