I – INTRODUCTION Welcome to Lyon: Heart of Europe!

ISARA-Lyon is located in Lyon, in the south-east of France, in a very dynamic environment close to companies, research centers and professionals working in agriculture, food industry, rural development and environment sectors. The second-ranking city in France in regard to its number of students, Lyon possesses a rich cultural and gastronomic tradition and an ‘old town’ which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Our lively city will offer you an exceptional quality of life. Studying in Lyon is indeed an opportunity for the city’s 130,000 students to take advantage of fascinating sites and events, including the evening parties organized on barges, the renowned Light Festival (Fête des Lumières), the international Dance Festival (Biennale de la Danse), the Nuits de Fourvière music, dance and theatre festivals held outdoors in an ancient Roman Amphitheatre, or, if you prefer, free organized roller-blading tours offered every Friday to discover Lyon by night… Apart from culture, gastronomy and sports, Lyon is also a big city which has remained convivial and is easy to explore on foot. You will have the chance to take part in a variety of leisure activities, thanks to Lyon’s favorable situation near the mountains and the sea. The natural diversity of this area (Mediterranean and temperate climate, plains and mountains) provides easy access to a wide range of activities related to agriculture and food: various crop products (fruit, cereal plants, vines, and vegetables), cattle breeding, and many other activities which are strongly linked to a huge network of food-processing industries. ISARA-Lyon is situated at AGRAPOLE, an excellence cluster created by Rhône-Alpes local authorities, specialized in agriculture and food, which includes over fifty professional organizations working in these sectors.

II – THE INSTITUTE

A - GENERAL INFORMATION ISARA-Lyon was created in 1968 to train students to become managers specialized in agriculture. ISARA-Lyon delivers an engineer diploma (master level diploma accredited by French State), international masters and professional bachelors. From its creation, rural development has been an important part of ISARA higher education and research activities. In the 1980’s, ISARA’s fields of activity expanded further to include domains in relation with agricultural marketing and management, agrifood technologies and the environment. New curricula were created, among which the vocational engineering training (MSc level), a specialized post-master diploma, a professional Bachelor of Sciences, engineering training in apprenticeship (MSc level), 2 MSc in Agroecology and, 1 MSc in Sustainable Food Systems. Applied research, study, consulting and expertise activities have also been developed by ISARA-Lyon in the last 20 years. These activities play a very important role in our higher education programmes by improving professors’ skills, creating linkages with professional and scientific stakeholders, developing ISARA’s reputation, among other benefits. ISARA-Lyon develops its higher education and R&D partnership in the Provence-Côte-d’Azur area with the integration of ISEMA (Institut Supérieur Européen de Management Agroalimentaire) and also by being a member to the “Fruits & Vegetables” Cluster. In April 2007, ISARA-Lyon moved to the Gerland district, an area which has gained importance in the city due to scientific and biotechnological development.

From the Lyon-Part-Dieu station to ISARA-Lyon: At Part-Dieu Station, take the “Vivier Merle” exit to find the subway station. Take the subway line B (blue) toward “Gare d’Oullins” Get off the subway at “Stade de Gerland” Take the exit “Parc Relais TCL” (up two flights of stairs) Walk straight 50 meters; then turn on your right and cross a big parking lot. 2. Registration deadline Once your application has been accepted by ISARA-Lyon, you must send your Learning Agreement two months before classes begin.

You must have a bachelor’s degree to study at ISARA-Lyon. You will then be able to study at a master level during the 4

th (M1) or the 5

th year (M2).

It is also important to have a good command* of French and English for courses taught in these languages. (*Level B1 in the http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/resources/european-language-levels-cefr)

III – PRACTICAL INFORMATION

A - BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL: FORMALITIES

Once selected and before your arrival, please contact Ms. Sigolène VERNERET at the International Relations Office: +33 427 85 85 10 - student@isara.fr to let her know when you will be arriving (date - time - place) so that she can organize to pick you up if needed. It is also important to contact your coordinator in your home university for administrative formalities such as visa, insurance… Please send per email these documents with your application form: (Application form to be downloaded here) The Learning agreement signed by you and your coordinator. A copy of your passport or national identity card (for European Union citizens). A copy of your birth certificate (If you are non-European it is necessary to come to France with your original birth

certificate). For some French administration, you will need to have a certified translation. See below the list of sworn translators: http://www.ca-lyon.justice.fr/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=98&Itemid=459

A curriculum vitae. A letter of intent. The accommodation application form signed. The certificate of knowledge of French language and English language. A proof of your insurance form with your civil liability and repatriation insurance.

A copy of your European health insurance card for EU students. A copy of your bachelor diploma. Grades from the last 3 years. 1 scanned picture in .jpeg format in order to prepare your student card. The international relations office and the student union will: Help you to fill in any additional documents necessary for your stay in France. Organize an appointment with a bank so that you can open a French bank account and subscribe the mandatory

insurance covering your civil liability and rental risks (necessary before entering your room in the residence hall). Help you with the procedures related to residence permits, if needed.

