Reed Exhibitions is taking something of a punt with this year’s Helitech, and rivals will closely scrutinize its fi gures. Outside of Helitech, the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has an-nounced plans to review North Sea helicopter operations together with the Norwegian CAA and the Euro-pean Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). According to the CAA statement, the review “will study current operations, previous incidents and accidents and offshore helicopter fl ying in other countries to make recommendations aimed at improving the safety of off-shore fl ying.” CAA’s head of fl ight operations, Capt. Bob Jones, will lead the review, working closely with Geir Hamre, head of helicopter safety for the Norwegian CAA and will be sup-ported by industry experts and inde-pendents. The review will focus on operator decision-making and inter-

nal management; the protection of passengers and crew; pilot training and performance; and helicopter air-worthiness. The review will be pub-lished in early 2014.

The CAA announcement came a day before Avincis Group, Bristow Group and CHC unveiled plans to work together to review procedures, share best practices and improve safe-ty. The joint review will examine pro-cesses, training and fl ight operations, focusing fi rst on Europe. Other areas will include automation, emergency equipment and response, human fac-tors, manufacturing, safety commu-nication and training.

NEWSTiltrotor, X2 and X3: Different Strokes at High Speed

With three manufacturers who are developing high-speed rotorcraft represented on the panel, the Helitech Internation-al 2013 Conference provided an opportunity to gauge the differences in emphasis between the AgustaWestland AW609, Sikorsky’s X2 and Eurocopter’s X3 and their likely effects on the civil market.

Roberto Garavaglia, AgustaWestland’s senior vice president for strategy and busi-ness development, pointed to the AW609’s combination of 270-knot speed, 700 nm range and pressurized cabin that al-lows it to fl y above the weather at 25,000 feet, calling it “a phenomenal way of develop-ing the civil market into areas where today there is no possibil-ity to operate.”

Signifi cantly, Sikorsky’s sales director for Europe, Alex Sharp, did not conjure visions of X2 Technology compound coaxial helicopters serving distant rigs. “We see at least the initial market being almost totally military,” he said. “What we are really seeing driving the offshore market,” he continued, “is a focus on range as opposed to speed… So we tend to focus on that area and not so much on what X2 gives us, which is a lot of speed and performance at altitude and in really hot climates, where we see the mili-tary operating.”

In contrast, Eurocopter UK CEO Markus Steinke said that the X3 compound heli-copter concept demonstrator was aimed directly at the civil market. “It is about productiv-ity; we deliver more output in a given time for a given amount of money,” he said.

Avincis Active at HelitechLondon-based Avincis Group reached agreements with helicopter makers AgustaWestland, Bell Helicopter and Eurocopter during Helitech, as well as engine manufacturer Turbomeca.

Avincis has placed an order for up to 20 helicopters from Bell, consisting of the 429, 412 and 412EPI. The com-pany plans to use the Bell variants in air medical/life and rescue opera-tions.

The operator has also purchased fi ve helicopters from AgustaWest-land. The order includes two AW189s intended for offshore missions in the UK’s North Sea with Avincis subsid-iary Bond Aviation. The other three helicopters – one AW139 and a pair of AW169s – will support EMS opera-tions in Italy.

According to the companies, the preliminary agreements” for the fi ve helicopters are part of a wider ar-rangement for up to 16 helicopters from the AW139, AW169 and AW189 family. The helicopters will serve in various roles, including offshore, EMS, utility and SAR.

Avincis Group has purchased three Eurocopter EC225s for its subsidiary Bond Helicopters Australia. Bond will use the aircraft to support PTTEP Australasia’s activities in the Timor Sea (PTTEP Australasia is part of Thai-land’s national petroleum exploration and production company).

According to Eurocopter executive vice president of global business and services, Dominique Maudet “over 75 percent of the EC225s worldwide are now back in service.” Further empha-sizing Eurocopter’s pushback on the recent incidents, he added that “the EC225 will be a benchmark in oil and gas operations for years to come.”

Turbomeca has inked a global sup-port contract with Avincis covering engines in operation with Australian Helicopters, Bond Air Services, Bond Offshore Helicopters and Inaer. The agreement, which totals around 180 engines on 14 different helicopter types, includes Turbomeca’s Support by the Hour (SBH) program for the Bond and Inaer fl eets. Milestone Forges a New Finance Model with AgustaWestlandAnnounced at Helitech International 2013, the multi-aircraft, multi-year frame-work agreement between AgustaWestland and Milestone Aviation Group is a further indication of the industry’s acceptance of 100 percent lease fi nance as a business model and of the young fi nance compa-ny’s strengthening position of trust as a reseller for OEMs. Rotor & Wing caught up with Milestone’s managing director, Rob-ert Thor Dranitzke, at the show, where he said that the agreement involves num-bers of aircraft “in the dozens” and out-lined the philosophy that has taken the company from start-up to $1.5 billion in lease fi nancing and 100 plus helicopters placed with more than 20 operators in 23 countries in three years.

Milestone’s focus is entirely on rotor-craft and its business model began as a conservative one. “We fi nance what we call working helicopters,” noted Dranitzke. “So long as there is a con-tract behind the machine, we are happy to come in and fi nance it.”

