• What is the eRDP? • The eRDP is an electronic dive table.

• It’s an easy to use version of the world’s most popular dive table, the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP).

• Since the RDP was introduced in 1988, both the table and The Wheel versions, have been used by millions of recreational divers.

• The eRDP is designed to give you the same maximum dive times, surface interval information and pressure groups as the RDP– table version.

What is the eRDP? What is the eRDP? Allows planning of single and repetitive dives Not a computer, but a specialized calculatorNot submersible, but resists a little moisture

Allows planning of single and repetitive dives Not a computer, but a specialized calculatorNot submersible, but resists a little moisture

• What is the eRDP? • The eRDP also allows you to enter dive times, dive depths and surface intervals

so you can plan single and repetitive dives, just as you would with the RDP table. • We’ll review the eRDP’s three modes - Dive Planning, Minimum Surface

Interval and Maximum Depth - later in this presentation.• The eRDP is not a computer, but a specialized calculator that makes that makes

planning and tracking dives simpler. • Just as using a calculator to balance your checkbook is easier than adding

and subtracting by hand, calculating dive profiles using the eRDP is quicker than figuring out profiles using the RDP table.

• Although it resists moisture, the eRDP is not submersible. • Just like a standard calculator, the eRDP is not waterproof. It’s designed for

use on the surface and can’t be taken underwater.• Keep in mind that you can take your RDP table in the water. It’s a good

backup to have your RDP table handy in your BCD pocket if you need to reference it, and to have your eRDP waiting on the surface to calculate your dives during a surface interval or when logging dives in your log book.

• What is the eRDP?• eRDP components:

• Attached general Rules for Use Slate. • The RDP table and The Wheel have the general rules for use printed

on them. Those same rules and guidelines apply to the eRDP.The rules are printed on a separate slate that is attached by a simple ring.

• You’ll see how the eRDP actually prompts the user to refer to specific rules when certain dive planning circumstances occur.

• It’s important to keep the eRDP and the slate together. • Instructions For Use Booklet that includes both metric and imperial

information and examples.

Battery compartment

• What is the eRDP?• eRDP components:

• Common user-replaceable battery located in the back of the calculator.• The eRDP uses a common 3.0 volt #2032 calculator battery that’s

user-replaceable. The battery has an estimated life of one year with an average use of 10 minutes per day. When the display dims, the battery should be replaced.

• Before using a new eRDP, you must remove the plastic protecting the battery.

• Metric/Imperial switch is in the rim of the battery compartment.• The default for the eRDP is metric. To change it to imperial, you must

open the battery compartment and flip the switch to imperial.• Once set, you probably won’t need to switch from one measuring

system to the other. If you do, it’s easily accomplished using a switch inside the battery compartment.

• What can the eRDP do?• Auto shut off

• If you leave the eRDP on for more than five minutes without entering information, it will shut itself off to conserve the battery.

• There are three modes that correspond to the eRDP functions. We’ll look at each of these in detail next:

• Dive Planning• Minimum Surface Interval• Maximum Depth Planning

continued. . .continued. . .

• What can the eRDP do?• Use the Dive Planning mode to not only plan, but also calculate your pressure

group after a dive or after a surface interval• After entering the Dive Planning mode, the eRDP will ask if this is your first dive

of the day. Answer Yes and you can find your NDL and PG after the dive.• Enter a depth and you’ll get your NDL• Go on to enter a time and you’ll get your pressure group for that depth and

time. • You may also enter the planning process at other points:

• Before a surface interval, you enter your PG after a previous dive • After a surface interval, you enter your PG after your surface interval• This features means that you can continue dive planning at any point, as

long as you know your pressure group. You don’t have to always start from the beginning by re-entering data from previous dives.

New PG displayed anytime you enter an actual bottom time (ABT)or surface interval (SI)

Dive Planning modeNew PG displayed anytime you enter an actual bottom time (ABT)or surface interval (SI)

• Dive Planning mode• One of the great advantages of the eRDP is that it eliminates the need for you to

perform the calculation of adding Residual Nitrogen Time (RNT) to Actual Bottom Time (ABT) to get Total Bottom Time (TBT) in order to find your PG after a repetitive dive.

• This eliminates the most common source of error when using the RDP table.

• After you enter your depth and time for a repetitive dive, the eRDP displays your PG after the dive.

• This is also true when starting with a PG, then entering a surface interval – you get your new PG.

Minimum Surface Interval modeEnter depths and times for two dives and get required minimum surface intervalEnter the PG after previous dive, then enter depth and time for next dive and get required minimum surface interval

• Minimum Surface Interval mode• The eRDP allows you to plan two dives and find the required minimum surface

interval.• You enter the depths and times for both dives and the eRDP displays the

required minimum surface interval.• You can also find minimum surface interval after any dive when planning your

next dive.• First enter the PG after a previous dive. • Next enter the depth and time for the next dive and the eRDP displays the

required minimum surface interval.

Maximum Depth modePlan first dive – enter desired dive time, get maximum allowed depthAfter planning a dive, enter desired time for next dive – get the maximum depth for that timeEnter PG after surface interval, then desired time – get maximum depth for that time

• What else can the eRDP do?• Maximum Depth mode• The eRDP allows you to plan your first dive by entering a desired dive time. It will

give you the maximum allowed depth based on that time.• After planning a dive, you can enter a desired time for the next dive and find the

maximum depth you can dive to for that time.• If you know your PG after a surface interval, you can enter a desired dive time

and the eRDP displays the maximum depth you can dive to for that time.

