Finnish folk music camp set

Annual Scandinavian/Log Cabin Day set at IC MuseumCASPIAN—It’s al-most time to celebrate the longest day of the year or Midsummer as it is known in Scandi-navia. Here in Iron County, an enthusiastic group is working on plans for the 38th annual Scan-dinavian/Log Cabin Day celebration at the Iron County Museum. On Saturday, June 23, the plans include a “Living History” experience in and around the Beechwood log cabin in Museum Park. Margaret Scheffer will portray “Ing-aborg,” the lady who supposedly lives in the cabin. She will tell stories about life in a log cabin, share samples of her home-made rye bread that was baked in the old wood stove, hang out hand-washed

clothing and make sa-chets from her dried herbs. It is not only a local practice to celebrate Midsummer, it is also a state celebration. The fourth Sunday in June is designated by Michigan as “Log Cabin Day” in tribute to the Scandinavian early settlers who brought this style of building to the United States. The celebration will start at 10 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. Planning continues for additional events, which include old-time music played out-of-doors (weather permitting); special Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Finnish exhibits in the Cultural Center; a dance recital in the afternoon by a children’s group from Houghton; a museum tour, and great Scandi-navian refreshments. A reduction in the normal admission do-nation ($6 instead of $8) is possible, as the celebration of Scandi-navian Cultural Heri-tage is sponsored by MCACA, Finn Spark, Inc. and the Iron Coun-ty Iron County His-torical and Museum Society.

HANCOCK--Finland-ia University’s Finnish Council in America and its Finnish Ameri-can Heritage Center will host the second annual Finnish Folk Music Camp from July 17 to 19, on Finlan-dia’s campus here. For the musician, 2012 Music Camp classes include in-struction on guitar, mandolin, fi ddle, kan-tele, bones and spoons, harmonium, voice, and new this year, ac-cordion (button and keyed). Classes are designed to accom-modate beginners and advanced players, with everyone learning new techniques and tunes. For those that want to learn the Finnish kantele there are in-struments available for use. Evenings will include concerts and

dances by faculty and students that are also open to the public. Classes for the non-musician include workshops to make-your-own five-string or 10 string kantele or piccolo kantele, Finnish tango and folk dancing instruc-tion, hands-on Finnish food arts and weaving classes, lectures, story-telling and Finnish language classes, also new this year. Call 906-482-1413 or visit www.finlan-dia.edu/music-camp for information about Music Camp tuition, housing, and dining. At the website you can also get detailed descriptions about the classes, the instructors and the class schedule. An early registration discount is offered un-til June 15.

The play will be produced by local fi rst and second graders and it is hoped that all incoming kindergar-teners will be able to attend. “Are You Ready for Kindergarten?” will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11, with produc-tions at 10 a.m. at the Windsor Center Audi-torium in Iron River and at 1 p.m. at the Contemporary Center in Crystal Falls.

Parents are en-couraged to bring the entire family and sit back and enjoy a fun performance that will show real children’s thoughts and feelings about the fi rst day of school. The Great Start Col-laborative is Michi-gan’s nationally rec-ognized statewide initiative to foster school readiness and life success for young children. The Parent Coali-tion is committed to organizing free events for children and fami-lies, providing valu-able parent leadership opportunities and re-sources for parents, and helping our youth to become active and engaged in the com-munity. In addition, the Par-ent Coalition will: --provide a ‘great start’ to kindergarten

for all children --improve access to high quality early childhood programs --build support sys-tems for parents --distribute family resources - - recognize the needs of children and families in poverty --organize family events and activities --host monthly par-ent meetings and cafés support leadership --provide decision making and empower-ment for parents To l e a r n m o r e about the Great Start Collaborative, visit its website at www.greatstart4kids.org, or learn more specifi cs about the upcoming meetings and theater production, contact Ringel, at [email protected] or (734) 474-8597.