However, as the framework agreement with AgustaWestland indicates, the company is prepared to take anticipatory positions – options and fi rm orders – on in-demand helicopter types to enable operators to react more quickly to contract opportunities. “As we have become more comfortable and got a better understanding of the market and what our customers re-quire, we have felt more comfortable taking bigger positions,” said Dran-itzke, “but it is still much the smaller portion of our business.”

To protect the value of its assets, Milestone usually insists on power-by-the-hour maintenance contracts, but not always. “If you are selling avail-ability as opposed to utilization,” he explained, “it might not make sense. But in the vast majority of cases we require tip-to-tail PBH because it gives us comfort.” —By Peter Donaldson

A range of international operators agreed on the second day of Helitech International 2013 in London that the certifi cation process stipulated by authorities to allow helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) operators to use night vision goggles (NVGs) in Europe needs to be quicker and more streamlined.

While all confi rmed that safety had to be the main consideration whether operators were conducting day or night missions, it was unani-mously agreed night operations us-ing NVGs were always safer than not using them. During the conference those speaking included representa-tives from the East Anglian Air Am-bulance (with support provider Bond Air Services), Spanish operator Inaer, DRF Luftrettung from Germany and the Norwegian Air Ambulance.

“Flying with NVGs is much better than fl ying without,” said Erik Nor-mann, manager of fl ight operations for Norwegian Air Ambulance. In 2012, Normann said that his organi-zation had fl own 7,757 fl ight hours, or which 1,716 were at night (22 percent) and 1,158 (15 percent) on NVGs. In Norway, particularly taking into account is position in the North-ern Hemisphere, darkness is always a factor in providing a service to the

population. Because of the rugged ge-ography in some parts of the coun-try, what is only a 15-minute fl ight be helicopter can be up to seven hours by car.

In terms of crew resource manage-ment (CRM), Normann said that both the pilot and HEMS crewmember in the cockpit had NVGs and that even the doctor in the back was given a hand-held device: “During a landing – all eyes count,” he said.

While the Norwegians have been operating with NVGs since 2002, the East Anglian Air Ambulance became the fi rst UK HEMS operator to certi-fi ed to use NVGs earlier this year. Bond Air Services director of fl ight operations Capt. Pete Cummings said: “East Anglia have been the fi rst to really push for night HEMS. The CAA were supportive within their regulatory framework – and always erring on the side of caution.” With the application process beginning in November 2011, a list of consider-ations to gain approval was received from the CAA a month later. The CAA eventually published its safety direc-tive in July 2012 – which included the requirement to illuminate the fi nal approach area with white light from a height of 500 feet. This required the fi tting of a Trakka A800 searchlight onto the front left hand skid. Eventu-ally, all points were satisfi ed and the fi rst night HEMS fl ight took place on May 13, 2013. The question raised at the conference was whether opera-tors might soon make use of symbol-ogy within the NVGs that would pro-vide them with fl ight information, as already practiced by military forces around the world, was generally as-sessed as a step too far given the ex-isting certifi cation diffi culties. —By Andrew Drwiega, International Bureau Chief

NEWSEurocopter’s UKInvestment Pays Off

During Helitech, Eurocopter’s Dominique Maudet, executive vice president of global busi-ness and services, said that the manufacturer’s market share in the UK “was something special in Eurocopter.”

With new president and CEO Guillaume Faury unable to fl y to London as fl ights were can-celled due to fog, Maudet hosted a press briefi ng in which he emphasized that Eurocopter was now a 50/50 helicopter manu-facturer/services company.

Markus Steinke, managing director of Eurocopter UK, said that the division had experi-enced signifi cant growth and change following the buyout from McAlpine Helicopters (November 2007) and the ac-quisition of Vector Aerospace (in June 2011). Said Steinke: “We have invested over £100 million in the UK and now have more than 1,500 people working with us. Half of the UK civil fl eet is Eurocopter. It has paid off.”

Addressing the August 23 Super Puma crash in which four people died, Maudet said Euro-copter understood the pain and sadness that the accident had caused and had been shocked by the incident. He said that while they continued to wait for the Air Accident Investiga-tion Branch (AAIB) to publicly report its fi ndings, the prelimi-nary report to date did not reveal that a “technical event” had caused the crash. “We are fully supporting the AAIB,” he confi rmed. In terms of fl ight safety, Maudet said that the topic was complex and involved issues such as the size of the cabin, the size of the doors and windows and the position of seating. “This is a real global issue and I hope it contributes toward the future safety of aircraft.” Read more online at www.rotorandwing.com

PremiAir Offers Alternative London Heliport in SurryWest London Heliport, promising to be the new location for

helicopters heading to the south east of England, is the rebranded name of PremiAir Aviation International’s Blackbushe airport in Surrey. The location is 30 miles south west of London.

Graham Avery, PremiAir chairman, was keen to position Black-bushe as a cheaper alternative to Battersea Heliport with facili-ties that would offer helicopter owners longer-term options, not only when visiting London but also when travelling abroad from one of London’s main international airports. He described this as a “Land, Park and Go” service and said that alternatives in the southeast were required.

Avery revealed that a further £250,000 had been provisioned to invest in developing the infrastructure around the fi xed-base op-erator (FBO) facility, with an emphasis on providing those fl ying

in and transiting through with whatever they need – including chauffeur driver cars into central London. The London brand agency Static Fusion, recently associated with a project for London Oxford Airport, has been engaged to contrib-ute into the project.

He said that discussions were being conducted with neighboring airport Farnborough about how the two might fi nd ways to mutually benefi t each other’s business.

