Integrating Sports Ethics in the High School Curriculum

About the project The Electromechanical school Varaždin is the main coordinator of the KA2 Erasmus Strategic partnerships

project for general education entitled "Integrating Sports Ethics in the High School Curriculum”. The project

comes out from an idea by professor of philosophy Matija Mato Škerbić, in collaboration with Prof.ssa

Filomena Greco from Italy, Prof. Jens Putzar from Germany Prof. Vojko Strahovnik from Slovenia and Bruno

Ćurko from Croatia.

It is a KA2 Erasmus project for general education, which connects five partners from four European countries:

Croatia – Electromechanical School Varaždin – coordinator school - http://ess.hr

Italy – Istituto Professionale per l'Enogastronomia and Hospitality Services Hotel Hospital "Ancel Keys" de

Castelnuovo Cilento https://www.iisancelkeys.edu.it

Germany – Friedrich-Wöhler-Gymnasium Singen - http://www.fwg-singen.de/

lj.si/academies_and_faculties/faculties/2013071111533062/

Croatia – Petit Philosophy Association Zadar - http://www.petit-philosophy.com/

The project is of an interdisciplinary nature and is primarily intended for professors of a series of subjects who

may include topics related to ethics of sport in the course of their subject, which involves dealing with specific

moral problems, such as ethics and philosophy, religion, politics and economics (racism, corruption,

betting...), sociology (racism, gender equality), chemistry and biology (doping, Paralympics...), physical

education, art (fairness of aesthetic sports scoring) etc. It is about subjects which can integrate in the existing

curricula various moral problems of ethics of sport.

Project goals

There are three intellectual outcomes, but the primary is development of the Framework Curriculum of Ethics

of Sport, which consists of four modules: Intentional Violation of Rules and Fair-Play in Sports; Virtues and

Weaknesses in Sports; Gender Equality in Sports; and Racism in Sports. In addition, the aim is to create

Educational Guidelines, which would include various tools and skills as well as the specific materials needed

to implement the module. Finally, there will be a web platform from which teachers will be able to download

produced and developed material, examples, videos, tutorials and literature for implementation of the modules

in their schools.

Developed modules will be piloted in secondary schools in Varaždin (the first two modules), Germany (the

third module) and Italy (the fourth module), along with the exchange of students and professors involved in the

so-called peer-learning.

As part of the first Open Forum topic, each of the representatives presented what has been done so far within

the project and how many of the colleagues and students involved in the project. They also discussed the

problems they encountered and the ways of solving and future successful achievement of the project goals. It

was agreed that a common mailing list, both for teachers and students, should be developed for easier and

more efficient communication. It has been suggested that everything should be concrete about engagement

and interaction with students: how many lessons per year should be lectures, which topics and for what age of

the student, and in which subjects (fair play ...), to address specific topics. It was also suggested that all

relevant information for the preparation of the project report to the Agency be collected on time. Then, each of

the four modules were discussed within the intellectual output 1 - making the curriculum for Ethics and its

implementation and integration into the existing curricula of different subjects. In this part, most of the work

was presented by Dr. Vojko Strahovnik from the Faculty of Theology of the University of Ljubljana.

The following was agreed:

All partners will give their feedback on the template by June 15, 2018.

The new curriculum will be completed by November 2018 so that it can be practiced in Varaždin.

At the end of the first day, all participants went for a short walk in the center of Ljubljana and then at a joint

dinner.

The second day began with Matija Mate Škerbić's presentation of the Methodological Manual for Teachers

and Students as well as critical consideration of the same. Work-related tasks are divided:

Bruno Ćurko and Matija Mato Škerbić from the Association of Small Philosophers will do most of their work.

Then Vlado Ščapec presented the work on the intellectual output 3 that was taken over by the

Elektrostrojarska škola of Varaždin and presented the project website. He instructed everything he could to

put the material, pointing out in particular the dissemination activities for which important information was to

be given: the number of news coverage on the portal or newspaper circulation, the number of people at the

dissemination conference, etc. It was also concluded that each partner on their web pages should also have

information about the project with the Erasmus + logo and EU projects under the inscription "project is funded

by EU".