B - IMMIGRATION: VISA If you are planning to pursue an academic project at ISARA-Lyon for a period longer than 3 months, you MUST apply for a

student visa. The student visa is MANDATORY for non-European students who come to study in France.

/!\ Depending on the country you live in, you may need to complete the Campus France online application

process BEFORE you start your visa application. For more information on the relevant countries, please check appendix 2.

• You must schedule an in-person appointment at the closest French consulate via its official website. We encourage you

to book your appointment at least 6 to 8 weeks prior departure. Your visa appointment at a French consulate must take

place no more than 90 days before, and at least 2 weeks prior, your departure to France.

/!\ Please note that sometimes it may be up to four weeks until the next appointment is available, especially in

summer.

• Go to the consulate for a visa interview. It is required to appear in person. The main documents to supply are:

- Your passport (the validity of the passport must correspond to the duration of the visa requested).

- ISARA attestation of enrolment.

- Proof of income.

Depending on the country, other documents can be required.

• Once you’re in France, if relevant, you must register with the local immigration office (Office Français de l’Immigration

et de l’Intégration - OFII). Please check your local consulate’s website to see if you must do so. If so, make sure you

validate your student visa at the local immigration office within a few weeks after you arrival.

C - LIVING COSTS

The following is the expected average monthly budget for students under 28 years old staying at Public Crous Residence for 2014-15:

D - ACCOMODATION

There is no student hall on ISARA-Lyon campus. See below the different possibilities: (More information on the appendix below)

CROUS Student Hall: Résidence André ALLIX, Résidence Benjamin DELESSERT Résidence La MADELEINE /!\ You cannot make a booking yourself for these residences. You must send your Application Housing filled in and signed to Sigolène VERNERET. The CNOUS is the French National Student Service and the CROUS is its regional branch dealing with the student welfare organization. A room in a CROUS Student Hall is allocated first to French students who have low incomes. With our partner IPL (Institut Polytechnique de Lyon) we have an agreement with the Crous and our International students can benefit from a room there.

Since the demand is very high and because very few rooms are available there are 2 constraints:

you have to send to Sigolène Verneret your housing application as soon as possible and not later than May 31st.

you must agree to rent a room for a full period (For example: from July/August to the end of December and/or from the beginning of January to end of June/July).

Description of the room: A 10 m² room including bathroom, toilet and fridge. The kitchen is shared. No kitchenware. Bed linen is not provided. The price for 2014-2015 was € 260.50 / month. There are some possibilities to rent a studio for € 384 / month.

E - BANK ACCOUNT Once in Lyon, you can open a bank account. A French bank account is mandatory if you want to apply for housing allowance. How to open a bank account in France? • Take an appointment per phone or go directly to an agency. • Bring:

- Your passport.

- Your Visa.

- An Housing attestation.

- The ISARA attestation of enrollment.

- A Scholarship attestation if you have one.

Usually, opening a bank account for a relatively short period of time is free. However, prices depend on the agency. For example, Crédit Agricole offers a 1-to-3€ cost for the 1st year (then 23, 70€ per year) for students under 25 years old. The offer also supplies a MasterCard that you can use abroad with no additional cost. /!\ Do not forget to close your account when you leave France. If needed, bank agencies also provide fairly-priced home insurance for student.

F - HOUSING ALLOWANCE CAF (Caisse des Allocations Familiales) is a family benefits organization. As a student renting an apartment in France, you

are eligible for a housing allowance - called “Aide Personnalisée au Logement” (APL) - provided by this organization. The

amount depends on the location of the apartment, its surface area and the revenues of the student.

To apply online - www.caf.fr - you need:

- Your complete address in France.

- A proof of income (scholarships, wages, etc.).

- Your French bank details.

- Your email address.

When the online application is done, you need to set up a file. The following documents need to be joined to the file:

- A « demande d’aide au logement » form, completed by you.

- An housing attestation, completed by your landlord or CROUS.

- Your civil status documents (i.e ID, passport, birth certificate or family record book).

- Non-EU nationals: a student visa + a copy of your passport showing the “OFII” stamp.

EU nationals: a proof of student status + a copy of your European health insurance card + a formal statement of

sufficient resources.

/!\ Every documents from your country MUST be translated into French by a SWORN TRANSLATOR in France. (You can find the 2014 list of sworn translators online via the following link http://www.ca-

lyon.justice.fr/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=98&Itemid=459 )

Please note that there is a waiting period (“délai de carence”) of 1 month once you have your file completed and sent to

CAF. CAF will therefore NOT pay the allowance for 1st month spent in the apartment. For example, if you are arriving in

September and declaring your file to CAF only in October, you will receive the APL only from November on.

G - PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

The TCL network offers a wide range of services as it includes 2 funicular lines, 4 metro lines, 5 tramway lines and over

130 bus lines. You can easily go from one place to another in the city using different lines. However, do not forget to

validate your ticket each time you change lines (except from one metro line to another).

- Your ID photo + 5€ to create your TCL card.

