The Stimson Avenue iistoric District is a small residential area,.’- anproximately two city blocks in size, located on the fashionable EastSide of Providence. It includes all the structures on the east side ofHope Street betweenAngell Street and Stimson Avenue, on both sides ofthe L-shapedStimson Avenue and its spur, Diman Place, and on the north.side of Angell Street from the southeasterntermination of Stimson -.
Avenue back, or west, to Hope Street. Twenty-nine housesand a churchwith annexesare included in this rougly-rectangular district. Stimson
* Avenue, its spine, was cut through in 1861 from the Angell.Street endand finished to- Hope Street by 1885 though its houses are numberedtoday inverse.to its development. It is protected on the north by the
- high stone walls which surround.the grounds of the former Dexter Asylum,* the Providennpoor-housebequeathedc. 1830. Stimson Avenue and DimanPlace together form a quiet, tree-shadedresidential "pocket" withinwhich are spacedmany fine examples of "Queen Anne’t and Colonial Revivalarchitecture. Certain of these-are singled out here for special mention:
No. 8 Stimson Avenue is the Thomas B. Potter house, built in 1897,-a good--if somewhat overhearing-exampleof the eclectic use of ColonialRevival detail in combination with a French-chateau-inspiredroof and aformal, solidly-horizontal main mass of yellow Roman brick. Many of its
* Colonial Revival features are executed and underscoredin copper facing:the arched dormers of the third story, the curving central bay of thesecond story; a fine modillioned-cornice.at eaves-level;the recessedentrance porch at the southwest with its five Ionicncolumns’ backed bypilaster responds against the body of the house; Its architect, EdwardI. Nickerson, was noted for hit use of traditional forms- in an inconven-tional manner, his emphasison ornamentationand the use of a variety ofmaterials; and this structure is a fine and typical. example of Nicker-sons taste and usage. -
*No. 19 Stimson Avenue, the JosephE. Fletcher house of 1890, was -
designed by Lhe Providence finn of Stone,-Carpenterand Willson and isprobably the architecural "gem’1 of the district. It displays an expert:ard imaginative handling of a great variety of materials; stone, redpressedbrick, wood, slate, metal, and ornamental insertions of stainedglass. Its setting, at one end of a flat lawn -and with overhanging -
gable-end to the street, suggeststhe asymmetrytypical of "Queen Anne"design; butthe main eastern front presents an elaborate hut perfectly-balanced façade centefldy abaliistraded porch-with hay windows aboveand, above them, picturesque dormers. A number of Colonial Revival details are used in pleasing Oontrast to the hays, peaked dormers, and tallchimneys so typical of the- "QueenAnnettstyle. *- The columns, ramped railsand turned halusters of the entrance porch -and the finely-executed corniceof a reeding-hand with modillions above are all drawn from colonial sou’rces
1: No. 33 Stlmson Avenue was built for William P. Goodwin andwhilenot an imposing structure, is typical of the majority of houses in thedistrict. It is a comfortabte but unpretentious one-family. housedisplaying the high angularity, the asymmetry of missing and oE placing

- STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
-
-- Stimson Avenue developed rapidly in the l8@0-’s and 1690’s as a - -
* . -- neighborhord of pleasant one-family dwellings whose generouspropor- tions and stylistic variations indicated the comfortable status of
*- their owners. These were men of conthuhity prominenceand of wealth* - -
* newly acquired through manufacturing and business. JosephFletcher,o - - who built no. 19 Stiinson Avenue, was vice-president of Providenceand- - - National Worsted Mills. Francis Carpenter of 276 Angell Street was1- - . president of the metals firm of Congdon & Carpenter, begun around 1790u
- - * by JosephCarpenter and still in operation today. John Jones Stimson, 2* - -
‘‘ for whom the- street was named, made the fortune with which he pur- -- - -chased the Dexter house in 1837 in the wine and groceries business.
* - - h’- After 1850, the residential development of Providence3,supoer - I -
-tn - - East Side moved north along Hope Street in a nrogression of arcbi- -

- progression. --- At its corners with HpecStreet, and facing each other.,-
- stand the Amos Reckwith house of l861--one of the last of the "Italian fW - villat’ style housesto be built on the East Side--and the Lyman KnappU - - house-of.-1382--oneof the first of the "Queen Anne" style houseswhich
were to spread across much of the upoer East Side in -subsquentdecades.-. - C
-- The Stimson -Avenue Histqric District included the work of such
architects as Alpheus C. Morse, Stone, Carnenter and Willson, Carrre- - and Hastings, and William Chamberlain. Fine, intact examples of
- .-*-- federal ard "Italian villa" styles as well as of "Queen Anne," Colonial- -

- bounds. Several of the "Queen Anne" houses feature elements from- : -: - - ** rather unexoectedsources. Amid the general display of high and ir

Innovations in hoñse-planningare visible - in marw of the homesin the district. - There is a new emphasis on such service conveniences
- as pantries, back staircases, dumb-waiters, and clothes-drying yards. There is also a concern with new heating and cooling systems. The
