ABOUT THE STUDY PROGRAMMEGeotechnics and Geohazards is a two-year master's programme in Englishat NTNU, aiming to give the partici-pants scientic skills and insight intophenomena like slides and avalanches:Why do they happen? Where is ithazardous to build, where is it sae,and when? How can the stability o aslope be evaluated, independent o itslocation in Norway or in Las Colinas,El Salvador? In act, internationallythe challenges with respect to slideprevention and the consequences ogeo-related natural disasters are evenlarger than in Norway.

The problem denitions and the needor proper evaluation require compe-tence in many scientic elds: geology, hydrogeology, geotechnics, mechanics,

    numerical modelling, risk analyses andearthquakes.

Geotechnics represents the scienceneeded to build saely on, in or o soils. The challenges are numerous, and

oten related to optimal utilization olimited space in urban environment, i.e.deep excavations and creative use othe underground in cities to obtain morespace on the surace. Foundation olarge bridges and multi-storey buildingson sot subsoil is another challenge.

STUDY ENvIRONMENTThe master's programme in Geo-technics and Geohazards commencedin the all semester 2005, but isounded on long educational andscientic traditions at our university.Geotechnics is a well respected scienceboth nationally and internationally, not least due to more than 50 years o

high-quality research, development andconsultancy oered by the NorwegianGeotechnical Institute (NGI) in Oslo. Thestudy programme is hence oered inclose cooperation with other partners inthe International Centre or Geohazards(ICG). The University o Oslo, NTNU,NGI, NGU and NORSAR are partnersin this centre or outstanding scienticresearch, and researchers and proes-sors in these institutions oer speciallyadapted education, including projectsand master theses with guidance.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSAdmission to this master's programmerequires three or our year BSc/BEngdegree in civil engineering or similar.Basic knowledge in the ollowing topicsis needed: Structural mechanics, geo-technics and engineering geology. Theapplicants should master the Englishlanguage written as well as spoken.

    JOB PROSPECT

In geotechnics, there has or several ye-ars been a lack o educated candidates, and there is now a great demand, bothamong private and public employers.Norwegian consultant companies andother actors are engaged interna-

tionally, not least in th e developingcountries on several continents, andrepresents interesting possibilitiesor employment. Find more rom ourprogramme here:www.geohazards.no

    Few people remember the

    slide that destroyed 100

meters o the railway line at

    Jevika, south o Steinkjer,

March 10. 1997. This is due to

    the act that the northbound

    train was stopped right in

time, beore it drove into the

    slide pit. A catastrophe was

    hence avoided! But why did

    the slide happen? Why are

    there numerous slides in

    Norway and elsewhere in the

    world? How can todays

engineers reduce the risk onatural disasters?
