There are application Deadlines?

YES, to ensure that applications are processed in a timely manner that allows the accepted applicant to begin their graduate studies in an efficient and timely manner.

Starting Semester Wanting Assistantship Admission Only Fall March1st August 1st Spring October1st December1st Summer March 1st May1st

“The difference between the two deadlines each semester is whether you want to be considered for an assistantship position in the department. While this deadline does not guarantee an assistantship position, it will ensure that all applicants desiring a position will be known to the department and will be able to receive full consideration.”

What happen if you miss the deadlines?

Those who miss the published deadlines may still be admitted by the Graduate School as a temporary graduate student (GTMP status).

While this will allow the applicant to take up to 9 credit hours, the applicant will not be considered part of a degree program until the application has been fully completed and successfully reviewed by the faculty for admission.

Department Decision

When you have completed both parts of the application process, the Department’s faculty will review all of the submitted materials to determine your admission to the graduate program – from your personal interest, resume and letters of reference to your GPA and GRE scores before a decision is made on your admission.

Our goal in the decision making process is to make sure that our program can provide you with the type of experiences that will meet your personal and career goals.

Minimum Scores?

We do not have minimum scores or experiences required for admission, we reserve the right to limit admissions due to the number of spaces available and/or available departmental resources.

Research Assistantship?

Graduate assistantship positions are part-time positions within the Department that serve to support the functions and activities of the Department and provide an income while you complete your graduate degree. These 20 hour/week positions will provide a monthly salary and partial relief of tuition and fees (including a waiver of out-of-state tuition). In addition to a salary, graduate assistants are provided an office space and desktop computer to complete their assistantship duties as well as their coursework.

The Department has three types of assistantship positions. The yearly availability of these positions is dependent upon funding with the number of positions varying from year-to-year. In addition, the amount and difficulty of the tasks increase for doctoral-level assistantships.

Research Assistantship

Teaching Assistantship Administrative Assistantship

A graduate student would be employed in support of the research faculty and funded projects that may include activities in a laboratory, in a field, computer work, or such other activities as may assist research effort.

A graduate student would be employed in support of the teaching mission of the department which include a variety of classroom and laboratory activities.

A graduate student would assist with internal departmental activities and/or work related to outside-the-department service functions (such as teacher workshops) which utilizes knowledge and skills beyond undergraduate academic studies

Table 1. Types of Assistantship Positions

Who Gets a Position?

Assistantship positions are jobs; they are not scholarships and are not given on the basis of financial need. As such, we try to hire the person who will be best able to complete the tasks of the available assistantship position.

To ensure that you receive full consideration for every assistantship position, it will be helpful for the faculty to know you – your knowledge, skills, experiences, and even your potential for growth. As such, we ask that students who wish to be considered for an assistantship position also submit a portfolio as part of their application.

If you were not an undergraduate student in the Department, you are strongly encouraged to visit the department as part of your application process. This will provide you the opportunity to not only meet the faculty and confirm your decision to apply but will allow the faculty the opportunity to get to know you beyond your application materials.

The decision to offer an assistantship position to an admitted graduate student is made by the faculty member who possesses the position (e.g. as a result of a research grant). The actual offer of an assistantship position cannot be made prior to the student’s admission to the graduate program as per Graduate School procedures. As such, beginning your application as soon as possible is important when desiring an assistantship position.

For additional information, contact Dr. David Doerfert, Graduate Studies Coordinator, Department of Agricultural Education & Communications, Texas Tech University, Box 42131, Lubbock, TX 79409-2131, (806) 742-2816.

Does Lubbock have an agricultural area?

Yes! Free range ranching of cattle and sheep in the late nineteenth century was the first large scale agricultural production in West Texas above and below the Caprock. Large acreage ranches were typical of the era including such famous ranches as the IOA, Spade, Spur, 6666, and Matador.

The Southern High Plains is one of the United States' most productive agricultural areas. Twenty percent of the nation's cotton crop is planted by South Plains farmers. Grain sorghum, wheat, and forage crops are also important. Cattle production has increased with the expansion of feedlots on the South Plains.

Agricultural production on the South Plains has been enhanced by the large size of farms, mechanization, irrigation technology, and agricultural research.

The average number of acres per South Plains farm is roughly three times the national average. Large cotton and grain crop farms are more efficient than small farms, providing higher yields per acre and making higher capital investments feasible.

”To preserve the history of, tell the story of, and instill pride in American agriculture and values”

A little of History…

In 1969, as agricultural museum was deemed important to the people of West Texas. Too many people thought of the old machinery left in the back yard as junk.

To Alton Brazell, a Lubbock County Commissioner for 36 years, this junk was a hidden treasure. Alton took it upon himself to begin a collection of agricultural equipment and machinery that told the story of American agriculture. This collection became the property of the Lubbock County Commissioner’s Court, known as the Lubbock County Historical Collection. Part of the collection was housed on five acres in Shallowater, known as the Shallowater Park. Another part of the collection was stored in a warehouse in downtown Lubbock.

In 2002, the Lubbock County Historical Collection permanently loaned the exhibits to the American Museum of Agriculture. The museum strives to preserve the history and tell the story of American agriculture, is located at 1501 Canyon Lake Drive, opened its doors to the public in May 2002.