Helicopters could be stored within the 50,000 square feet of hanger space either overnight of for longer periods. The company promises that “landing fees will be at least a third of the price, and include onward chauffeur travel, of its closest business aviation neighbor airport.” PremiAir’s management states that there are no restrictions on movements at the West London Heliport and opening hours are 07:00 hours to 22:00 hours, seven days a week. PremiAir is already a long established helicopter charter company. —By Andrew Drwiega

As a key maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) pro-vider with strong helicopter capabilities, Vector Aerospace found useful synergies between Helitech 2013 and the MRO Europe event held together at the ExCel confer-ence and exhibition center in London’s Docklands. This comes as the company seeks to market its international helicopter and engine component services in a more uni-fi ed manner.

“It has been useful to be able to walk both fl oors,” Vec-tor UK’s Lee Booth tells Rotor & Wing. “A lot of the meet-ings that I’ve had have been pre-arranged, so it’s nice that everyone manages to get together at one time and you can chalk off several big meetings at one event, especially as we have got such a broad supply chain and customer base.”

The UK end of Vector’s business has been promoting component overhaul at its facility at Almondbank, near Perth in Scotland, its civil MRO activity at Fleetlands in

Hampshire, southern England, and its recently inked part-nership with Sikorsky.

On September 25 during Helitech, Vector announced the handover of two Eurocopter AS332Ls to Starlite Avia-tion Group in the Middle East. The helicopters are part of Vector’s Leasing and By the Hour support program.

Vector overhauls components for Sikorsky’s S-76 series and Eurocopter’s AS350 and AS355 families along with servicing of General Electric’s CT/T58 turboshaft engines.

With facilities spread around North America including Richmond and Langley in British Columbia, Canada plus Andalusia, Alabama and Dallas, Texas in the U.S. in addi-tion to the UK shops, the company is looking to increase collaboration between its divisions and promote itself as “one Vector” at some of the bigger trade shows. —By Peter Donaldson

Reed Exhibitions has a fi ght on its hands even now. It is immediately disadvantaged by the parent com-pany’s decision to pull out of the defense sector in May 2008 when it sold the large international defense shows DSEi, ITEC and LAAD to Clar-ion Events. While the defense sector in Europe remains in recession this is not such a big problem, but when it returns (and it will), other organiz-ers will be free to add the military element into their marketing mix. If they have grown suffi ciently by that time, and Reed has not built up He-litech from where it is today, then its long-term business success will be challenged.

There are several factors that Reed needs to quickly improve. Buy-in from big business was at best, half-hearted. From a reporting point of view, it was depressing that the venue was not used to break industry-wide news stories at the event. On the fi rst day, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced that it was to “review offshore heli-copter operations in the North Sea.” It will cooperate with the Norwegian CAA and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). With such a wealth of operators gathered in one location, and despite the fact that it is based a few miles away in central London, nobody thought of making the an-nouncement directly to the industry (and a signifi cant number of the spe-cialist aviation press) who were at Ex-Cel for three days. What an opportu-nity missed to begin the review!

Equally culpable in missing an op-portunity was the Bristow Group an-nouncement, supported by Avincis and CHC Helicopter, that all three “have launched a review of safety practices that will deepen their commitment to share best practices and consistently operate at the highest possible level of safety. The three companies leading this effort will reach out to other he-licopter operators to encourage them

to join the review group.” Even better, further down the statement it reveals that the group will initially “focus on European operational procedures,” al-though it will “explore and adopt best practice from the global industry and scale its review accordingly.” It affi rms that: “It is anticipated the review will be conducted under the auspices of European Helicopter Operators Com-mittee (EHOC).”

During the three days of Helitech, speaking participants included repre-sentatives from: the chairman of the European Helicopter Association; the Rulemaking Offi cer for EASA Flight Standards; and the Certifi cation Di-rector for the EASA, not to mention a host of OEM representatives and vari-ous operators, all of whose experience could have been sought.

An opportunity to launch both of these initiatives was squandered. Was it because those making the announce-ment weren’t aware of Helitech, or thought it did not hold enough sig-nifi cance? Conversely how strong and wide was Reed’s messaging that should have left no doubt that this was the right venue from which to make these announcements?

The European Helicopter Associa-tion (EHA) also has a role to play in how Helitech develops. It needs to get behind the event how that Reed has made this commitment. I have to say that the conference agenda for all three days was regulations-heavy with attendance patchy. The session on the use of night vision goggles (NVGs) among European HEMS operators was one of the best-attended sessions (see story on page 6). The keynote speech on the fi rst morning was more a review of matters in progress that a rousing cheer to kick the conference off.

Work must be done to make next year’s event in Amsterdam (October 14-16, 2014) a more dynamic and en-gaging occasion for all concerned. No-body needs a repeat of the decline of Helitech Portugal.

NEWSNew Entrants Could Take Market Share

According to Dr. Andrew Black, director and head of analysis at Hawk Intelligence Source Management, Russian manufacturers will produce the largest number of heavy helicopters between 2013 and 2022, followed by Sikorsky, Boeing and NH Industries. Black also warned that es-tablished western companies’ market share could also come under threat from new entrants to the world market, includ-ing India’s HAL and China’s AVIC, with the light military sector providing them with early opportunities. In a mildly pessimistic presentation on the outlook for the rotorcraft sector – upcoming opportunities and challenges – Black also told Helitech conference attendees that the light civil aircraft sector has the brightest prospects over the 10-year forecast period, fol-lowed by the military medium/heavy sector, although even this will be weaker as the wars in southwest Asia wind down.