Vlado Ščapec presented the proposal of the Gender Equality Module, prepared by professors from the

Elektrostrojarska škola of Varaždin - Boris Rutić, Nenad Kos, Thobias Behloul, Vlado Ščapec Finally, there

was discussion and exchange of views and practices about piloting Modules 1 and 2 in Varaždin. Many things

have been refined about the further implementation of the project and the next meeting in November in

Varaždin. The following activities, terms and persons responsible for their implementation have been agreed:

1. Students of partner schools

Students will need to develop their methods for presenting and learning content - while the professors will be

6

only supervisors and counselors. Students will talk in advance about how to process the lesson topics and

what methods to use. For such classes, they need to communicate in advance and work with each other.

Peer method comes later, through conversation about the good and bad sides of such lessons.

In every group will be students from different schools.

Students will meet earlier through skype and facebook.

Evaluation is mandatory at the end.

2. Partners

Suggest and decide on three topics for one module.

Suggest topics and subjects for cross teaching.

On the basis of the Curriculum framework "Ethics of Sport" (intellectual output O1) as well as the draft version

of the Methodology Guidelines - a tool-kit for teaching Ethics of Sport under the secondary school curriculum

(draft version of the intellectual output O2), we tested Module 1 - Intentional Rule-Breaking and Fair-Play in

Sports and Module 2 - Virtues and Flaws in Sport with different methods. The concept of the first Short-term

exchanges of groups of pupils was to use peerlearning of secondary school students from 3 partner schools

and peer-teaching of teachers from 3

partner schools that were attended in Varaždin.

In preparing and implementing Short-term exchanges of groups of pupils (Activity No. C2) the key method

was“problem-based learning (PBL)”. PBL is considered to be a student-centred pedagogy in which students

learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open-ended problem.

Students learn both thinking strategies and domain knowledge. The goals of PBL are to help students develop

flexible knowledge, effective problem solving skills, self-directed learning, effective collaboration skills and

intrinsic motivation. Working in groups, students identify what they already know, what they need to know, and

how and where to access new information that maylead to the resolution of the problem. The role of the

teachers is to facilitate learning by supporting, guiding, and monitoring the learning process. The teachers

build students' confidence to take on the problem, and encourage the students, while also stretching their

understanding.

The short –term exchange was organised and implemented in the in the following manner:

a) Each partner presented video recorded examples of the best practices concerning the Module 1 -

Intentional Rule-Breaking and Fair-Play in Sports and Module 2 - Virtues and Flaws in Sport actually used in

their country.

b) On the basis of the exemplary videos teacher made joint preparation of the Module 1 - Intentional Rule-

Breaking and Fair-Play in Sports and Module 2 - Virtues and Flaws in Sport for the teaching lessons for the

Page 8: Integrating Sports Ethics in the High School CurriculumIannuzzelli, Emilio Zambrano and Marco Fenucci from ISS Ancel Keys from Cilento in Italy, Jens Putzar, Hildegard Rieger and Joachim

8

secondary school students. Such collaborative model insisted on teachers from at least 2 schools worked

together in all phases: the Module 1 - Intentional RuleBreaking and Fair-Play in Sports and Module 2 - Virtues

and Flaws in Sport lesson planning, materials’ production and (when possible) design of relevant assessment

tools.

c) Secondary school students from each school carried out some preliminary problem-based learning /

received preliminary readings on the selected topic related to the Module 1 – Intentional Rule-Breaking and

Fair-Play in Sports and Module 2 - Virtues and Flaws in Sport.

At the methodological level, we used a coherent learner-centred approach, where learners become

responsible for their own learning and the teacher become a facilitators.

d) During the exchange/mobility, joint delivery of teaching lessons related to the Module 1 - Intentional Rule-

Breaking and Fair-Play in Sports and Module 2 - Virtues and Flaws in Sport we

carried out: - teachers from each partner described methodologies normally used in his/her country and

presented lessons related to the Module 1 - Intentional Rule-Breaking and Fair-Play in Sports and Module 2 -

by comparing and analyzing the presentation and videos,- teachers identified certain parameters and

indicators to evaluate each methodology that was used from the teachers' point of view. -2 teachers from 2

different schools delivered lessons related to the Module 1 - Intentional RuleBreaking and Fair-Play in Sports

and Module 2 to a mixed group of secondary school students from 2 schools;

- the main part of the lessons (learner-centred collaborative activity jointly facilitated by both teachers) is

delivered in the L2 (English language) to a whole group of students,

- other teachers acted as observers;

- each lesson was video-recorded;

- upon the completion of each lesson, students commented, discussed and compared the different

methodologies and developed their own evaluation grid - teachers initiated the discussion, but the main work

was carried out by the students.

