Understanding Mental Disorders, Diagnosis, and the DSMIs Crucial! Mental health professionals are expected to understand and be proficient in diagnosing mental disorders. Moreover, diagnoses are required for insurance reimbursement and are used in communications with other professionals. However, because clinicians become specialized, they may not see a wide range of disorders and may not have the most current information. Knowledge of the major disorders is particularly important in relation to the new DSM-5, which represents significant changes in our framework for the diagnosis of mental disorders.
Highlighting current information regarding diagnostic categories and changes in the new DSM, this course is designed to train clinicians in the DSM-5, the prominent mental disorders (including adult and childhood disorders), differential diagnoses, and the key criteria required to diagnose. Participants, who work in non-diagnostic mental health-related areas, will gain an understanding of these mental disorders, which will assist them when reading client reports and creating treatment plans, educational plans, and more!
Course DirectorJEAN KEIM, PhD, ABPP, is a Licensed Psychologist with over 20 years of experience training mental health professionals in diagnostics and psychopathology. Dr. Keim has authored over 100 presentations and publications for mental health professionals on topics such as trauma, mental health emergencies, multicultural issues, and group counseling. Her book, Case Studies in Ethics, Diagnosis and Treatment: Images of Clients’ Lives, was a finalist for Book of the Year, Midwest Independent Publishers Association. In addition, Dr. Keim is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychologists (ABPP) and past president of the American Psychological Association’s Division 49.
She compiled the most up-to-date information on DSM-5 based on the latest research in the field. Dr. Keim’s teaching approach is enhanced by her extensive clinical experience helping clients with schizophrenia, anxiety, addiction, and PTSD, as well as eating, bipolar, depressive, and neurodevelopmental disorders. She has supervised countless masters and doctoral level clinicians seeking mental health licensure and taught psychological appraisal, theories of psychotherapy, career counseling, ethics, group psychotherapy, program evaluation, crisis intervention, human development, clinical techniques, and brief therapy. Dr. Keim encourages discussion during her seminar, employing informative and interactive examples. Her use of humor and interaction with attendees results in an enjoyable learning experience.
What You Will Learn•Discuss changes to the organization and categories of mental
disorders in the DSM-5
•Develop an understanding of differential diagnoses
• Identify the changes to multi-axial diagnosis
•Explore changes in the diagnosis of personality disorders
•Discuss ethical, professional, and legal issues that are involved in the diagnostic process
Dr. Keim was an enjoyable, insightful teacher. While interjecting some humor, she challenged me and
taught me the skills I needed.