Warning appears – Exceeds LimitsAlarm (three short beeps) soundsPlanning stops until limit is adjusted

Prompts to refer to printed rules

• What can the eRDP do?• The eRDP has built in safety warnings, prompts and alarms• During use, the eRDP warns you when a value exceeds a limit.

• Warnings and prompts are accompanied by an alarm (three short beeps). • For example, when you enter a time that exceeds the NDL, the eRDP displays

“Exceeds Limits” and emits an alarm.

• The eRDP will not allow you to enter a time that exceeds the NDL. After displaying the “Exceeds Limits” warning, it shows the NDL once more and prompts you to enter your dive time again.

• When an RDP/eRDP rule applies, you are prompted to refer to rules printed on the accompanying Rules For Use Slate.

• When using the RDP table, you have to remember when to apply the rules. The eRDP conveniently prompts you to refer to the rules when they apply.

• For example, when you enter a depth greater than 40 metres/130 feet, the eRDP displays “Exceeds Limits – See Rule 10” and emits an audio alarm. The eRDP will not allow you to plan dives that exceed these depths.

• The eRDP reminds you that a safety stop for 3 minutes is required any time the pressure group of the profile you’ve entered comes within 3 pressure groups of a no-decompression limit, and for any dive to a depth of 30 metres/100 feet or greater.

• When your PG after a dive is W,X,Y or Z, the eRDP displays “WXYZ Rule –See Rule 6” and emits an audible alarm.

dive profiles or use an actual eRDP. Have divers follow along on their personal eRDPs.]

• Demonstrate:• Finding NDL.• Exceeding NDL. Enter a dive depth to display NDL. Then enter a dive time

that exceeds the NDL to display the “Exceeds Limits” warning.• Finding PG after a dive.• Exceeding recreational depth. Enter a dive depth that exceeds 40

metres/130 feet to display the “Exceeds Limits” warning.• Plan a 2-dive profile starting with the first dive. • Plan a 2-dive profile by entering the PG after the first dive.• Safety Stop prompt. Enter a dive depth of 30 meters/100 feet to display the

“Safety Stop 3 min” warning.• Calculate the maximum depth for a first dive. • Calculate the maximum depth for a repetitive dive, entering the PG before

the dive.

continued. . .continued. . .

• How do you integrate the eRDP into PADI programs?• Starting with the Open Water Diver course, you have several options. You may

use the eRDP in any PADI program in place of the RDP table, however, it’s a good idea to have student divers learn to use both the table (or Wheel) and eRDP.

• You can teach the table first to ensure that student divers understand the purpose and basic function of a dive table, then introduce the eRDP as an easy-to-use alternative.

• This makes the eRDP a great add on sale for any course.• You may also choose to teach the RDP table and eRDP side-by-side.• Or, you can teach the eRDP first and introduce the table as an excellent

backup.• This reinforces the need to have a backup for dive planning which

allows you to also position the eRDP as alternative backup when diving with a dive computer.

Divemaster Course:Candidates need to be familiar with the RDP table, The Wheel and eRDPCandidates may use eRDP during Divemaster Exam – Decompression Theory and the RecreationalDive Planner

• How do you integrate the eRDP into the PADI Divemaster course?• At this leadership level of training, divemaster candidates need to be familiar

with, and proficient at using, all versions of the RDP - table, The Wheel andeRDP.

• You should introduce the eRDP to divemaster candidates who are unfamiliar with it, the same way that you currently introduce The Wheel or RDP table to candidates who are unfamiliar with either version.

• Divemaster candidates may use the eRDP when answering RDP table questions on the Divemaster Exam – Decompression Theory and the Recreational Dive Planner.

Instructor Development Course and Instructor Examination:Candidates need to know how to use and teach the RDP table, The Wheel and eRDPCandidates may use eRDP during use the IE Recreational Dive Plannertheory exam

• How is the eRDP integrated into PADI Instructor-level training?• Similar to the approach for divemaster training, PADI Instructor candidates need

to know how to use all three version of the RDP. In addition, they need to know how to teach all three versions.

• During an IDC, a PADI Course Director should integrate eRDP use into the presentation “How to Teach the Recreational Dive Planner” and help candidates become comfortable teaching the eRDP by assigning Knowledge Development presentations.

• Instructor candidates may use the eRDP during the IE Recreational Dive Planner theory exam.

Do not use eRDP during PADI Enriched Air Diver course

Divers must calculate residual nitrogen time (RNT)– only possible with RDP table

• It is not possible to integrate eRDP use into the PADI Enriched Air Diver course because divers are required to calculate residual nitrogen time (RNT).

• This is not possible using the eRDP or The Wheel. • Enriched Air Diver course students should continue to learn how to use the

air RDP table in conjunction with the DSAT Equivalent Air Depth Table.

• How do you integrate the eRDP into PADI programs?• Use the simulator on your personal computer (Windows PC or Macintosh) to

show divers how to use the eRDP. • You can project the simulator the same way that you show lesson guides.

• This allows divers to see details similar to the way a Giant RDP table or Giant Wheel functions.

• The simulator is also a great tool for reviewing dive table quiz and exam questions.

• You’ll see how easy it is to use the simulator during our demonstration of the eRDP.
