Solutions for randomly developedareasWilo pressure drainage systems areperfect for areas that do not havecanalisation and it cannot be addedbecause this would be impossible or

uneconomical. Typical examples arerandomly developed areas and zoneswith difficult sites, a lack of inclines,and a groundwater level that is toohigh or topographical obstacles such as mountains or bodies of water.Pipelines with small diameters thatcan be realised much more cheaplythan free-flow canalisation are usedfor drainage.

Sewage technology: state of the artFrom a technological viewpoint, com-pletely prefabricated pumping sta-tions with Wilo EMUPORT solids sepa-ration systems are the best choice fordraining entire localities or largerindustrial and commercial complexesusing conventional free-flow canali-sation.This innovative Wilo technologyseparates the solids from sewage andguides it into separate solids separa-tion tanks. Only prepurified sewage is now able to continue through thepump into the large, combined collec-tion tank.The coarse solids have beeneliminated from the sewage by thistechnique, and in the next step thesewage is transported by the dry sumppumps and pumped downward intothe collection tank. On the way tothe outgoing pipeline, the sewageflows through the solids separationtank, pressing the solids out. After thesolids separation tank receives a finalfree flushing and cleaning, it is readyfor the next filling process. Pumpingstations from Wilo can be reconfiguredto meet individual demands on theirprocessing and performance functions.The advantages of this innovative sys-tem speak for themselves.

Economical: due to their small ball passageSince only prepurified sewage withoutcoarse solids flows through the pumphydraulics, the free ball passage of thepumps can be designed considerablysmaller than conventional ones, so thatthe pumps attain significantly higherefficiency. This leads to significantsavings on energy and thus on oper-ating costs.

Reliable: due to low risk of obstructionThe collection tank retains the solids.This prevents obstruction as well asincreasing reliability and operatingsafety . Since the inside of the pumpis protected from contact with coarsesolids, its service life is also clearlyprolonged. The result: fewer break-downs and less servicing, and muchmore efficient operation.

Easy-maintenance:due to dry sump installationSewage and solids remain in the sys-tem. The pumps are thus always dryand clean. This makes maintenancemuch more pleasant, hygienic andefficient – all of the mechanical com-ponents can be accessed quickly andeasily from the outside.

The Wilo EMUPORT solids separationsystem with dry sump pumps wasinstalled under a maintenance platformin a concrete building.

After renovating the existing pumpingstation in a concrete shaft: dry instead of wet sump pumps with the Wilo EMUPORT solids separation system.

Lauter, near Zwickau, GermanyLauter is located between Aue andSchwarzenberg, directly on the"Silver Street" in the Western ErzMountains. The dreamy city in themountains was established in the12th century and is characterised by its historical centre. The city of 5,200residents is drained by a conventionalfree-flow pipeline that guides theurban sewage to a pump station thathas an upstream rain spillway basinand is located at the lowest point ofthe city. A Wilo EMUPORT FG 2600solids separation system in rounddesign was installed. The double system is equipped with two dry sump submersible pumps from theWilo EMU FA 15.77Z series and a3.1 meter high collection reservoir. It transports the collected sewage ofthe city through a 4.2 kilometre longpipe to the central water treatmentsystem in Schwarzenberg. All pipelinesand fittings are made of PE-HD andare thus protected against corrosionand abrasion for their entire servicelife. In addition, the system is equippedwith the most modern communicationtechnology for remote control andmonitoring. This ensures that the cen-tral water treatment system is alwaysup to date on the operating statusthrough remote data monitoring andflow rate measurement. In the event of malfunction, the system can reportthe type of fault so that the operatoris immediately able to implement thecounter measures required.

Large potential savings through stateof the art macerator pumpsThe Wilo product range offers a vari-ety of pump shafts for pressuriseddrainage of single houses, completegroups of houses and even entirestreets. The sewage from the individ-ual house connections is transportedby a submersible pump to a commoncollection pressure pipe, and thenpumped directly to the nearestsewage treatment plant or sewagenetwork. Because the sewage oftenhas to travel a long distance, choosingto use a macerator pump can signifi-cantly save costs. That is why Wilopump shafts are equipped with stateof the art macerator pumps. They use modern, patented stainless steelmacerators to cut up even the coars-est particles that are part of the solidsin the sewage, so that pipe cross-sec-tions from DNA 40 are often adequate.This diameter is considerably smallerthan the cross-sections required forpressurised drainage with traditionalsubmersible pumps without macera-tors. This savings on materials –together with the smaller scale of the excavation work required wheninstalling pipes – makes pressuriseddrainage with Wilo an especially eco-nomical solution.

Economical pipe installationWilo pump sumps are connected tothe sewage treatment plant/free-flow canalisation using small PE dis-charge pipes. The small pipe diameterenables considerable cost savings in comparison with the much largerdimensioned free-flow conduits:because the pressure conduit followsthe topography of the site, it does not have to be placed in such a deepchannel.

Long-lasting, environmentallyfriendly processingWilo pressure drainage systems aredesigned to have a very long servicelife. Just like the normally used pipes,the sumps are also produced fromenvironmentally friendly PE plasticsand thus resistant to corrosion. In addition, PE cannot rot, is resistantto acids, and resists even the heaviestloads.

Wielka Wiés, near Krakow, PolandPicturesque Wielka Wiés is close toKrakow. Due to the attractive trans-portation connection to this univer-sity city steeped in tradition, evermore people are moving to the ruralidyll, so that today the communityhas 10,000 residents. However, themunicipal infrastructure does notcorrespond to Central European stan-dards by any means – which is typicalfor large parts of Eastern Europe. The explosive population growthmade modernising the sewage sys-tem in 2005 more than necessary.Pressurised drainage to the Krakowsewage system was the best solutionfrom an economic viewpoint. In addi-tion, parts of the area are very moun-tainous, which would make building a channel with steady incline impos-sible. In 2005 and 2006, a Wilo pres-surised drainage system with a totalof 250 Wilo DrainLift WS 900-typepump sumps were built. They con-sisted of a main branch and 5 sec-ondary branches with a total lengthof 3.5 kilometres. High quality Wilomacerator pumps from the Wilo DrainMTS 40/27 series ensure reliable,energy-efficient transport to anintermediate station that transportsthe sewage to the water treatmentsystem of Krakow. The success of thesystem has already been confirmedby a follow-up order. Expansion ofthe pressurised drainage network has been planned for the future.
