MASTER OF MEDICINE
(PSYCHIATRY)
Introduction
Master in Medicine (Psychiatry) is a 4-year
clinical postgraduate training which aims to
produce mental health professionals who are
knowledgeable and highly skilled in areas of
mental health.
It is a full time course with a maximum of
7-years candidature using English as the main
medium of instruction but
Bahasa Melayu is some-
times used (where relvant).

Outcome At the end of the programme, candidates should be able to:
1) Empower and apply psychiatry and related medical knowledge in the diagnosis and management of individual with psychological disorders through complete and comprehensive assessment competently.
2) Demonstrate good attitude, effective communication skills and sense of
responsibility not only with professional colleagues and other members in mental and health care team but also with patients, family and other community members.
3) Function as an efficient consultant with strong leadership quality imbued
with humanistic values and ethical principles in raising the levels of practice and mental health standard in the society.
4) Carry out research activities and continue lifelong learning in psychiatry and its related medical field

Learning
Outcome The programme would be able to equip the candidates with the necessary
knowledge, skills and attitude in psychiatry upon completion of the course.
Phase 1 deal with aspects of basic sciences and general psychiatry. It is a one
year structured teaching programme meant to impart to the candidates the im-
portance of basic medical sciences in psychiatry.
Phase II which comprises of year 2 and year 3 emphasise on the exposure of the
candidates to the various specialties in psychiatry. This is done using the rotational
system in the relevant institutions.
Phase III is the final stage of the course, where Candidates in the year 4 will as-
sume more responsibility and will be supervised with respect to their clinical com-
petency, administrative and research skills.

Entry
Requirements 1) Entry qualifications
• The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bache-lor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and • At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate. (Priority to candidate’s who has completed six (6) months in Psychiatry as a Medical Officer after the internship training in any government hospitals). .
2) Other requirements
• Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and • Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