Demand for medium/heavy aircraft in the civil sector will continue to be affected by the recession, he said.

However, the industry panel took issue with some of these generalizations. AgustaWest-land’s Roberto Garavaglia argued that the company’s more detailed model showed that the rapid change in the oil and gas support business, for example, with rigs moving up to 300 nm offshore, would drive the market for more capable aircraft. Bell’s director of marketing and sales support, Chuck Evans, argued that the need to replace 10,000 to 12,000 fi rst generation fi ve-seat turbine helicopters is a big opportunity for its new SLS. —By Peter Donaldson

Trakka, Thommen in the SpotlightNew competitors have recently enlivened a market dominated by Boe-ing’s Spectrolab, and Helitech 2013 provided Rotor & Wing with an op-portunity to examine Thommen’s HSL-1600 and Trakka Corp.’s Trakka-beam A800 (shown here) – two very different solutions to the same set of problems.

The HSL-1600 looks the more conventional of the two with its large diameter parabolic refl ector that forms the output of the 1,600-watt short arc xenon bulb into a beam. A self-contained unit, it has no separate components except the hand control unit and associated cabling. Step-per motors move it in elevation and azimuth and digital control enables faster movement in all directions, “keep out” zones to protect heat-sen-sitive aircraft equipment such as antennas and precise coordination with camera pods. It can also be removed and reinstalled without realignment, says the company.

Its other party trick is an integral IR fi lter that slides around the bulb housing on command, the whole mechanism remaining inside the searchlight housing.

The Trakkabeam A800 is slimmer in profi le, a clue to a different operating principle. Instead of a large diameter refl ec-tor, it shines the short arc xenon bulb’s light through a system of lenses. This, says European sales manager Christian Steward, provides a much more uniform distribution of light within the beam, eliminating the dark spot at the center and the peripheral fade associated with refl ector searchlights.

Another unique feature of the A800 is its small diameter fi lter wheel that contains, in addition to an IR fi lter, an am-ber fi lter to improve penetration of fog and a visible red fi lter. The latter eliminates the vertigo sensation that looking up at white light can induce in people working underneath the helicopter and having to look up at it, according to Mick Rennie, key account and service support manager for Europe.

Thommen is more forthcoming about prices, quoting around 40,000 Swiss Francs for an HSL-1600 with white light and hand control only, rising to 70,000 SF for one with an IR fi lter and map/camera integration software. Including the hand controller it weighs 30 kg. Those prices do not include installation, which is aircraft specifi c and on which the company is working with integrators.

Trakka doesn’t quote prices but says that the A800 is “competitive,” although slightly more expensive than older vari-ants of Spectrolab’s lights when considering a basic hand-controlled white light. Searchlight and gimbal weigh 17.88 kg with a typical system weight of 28.43 kg including all modules.

The company has deals in place with AgustaWestland and Eurocopter to offer the A800 as an approved option and is working with Bell and Sikorsky. Responding to customer feedback, Trakka is soon to open UK service center. Alongside others in France, Germany and Italy, units need never leave Europe for servicing. —By Peter Donaldson For more visit www.trakkacorp.com

Milestone Aviation Group (Stand J50) has closed on a $300-million credit facility, to be used for acquiring and leasing helicopters valued at $400 million to affiliates of Bristow Group Inc. The assets include Sikorsky S-92, Eurocopter EC225 and AgustaWest-land AW189 and AW139 types.

Said Milestone Chairman and CEO Richard Santulli: “We structured this transaction with Bristow and worked together to bring it to completion. The proceeds will allow us to contin-ue to support Bristow while diversify-ing our sources of capital.”

Milestone’s capital strategy is fo-cused on developing diverse sources of funding to conservatively grow its business and best meet the needs of the helicopter community. The com-pany has more than $500 million in equity capital and has raised $1.8 bil-lion in debt commitments from lead-ing banks in North America, Europe and Asia, as well as insurance compa-nies and the US capital markets. The lessor is also financing a Eurocopter EC225 for Blueway Offshore Norge AS. The Norwegian-registered aircraft will be used for crew change missions to offshore oil and gas platforms in the North Sea. The delivery is the first since the aircraft was cleared for a full return to flight. For more visit www.milestoneaviation.com

NEWSSpidertracks Goes on Safety Watch

New Zealand’s Spidertracks (Stand D70) is celebrating its return to Helitech with a stand featuring its range of portable GPS tracking units, including the newly released Spider S5. When carried aboard a heli-copter, Spider relays position information to its website (also being shown), from where op-erators can view aircraft tracks in real time and receive SOS alerts to phone and e-mail. And with the newly released Spi-dertxt application, aircrew can SMS information to colleagues on the ground. A key feature of Spidertracks is ‘Watch’. When activated, the website waits for position reports to be received. Should these stop, it automati-cally sends out SOS messages to any number of individuals set up in the account. Unlike an ELT, which needs to survive an impact, the Spidertracks system does not need the device to function after an impact.

