Definitions of Intercultural Competence

Compositional model: merely describes the characteristics (knowledge, skills, andattitudes) of Intercultural Competence (ICC)

Co-orientational model: tends to describe the components or process of a successfulintercultural interaction

Developmental model: describes ICC in terms of individual development over time

Adaptational model: combines the developmental components of the aforementionedmodels and present them in an interactional context of adapting to a foreign culture

Causal path model: attempts to integrate the characteristics of compositional models andsituate them in an interaction in which variables influence each other to predict ICC.

Intercultural Competence Assessment

• Two predominant assessment formats are used to measure ICC: surveys and portfolios

• The Inventory of Cross-Cultural Sensitivity (ICCS) of Cushner (1986) is one of the 32surveys listed; ranging in length from 9 to over 160 items; online and/or paper and pencilformat

• Majority of surveys are self-reports with Likert-scale or multiple choice items

• Self-reports based on situational judgment tests (SJT) measure an ability or competencybased on the participant’s choice of response to a hypothetical situation

• Challenges with self-reporting: experience levels and lack of exposure, future-orientedoptimism, respondent faking etc.

Page 16: Intercultural Passport Design Workshop - Friends · Intercultural Passport Design Workshop 3rd FRIENDS Meeting 8th –10th October 2019 Svay Rieng University, Cambodia This project

Intercultural Competence Assessment (2)

• Portfolios with constructed-response items

• A portfolio assessment is a collection of materials produced either by an individual overtime or scores from various assessments or both

• No standard portfolio assessment exists

• The content, platform (paper versus digital) and scoring method vary across institutionsand contexts

• Clemson University uses a digital portfolio and requires students to provide evidence ofcross-cultural awareness a universal general education requirement

Page 17: Intercultural Passport Design Workshop - Friends · Intercultural Passport Design Workshop 3rd FRIENDS Meeting 8th –10th October 2019 Svay Rieng University, Cambodia This project
