The hazards brought about by climate change are becoming even more apparent. The sharp rise in the incidence of flooding and torrential rain in recent years has underlined the importance of a prompt response to pending dangers. Heavy rainfall, even at locations remote from flood hazard areas, can trigger flash floods and severe inundations that threaten the urban realm. This may quickly stretch the police and fire services to their limits and render them unable to handle all emergency calls. Hence the demand for solutions which – with a minimum of manpower, logistics and ancillaries – enable local residents to protect themselves and their buildings from an imminent deluge.

AQUABURG is at the cutting edge of mobile flood control. The flexible flood wall is stowed away directly at the hazard location in a concrete channel integrated in a footway, flood bank or similar structure. In case of an impending flood, the protection wall can be erected in a few simple steps and within an extremely short period. After use, it is stowed back into the concrete channel, where it remains until the next emergency.

Flood wall – tests passed with flying colours

With the support of the Institute of River and Coastal Engineering at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and the TuTech Centre for Climate Impact and Adaptation Research (KLIFF), the AQUABURG flood wall has undergone comprehensive scientific testing under near-real-life conditions in line with the SMARTeST EU research project on the testing of flood defence systems.

AQUABURG is thus one of the most thoroughly investigated mobile flood control systems on the market.

AQUABURG is designed as a self-contained system. As all components are securely joined together, nothing can be lost or stolen. There are no screws or bolts and the assembly process is straightforward, with all components simply push-fitted and fastened.

AQUABURG comprises:

• Swivelling steel posts that are fixed at the base• A high-tech waterproof membrane• Pressure-absorbent stainless-steel meshes with a structurally continuous, watertight connection to the concrete channel in the ground.

To minimize or eliminate the logistical effort – which represents the most critical time factor – flood control systems should always be stored at their place of use. In the event of flooding, AQUABURG can be erected in next to no time. After successful deployment, it is stowed back into the concrete channel. To guarantee a long and reliable service life, the flood wall can be cleaned and maintained as part of a simple drill exercise. As the system can be accommodated by installation depths of less than 80 cm, it poses no obstruction to pipes or other utility lines.

Integral flood control

Use of the complementary SMART flood warning system is recommended as a means of speeding up the response to heavy rain.

SMART, a weather-forecasting system with fully co-ordinated flood control plans, is the perfect addition to the AQUABURG flood wall.

The system starts by issuing weather alerts that are relayed to users via smartphone or PC. The independent weather station measures rainfall and water levels in the hazard area, factors in the local weather forecasts and underpins the early warning with an exact flood prediction. A flood control plan provides immediate orientation at this early stage, facilitating prompt erection of the AQUABURG wall. Once the flood has subsided, the wall is stowed back into the concrete channel.

Apart from providing information and protection, the SMART system also encourages the local population to adopt a systematic approach in the handling of flood risks.

Running through the town of Roßwein in the German Federal State of Saxony, the fast-flowing Freiberger Mulde river is regularly in danger of breaking its banks. To address the resulting risks, the authorities sought a cost-effective flood control solution which – unlike standard concrete flood walls – created no visual barriers, allowed simple erection and additionally provided for timely weather alerts. The AQUABURG flood wall was able to meet all these criteria. The installed system offers the local population prompt and reliable relief in emergencies while making no impact whatsoever on the townscape.
