IntroductionThe German psychiatrist Georg A. Roemer (1892-1972) became acquainted with Hermann Rorschach during his, Roemer's, stay as volunteer in the Herisau asylum in 1919. Enthusiastic about Rorschach’s inkblot method he began experimenting himself, however modifying Rorschach’s test beyond all recognition.

Content: The fonds is made up of, among other things, the extended correspondence between G. A. Roemer and H. Rorschach from 1919 until 1922. Roemer, having experimented for decades seeking new techniques for the preparation of test pictures, left an immense number of sheets, which are interesting for their aesthetic and artistic value. Complemented by some of the other papers and non-published literature of the time, the letters received and sent by Roemer are an important source of knowledge on the history of psychotherapy during the Nazi rule in Germany.

Biogr.: Georg August Hermann Roemer (1892 - 1972), descended from an old Swabian family, was a fellow student of Ernst Kretschmer in Tübingen from where he graduated in medicine in 1916. Thereafter he gained practical experience at the university hospital in Göttingen and elsewhere, before going in late 1918 to Switzerland, where he worked for three months as a trainee at the general hospital in Herisau and there met Hermann Rorschach at a conference of the Herisau physicians. In 1919 from the beginning of March to the end of May Roemer worked as an intern at the asylum in Herisau where he became acquainted with Rorschach's test, about which he was so enthusiastic that he created his own inkblots, eight of which were found among Rorschach's papers. These were the eight inkblots which Roemer later improved to form his "Stammserie" or basic series. Following his time in Herisau Roemer was employed as physician by a children's relief organisation in the Bernese Alps, where he tested children using some new inkblots as well as those from Herisau. In September 1920 Roemer returned to Germany and worked as a scientific assistant at the university hospital in Göttingen where he continued his tests now on adults and particularly in the field of war neurosis. An intensive correspondence was established between himself and Rorschach, which continued till the death of the latter in April 1922.

In May 1921 Roemer entered service at the headquarters of the Deutsche Studentenschaft in Göttingen where he had the task of determining the adaptability of Rorschach’s test for the purposes of academic vocational guidance. In this function he had the opportunity of testing students and lecturers, the results of which he sent to Rorschach for interpretation. After Rorschach's death Roemer felt himself called to modify the Rorschach method: "First only the general direction was defined: the Rorschach test had to be liberated from its formal stiffness and to be reconstructed as a test of symbolic content…The first step in the new direction was already made with the reshaping of the test series." (Roemer 1939, p. 26).

The so-called “Tiefentest” (deep test) was the first modification, which led in turn to the “Symboltest” (symbol test). These developments resulted in quite radical changes to the basic Rorschach method. The “Symboltest” was later extended firstly with additional pictures and later, with continuous recording of the subject’s breathing, integrated into the so-called “Zentraltest” (central test) (Roemer 1931, p. 41). Over many years Roemer experimented with different techniques for the


creation of his blots before finally deciding on the cutting and pasting of parts from different blots to form numerous new combinations. Roemer left the Deutsche Studentenschaft in October 1922 because of the financial limitations of that organisation, and in 1923 joined the Medizinische Poliklinik in Königsberg. The following year he was appointed director of the Institut für Persönlichkeitsforschung in Stuttgart, which had been founded by the industrialist Robert Bosch. The institute concerned itself with the psychodiagnostic testing of scholars and with selection tests for industry. The Gesellschaft für Persönlichkeitsforschung was established there in 1926.

Under the Nazi regime Roemer maintained close contact with the Deutsches Institut für psychologische Forschung und Psychotherapie in Berlin, loyal to the Nazi Government. He did become a member of the Nazi Party, but left after only one year. While in Stuttgart he worked with reputed psychotherapists such as Schottlaender, Graber, Meng, Speer and others. The institute there was closed in 1941 and the "Gesellschaft für Persönlichkeitsforschung" suspended. After the war Roemer travelled in France and Switzerland delivering lectures and seeking a publisher for his test method and for original documents (letters, test results, etc.) in his possession. He settled in 1953 in Tutzing where, besides a private practice, he established the Psychomedizinisches Institut. He never ceased working for the breakthrough for his test method, and to this end he contacted authorities such as Webb, Beck, Piotrowski and others in the USA, but his efforts were not to be crowned with success and he never found a publisher for his test. The test series he published finally in 1966 at his own cost consisted of eight blots similar to those of Herisau rounded off with parts cut from blots made using other techniques.

Returning to Germany in 1920 Roemer systematically tested people with his "Stammserie" (later he named it "Symboltest") which he had created in Herisau with H. Rorschach. Between 1921 and 1922 he forwarded to Rorschach many protocols for interpretation. Rorschach scored the protocols in the same manner as for his own test series. In their correspondence Rorschach and Roemer discussed in detail the results of this exchange (see H. Rorschach: Briefwechsel, 2004). Among the testprotocols there is one of a politician Rorschach refered to in "The application of the Form Interpretation Test" (Psychodiagnostics 1942, p. 206-207).

In october 1921 Roemer stayed in Herisau with Rorschach. At this time he tested Rorschach with his "Stammserie". The protocol with Rorschach's answers is also included in the file. Roemer published the protocol in 1965.

Note.: To Rorschach's discontent Roemer solely used his "Stammserie" and it was only at Rorschach's repeated requests that Roemer made the test with Rorschach's plates too.

With regard to publication Roemer used to paste either original documents or copies of original documents into books. There are three books with Rorschach protocols numbered 7-11/2, 7-16/2, 7-17). The three books contain Rorschach protocols recorded by Roemer, some of them including interpretations by Rorschach. There are also five Rorschach protocols recorded by an acquaintance of Rorschach (Paul Walser) including interpretations by Rorschach. In a letter from december 12, 1921 Roemer asked Rorschach for these protocols accounting for diagnostic training. Shortly after Rorschach's death, in a letter to Emil Oberholzer from april 19, 1922, Roemer gave notice of sending him these protocols in the next days. Why this didn't happen is unclear.