- Your ISARA attestation of enrollment.

- An Housing attestation (ask for one at your student residence or ask for an Attestation de domicile).

• Each month, you can pay for your subscription in an agency or via one of the 410 vending machines at your disposal in

the metro and tramway stations.

H - CELLPHONE PLAN

There are several telephone operators in France, offering a wide range of cellphone plans. We suggest you ask for a plan

“sans engagement” (without obligation). Getting a cellphone deal through a mobile virtual network operator is usually

more affordable (for example: Virgin Mobile, Sosh, NRJ Mobile, etc.)

/!\ Please note: To get a cellphone plan in France you MUST open a bank account beforehand.

I - HEALTH AND INSURANCE Upon arrival and if you don’t have one already, you must subscribe to a civil liability insurance (Responsabité Civile) which protects you for many types of claims/ damage. (Around 16 -25 € with LMDE or SMERRA)

If you are a citizen of the European Union (EU) or a European Economic Area (EEA): Please bring your European Health Insurance Card. Please check the expiry date. It will exclude you from the mandatory subscription to the French Health Insurance System.

If you are NOT citizen of the European Union (EU) or a European Economic Area (EEA) and if you will stay in France for more than 3 months, you must subscribe to the French Students’ Health Insurance Scheme (€ 213 for one academic year – price valid for 2014-15). You will have the choice between two students’ health insurance scheme: LMDE or SMERRA. If needed, they can also provide fairly-priced home insurance for students Students over 28 years old are not eligible for the students’ health insurance scheme. They must subscribe to a private insurance. You can find it with LMDE => Couverture étudiant étranger Or with Crystal Studies: A private insurance adapted for foreign students over 28. If you want more information, please contact Sigolène VERNERET, she will put you though our partner. If in your home country, you do not have any complementary insurance to reimburse your expenses not reimbursed by the basic Health Insurance Scheme, you are strongly recommended to subscribe one in France. Sigolène Verneret will give you more information once you are at ISARA-Lyon. Please consider that these options can be less expensive and more adapted than insurance in your home country. (If you have bought a private insurance in your country, please check if the repatriation insurance is included). To help you, appendix 3 provides a list of English-speaking general practitioners and specialists available in Lyon, the French emergency numbers, a list of the main hospitals and the address of a few pharmacies.

J - STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS There are different student associations at ISARA: BDE: the Student Union with its team of more than 30 members, will give you useful information regarding the numerous student activities offered at ISARA-Lyon (sport, music, event…). The BDE is open every day from 1:00 to 2:00pm and also usually during the 10:00am morning break. ISARAMAP: an association supporting small farming and that creates a direct link between producers and consumers. ASSOCIATION JEUNES AMBASSADEURS:

If you are a foreign student and have decided to pursue your studies in Lyon, make the most of your

stay by becoming familiar with the rich cultural environment of your host city and meeting major

institutional and business leaders thanks to the Jeunes Ambassadeurs program.

The Jeunes Ambassadeurs program is based on the principle of reciprocity.

The program for a Jeune Ambassadeur lasts 6 months (from October to April) during which time the students will form a

pair with their “business coach” and attend different events. Also, each student will put together a project linking –

economically, culturally, scientifically… – France and their home country. This project will be submitted to the association,

and the successful ones, awarded. If you want more information on the projects developed by the former Jeunes

Ambassadeurs, please click here.

Benefiting from this program, upon return to their home country, the Jeunes Ambassadeurs will be able to communicate

on the expertise of the companies and the relations established with their directors, encourage contacts between

members of the Jeune Ambassadeur network, and facilitate international partnerships by communicating information,

IV – ACADEMIC PROGRAMME ISARA-Lyon offers international students an opportunity to choose courses within five training programs in accordance with their specialization:

Agriculture, environment and resource management Agri-food, food and industrial management Sustainable rural development Markets and corporate management Viticulture, Territories and Agroecology How to choose courses? In order to correctly choose the courses you want to attend, please respect the following policies:

All your courses should belong to the same specialization.

Two courses cannot take place at the same time (except for the French lessons).

Be careful, some courses have limited places (these are marked with a * in the documents).

Your level of French (and English for courses in this language) must be “B1” (According to the "Common European Framework of Reference: Learning, Teaching, Assessment")

Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

For the 4th and 5th year specialization modules, field trip fee can be required to contribute to transport and accommodation costs (a maximum of € 250)

You will have the possibility to take costless French classes every Thursday afternoon. Generally at the end of each semester you will be given the opportunity to take the TFI test to evaluate your level of French.

Courses take place from Monday to Friday, about 30 to 36 hours a week. There are generally a maximum of 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon. (8am till 6pm). Courses can be lectures or practical seminars (small groups). Field works and personal research projects are also currently used in the class. **Once registered in a course, you must attend all classes** /!\

Specific information for double degree students: To obtain the ISARA-Lyon engineer diploma, double degree students will be required to get at least 785 points in the TFI test (Equivalent to the B2 Level).