Throughout different lectures we tried to test various methodological approaches:

- working in groups

- debate methods

- discussion methods

- playing games: pop quiz, role playing game

- fisherman game,

- fish bowl method

In general we can say that the 1st. Short-term exchanges of pupils was successful. All planned tasks were

done. On the next meeting in Cilento we going to discuss about mobility in Varaždin and make some

conclusion about it. This information could be important for the future development of the Curriculum

framework and Metodological kit. After the Mobility the project coordinator Mr. Vlado Ščapec kindly asked all

participant to fill Google form survey about mobility in Varaždin. Project team will be informed about the

results of the survey on the next meeting in Cilento in January 2019.

Report from Transnational meeting in Castelnuovo Cilento,

Italy- 15-16.01.2019.

The 3rd Transnational Meeting of the Erasmus + project "Integrating Ethics of Sport in Secondary School

Curriculum" was held at the IIS Ancel Keys in Castelnuovo Cilento on 15 and 16 January 2019.

The Meeting was attended by representatives of the following partners:

Elektrostrojarska škola Varaždin, Croatia: Vlado Ščapec, Tobias Behloul.

Friedrich-Woehler-Gymnasium Singen, Germany: Jens Putzar and Hildegard Rieger.

Theological Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia: Mateja Centa and Vojko Strahovnik.

ISS Ancel Keys from Cilento, Italy: Maria Masella, Maria Gabriella Giuliani, Mercedes Iannuzzelli, Filomena

Greco, Marco Fenuccio and Emilio Zambrano.

The Small Philosophy Zadar of Croatia could not attend the Meeting for some personal reasons, which were

duly communicated previously by Bruno Curko to the Croatian National Agency.

As part of the first Open Forum topic, Vlado Ščapec got to know to everyone more closely everything that this

project is carrying out in his school, in particular he expressed great satisfaction from his school as for what

concerned the previous meeting in Varaždin, where for the first time students were participating at the training

event. Internal interim evaluation and satisfaction reports of each school/other project partner were reported

by each participant. Each of the representatives of the participating school were fully satisfied as well and all

presented what has been done so far within the project in their own school, particularly the project progress in

the period June 2018- January 2019. It was also discussed the problems they had to face and the ways of

solving and ethics of sport curriculum-related expectations and goals.

It was checked the efficiency of the common mailing list activated for the project implementation, both for

teachers and students: since some misunderstandings still persist, it was agreed that each partner will clearly

define and express who, what, how and when something still missing should be developed and delivered for

easier and more efficient communication.

Dr. Vojko Strahovnik from the Faculty of Theology of the University of Ljubljana stated that very few elements

of the Curriculum framework still are missing from the schools of Germany, Italy and Croatia. An email will be

sent with all that has to be done to fix it.

As for the dissemination, all partners could present their detailed dissemination plans, which were closely

related to the expected dissemination activities listed in the application form. An email from the Faculty will be

sent to each partner, who will describe all activities already done to disseminate the Erasmus + project

"Integrating Ethics of Sport in Secondary School Curriculum" in each country.

At the end of the first day, all participants went for a short tour in Cilento area and then to a joint dinner.

The second day began with Vlado Ščapec’s presentation of the Interim Report that has been sent to the

Croatian National Agency. Till now the Interim Report hasn’t been evaluated yet. That means the project

Page 10: Integrating Sports Ethics in the High School CurriculumIannuzzelli, Emilio Zambrano and Marco Fenucci from ISS Ancel Keys from Cilento in Italy, Jens Putzar, Hildegard Rieger and Joachim

10

coordinator school is waiting for a possible visit and check to be done by the Croatian Agency. There were no

critical consideration, all seemed to be well described and developed.

The draft of the Methodological guidelines were sent by the Small Philosophy of Zadar to all partners. Since

Bruno Curko could not attend the meeting, a skype call was made to discuss the Methodological guidelines

and how to implement it. In particular Voiko made it clear that all partners should be really innovative in all IO

to be written up, published and delivered for the future dissemination of the project.

Work-related tasks were renewed: Each partner has to send his own feedback on the Intellectual Outputs

already realized.

The project web portal already implemented was showed in particular by the project coordinator, Vlado

Ščapec.

A draft of the agenda for the next meeting in Singen, Germany in March 2019 was given by Jens Putzar.

All points to be refined about the further implementation of the project were discussed and the meeting could

come to an end.

In conclusion, this Training Event was truly successful and productive because it helped all participants to

understand better the future project activities to be jointly done as well as how to further implement the IO and

the dissemination activities.