Rated as carry-on equipment, the Spider does not require a type certificate. It is designed to be simple to use because, as Spi-dertracks spokesman Luke Mc-Carthy says, “in an emergency people shouldn’t have to think about what to do; it should just happen.” For more visit www.spidertracks.com

Sikorsky Aircraft (Stand E60) will pro-mote its Matrix Technology research program, launched during the sum-mer to develop systems and software that will improve flight safety for all types of VTOL aircraft.

Matrix Technology aims to give both rotary and fixed-wing VTOL air-craft the level of system intelligence needed to complete complex mis-sions with minimal human oversight, even at low level.

“VTOL pilots increasingly will be-come mission managers (and) will feel comfortable letting the aircraft fly itself,” says Mark Miller, Sikorsky’s vice president of research and engi-neering.

“Matrix will provide order-of-magnitude improvements in system intelligence to ensure high levels of

reliability, and ultimately make un-manned missions by helicopters and VTOL aircraft of all sizes (more) af-fordable.”

One ambition is to transform the loss rate for unmanned aircraft, cur-rently averaging one per 1,000 hours, to one per 100,000. “Robust architec-ture, multi-level contingency man-agement and advanced system intel-ligence algorithms will enable this transformation,” said Miller.

An S-76 is dedicated to the rapid flight testing of software and hard-ware, including multi-spectral sen-sors, that were previously restricted to the systems integration labs at Sikorsky’s Connecticut headquarters. When not in flight, the aircraft can be configured as its own simulator to develop and test autonomy software and hardware. For more informa-tion, visit www.sikorsky.com

NEWSDonaldson Filters Of-fer Salt-Free Diet for Various Applications

Visit Stand L41 to discover how Donaldson Aerospace & Defense’s Inlet Barrier Filter (IBF) systems keep corrosive salt away from your engines. Salt-laden environments degrade a turboshaft engine’s perfor-mance, raise maintenance costs and impair helicopter capa-bilities. Ingested salt combines with the sulfur by-product of the combustion process and tur-bine heat to corrode blades and other components, and increase exhaust gas temperatures. This can hamper missions that feature low-flying and hover maneuvers over open ocean, coastal regions and inshore regions – from firefighting, off-shore transport and search and rescue (SAR) to anti-submarine and port-security patrols. Subse-quent engine washing needs to be aggressive and maintenance and overhaul costs climb. Re-cent testing demonstrated that Donaldson filters are highly ef-fective at stopping salt particles at the surface and at protecting the healthy performance of your engines. With a 4,500-hour life, they are available factory-direct or by retrofit to a wide range of helicopters. Read more at www.donaldson.com

Speakers from EASA, SESAR and CHC to Headline Helitech 2013 Conference

Conference Highlights

A three-day rotorcraft conference will be one of the main draws at this year’s Helitech (September 24-26), being staged for the first time at the ExCeL in London, UK. It is being run in association with the European Helicopter Association (EHA).

The theme for the opening session is “The Future for the Rotorcraft Sector.” Vittorio Morassi, Chairman of the European Helicopter Association (EHA), will moderate the session, with the keynote address being delivered by Dr. Norbert Lohl, certification director of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), who will address the fu-ture in terms of opportunities and challenges, put into perspective by examining European initiatives and the regulatory environment.

Following this Carlo Borghini, deputy executive direc-tor of the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) Joint Undertaking, will discuss SESAR initiatives and milestones, including: ‘the progressive adoption of enabling technology to 2020 and beyond; industry/OEM collaboration in design and manufacture of low-cost, low-power, light weight communications and navigation and surveillance equipment to encourage early adoption; certification standards and those best-equipped and best-served in certain types of airspace.”

Sigmund Lockert, deputy manager of flight operations at CHC Helicopter, will then address the Single European Sky as it affects the rotorcraft sector. The EHA has been rep-resenting the rotorcraft users in some of the 300 projects within SESAR’s program. Outcomes will affect rotorcraft operations both operationally and in terms of equipment.

The final speakers are Marc Torres, air navigation con-sultant at Pildo Labs, who will examine the ongoing “im-

plementation of IFR procedures for helicopter op-erations using GPS and EGNOS” – allowing pilots to keep flying in low visibility conditions.

The closing speaker, Capt. Carlos de la Cruz, HEMS pilot at INAER, will close with an operator’s perspective on projects in which INAER is involved and INAER’s interest in deploying IFR procedures using GPS and EGNOS.

Night-time Helicopter Emergency Operations is the theme for the second day of the Helitech In-ternational conference and it will be moderated by Gerry Hermer, aviation consultant at East An-glian Air Ambulance (EAAA).

Tim Page, chief executive at EAAA, will open the first session. His organization “recently became the first emergency service operation to be granted permission to fly during the hours of darkness. He will explain the process that led to that decision. A European perspective will be given by Capt. Carlos de la Cruz, who will focus on Spanish night-time operations including the use of NVGs.

During the afternoon the agenda changes again, this time to Rulemaking - Open Issues moderated by the Brit-ish Helicopter Association’s (BHA) chief executive Peter Norton. This will include operations and flight crew li-censing rules relevant for helicopter operations. Peter Moeller, flight operations manager, Rotor Wing at Lux-embourg Air Ambulance, will then present “The chal-lenges ahead – Flight & Duty Time Limitations” followed by Gerhard Wittmann of ADAC discussing “The Chal-lenges Ahead – Helicopter Emergency Medical Services and Public Interest Sites.”

