High Speed rail transport as important aspect of High Speed rail transport as important aspect of national policy related to:national policy related to:
• Land usage
• Energy security
• Environmental issues
«Shaping the Railway of the 21st Century»
Impact of economic and population Impact of economic and population growthgrowth
• Asia’s population will be 5 billion, more than 50%
in China and India (Shanghai 27 million, Tokyo 29
million, Beijing 22 million habitants with 11 out of
23 mega cities being in Asia)
• With average car usage alone, China’s carbon
emissions will be more than 1 billion tons,
equivalent to annual emission from world wide
transport today!
In 2025
«Shaping the Railway of the 21st Century»
• China will need more than 13 million hectares of
land (mostly cropland) related to automobile
transport. Constituting more than 50% of 23
million hectares available for cropland
• Indian economic development will produce similar
data
• Impact on oil reserves is reflected by the fact that
21st century will be consuming 5 times that of 20th
century
«Shaping the Railway of the 21st Century»
• While fuel efficient cars/ alternative forms of
energy and high yield cropping are progressing it is
rail transport in particular high speed will play an
important role
• UIC along with CR & IR will work on specific
studies
• UIC will lead a study with UNEP + IEA + WFO to
highlight the challenges
