Technical Information Mechanical Pipe Shields recommends rigid polyisocyanurate insulation because it is a much cleaner material and has several advantages over Calcium Silicate. In most cases the Trymer Urethane has adequate compressive strength to meet the requirements of weight bearing loads at the hanger point. The following files outline the characteristics of Trymer Foam Insulation. Note that Trymer 2000 has a compressive strength of 24 p.s.i., Trymer 4000 a compressive strength of 80 p.s.i., and Trymer 6000 a compressive strength of 140 p.s.i. The plastic shield only enhances the compressive strengths. The only limitation for the Polyisocyanurate Foam Insulation is that it cannot be used in environments where the temperature exceeds 300°F or 149°C. The Trymer 2000 & 4000 will meet all other applicable codes. The following pages and tables provide technical information from Dow Chemical (www.dowpipe.com), Resolco International BV (www.resolco.com), Georgia Gulf Chemicals and Vinyls, LLC (www.ggc.com), Intertek ETL SEMKO (www.intertek-etlsemko.com), and IIG Industrial Insulation Group (www.intelligentinsulation.com).

Product Data

Insulated pipe supports are made of either Hydrous Calcium Silicate or Polyisocyanurate Foam insula-tion (Urethane). The calcium silicate and urethane is available in a variety of thickness and densities. A two piece 360° galvanized metal jacket or a one piece 360° PVC jacket with a self locking lap system is available. The standard size for both types of inserts is 4 inches of insulation and 4 inches of jacket for pipes ½ thru 2 inch. For pipes 2 ½ thru 6 inches, the insulation is 6 inches with 4 inches of jacket. Lar-ger lengths for either insulation or jacket are available upon request. Hydrous Calcium Silicate has the following characteristics: Compressive Strength = 100 p.s.i average Flexural Strength = 75 p.s.i average K Factor = .2288 @ 100°F mean Working Temperature Range = -20°F to +1200°F

Tested in accordance with ASTM E84 TRYMER 2000 Polyisocyanurate Foam Insulation (Urethane) Compressive Strength = 24 p.s.i. Flexural Strength = 44 p.s.i. K Factor = 0.141 @ 75°F Working Temperature Range = -297 °F to + 300°F

Tested in accordance with ASTM E84 TRYMER 4000 Compressive Strength = 80 p.s.i. Flexural Strength = 110 p.s.i. K Factor = 0.150 @ 75°F Working Temperature Range = -297 °F to + 300°F

Tested in accordance with ASTM E84 TRYMER 6000 Compressive Strength = 140 p.s.i. Flexural Strength = 160 p.s.i. K Factor = 0.160 @ 75°F Working Temperature Range = -297 °F to + 300°F

Tested in accordance with ASTM 84 Please note that urethane has a 0.03% water absorption factor where as calcium silicate will absorb 100%. Calcium Silicate Inserts are noted as Type CP-104, CG-104, CP-106, and CG-106. The CP designates a Calcium Silicate Plastic Jacket and CG designates a Calcium Silicate Galvanized jacket. The 104 designates 4 inches in length with 4 inches of jacket and the 106 designates 6 inches in length and 4 inches in jacket. Urethane inserts are noted as Type T2-104, Type T4-104, Type T6-104, Type T2-106, Type T4-106, and Type T6-106. The T2 represents Trymer 2000, T4 Trymer 4000, and T6 Trymer 6000. The 104 is 4 inches of insulation and 4 inches of PVC self-locking jacket. The 106 is 6 inches of insulation and 4 inches of PVC self-locking jacket.

INTRODUCTION

On November 14, 2005, Intertek Testing Services NA Ltd./Warnock Hersey conducted a flame spread test program to determine the surface burning characteristics of insulation PVC pipe supports. The material tested was selected, prepared, and submitted by BBMI, LLC. Testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM E84-05, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Materials. Upon receipt of the samples at the Intertek/Warnock Hersey laboratory they were placed in the conditioning room where they remained in an atmosphere of 23 ± 3ºC (73.4 ± 5ºF) and 50 ± 5% relative humidity until they reached a constant weight. One trial run was conducted on the sample material.

SAMPLE MOUNTING

The test sample was constructed using four sample pieces. Each sample piece consisted of a 6 ft. 6 in. copper pipe protected by 6 ft. of insulation, separated by a 4 in. long insulated PVC pipe support. The test sample was supported on the upper ledge of the flame spread tunnel using 3/8 in. steel rods that were placed perpendicular through the ends of each sample piece. An insulated PVC pipe support was placed at the front of the first sample length and at each joint of copper pipe. A layer of 6mm Hardiboard was placed over top of the test sample, the tunnel lid was lowered into place, and the sample was tested in accordance with accordance with ASTM E84-05.