The theme on the final day will be “Business Chal-lenges and Opportunities.” Speakers include Dr. Andrew Black, director and head of Analysisat Hawk Associates, who will present a market forecast for the rotorcraft sec-tor looking at sales, values, after-market as well as sector trends and new sector/market opportunities. A session and subsequent panel on “Financing the Future” will in-clude Aoife O’Sullivan, partner at Kennedys Aviation; Ja-son Kmiecik, chief appraiser at HeliValues; and Andrew Woolfson, vice president for Europe, Middle East & Af-rica at AirFinance.

Audience participation will be encouraged through panel discussions and Q&A sessions.

Rotor & Wing International Bureau Chief Andrew Drwiega (shown sitting at far left) chaired the 2011 Helitech Conference, which focused on the role of the offshore wind farm industry.

(Continued from Page 1)Then, in 2010, the final Portuguese experiment heralded something of a coup: original show director Sue Bradshaw was replaced by a team from the Reed Exhibitions.

Immediately after Helitech 2011, the decision was made to forsake tranquil Duxford for the throbbing heart of London.

If as a seasoned visitor you have never been to ExCel, in the capital’s east end and in sight of the Olympic stadium, you will feel right at home. It is like every other convention center in the world. You can expect easy access to lots of accommodation, proper toilets, potentially reliable wi-fi connections and plenty of food outlets.

Owned by an Abu Dhabi firm, ExCel is marketed as London’s largest exhibition venue. It boasts six hotels with 1,400 rooms, 3,700 parking spaces and a full 100,000 square meters (more than 1 million square feet) of rentable space. Helitech will take up less than a quarter of this area and, by the way, will share the rest with a conference and exhibition on MRO and Europe’s largest fiber-optic communications event.

So familiar old Helitech faces something of an acid test. How will the 2013 attendance figures stack up? Exhibitors have been promised a lot. Success will prove a very big point for Reed. It will do much to ensure the show’s survival and, incidentally, serve as a testament to the resilience of the rotorcraft sector.

If they are disappointed, will Reed bear faith for another two years? Or will the likes of Heli UK Expo, AeroExpo UK, the European Helicopter Show and The Helicopter Show get the opportunity to fight over the scraps?

Not Just an Aircraft CoverFrom the Mediterranean island of Corsica comes Aerobache (Stand P19), a specialist provider of protective covers for airframes and canopies.

The fabrics for these covers are not only anti-UV treated, but they constitute a genuine barrier to ultra-violet ray penetration, thereby preventing damage to Perspex canopies as well as protecting aircraft upholstery. They are also 100 percent waterproof.

The covers are fleece-lined to avoid damage and scratching from seams, and are light in color to reflect the heat that can damage instruments and deform canopies (also available in green for military aircraft). Fabrics are lightweight for portability and the cutting process ensures that each element fits tightly and will not flap or rub in the wind. Engine exhausts are protected with heat-resistant fabrics.

All the elements are removable and are secured by easy-to-fit Velcro straps to ensure the best possible fit, thereby protecting against wind and ensure water run-off without pooling. The seams are sealed with a special resin to ensure they too are watertight. For more information visit www.aerobache.com

Fastfin “Pays for Itself” on BellsEASA has certified BLR Aerospace’s FastFin tail rotor enhance-ment and stability system for the Bell 412 series. The approval adds to those already held for the Bell 204, 205, and 212 models. Meet with BLR at Stand D30 during the show.

BLR’s flagship FastFin enables performance improvements in useful load, wind azimuth tolerance and hover stability for Bell medium variants.

“European operators have been asking for this certification and we are pleased to further expand the reach of this remark-able technology,” said Dave Marone, vice president of sales and marketing for BLR Aerospace. “With FastFin installed, Bell 412

operators can realize significant increases in useful load, in some cases as much as 1,250 pounds.”Operators can also expect a return on their investment in FastFin. Says Marone: “Helicopters can carry more while

flying the same number of hours, or accomplish the same amount of work in fewer flight hours. It’s a powerful profit-ability lever.”

During Helitech, Bell medium operators should visit the BLR’s stand (#D30) to pick up a return on investment (ROI) analysis customized for their own fleets. It will illustrate the payback period and the savings they can expect in subsequent years.

Bell 212s are popular throughout Europe – BLR estimates that more than 100 Bell 204s, 205s and 212s are active,

alongside several hundred additional AgustaWestland and Bell mediums. BLR is completing STCs for those aircraft. In 2010, Bell Helicopter made FastFin standard equipment on the new Bell 412EP and, today, more than 550

FastFin systems are operating worldwide, supporting missions ranging from airborne law enforcement and HEMS to heli-skiing and offshore oil transport.

The system includes two parallel stall strips on the tail-boom and a reshaped vertical fi n. The strips optimize air-fl ow around the tail-boom, dramatically improving tail rotor effi ciency and wind azimuth tolerance. The complete system reduces operating costs, cycle fatigue in structures and demands on the tail rotor’s rotating components. For more information visit www.blraerospace.com

Breeze-Eastern’s Focus on Customer SupportSteady improvements in overhaul and repair turnaround times at Breeze-Eastern (Stand K21) represent an important element of a broader customer support improvement initia-tive, according to the company. Breeze-Eastern is improving turnaround times by more than 50 percent over the past year, while overhauling its Customer Support organization with new leadership, an expanded team and a new 24-hour support line.

