Founded in 1881 as “Meiji Law School” by Tatsuo Kishimoto, Kozo Miyagi, and Misao Yashiro
At present, large, comprehensive university with 32,500 students including 1,600 international students on 4 campuses.
The Meiji Law School based its philosophy of education on the libertarian principles of the French legal system, with "freedom and civil rights" as its guiding principles.

2009: Selected as one of the institutions for a 5-year government-funded Global 30 Project to increase the number of international students and to establish new English-medium educational programs.
2009: Established the Organization for International Collaboration.
2012: Selected as one of the institutions for a 5-year government-funded Go Global Japan Project to improve global educational capabilities and ASEAN Project.
2014: Selected as one of the institutions for a 10-year government-funded Top Global University Project.
