With nearly 10,000 miles of freight rail tracks passing through the Delta region, our railways are important modes for Delta communities and businesses to participate in our national and global economy. Something as simple as a rail spur to a new location can help bring hundreds of jobs to a community, connecting the Delta to the global marketplace.

Investing in the Delta: Transportation Infrastructure

Connecting Delta Businesses and Communities to the World

2014 DRA Investments into Transportation Infrastructure

With more than 230,000 miles of roadways, 250 airports, 21 interstate highways, and 19 waterways, the Delta region’s transporta-tion infrastructure is a critical link to economic development, global and domestic commerce, and travel for the 10 million people living in the Delta and millions more people and businesses connected to the region. The Delta region is home to the world’s largest cargo airport and the most heavily-traveled trucking corridor in the country. Our greatest natural asset, the Mississippi River, is the heart of a river system that covers 75 percent of the country’s inland navigable waterways. Businesses rely on safe and efficient transportation infrastructure and having a modernized system can often be a major determinant for a business looking to invest and expand in a community. Without

effective, reliable multimodal transportation connecting the Delta region to the rest of the U.S. and countries around the world, our communities cannot be competitive in a global economy.

The Delta Regional Authority recognizes the need for effective, reliable multimodal transportation across the region to connect the Delta region to the rest of the world – supporting a thriving 21st century economy and recruiting business investment to our communities. Through the States’ Economic Development Assistance Program, DRA prioritizes investments in the construction, rehabilitation, and expansion of local roadways, highways, bridges, ports, railways, and airports to support greater efficiency and success for businesses big and small in our regional economy.