The improved turnaround times “are the result of a long-term, sustained effort,” noted Breeze-Eastern President Brad Pedersen (shown here). “Our more recent efforts have been to invest in staff and material necessary to respond even more rapidly and further im-prove the customer experience.”

A new customer service phone number allows operators to speak directly with a Breeze-Eastern expert who can help or direct the call to the appropriate support, 24 hours a day.

“The key is being proactive and responsive to customer requirements,” said VP Contracts and Customer Support Mike Koons. “We need to demonstrate change and let customers experience (the) improvements fi rst-hand.” For more information visit www.breeze-eastern.com

Lead-Acid Makes a ComebackConcorde Battery (Stand G70) has secured FAA, Transport Canada and Brazilian approvals to replace the standard nickel cadmium battery in the AgustaWest-land AW139 with a higher capacity sealed lead acid device. The move comes as a response to feedback from AW139 operators concerned with slow engine starts from the standard Ni-Cad power source. The lead acid substitute is con-structed with additional plates and designed for increased cranking power, faster starts and less engine wear.

Concorde sealed lead acid batteries are claimed to be a more economical solution to Ni-Cd, “with no maintenance requirements and reduced cost per flight hour.” Sealed lead acid technology does not have a memory and does not require unique charging equipment. The batteries are HAZMAT exempt, proven safe and reliable with no risk of thermal runaway. For more informa-tion visit www.concordebattery.com

Introducing Bearpaw from DARTDART Aerospace (Stand K60) has launched a Bearpaw Kit for the BK117/EC145, to provide balance and stability when landing or taking off in soft terrain. With a utility basket for the types ready to go as well, the company says it is opening up the possibilities for BK117 operators, making it easier for them to bid on utility contracts. Great Slave Helicopters President Jeff Denomme says that DART listens. “(The team) works closely with GSH to provide superior products that will help us complete our missions safely and efficiently.”

Bearpaw is made of high-density polymer that resists cracking, chipping and breaking, and its one-piece machined construction ensures consistent and de-liberate load transfer. Bearpaw has received approval from Transport Canada

and EASA, with FAA approval, “expected shortly.” For more information visit www.dartaero.com

Gama Spreads Its WingsTwo years after moving into Fairoaks Airport – that green and pleasant field to the southwest of Heathrow Airport – the helicopter division of Gama Aviation (Stand E71) boasts a full set of approvals and a strategy to win over the corporate owner. According to Harry Lees, managing director, “with nine Sikorsky S-76s under our care we are already the largest service center for the type in the UK. We currently maintain a single AW139 and are actively targeting both those and its larger cousin, the AW169.” Located a mere ten minutes flight time from London’s Battersea Heli-port, Fairoaks has always been a favorite for helicopter activity. The familiar Alan Mann Group is long-since gone but Gama Engineering, which took over most of the AM facilities and brought in a new management team, is now es-tablished as an EASA Part 145 maintenance facility and FAA-approved repair station. Among other approvals it holds military DAOS (with its civil equivalent Part 21J) Part M continuing airworthiness and Part 21G production.

Regular Gama helicopter clients include Starspeed, Castle Air, TAG (at nearby Farnborough) and, through prime contractor FBHeliservices, the Army Air Corps at Middle Wallop.

Construction on a new 50,000-square-foot hangar was due to start at show-time, with completion scheduled for next summer. For more information visit www.gamaengineering.co.uk

Stansted. An EC145 is based in the South of France and another EC145 and an AS365N3 fly from two of the largest private yachts in the world.

“We manage a team of twenty pilots and technicians from the Isle of Man,” Watson continues. “It balances expe-rienced IFR captains, with extensive multi-crew operating time, with junior co-pilots (albeit commercial rotary with instrument ratings). I am keen to provide opportunities for inexperienced aircrew and, with client support, this we are successfully doing.”

Watson adds that the company operates globally, “from London, Germany, South of France, Caribbean and this past year, New York and California. Our operations are dictated by the positions of the yachts that we fly from.”

Premiair: Back from the BrinkUK operator Premiair (Stand G30) plans to make a splash at ExCel, unveiling a new CEO and management team and aiming to re-establish itself as a high-end helicopter charter and management provider. For long the butt of industry speculation that it was close to extinction, the business has emerged from six months of financial reorganization with a single UK presence (at Blackbushe Airport, to the west of London) and news of further developments.

Chairman and CEO Graham Avery explains that, “we have consolidated our maintenance and support services, including AOC, Part 145 Engineering, airworthiness, design and modification, here at Blackbushe. We will continue to offer an extensive range of premium executive helicopter charter and management services, as well as pilot train-ing and the provision of pilots to police air support units.”

In addition, he continued, “we have acquired an international training organization, to be known as PALS, which boasts the most comprehensive library of aviation computer-based training content in the world.”

Premiair has renamed its helicopter site at Blackbushe the West London Heliport, which will offer its VIP customers fuel, short and long term parking, hangar space, aircraft cleaning – and a full concierge and limousine service to Lon-don. It is seeking a long-term sponsor for the facility, which will operate independently from the Premiair name

Concludes Avery: “The Premiair brand has long been synonymous with quality of service, reliability and trust. (We now have) the vision and resources to provide our customers with an unparalleled range of products and services.” For more information visit www.premiair-aviation.com

iew Q&A With Turbomeca CEO Oliver AndriesOlivier Andries, CEO of Turbomeca (Stand C20), spoke with Rotor & Wing in the lead-up to Helitech 2013 to find out what the engine OEM is bringing to the show and other recent developments.

