SURPLUS eLECTRICITY
WASTE HEATWaste heat from the industrial manufacturing is brought to the Energy centre for distribution for heating purpose.
WASTE HEAT
ENERGY CENTREUses a biomass Combined heat and Power (CHP) boiler to supply district heating to the settlement and at the same time pro-ducing electricity.
GROUND SOURCE HEATDeep bore wells are drilled to use the earth as a heat sink, reducing heating and cooling demand.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTAll parts of the site are within 200m of bus stops.
PEDESTRIAN PREFERENCEPlanning preference has been given to walking and the Greenway is a vehicle free zone in the centre of the development.
ACTIVE + PASSIVE BUILDING DESIGNAll buildings are oriented to the south to maximise solar potential. The roof has been angled at 38deg. the most appropriate angle to benefit from year round solar orientation. The solar panels are used to gen-erate heat water and the rest of the area dedicated as PV electricity generation.
ELECTRIC CAR RENTAL + ELECTRICITY STORAGEA electric car rental place is there which also acts as a storage for surplus electricity generated by the PV panels reducing reliance on the grid.
BIOMASS CHP BOILERThe energy centre is fed with bio-mass generated from the farm and forests of the village.
GREENWAYThe run off water is channelled into the swale in the middle of the site and further fed into a retention pond recharging ground water and reducing storm water run off.

PROJECTS WORKED ON
> ResidentialApartmentbuildingatMehli,Shimla>> Temple Pavilion at Shathala>>> Residence for Sanjay Garg, Chandigarh>>> Residence for Hardayal and Kanwar Singh, Shimla>>>> Extension of parents residence, Shimla
> Residential Apartment building at Mehli, Shimla - 3 Apartments proposed in a block development parcel - very steep site
Learning Intent Testproposalforaninsulatedthermallyefficientbuilding.
> Current Status of Project: sent for planning permission.
LearningOutcome:>Difficulttoconvincedevelopersforenergyefficientorclimaticdesigns as very few actual examples are built there in the region which can be replicated.
> Residence for Mr. Sanjay Garg -Completerebuildingofanexistingresidence
Learning Intent -DesignDevelopment -Constructiondocumentpreparation
>> Residence for Hardayal and Kanwar Singh-RenovationandExtensionofanexistingresidentialbuildingto create 3 separate apartments.
Learning Intents:Toexplorethepossibilityofreusinganexistingbuildingandtoextend the life without demolishing it completely.
> Current Status of Project: In principle approval of design concept.
> Learning Outcome:Greatsatisfactionofthedesignoutcome,reusingtheexistingstructuregavetheclientsanewsatisfactionofbeingconnectedtotheheritageandatthesametimewasabigcostsaving for them.
>> Extension of Residence for Parents-RenovationandExtensionofanexistingresidentialandfarmbuilding.
> Learning Intents:- To implementing sustainable passive solar design solutions forclimaticallysuitableenvironment.-Tryandutiliselocalconstructiontechniques.
UPPERGROUNDFLOORLVL
GROUNDFLOORLVL
> Current Status of Project: Constructioninprogress
> Learning Outcome:- Got the opportunity to implement the actual learnings of the
Sustainable design courses. - The passive solar design strategies are experimental and
unproven there but its a chance to put the learnings in practice.
-Availabilityoftechnologicalexpertise,materialsandcostbenefitanalysisareneededtoarriveatthebestsolutiontobeimplemented.
-Innovationandpatienceisthekey.
>> Temple Pavilion-Pavilionforavillagedeity’spalanquin.
> Learning Intents:-Tobeacquaintedwiththerichculturaltraditionofbuildingconsturction.-Applyinglocaltraditionalresourcesforasustainableproject.
> Learning Outcomes:-Extremelydifficulttoconvincepeopleoftherelevanceoftraditionalexpertisewhichislookeddownuponas‘oldfashioned’- There is no organised method to undertake projects in a communitysetting, toomanydecisionmakerstoinfluencetheoutcome.
LEARNING OUTCOME
AIM> Implement what was learnt from the exposure in the alps.
> Try and adhere to the standard of professional excellence in designing with minute details.
> Try to get a high degree of workmanship.
>Implementdesignforclimaticallysuitablesustainablebuildings
ACTUAL>AdaptingtechnologytosuittheconditionsinIndiaisachallengeconsideringtheresourcesandexpertisepaucity.
> What is taught in the school may not be directly relavent for the place I intend to work in now, but exposure to it is certain to change the way of thinking.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT
>Moreexpertisefromthearchitectstoimplementtheideaswouldhavehelped.BasicallyIwasexperimentingandamstillnotentirelysureofhow the ideas will actually work.
>Technicalexpertisetoimplementallwhatisavailableanddoneinthedeveloped world.
>Gotachancetoworkontheconcentrationofsustainabledesignstudiobut unfortunatley the project for the urban design got scrapped and I could not get a chance to try any ideas there.
GOOD THINGS
>Gavemeachancetoputtopracticewhatwaslearnt.
> Time to introspect about the learning progress and the relevance in therealworldsituation.
> Understanding the real meaning of Sustainability.