Note.: The "Deutsche Studentenschaft" (German Student Association), founded in 1919 as an umbrella organisation of local student associations, supported initially primarily the social needs of students suffering from the consequences of Word War I and the following inflation. In 1921 G.A. Roemer entered service in the "Wirtschaftsnebenamt", where he was assigned the task of establishing an "Erwerbs- and Berufsberatungsamt" for the "Deutsche Studentenschaft", at that time presided by Franz Holzwarth. Note.: In 1924 psychoanalysts from Stuttgart established the "Ärztlich-psychologisches Institut" sponsored by the "Hilfsverband für höhere Schulen" in Württemberg and led by G.A. Roemer. Later the sponsoring was taken over by the "Gesellschaft für Persönlichkeitsforschung" founded in 1926. In the following years the name of the institute changed several times. From 1926 on it was called "Ärztlich-psychologisches Institut der Gesellschaft für Persönlichkeitsforschung" or "Psychologisches Institut für Persönlichkeitsforschung" and at the latest from 1937 onward its name was "Psychomedizinisches Institut". Between 1938 and 1941 the institute was integrated in the "Deutsches Institut für psychologische Forschung und Psychotherapie", (also known as Göring Institute) under the direction of Matthias Heinrich Göring, a cousin of Hermann Göring, the propaganda minister in the Nazi government. The "Psychomedizinisches Institut", still led by Roemer, became the Württemberg branch of the Göring Institute. As a result of the war the institute moved in 1941 to the Monastery Beuron, about 100 km south of Stuttgart. In the aftermath of the war Roemer worked also for the French occupation forces, but thereafter he had to close the institute for many years before reopening it in 1954 in Tutzing near Munich.

Content: Papers including training programmes, circulars, minutes, reports and letters concerning the "Deutsches Institut für psychologische Forschung und Psychotherapie".

Note.: As a result of the Nazi seizure of power, the "Allgemeine Ärztliche Gesellschaft für Psychotherapie" established in 1928 was, along with the "Deutsche Allgemeine Ärztliche Gesellschaft für Psychotherapie", reorganised in 1934 as "Internationale Ärztliche Gesellschaft für Psychotherapie" under the presidency of Carl Gustav Jung. The physician and jurist Matthias Heinrich Göring, cousin of senior Nazi Hermann Göring, became chairman of the "Deutsche Allgemeine Ärztliche Gesellschaft für Psychotherapie". In 1936 the "Deutsches Institut für psychologische Forschung und Psychotherapie" was established in Berlin in the premises of the "Berliner Psychoanalytisches Institut" where, after the emigration of Max Eitingon and other Jewish psychoanalysts, and the expulsion of the remaining Jewish members from the Deutsche Psychoanalytische Gesellschaft, only a few of it's former personnel were left. The "Deutsches Institut für psychologische Forschung und Psychotherapie", later "Reichsinstitut für psychologische Forschung und Psychotherapie" and generally named the "Göring Institute" after its director Matthias Göring was, thanks to this peculiar setup, able to maintain an astonishing degree of independence in the first few years of Nazi rule, in terms of both training and research. Because of its closeness to the Nazi government the Allies wound up the institute at the end of the war. G.A. Roemer was a member of the "Allgemeine Ärztliche Gesellschaft für Psychotherapie" and leader of the Württemberg branch of the "Deutsches Institut für psychologische Forschung und Psychotherapie", formerly "Psychomedizinisches Institut".

Note.: G.A. Roemer left a the large quantity of test pictures. From 1919 to 1965 he experimented with various techniques ranging from folded-paper (as practised by Rorschach) to decalcomania (spreading gouache on a sheet of paper and pressing another sheet of paper on it) and collage (in composing pictures using cut-outs from blots and sticking them onto another sheet). He also experimented with various paints, e.g. ink, oils, watercolours and gouache. There are symmetric and asymmetric configurations but all of them originated from folded-paper technique or decalcomania.

Note.: The signed pictures are either framed by stiff paper or stuck into an folder.

Note.: Roemer, who was a good photographer, left a great number of photographs. It is, however, difficult to determine if all those photos were made by him.

Note.: Obviously Roemer utilised many of his photos for test purposes but we do not know if he created the photos specifically for these. Besides the “Symboltest” he produced several other tests which he would use before and after administering the “Symboltest”. See his publication “Die psychomedizinische Testmethode” (1949). Many of the photographs can be assigned to Roemer's "Objekt-Test".

Content: 51 photographs framed by or mounted on stiff paper used as test pictures. Included are also some single copies in various sizes, some of them being identical with those framed or mounted on stiff paper. There is also Roemer's publication "Die psychomedizinische Testmethode" (1949) and a sheet with black-and-white illustrations of various test pictures.

Note.: The “Objekt-Test” consists of photographs of objects of daily life in unusual illumination or magnification.

Content: Except of three, the photos in various sizes (the largest being 18 x 24 cm) are stamped on the reverse side "Copyright by Weltrundschau". Some of them are provided with a short text, e.g. "Krieg der Zukunft. Führer mit Hund in Ausrüstung für den Gaskrieg. Aufnahme aus der Heeres-Hunde-Anstalt der Reichswehr", or "Das Hotel für Säuglinge. Kinderaufbewahrung.".

Note.: Weltrundschau was an agency for photo reportage in Berlin which provided stories with pictures and text. It's unlikely that Roemer made the photos. There is, in Roemer's correspondence, a letter from Weltrundschau dated 11.4.33 but it's content is not really revealing.