By Andrew Parker, Editor-in-Chief

Rotor & Wing: What is your focus at Helitech?

Olivier Andries: Three engines are going to be at the booth. The first is the Makila engine, which powers the Super Puma, EC225 and EC725 heli-copters, many for the offshore and military markets.

The second line is the RTM322, which is a big step forward for us. We have announced the acquisition of the Rolls-Royce share of this pro-gram, which is a key element for our developing strategies.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is going to be one of our most im-portant customers. I would say very clearly, as important to us as the French MoD.

The UK MoD is operating more than 400 engines with their fleet of AgustaWestland AW101 Merlins and Westland WAH-64 Apaches, and we also supply the Makilas on the Mk2 Pumas, so with such a fleet, satisfying the UK MoD means a lot to us, which is one of the main reasons why we’re coming to Helitech.

The third engine is the Arrius, more specifically the 2R variant, which is going to power the Bell short light single (SLS) platform, following the

announcement at the Paris Air Show. Bell is going to communicate about their short light single, so this is go-ing to also be an important part of Helitech.

Rotor & Wing: How did the relationship with Bell Heli-copter come about?

Andries: It’s meaningful, of course for us and I think for Bell, for one very simple reason – we have never worked with Bell so far, and both of us have more than 50 years of ex-perience in the helicopter industry. We’ve been working primarily with Eurocopter, and Bell has been mainly working with Rolls-Royce, GE and Pratt & Whitney.

How did it happen? Well, first of all, our image with the operators in terms of support performance has improved significantly due to our efforts in the last five years, and so that’s a big point because support is a key element of Bell’s brand, and so it was a prerequisite for connecting with them.

We are investing in the future of our product line, and for us, it’s im-portant for our partners to know that this partner will still be there 30 years from now. That was also a key ele-ment of the decision process.

Now for us, very clearly, we have

been looking forward to working with Bell, and so we have the ap-petite to seize this opportunity. A company like Turbomeca needs to have a diversified portfolio of heli-copter manufacturer customers. For us it was a multi-use objective not to put all our eggs in one basket –it’s as simple as that.

Rotor & Wing: Do you foresee teaming with Bell on other future projects?

Andries: The hope is that this part-nership will grow.

Rotor & Wing: What are your plans for the RTM322?

Andries: It’s going to bring us in-creased competencies in the hot box of the engine. This will enable us to accelerate our time-to-market in de-veloping a commercial product line for heavy helicopters, typically for the offshore market, and so the plan is to develop this in the not-too-dis-tant future.

We refer to the short-term devel-opment as the TS2500, or 2,500 hp engine for commercial applications. And in the medium-term future, we’ll develop a 3,000 hp commercial engine.

The plan is to offer to the market

Turbomeca CEO Interview

an alternative to the T700 and CT7 from GE. So the alternative to the T700 is the RTM322 as it is, and with the commercial product line that we plan to develop, we want to offer an alternative to the CT7, the engine of the Sikorsky S-92, which will power the Bell 525 and the AW189.

Rotor & Wing: What were the highlights of your trip to Mos-cow in August?

Andries: We announced a repair and overhaul license agreement with a company named Ural Works of Civil Aviation, which is based in Ural, for the repair and overhaul of Turbomeca engines that are going to be fitted on Russian helicopters for the Russian markets.

Speaking about Russia, we have a growing partnership with Russian Helicopters that is becoming more and more active. We are positioned on two platforms, the Kamov Ka-226 – a light twin-engine helicopter with the Arrius engine – and the Ka-62, which is a seven-ton aircraft that is going to be powered by the Ardiden 3.

The Kamov Ka-62 was unveiled as a real aircraft for the first time dur-ing MAKS, and it’s going to perform its first flight two months from now [November 2013].

Kamov has already announced two orders, one from Atlas Taxi Aereo for 14 aircraft [seven firm and seven op-

tions] and another from a Colombian company called Vertical de Aviacion for five [as part of an order that also included five Mi-171A1s]. There will also be orders within Russia.

Rotor & Wing: What’s the timeline for the Kamov Ka-62 development?

Andries: First flight will take place within two months. Engine certifi-cation is going to happen over the course of 2014. Aircraft certification is going to occur sometime during 2015, and entry into service is tar-geted for end of 2015/beginning of 2016.

Rotor & Wing: Is this just the beginning of the partnership with Russian Helicopters?

Andries: Hopefully yes, we are building on our relationship with them. There are strong competencies. They are a strong player in the heli-copter markets, and currently part of their business is international. So they want to expand that, and so far, so good. Yes indeed, we are discuss-ing other opportunities with them. But it’s too soon for me to elaborate more precisely.

Rotor & Wing: What is the latest with the bank of on-line services and technologies (Boost) program?

Andries: The development is most-ly completed, we are now in the first test stage with IBM, which is our software integrator, and six operators who decided to get involved with the pilot phase [Advanced Helicop-ters, CHC, Helicopters Italia, Helijet, Heli-Union and Milestone Aviation Group] because they are very much interested and enthusiastic to be our Boost partner.

They want to start working on that platform and realize the value of those online services. Basically, Boost is going to provide to our customers an online configuration manage-ment system.
